Barry Creyton began his career at the age of 17 in theatre and in radio in Australia and by age 20, was playing leads on stage, and in national radio productions. He also hosted his own weekly radio program devoted to theatre news and interviews. At 21, he made his Australian television debut as Lorenzo in a national television production of The Merchant of Venice. For three seasons, he starred in the TV series The Mavis Bramston Show. This ground breaking show, the highest rated in the history of Australian television, dealt with topical and political satire.Creyton relocated to England for twelve years playing comedy and dramatic roles in London's West End - including Don's Party (Royal Court), Roger's Last Stand (Duke of York's), Ten Years Hard (Mayfair), Urban Guerilla (Soho Poly), a revival of the musical Salad Days, and Liz, a musical based on Aristophanes' Lysistrata as well as several revues and the National Tour of Abelard and Heloise. On his return to Australia, Creyton starred in many theatre productions - Ayckbourn's Bedroom Farce, Season's Greetings and Absurd Person Singular, Frayn's Noises Off, and in Pack Of Lies, Side By Side By Sondheim, The Owl And The Pussycat, Suddenly At Home, The Philanthropist, and played twins in the comedy-thriller Corpse. He guest starred on many popular TV episodics. These roles were generally amorous cads or big-business villains - characters at odds with the comedies he played on the stage. They included The Restless Years, The Young Doctors, Skyways, Cop Shop, The Sullivans, I Married a Bachelor, Cuckoo in the Nest, as well as guest star roles in TV movies, Image of Death, All at Sea, the Michael Powell feature, They're a Weird Mob and the BBC's Robert Louis Stevenson in Australia. He turned to directing, with the musical Nunsense which broke box office records all over Australia, and employed two companies playing simultaneously. A motorcycle accident during the run of Corpse resulted in a badly broken leg. The long recuperation period enabled him to write a stage comedy, Double Act. Since 1990, Creyton has worked almost exclusively in the United States, principally as writer and director. He relocated from New York to Los Angeles when commissioned to write a movie of the week for Hearst Television, while his off Broadway revue Secrets Every Smart Traveler Should Know ran for two and a half years in New York. His critically acclaimed adaptation of Noël Coward's Peace in Our Time for the Antaeus Theatre Company in L.A. received the Ovation Award and the L.A. Weekly Annual Theatre Award; the L. A. Times voted the production among the best world theatre of the year.He has appeared on stage at the Antaeus Theatre in Balzac's Cousin Bette, Shaw's The Doctors Dilemma and Moliere's School For Wives and as Apollo in The Curse of Oedipus.Creyton returns to Australia periodically for theatre engagements, starring in Noël Coward's Blithe Spirit, directing and starring in his own plays, Later Than Spring and Valentine's Day (since produced in several languages and, along with his Double Act, in constant repertoire in Europe), and in 2007 he returned to Sydney's Ensemble Theatre to star in Peter Quilter's play Glorious, and again in 2010 in Quilter's Duets, in which he played four diverse characters. His young adult novels, The Dogs of Pompeii and Nero Goes to Rome, co-authored with American writer Vaughan Edwards, are published by Random House, and his novel Murder is Fatal, an affectionate parody of noir movies, was published in 2017.His novel The View from Olympus Mons, was published in 2022 by NineStar Press. The STAGES podcast is available to access and subscribe from Spotify and Apple podcasts. The “mildly talented” (100% his term, not ours) actor, Nick D'Agosto tweeted enthusiastically about The Life You Can Save, and when the team saw the tweet, they jumped on it! They reached out and connected Nick and Charlie, and a friendship was formed. Nick invited Charlie to appear on his (Nick's) podcast, “God & Other Delicacies,” and now Charlie is returning the favor. If Nick sounds familiar, it's because his voice graces the beginning and end of each of Charlie's episodes (and some movies and TV shows, as well). Born and raised in a middle- to upper-middle-class, largely white, neighborhood in Nebraska, Nick made the effort to have a broader world view, including studying poverty and race issues in the Dominican Republic for a semester when he was a student at Marquette University. As of this recording, Nick is back in grad school, pursuing an advanced degree in Divinity at Meadville Lombard Theological School, a Unitarian Universalist seminary. In this episode, Nick and Charlie talk about how ending poverty is a value they share, how ending poverty is a central tenet to Christianity and ethical atheism alike, what influences shape us as we go through life, and why it's so easy to fall short of our professed values. Nick is a member at Antaeus Theatre Company in Los Angeles, volunteers at his UU church in Pasadena, and supports the charity "The Life You Can Save." He lives in Los Angeles, CA with his wife and young son. You can find out more about Nick on IMDb: Nicholas D'Agosto - IMDb. Overview This has to be the greatest highlight of doing this podcast. I got to talk to Armin Shimerman - he of Quark fame from Star Trek DS9. This man is definitely a national treasure. He's a Shakespearean rhetoric scholar, teaches at USC and works with at risk youth. We discuss his book series which is an Edwardian historical novel that uses the characters from Shakespeare's Twelfth Night to weave a masterful tale. This man is so much beyond the characters we know him from and this interview is worth the listen for the knowledge he passes along. ------------------------------- On November 5, 2022, renown stage and television actor Armin Shimerman will release the final book of his historical trilogy, Illyria. Until then, readers are invited to enter the world he created – occupied by familiar and fantastic characters of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night – with a new bundle of the first two books in the series available through Jumpmaster Press. The series opens with Betrayal of Angels. Doctor John Dee is an Elizabethan mathematician, cryptographer, mystic, and The Queen's conjurer. He is commissioned by Her Majesty's spymaster, Sir Francis Walsingham, to uncover treason, reveal terrorists, and unveil threats to The Crown by a young Count who governs Illyria, an island in the English Channel. Dr. Dee is accosted by a teen playwright, William, who solicits the renowned scholar's mentorship, which results in an unlikely collaboration to sleuth out sedition on Illyria. The saga continues in book two, A Sea of Troubles. While John Dee investigates the loyalty of a Catholic nobleman on Illyria, he must overcome legal and reputational worries at home Meanwhile, his exiled young assistant William becomes more entangled with the people and the prejudices of the island, including an arranged marriage that is not to his liking. Who is to be believed and who is to be trusted in a time of shifting loyalties?“If you've ever wondered how a relatively unschooled William Shakespeare became the best writer of the English language, and if you've been intrigued by movies and books about the Elizabethan era, The Illyria Trilogy is my response to you. The era and its magic, its politics, its theater, its people, its superstitions, and its cruelty; swirl into that all the characters from Shakespeare's Twelfth Night including the actual man who was the prototype for Prospero in The Tempest. I know the time travel will inspire and entertain," said Armin. “... delightful book … Shimerman creates a charming …wonderful tale ...”Mike LoMonico Institute Director - Folger Shakespeare Library"What a treat to discover that such a remarkable actor would be an equally remarkable writer. “Betrayal of Angels,” … One hell of a story (and storyteller). I impatiently wait for the last two installments.”Rick Berman, Star Trek Executive Producer “Shimerman's fact-packed, historical adventure [is a] … must read … He had me at the first word …”Scott Carter Emmy-nominated TV producer About Armin A veteran of stage and screen, Armin is widely known for his portrayal of Quark on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Principal Snyder on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Other credits include notable appearances on TV shows from Hill Street Blues and The West Wing to CSI and dozens of others. His voice has been heard in many animated shows and popular game series such as Ratchet & Clank and BioShock. Armin is a renown stage actor, having performed on Broadway and stages across the country. Dennis is joined via Zoom by four of the creators behind the new audio drama 90069: West Hollywood - Brunch, Interrupted, which is one of a series of Zip Code plays produced by the L.A.-based Antaeus Theatre Company. The four guests are writer Sean Abley, actors Parnell Damone Marcano and Bill Brochtrup (who is also the company's Artistic Director) and sound designer Jeff Gardner. The quartet talk about the process of creating the project during COVID and the play's oh-so-current theme of gentrification of gay neighborhoods. Then the group joins Dennis for a rousing round of You Don't Know My Life! where they each submit answers to this question: What's something you've witnessed or experienced where you thought, 'Only in West Hollywood?' The answers range from the hilarious--a shirtless neighbor asking, "Do you have any poppers I could borrow?"--to the poignant--RIP, Silver Spoon and Yukon Mining Company diners. Kitty Swink (The Fosters, Crossing Jordan, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Patty Hearst, In The Mood) is a professional actor, and Co-Artistic Director of The Antaeus Theatre Company (where I am a member). Kitty opens a window for us into her nuclear family, and the extraordinary pairing that was her father and mothers' marriage. With deep affection, charm and lots of humor, Kitty tells about her mothers' final days, spent at home in the embrace of her loving family. What is captured in her telling is the poignant, sweet, authentic, hilarious, ludicrous, magical and mysterious nature of the final moments of a human life. Kitty opens up about the complexities of her fathers' last years too, as well as her own brushes with death, having now been a cancer survivor twice over. It is a sublime hour, spent in reverence for life, and in meditation on what gives it meaning. Kitty speaks about a healing art that she credits, alongside the work of her oncologists, with saving her life after cancer and bringing her back to full health: Jin Shin Jyutsu At one point, Kitty tells a heartwarming story about me and one of her dear friends and mentors who passed away in 2013: Joe Ruskin Kitty's Facebook: Kitty SwinkKitty's Twitter: @KitSwinkKitty's Instagram: @kittyswink Official Website: nicholasdagosto.comInstagram: @nicholasdagosto #GodsDelicateShowTwitter: @nicholasdagosto #GodsDelicateShow LinkedIn: Nicholas D'Agosto Music by Sean Whalen, Art by Alexandra Delano
John Apicella (The Call of the Wild, Seinfeld, Freaks and Geeks, Twin Peaks, Friends, The West Wing) is a professional actor, and a fellow (and founding) member of The Antaeus Theatre Company (which is how we met). John opens a window for us into his childhood and early adulthood from the vantage point of the man grown wiser from that lived experience. In turns sweet and sad, and always compellingly honest, John shares the regrets he has, and the remorse he feels, for some early mistakes he wishes he could take back. But what emerges from the painful process of taking responsibility for his past actions is an artist with an ethos oriented toward "Living in Truth", and a man whose spirituality is framed by love, connection, and community. John has a deep love for the transformative power of theatre, and here is a link to an article about one of his favorite playwrights and activists: The great Václav Havel At one point, John delights me by introducing me to an old profession which was still around when he was a kid in Chicago: The Ragpicker John's Facebook: John Apicella Official Website: nicholasdagosto.comInstagram: @nicholasdagosto #GodsDelicateShowTwitter: @nicholasdagosto #GodsDelicateShow LinkedIn: Nicholas D'Agosto Music by Sean Whalen, Art by Alexandra Delano

Special Edition: Talking Antaeus with Harry Groener Download Directly From iTunes Feedburner Link Harry Groener is a classically trained actor who has 83 credits on IMDB, has performed in Broadway classics like Crazy For You, Oklahoma, Cats and Spamalot and has been nominated for three Tony awards. That's not to mention the countless plays and musicals he has done around the country. He is also a founding member of the Anteaues Theater Company. You remember them right? We did a story about the Antaeus Theatre Company not too long ago. Groener would excuse you though if you didn't know him for his illustrious theater career or even his 68 episodes on the sitcom Dear John, which was a top ten show in its late eighties/early nineties hay day. No, he knows full well you probably know him for one of three things: Mayor Richard Wilkins II: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Tam Elbrun in Star Trek: The Next Generation's "Tin Man". Ted's eccentric step-dad Clint: How I Met Your Mother As you will hear in the interview Harry doesn't mind this one bit. He embraces it and he feels honored to have worked on shows that people remember so fondly. When I spoke with Mr. Groener the 64 year old actor was giving with him time and his passion for live theater shown through bright and clear. I hope you will give the interview a listen and head over to the Antaeus Kickstarter page and give whatever you can. They have 5 days left to raise money for their new home which will bring live theater to their community. Remember when we did a story about the Antaeus Theatre Company not too long ago? Well FYI, they have an AMAZING group of people who do great work over there. One of those people is Mike McShane who graciously joins us on this very special edition of the podcast to do trivia with Stephanie and Mr. Bob Reyer. Mike talks about Antaeus, what they’re doing and tells a TON of great stories (including tell Mel Brooks “NAH” on The Producers) and more. You don’t want to miss the amazing fast friendship between Mike and Bob. Stephanie promises that the trivia isn’t SUPER DUPER HARD this time (you know, totally objectively) so play along as Mike and Bob see how many questions they can get right.
