From playing football in his neighborhood in Pasadena as a kid to playing in multiple Super Bowls, he speaks about the joys of being a professional athlete as well as what it's like to deal with loss when you lose the biggest game of your life. As he says, “Struggle is life. It is the downs that make the ups so great. It is the losses that make the wins so satisfying.” Chad explains what makes a team great is not the most talent, but those that play for one another. She shared insight on sustainability trends and challenges right now and what's meaningful when it comes to event and venue certification. Find out why she thinks sustainability has (finally) shifted from obligation to opportunity in 2024. Our guest Lindsay Arell has been pioneering sustainability efforts for the live event industry for two decades for professional sports teams, venues and events of all kinds. She began her career in the industry in 2003 as event manager at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver. She also worked at Freeman before returning to the Colorado Convention Center as the country' s first Sustainability Manager for a convention center. Her first big event was the Democratic National Convention, in which the Denver mayor had the goal for the most “sustainable convention in history.”   After that success, she launched Honeycomb Strategies in  2009. Honeycomb Strategies is a consulting firm devoted to innovative and sustainable operation strategies for the hospitality, sports, and events industry. Going beyond the environment, the company approaches sustainability as an opportunity to engage and create community. Rather than a checklist, they work with partners to understand their goals, priorities, and impacts of today and for the future. The Daily Sun-Up

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 21, 2021 8:23

Good Morning, Colorado, you’re listening to the Daily Sun-Up. It’s Thursday January 21st, and even though there’s a lot of turmoil right now we’re feeling lucky to start the day with you. Today - The city’s encampments persist, with tensions boiling over in Capitol Hill. Denver has opened two camps, but they’re full, and some are refusing to live there. But before we begin, let’s go back in time with some Colorado history adapted from historian Derek R Everett’s book “Colorado Day by Day”: Today, we’re going back to January 21st, 1842, when Alfred Packer, also known as "The Colorado Cannibal" was born. Packer earned his infamy at 32 when he and five other men had attempted to travel through the San Juan Mountains, during the peak of winter.  Now, our feature story. About 10 feet from an encampment on Pearl Street in Denver, where about 25 people are living in tents, keeping warm with makeshift fire pits fueled by propane tanks inside blanket- and tarp-covered structures. 24 year old Chloe Lives in her street level condo. She feels too unsafe to use her last name in this story.  What began last fall as a small encampment with a few quiet people who are homeless has grown exponentially since mid-December. The block is strewn with clothing and spoiled food, and there are syringes and foil with the remnants of heroin or meth.  Colorado Sun reporter Jennifer Brown paid Chloe a visit. And she’s joining us today to tell us more about the current situation. Jennifer, to start, how did you feel about the homelessness crisis after your visit with Chloe? Here’s some of Jennifer’s interview with Chloe  The city has now set up new safe outdoor spaces, where red and gray tents are lined up in tidy rows, there are toilets and showers, and staff is on site 24 hours a day.  Jennifer, can you tell us, besides these safe outdoor spaces, what programs is the city working on to solve this crisis? Jennifer also spoke with 34 year old Marcio Johnson, who described living in the encampment and trying to keep it clean.  The city has pushed the campers out of the alley a couple of times, and the encampments briefly dispersed to other parts of Capitol Hill only to return within days. More campers moved in after Denver cleaned up the large encampments by the Capitol and Morey Middle School. It seems like no one is winning.  And Chloe says it’s not their fault. It’s not our fault either, though. She blames the city at this point for lack of response, and a lack of action.  Thanks for listening. Before we go, here are a few stories that you should know about today: Emergency management crews have started to decommission the overflow coronavirus hospital set up at the Colorado Convention Center. None of the beds have been used, and the site was considered a last resort to the other four overflow sites. The work will finish by late March. Mesa County business leaders are urging newly inaugurated President Joe Biden to keep the Bureau of Land Management headquarters in Grand Junction. The office’s move from D.C. in 2019 was seen as a political play, but locals say it’s important to keep officials close to the lands they’re regulating. Colorado’s Air Quality Control Commission will consider new regulations next month to reduce emissions from natural gas well regulators. Pneumatic controllers, as they’re called, manage well conditions and release a little bit of natural gas every time they toggle a valve. The proposal would require no-bleed controllers. Good Morning, Colorado, and welcome to the Daily Sun-Up. It’s Monday December 14th, and we’re feeling lucky to start the day with you. Join us daily for an in-depth look at one of our top stories. Today, we’re discussing how state officials are looking to extend leases for alternate care sites. While at the same time, Hospitals are activating “surge plans” to increase their capacity. Before we begin, let’s go back in time with some Colorado history adapted from historian Derek R Everett’s book “Colorado Day by Day”: Today, we take you back to December 14th, 1948 when Commissioners from both Colorado and Kansas signed the Arkansas River Compact. Prior, the line between Colorado and Kansas had inspired generations of tension and court battles.  And now, our feature story.  Colorado’s three remaining hospital overflow sites were originally set to close in January. But now, state officials are working to extend leases and line up staff. They’re still worried about the worst-case scenario they planned for nine months ago. Two of the original five alternate care sites were dismantled back in October. And in the remaining three - the Colorado Convention Center and two other sites - The hospital beds have been empty for months.  Still, the Colorado Office of Emergency Management is working on a contract extension. It’s a sign that even as the first doses of the coronavirus vaccine are on their way to Colorado, public health officials remain concerned that the crisis could get worse through the holiday season and the rest of winter. Colorado Sun reporter Jennifer Brown is joining us today to talk more about the situation. Jennifer, can you start by giving us some more background on these overflow hospitals? When were they built? So, now that those two sites have closed can you talk more about the plans for the remaining three? And how much is this costing the state? Thanks, Jennifer.  The state’s unified command center now gets hospital capacity reports daily — sometimes more — so officials can make a fast decision if they need to launch operations at one of these alternate care sites. It would take about 14 days to get one ready to accept patients. And across the state have been closer to reaching capacity. Closer in the last few weeks than any time so far in the pandemic.  A few reached near 90% of capacity in late November and early December. One — Park View Medical Center in Pueblo — was so full that it reached out for help. The distress call resulted in 20 patients leaving Park View for other hospitals with vacant beds.  A hospital collaborative was also activated last month. This allows hospitals to transfer patients to medical centers not only within the same hospital system but to other systems, too. This network is part of the state’s effort to avoid opening the alternate care sites. And thank you all for listening. Finally, here are a few stories you should know about today: This was an extra bad week for Coloradans who lost their jobs at the start of the pandemic. We just ended week 39 — the maximum number of weeks one is eligible for unemployment pay currently.  The U.S. gave the final go-ahead Friday to the nation’s first COVID-19 vaccine, doses could arrive in Colorado in days. The Legislative Audit Committee, which is led by Republicans, will hold a hearing Tuesday to investigate alleged election discrepancies in Colorado. There’s no proof there were any. Colorado’s review of the Catholic Church sex abuse named priests, but not those who covered up their crimes. Victims say the whole story hasn’t been told. For more information on all of these stories, visit our website, www.coloradosun.com. Now, a quick message from our editor. Good Beer Hunting

It’s hard to be objective when it comes to such a subjective thing like beer. We’re all driven by our own preferences and tastes mapped out by sensory experiences of flavor and aroma. Things are good and bad, sought after whales and shelf turds. Beer is an experiential good and our exposure varies on time of day, mood, company and more. But there are still plenty of cold, hard facts that factor into the social, cultural and business side of beer, which is why this week’s guest is a special one for me.  Bart Watson deals with numbers. Truthful, verifiable, factual data. As one of only several economists who work within the beer industry, it’s his job to offer context and insight into what’s changing, and often, what’s to come. His logical and well-cited reason is regularly seen on the Brewers Association website and increasingly in media around the country. When some may be focusing on the hot take du jour, Bart can be found writing a blog post or interacting on Twitter with calculated answers. And it’s about beer. As the BA was preparing to kickoff the Great American Beer Festival in early October, I sat down with Bart inside the Colorado Convention Center to geek out, talking about the new challenges within the beer market, including price points, marijuana use, distribution and more. With thousands of people scurrying around the building ready to celebrate craft beer, it was exciting to take a fittingly calm moment to evaluate the state of the industry and where beer lovers should be looking in 2018. Who knew economics could be so cool?

Brandon, Dan, and Howard are joined by Phil and Kaja Foglio, and we discuss writing for webcomics... no, wait... writing for "sequential picture-assisted storytelling." Phil and Kaja are the creators of Girl Genius, the web's foremost hunk' o' steampunk -- and we here at Writing Excuses are big fans. During our short time together they help us understand the nuances of creating Girl Genius pages, writing to the outline of the story, and crafting their dialog. The Foglios (and Howard) have a little bit of advice for folks looking to start their own webcomic, too. (Mmmmm.... Grizzly Bear Soup!)
