That mission is to advance and educate the plumbing and HVACR industry for society's health, safety, and comfort and to protect the environment.​Tradesmen that elect to join their local PHCC commit to the collective values of trust, integrity, and service that our chapter has become known for. When you see a technician with a PHCC patch, you know you are working with skilled tradesmen you can trust.1892The San Diego chapter of the PHCC was founded only 9 years later, in 1892, and, like its other chapters across the country, continues to advance the legacy initiatives of its founders. All PHCC chapters seek to provide training resources for plumbing and HVACR to their local members, and the San Diego chapter is honored to be one of the few chapters that can offer both.2013The PHCC of San Diego saw the opportunity in 2013 to provide their local P-H-C tradesmen with a platform for continued education and growth through a Journey-Level plumbing apprentice program. So the PHCC of San Diego Academy was formed. This 501(c)3 trade school is federally accredited by the Department of Labor Bureau of Apprenticeship Training and utilizes the NCCER curriculum. The HVAC-R Certification program is nine months long and follows a combination curriculum built by educators and HVAC technicians in the field.2023Today, the Academy stands strong and steadfast with terrific staff, an improved curriculum, and a growing number of hands-on labs. The PHCC of San Diego Academy continues to add programs based on the needs of the industry, like the Back-flow Certification. Efforts also extend beyond the classroom, with an increased focus on community outreach specifically to San Diego County Agencies, high schools, and the military. Our office can also act as a recruiter for individuals seeking employment in the P-H-C industry. We do our best to match individuals to members based on their location, experience and initiative.

Manufacturing jobs like industrial engineering and mechanical engineering technicians are projected to increase between 15% and nearly 30% by 2026, fetching an annual salary of around $65,000, according to the Connecticut Department of Labor. These jobs don't require a traditional four-year college degree. And there are opportunities for students to go to trade school while they're finishing high school. The drumbeat from employers and local leaders has been how to attract and train new workers to support a key sector in the state economy. There's money pouring in to enable this. This year, Connecticut was one of only five states to receive a U.S. Department of Labor $10 million State Apprenticeship grant. The Connecticut Manufacturing Innovation Fund Advisory Board recently approved $8.3 million to support new and established programs in Connecticut's manufacturing sector, including an advertising campaign to highlight career opportunities in manufacturing. And, the Connecticut Small Business Development Center, hosted at the UConn School of Business, received one of four federal grants, to operate a national Advanced Manufacturing Center. The $2 million grant will give assistance to minority-owned businesses to help them expand. This hour on Where We Live, we hear from a high-school student who's earning college credits in manufacturing, a young woman who's working on the shop floor, a manufacturer, academia, and the state. And, we find out more about what's being done to attract more women to the industry, including minority owned businesses.
