On October 16, 1968, Tommie Smith and John Carlos lifted their fists to give the Black Power salute during the national anthem at the medal ceremony in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. Smith and Carlos won gold and bronze medals, respectively, in the 200-meter dash. The International Olympic Committee president deemed the act to be a domestic political statement that was inappropriate for the apolitical Olympic Games. As a result, the two were suspended from the American team, banned from the Olympic Village, and expelled from the Games. Smith continued in athletics and played in the NFL before becoming a professor. Carlos also played in the NFL and later became a high school track and field coach. In 2008, Smith and Carlos received the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at ESPYs for their action at the Olympics. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

When former national champion college basketball coach and ESPN analyst Jim Valvano accepted the Arthur Ashe Courage Award for his battle with cancer at the first ESPY Awards, no one was sure if he would have the strength to even take the stage. What followed was a rousing 11-minute long call to action that spurred a new chapter in the fight against cancer. Michael O'Connor, director of the SC Featured special, The Speech, shares the details of Jimmy V's life that became encapsulated in one incredible moment of determination as his health failed, to deliver his message to the world and launch a foundation that continues working to achieve his final dream — finding a cure for cancer. To date, ESPN has helped the V Foundation raise more than $195 million for game-changing cancer research, accounting for more than half of the $310 million the V has granted to date. ESPN will host the ESPY Awards on July 12th...and will once again be honoring select athletes with the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. Most normal people thought former NFL running back Peyton Hillis...would receive the award this year. Instead...ESPN went with a completely different direction. We react to ESPN honoring Megan Rapinoe and the USWNT with the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. We explain why Peyton Hillis should've been honored over Megan Rapinoe & the USWNT. We also dispute ESPN reasoning for awarding Megan Rapinoe. USE PROMO CODE BTLFANS30 TO SAVE 30% OFF YOUR FIRST ORDER WITH ALL STROKES MATTER: https://www.allstrokesmatter.com/discount/BTLFANS30
Today's episode is about getting into bigger rooms with bigger people than you. Rooms where you're not the teacher, but the student. This is the ticket to exponential growth towards becoming extraordinary in whatever aspect of life you're focused on improving. I tell a story from my life where I put myself in a room with Pat Summitt: Olympic Gold and Silver medalist, Naismith Basketball Coach of the Century, 11th in Sports News list of 50 Greatest Coaches of all Time and the only woman on that list. Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama, received the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPYs and inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame. I put myself in this room to grow myself mentally and physically beyond what I knew was possible staying in my own comfortable bubble. In this room Pat Summitt pushed me beyond my limits along with 500+ other girls. I was exposed to a hunger in other human beings to excel that I never knew existed and I share something that happened at the end of the training camp something Pat Summitt gave me that changed my life forever.

Her statement went global within hours.Trinea was 37 years old when she first confronted the realization that she too was one of hundreds of victims of childhood sexual abuse at the hands of her perpetrator Larry Nassar. It has been recognized that Trinea is one the earliest victims enduring an estimated 800 “treatments” beginning at 6 years old.Since the trial, Trinea has joined forces with the Avalon Healing Center in Michigan, as the Director of Development, where she focuses on bringing national awareness to the comprehensive services available to victims of sexual assault and abuse.http://avalonhealing.orgTrinea features in the HBO documentary At The Heart of Gold: Inside The USA Gymnastics Scandal, in 2022 is a guest on the Dr. Phil Show and Trinea was honored in 2018 at the ESPYS- one of hundreds of brave survivors-receiving the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. What happens next for Trinea when she is left to cope with her truth as a survivor of childhood sexual abuse? This is an exceptionally raw and emotional conversation in which Trinea shares the very human side of her trauma from childhood sexual abuse. She confronts her truths when coping with the immense emotions of guilt and shame and talks about Finding Time to Heal in the throes of family life, pregnancy, motherhood and career.
