This week the fellas talk about an article Sarcastro found on Auto Brewery Syndrome in where your body produces alcohol making you appear intoxicated. Fatty shares some knowledge that Jim Koch of Samuel Adams/Boston Beer Company fame allegedly consumes dry yeast in order to prevent getting drunk. Corporal shares a Reddit link of some idiot trying to give themselves Auto Brewery Syndrom and big shock it doesn't go according to plan. For poor choices made this week, Sarcastro's procrastination to change the brakes on Queen Sarcastro's car lead to him having to work on it during the hottest week of the summer. Fatty gets sloppy with his knife skills right before his cruise. Banky spends too much money on disappointing hot dogs on National Hot Dog Day. Imagine being drunk, without having drunk a single drop of alcohol, it seems completely implausible, and yet for some is a reality. South-West media shared the story of a motorist who appeared in court in Bruges in 2022 after being found to have too much alcohol in his blood twice in the same year. The man, in his forties, was eventually acquitted, proving that the tests were not the result of a night of drinking, but rather of auto-brewery syndrome. Self-brewing syndrome, also known as intestinal fermentation syndrome, is when your body turns into a mini-brewery. Professor Alvarez, co-author of an analysis published on the subject in December 2020. says it's when carbs ferment into ethanol right inside your gut, thanks to yeast. Normally, our gut yeast can't brew enough booze to affect us. But for those with auto-brewery syndrome, it's a different story. They've got an overabundance of yeast, and when too much sugar is consumed, it ferments into alcohol, leading to drunkenness. What is it? And what are the consequences? Can it be treated? Is it possible to be drunk without drinking alcohol? Actually, yes. There is a condition called auto-brewery syndrome whereby an imbalance in your gut microbiome can ferment carbohydrates to create alcohol. Blood alcohol levels can get surprisingly high. Though this condition is thought to be rare, it might just be underdiagnosed. Patients are dealing with legal ramifications, social stigmas, and disbelief by friends, family, and physicians. Today we introduce the topic of auto-brewery syndrome to raise awareness that your gut microbiome can produce alcohol. We discuss how it occurs, how to diagnose it, and some strategies to treat it. Imagine that it's afternoon, and you are pulled over by a police officer because a tail light is out, which you didn't realize. He is pleasant when he comes to the door and you think you're going to be given a warning. Then he stops and frowns. He asks you to get out of the car and has you perform a field sobriety test. You submit to a breathalyzer and find yourself in the back of the police car being arrested for a DWI because of an elevated blood alcohol concentration. The problem is, you haven't had any alcohol to drink today. Or yesterday for that matter. Brooke is asking for help to save her sister, Alyssa’s life. When Alyssa was 15, she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder called polyglandular autoimmune disorder type one. This autoimmune disorder contains multiple things such as Addison’s disease, ovarian failure, hypoparathyroidism, and hypothyroidism. When Alyssa was first diagnosed she almost lost her life... We thought it was her nerve and she had multiple root canals. When Alyssa was finally diagnosed with her autoimmune disorder, her calcium was so low the doctor came in looking for a dead body... after she was diagnosed, Alyssa went through so many different trials such as almost losing her life multiple times due to trying to figure out her medication, stress, and a doctor overdosing her on medication trying to help her. Ever since then, Alyssa has battled with keeping her body healthy ever since that day. Everything was going good until Alyssa started showing signs of being intoxicated but she wasn’t drinking. As time went on, Alyssa’s symptoms became stronger. To the point that Alyssa was sleeping all the time. When she would wake, she would be inebriated. it got to the point in Alyssa’s health where we didn’t know what was going on. We didn’t know if she was going to wake up in the morning when she would go to sleep. There were multiple times when I have come into Alyssa’s room to find her lips blue and her face pale. I remember going over to her side and having to rub her chest to make sure she was alive.Last year, Alyssa was diagnosed with auto-brewery syndrome. Alyssa’s doctors have attempted to treat it with multiple different medications, but have yet to have much luck. Alyssa’s doctors are now recommending more aggressive medications to help her. Alyssa is most likely going to have to travel to the Mayo Clinic, or to another doctor in New York to get this treatment.
