The Dark Knight Returns (alternatively titled Batman: The Dark Knight Returns) is a 1986 four-issue comic book miniseries starring Batman, written by Frank Miller, illustrated by Miller and Klaus Janson, with color by Lynn Varley, and published by DC Comics. It tells an alternative story of Bruce Wayne, who at 55 years old returns from retirement to fight crime while facing opposition from the Gotham City police force and the United States government. The story also features the return of classic foes Two-Face and the Joker, and culminates with a confrontation with Superman, who is now a pawn of the government. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/rangerryan/message

https://amzn.to/3KY6r51 In this sequel to Frank Miller's seminal graphic novel Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, it's three years later and the DC Universe is at peace. At least on the surface. And Batman must return once again to save the world from themselves. Still, the world looks fine: a perfectly choreographed, pretty little world where everything that's ugly, or even potentially disturbing, is all nicely wrapped up with neat little ribbons and swept under the carpet. Only Batman knows better. He's watched it fester to near-breaking point, and it's time for the only free man left who can effect any real change to bring it all down around their ears once and for all. The Dark Knight returns once again with a vitality unseen since the first years of his war on crime. Together with his army of Bat-soldiers, including Carrie Kelley—formerly Robin, and now the new Catgirl—the Dark Knight wages a new war on a diseased world that's become completely lost. Batman: The Dark Knight Strikes Again features appearances by such DC icons as Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter, the Atom, the Question and more. But are they still the World's Greatest Heroes or part of the conspiracy? This incredible volume, designed by multiple award-winner Chipp Kidd, features a new introduction by Miller commenting on returning to the world he created fifteen years ago. The book includes the complete 3-part story, plus numerous sketches and other never-before-seen material. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Writers and artists: we're always talking about them. But even though they're the primary movers in the creation of a comic book, they're not everything. Particularly overlooked is the design of the books, especially in physical form. Today's guest, Richard Bruning, knows all about design and how much it contributes to the comic book medium. After serving as editor-in-chief and art director for Capital Comics (overseeing Nexus, Badger, Whisper, and others), he moved to NYC to become design director at DC. Among other accomplishments, Richard contributed to the design of Watchmen and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, and oversaw the branding for Vertigo and DC's first line of graphic novels and collected editions. After a period working on commercial design projects, he returned to DC as a vice president and creative director, where he helped create the DC Spring logo in 2005. Now, he works with his wife (former Vertigo executive editor Karen Berger) on Berger Books, an imprint of Dark Horse Comics.Follow Rich on Twitter: @bruning_rich. _________________________________________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you liked this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. Part one of a two-part series with filmmaker and DC expert Alex Gray. In this episode, we discuss Alex Gray's early career working on the DVD box set of The Matrix and how that led to his stint as an executive at Warner Home Video. Alex also recounts the impact of reading Frank Miller's graphic novel “Batman: The Dark Knight Returns” and how that propelled him into a lifelong passion for Batman. We then delve into the origins of his fantastic documentary “Masterpiece: Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns.”
Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli rewind the clock with this epic retelling of the Dark Knight's origin! After redefining Batman with his groundbreaking “Batman: The Dark Knight Returns” (which we covered in a two-part episode), Frank Miller was tasked with introducing new readers to Batman. Miller re-teams with David Mazzucchelli, his collaborator on “Daredevil: Born Again” (another book we covered on this podcast) and Mazzucchelli's moody, luscious inks are a perfect match for Miller's noir-ish story. They are joined by Mazzucchelli's wife, Richmond Lewis, as the colourist and Todd Klein as the letterer. This is one of our favourite Batman stories and one of our favourite graphic novels of all time. This book has been a huge influence on the character and comics as a medium, inspiring other creators to take a more thoughtful, serious approach to their own stories. Influences can also be seen in almost every film adaptation of Batman from Christopher Nolan's “Dark Knight” trilogy to “Batman: Mask of the Phantasm.” We will be back in two weeks for another wonderful collaboration: Daredevil: Yellow by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale. In the meantime, you can follow us @mattandcalereadcomics on Instagram and Facebook or @mattandcaleread on Twitter.
Jeepers! We're back with part TWO of our deep dive into Bongo Comics' "Radioactive Man" series. In the 1990s, at the height of "The Simpsons'" popularity, Bongo Comics decided to bring Bart Simpson's favourite superhero, Radioactive Man, to life! The series was written by Steve Vance (who also did layouts), with finished art by Bill Morrison and co-plotting/colours by Cindy Vance. Each issue jumps around in the fictional history of Radioactive Man and in this episode we examine the last four issues: #216 (from 1972), #412 (from 1980), #679 (from 1986) and #1,000 (from 1995). Each issue is PACKED with homages to/parodies of superhero comics, background jokes and references to "The Simpsons." There's so much thought and care put into each and every panel. This is one of Matt's all-time favourite series, but at the start of our first episode, Cale wasn't as excited about the book. Will Matt's enthusiasm lead to more appreciation from Cale? You'll have to listen to find out! We will be back in two weeks for "Batman: Year One" by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli. A re-telling of Batman's origin, this graphic novel is set in the same universe as Miller's "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns" (make sure you listen to our 10th episode) and re-teams him with his "Daredevil: Born Again" collaborator (so make sure you listen to our 8th episode as well)! We've been posting a ton of images on social media, celebrating all of the classic comics that have influenced "Radioactive Man." In the SECOND half of our first-ever two-part episode, our two comic aficionados dive deep into Frank Miller's "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns." In the first part of the episode, we hear listeners discuss the legacy of the graphic novel, but now Matt and Cale take a closer look at Miller's writing, art and characterization. We examine Batman's post-retirement choices, and his relationships with Robin, Superman and the Joker. Follow us online @mattandcalereadcomics on Instagram and Facebook or @mattandcaleread on Twitter.
In our first-ever two-part episode, our two comic aficionados read Frank Miller's groundbreaking "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns." Originally published in 1986, "The Dark Knight Returns' is often credited alongside Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' "Watchmen" (see our first episode) with redefining and reinvigorating superheroes and the comics medium as a whole. Miller delves into the psyche of Batman/Bruce Wayne while pushing the craft of comics to new heights. After ten years of retirement, and older, grittier Bruce Wayne returns as Batman to face threats old and new in Gotham City. Commissioner Gordon faces retirement. The Joker has long been comatose. The teenage Mutant gang terrorizes the city and Superman is a government lackey. But Batman (and his new female Robin) will not rest until the streets of Gotham are free of crime. To help make sense of the book's impact, we asked listeners to send in voice notes sharing their connections and observations. In this half of Episode 10, we listen to these voice notes and comment. Next week, Matt and Cale return to dive deep into Frank Miller's writing and drawing choices. Follow us online @mattandcalereadcomics on Instagram and Facebook or @mattandcaleread on Twitter.
In an alternate reality mini series written and drawn by Frank Miller, published in 1986, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns told the tale of an aging Bruce Wayne's return to the mantle of the Caped Crusader to save darkness that had befell Gotham City. The series also changed Batman's image forever, as well as ushering in the fourth age of comics history, known as the Dark Age. Fans either love or hate this series, but it's success cannot be disputed as many of its story elements have made it to the big screen version of the Dark Knight.
Episode #2 of the Dime Comic Bros Podcast! Main topic - Batman: The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller. Just three guys around a microphone talking about geek culture: comics, movies, and television.
