In May, The New Pornographers' sophomore album ‘Electric Version' (2003) celebrated its 20th anniversary. A limited blue vinyl reissue hits stands today and we've also dedicated this latest episode of our Matador Revisionist History podcast to the record, with the band's A.C. Newman joining longtime Matador publicist Nils Bernstein for a stroll down memory lane with our host, Matt Sweeney. They discuss how ‘Electric Version' defied the un-follow-up-able-ness of ‘Mass Romantic,' how LA neo-hippies Beachwood Sparks inspired the record's title, and supply a complete track-by-track walkthrough. “As much as it's this hard-driving record with these exciting songs that have a lot of information, there's still a lot of ups and downs and emotional twists and turns,” recalls Bernstein. “It's just hook after hook after hook.” The era-appropriate rarity “Turn” – originally a Japan-only bonus track – is now available on streaming services. Newly pristine remasters of the “All For Swinging You Around” and “The Laws Have Changed” music videos are also now on YouTube.

Sleepyhead recorded their forthcoming sixth album, New Alchemy, at the legendary Boston area recording studio Q Division with esteemed producer and Q Division co-founder Jon Lupfer at the helm. They are releasing the album August 19 as a digital download and via streaming platforms to be followed by a release on 12” vinyl LP. They plan to play as many shows as they can manage after that! New Alchemy features Sleepyhead founders, drummer/vocalist Rachael McNally and guitarist/vocalist Chris O'Rourke as well as bassist/vocalist/keyboardist Derek van Beever, who joined the trio in 2004, a few years after the other two had moved to Boston. Many of the songs conjure the subtly infectious laissez-faire sounds of pre-Grunge Indie Rock the embrace early on in their career with a handful evoking classic Laurel Canyon Country-Rock and other 70's FM staples. The title track to New Alchemy was inspired by the exploits of the New Alchemy Institute, a utopian endeavor founded by idealistic scientists in the 1970's in Falmouth, Massachusetts, the hometown of Sleepyhead guitarist/vocalist Chris O'Rourke. Sleepyhead was formed in a basement room at NYU's Brittany dorm in the fall of 1989 by drummer/vocalist Rachael McNally, bassist Mike Galinsky and guitarist/vocalist Chris O'Rourke. They released their first 7" single, the Kramer-produced "Play," in 1991 on Picture Book Artifact. Four full-length albums followed, on three different independent record labels. Punk Rock City USA was released by Slumberland Records in 1993, followed by Starduster (Homestead 1994), Communist Love Songs (Homestead 1996), and The Brighter Shore (Sealed Fate 1999). They toured the United States and Europe throughout the nineties, sharing the stage with such legendary bands as Polvo, Half Japanese, Yo La Tengo, The Grifters, The Dambuilders, Nation of Ulysses, Helium, Royal Trux, Antietam, Luna, Versus, The Magnetic Fields, and Dungbeetle. Around the time their fourth album was released in 1999, Rachael and Chris got married, and Mike Galinsky moved on to a successful career in filmmaking. Dan Cuddy (The Special Pillow, ex-Hypnolovewheel) joined Chris and Rachael on bass. With Dan on bass, Sleepyhead did some touring for The Brighter Shore and began writing new songs. Rachael and Chris moved from New York to Boston in 2002 after having their first child. They had another kid in 2005. By this time, they had begun recording a new album, with Dan on bass, with producer Mike Deming (Pernice Brothers, Apples in Stereo, Beachwood Sparks, Lilys), at Deming's famed Studio 45 in Hartford, and subsequently Enfield, CT. In 2004, bassist/vocalist/keyboardist Derek van Beever joined the band, and they started playing shows in Boston, Providence, and New York whenever they got the chance. In April 2013, this new lineup of Sleepyhead went into Q Division Studios in Somerville, MA to record the last three songs for their long-time-coming fifth album, Wild Sometimes, which was released on renowned Chicago indie Carrot Top Records on April 8, 2014. They played a bunch of shows in the Northeast, Midwest and Southeast to celebrate the release of Wild Sometimes in 2014, and then started writing a whole bunch of new songs with Derek. In the Spring of 2018, Drawing Room Records released a well-received deluxe double vinyl LP/digital reissue of Starduster and Communist Love Songs called Future Exhibit Goes Here. An great interview with Gary Waldman, an artist manager-tour producer-musical instrument enthusiast, who spent decades with Neal Casal throughout his career. We discuss Neal Casal's music, his foundation, and his legacy. We discuss mental health in the music business and the songs of the great Neal Casal. To learn more about the Neal Casal Music Foundation visit:https://nealcasalmusicfoundation.org/To Purchase Highway Butterfly, The Songs of Neal Casal:https://nealcasalmusicfoundation.org/store/highway-butterflyAbout Neal Casal:Neal Casal was born in Denville, New Jersey in 1968. He was a songwriter, singer, guitarist, record producer, photographer, surfer and friend. When his parents divorced in the mid-70's, Neal moved with his mom from NJ to Georgia to California, before coming back to NJ and growing up in Rockaway, NJ. After graduating high school in 1987 and the end of his high school rock band, Exire, Neal started working at a guitar store called The Music Maker in Hackettstown, NJ. It was there he met a musician named Davis Jaynes, who would become Neal's mentor and a huge influence on his guitar style. They would play guitar together at the store all day and spent a year or so playing shows together around New Jersey, where Neal would develop the sound that would become the foundation of his solo career. Neal would go on to appear on multiple recordings as a member of bands like Circles Around the Sun, Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Beachwood Sparks, The Skiffle Players and Hard Working Americans. He added his sublime musical touch to studio sessions and live performances by a long list of artists, including Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Sheryl Crow, Lucinda Williams, The Jayhawks, James Iha and Vetiver. His vast body of solo work was embraced by audiences worldwide and continues to be rediscovered in his passing. With the formation of the Neal Casal Music Foundation, the body of work Casal left behind, including an extensive archive of unreleased material, will be reimagined to further shine a light on his artistry, while providing resources to raise money for positive change. Neal Casal brought joy to so many and, in his absence, the foundation created in his name will further that purpose. It also hopes to reflect back to Casal the beauty he brought to this world in pursuit of a life dedicated to music and art.Neal Graeme CasalNovember 2, 1968 – August 26, 2019

Further was originally a Quartet and then for awhile it was just the three of us. Towards the end we started moving away from low-fi records, trying to make our sound a little bit better. There was a time we didn’t even have a bass player, it was just three guitars and drums. We knew we needed a keyboard player and bass player. I saw this kid at the radio station one day, he was kind of like a punk rock/emu kid. I said, “can you play any instruments?” He said, “I can play guitar.” I said, “do you think you can play bass?” He said, “I can try.” I said, “do you want to come to practice Thursday?” That guy was Chris Gunst. I left Further to do a project with Sony and eventually after Further dissolved, they started a new band called Beachwood Sparks. That’s when Farmer Dave came in. There was a radio show that a couple of the guys from Beachwood Sparks had on KXLU, the local indie station out here (SoCal), they actually got in trouble, and almost got kicked off the air, because in the middle of the punk rock/indie rock, they would play David Crosby and Gram Parsons, and that was a big no-no. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

We’ve already established that are so many roads to Dead fandom. But with decades’ worth of music and lore to sift through, cultivating a deeper appreciation can be a challenge. This episode looks at the tools we use to dig the Dead, and how context is key to finding your seat on the bus. Ed and Casey examine the band’s online presence from the days of dial-up to our current era of 24/7 access, along with the digital platforms that make it easier to get your Dead on. Here’s a heavy trip: at some point in the not-too-distant future, the people who made this music—and everyone who saw the original band live—will be dust and bones. Is access a valid surrogate for experience? Will Dead culture perpetuate when the legacy is archive-only? Later, Casey gets down with Neal Casal, guitarist for the Chris Robinson Brotherhood and Circles Around the Sun. A thoughtful and engaging player and thinker, Neal has also collaborated with Cass McCombs’ Skiffle Players, Beachwood Sparks, Phil Lesh, and Bob Weir. He shares tips on where to dive in and offers a heartfelt account of his own Dead devotion. The Skiffle Players are some what of a hodge podge of terrific California players including singer-songwriter, Cass McCombs, Neal Casal of Chris Robinson Brotherhood and Circles Aaround the Sun, Dan Horne also of Circles Around the Sun and Grateful Shred, Aaron Sperske of Beachwood Sparks along with the incomparable and outstanding Farmer Dave of Beachwood Sparks. Together they play a sort of Skiffle music that blends jazz, blues, folk and American folk all together. Its an extraordinary sound, and SKIFF their second full length album is a tremendous delight. Fortunately, we were able to catch up with Farmer Dave, the skiffle music historian of the group, and the glue that holds the enterprise together. We dig these guys a lot, and SKIFF is a hoot. For more on the Skiffle Players visit skiffleplayers.com or check them out on Facebook.
