Disney World/Travel News May 2023   We just wrapped up the month of May, which means it's time to take a look back at all the biggest news stories that made the last few weeks so interesting. Here are the stories we're discussing this week: Disney announces that the Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser will make its final voyage this September, citing high operating costs and failure to meet expectations for booking performance. https://www.wdwmagic.com/resorts/star-wars-galactic-starcruiser/news/18may2023-star-wars-galactic-starcruiser-at-walt-disney-world-to-permanently-close.htm  Disney Dining Plan is returning to Walt Disney World in January 2024! https://www.keytotheworldtravel.com/disney-world-dining-plan-returning-2024/ Also, no more theme park reservations (for most guests)! Disney Parks head Josh D'amaro says theme parks will look for more ways to simplify the theme park planning experience after hearing numerous complaints that the experience is too complicated. This comes after Disney announced they are working on a way for guests to make Lightning Lane selections in advance so they don't have to work so hard in the morning before going into the parks. https://www.wdwmagic.com/other/disney-genie/news/22may2023-disney-parks-head-josh-damaro-says-disney-will-continue-to-simplify-the-park-experience-following-criticism-of-being-overly-complex.htm  We take some time to discuss how the increasingly complicated process of planning a vacation at Walt Disney World Resort, as well as the increasing removal of free added-value perks for on site guests, has seriously hurt bookings.  The lineup for the Eat to the Beat Concert Series at EPCOT's International Food and Wine Festival has been announced, including some exciting new artists for 2023 https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2023/05/first-look-2023-eat-to-the-beat-concert-series-at-epcot/  New restaurant alert! Episode 78 Season 7 of the My DVC Points Podcast was brought to you by: DVC Resale Market - Industry Leader in DVC Resales DVC Rental Store - DVC Point Rentals Monera Financial - Exclusively Financing DVC Contracts Patreon supporters in the My DVC Points VIP Producer Club. Story #1 Harmony Barber Shop Reopening Harmony Barber Shop will reopen on July 31 for the world's most magical haircut. A limited number of reservations for this timeless experience will be bookable in the My Disney Experience app beginning June 28. Walk-in appointments will be accepted based on availability. Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique was confirmed to be reopening later this year at both Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort, but no specific dates have been provided. Source: Disney Parks Blog Story #2 Genie+ Changes at Walt Disney World In an announcement that Walt Disney World Resort will open bookings for theme park tickets, Disney Resort hotel stays and packages for visits in 2023 on June 8, a change to Genie+ was also mentioned. Starting June 8, Disney Genie+ will only be offered for purchase through the My Disney Experience app on the day of your visit. Previously, Disney offered the option to purchase this service pre-arrival as a ticket add-on. This means that moving forward, whether you have an Annual Pass, multi- or single-day ticket, you may only purchase Disney Genie+ service on the day of your visit via the app, one day at a time, subject to availability. Disney hopes this adjustment will help manage the strong demand guests have shown for Disney Genie+. Disney stated, on average, guests who purchase Disney Genie+ service will continue to enter 2-3 attractions or experiences each day using the Lightning Lane entrance when the first selection is made early in the day. Any tickets already purchased that include Disney Genie+ service for dates later in 2022 will still be honored. Note this update is also only happening at Walt Disney World Resort and will not affect guests at Disneyland Resort. Disney also confirmed the early theme park entry benefit for Disney Resort hotel guests will continue beyond the 50th Anniversary for visits throughout all of 2023! This benefit gives Disney Resort guests an opportunity to enter ANY of the 4 Walt Disney World Resort theme parks to enjoy select attractions, shops, and dining EVERY day (valid admission, park reservation, and Resort ID required). Villas at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa continued to dominate however Disney's Riviera Resort tallied its highest monthly sales numbers in more than two years. 310,866 DVC points were sold in April 2022 for the 11 resorts at Walt Disney World. The last time DVC sales topped the 300,000-point mark was in July 2013 when 364,416 points were sold. Coincidentally, July 2013 was also the second month of sales for the original Villas at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. Grand Floridian accounted for 57.2% of April's sales, while Disney's Riviera Resort represented 30.0% of total sales. Villas at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort — In its second month since resuming sales, 177,819 points were sold for Grand Floridian. It was the largest number of points sold for a single resort in a single month since Disney's Riviera Resort sold 181,289 points in January 2020. On April 15, 2022, Disney declared additional vacation homes for the DVC inventory at Riviera. 180 of Riviera's 341 vacation homes are now available for DVC members to book using points. The good news, though, is that the premiere will feature the first TWO episodes! I think that's worth the wait for two days.Brenda: Starting April 18th, Character Meet and Greets – including hugs and autographs – will be returning to Disney locations! We're talking Disneyland, Walt Disney World, Disney Cruise Line, and Aulani here! For openers it will be at select locations only but throughout the spring and summer more locations will be opening up.Mike: Coming in July, the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival will be returning to Walt Disney World! The dates are July 14 - November 19, so there is plenty of time to enjoy this great festival. There will be more than 25 Global Marketplaces located throughout Epcot, and the Eat to the Beat Concert Series will be going on as well.Connect with us! Cindy and I were part of the Magical Blogorail back in the day, so we've been friends for quite some time. Today, we are going to talk about planning a solo trip, as well as make sure that everyone understands some of the changes at Disney due to the pandemic. Welcome to the podcast, Cindy!Benefits of Traveling to Walt Disney World Alone:You get to do exactly what you want to do without having to worry about anyone else's needs or wants. That is extremely difficult if you are visiting with other people, especially children. You can approach the parks at your own pace. If you want to be there rope drop to closing, you can. If you want to sleep in and take your time, you can do that too. It is entirely up to you.You are always a “single rider.” Not just on the rides that offer that feature. It's not unusual to get your own row on a ride or even your own vehicle when it's not very busy.It is much easier to navigate through the crowds alone.Things to Consider Before Booking:This varies greatly, depending on your home situation. If you are single or have no children, then it is much easier to plan.If you do have children, you need to consider how much of a disruption your being gone will be and then work around that.Solo Trips Are Not for Everyone:If you are really uncomfortable doing things at home alone (shopping, eating out, etc.), then you may not enjoy a solo trip to Walt Disney World. If experiencing things at the parks without your loved ones would make you sad, you may not enjoy this type of trip. This Day in Disney History for April 11:2006: Winnie the PoohDisney Who's Who CharacterWoody from Toy StoryA little bit of Walt“Fantasy, if it's really convincing, can't become dated, for the simple reason that it represents a flight into a dimension that lies beyond the reaches of time.” - Walt DisneyComing next week: Watch us on YouTube!
