What would you do for love? This week we are discussing a man who had an extreme answer to this question, Samuel Bellamy. When he was told that he was too poor to marry a Cape Codder by the name of Goodie Hallett, Sam decided that he would just have to get rich as quickly as possible. Which (considering his only skill was sailing) naturally led him down the road to piracy. But would he be good at it? Would he make enough money to win his Goodie? And what would Goodie do while she waited? All this and more will be answered, regardless of if you want it to be!Guest Host: Emma Heathcote (Who does not like extended discussions regarding nautical administration) Hosted on Acast. The extraterrestrial comedy podcast where we probe someone who is officially the most successful pirate in history, Black Sam Bellamy. Black Sam came from humble beginnings, a young British Navy sailor who turned treasure hunter in order to secure the marriage of Sam's true love (Sam had to get rich or die trying). Things went a bit sideways however when Sam found that the 1715 Treasure Fleet had already been recovered (well, the easy bits at least) meaning that Sam had no quick and easy treasure to achieve his goal. What's a skilled man of the sea to do when in need of money? That's right, PIRATE. Black Sam Bellamy would come in to contact with famous pirates Henry Jennings, Benjamin Hornigold and Blackbeard and join the Flying Gang but Sam would become more successful than all of them, depending upon how you define success… From storming ships naked to deceiving ships with fake flags, Sam earned well over one hundred million dollars in today's currency. At the height of Sam's success however, Sam longed for love. Allegedly. Truthfully. At this very same moment, it is alleged that Sam's love, who had encountered misery whilst waiting for Sam, placed a curse on Sam. Sam, unaware of the misery of his love, would one day return but this day may just have been Sam's last. Was witchcraft responsible? Alongside that, we ask whether a pirate can be truly good if they put everything to the vote… All that and more on this week's file. Former All Blacks coach Ian Foster joins Martin Devlin on It's Only Sport to talk all about Sam Cane, with the loose forward announcing he will retire from international rugby at the end of the year. The 32-year-old has been in Japan on a playing sabbatical but will return to New Zealand in the coming months, meaning he could still put on the black jumper before the end of the year. Back in 2020, Ian Foster selected Cane as his skipper and the 95-test veteran held the role (for the most part) right through to the 2023 Rugby World Cup final defeat to South Africa. Foster talks to Devlin about the qualities that made Cane stand out as a worthy All Blacks captain, the toll that last year's World Cup final took on him, and much more.

In 1717, the Council of Trade and Plantations received "agreeable news" from New England. "Bellamy with his ship and Company" had perished on the shoals of Cape Cod. Who was this Bellamy and why did his demise please the government? Born Samuel Bellamy circa 1689, he was a pirate who operated off the coast of New England and throughout the Caribbean. Later known as "Black Sam," or the "Prince of Pirates," Bellamy became one of the wealthiest pirates in the Atlantic world before his untimely death. For the next two centuries, Bellamy faded into obscurity until, in 1984, he became newsworthy again with the discovery of his wrecked pirate ship. In Daring Exploits of Pirate Black Sam Bellamy: From Cape Cod to the Caribbean (The History Press, 2023), historian Dr. Jamie L.H. Goodall unveils the tragic life of Bellamy and the complex relationship between piracy and the colonial New England coast. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose forthcoming book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. He might not be the most famous pirate, but Black Sam Bellamy may have been the most successful: when his ship wrecked in 1717, it took Sam with it, along with an astonishing 4.1 tonnes of gold and treasure. Forbes estimated that at his death, the "Prince of Pirates" was worth more than $120 million. And he did it all for love. This week on the podcast, we talk to Dr Jamie Goodall about Bellamy's doomed romance with the "Witch of Wellfleet," Maria Hallett, his unusual battle tactics, and how the Whydah was found again in the 1980s. Jamie also offers tips for finding pirates in your own family tree--chances are, you may have one or two.
It is Friday on The Rickey Smiley Morning Show Podcast. In this episode, the RSMS crew talks about Kanye West's daughter, North, prefers to stay with Kanye instead of Kim. On a recent episode of The Kardashians, Kim talks about North saying that she loves how her dad has no chef, no nanny, no security and lives in a condo. She asks her mom why can't they live in an apartment instead of a $60 Million mansion with maids, chefs, nannies and security. Nipsey Hussle's assets have been split between his two children, Kross and Emani. The assets are a total of $11 Million and Lauren London has received half of that money for Kross and Nipsey's brother, Black Sam has received the other half as the legal guardian of Emani. Usher has known about his Super Bowl performance for a while but he had to keep it a secret. Suge Knight has made some claims about Akon on his podcast Collect Call. Knight said that Akon sexually assaulted an underage girl in a studio. Akon has gotten wind and he and his legal team are fighting back. They are filing defamation claims against Suge Knight even though he is serving a 28 year prison sentence. All of this and more on The Rickey Smiley Morning Show Podcast.
Well dear listeners, it's time for another criminal that gets compared to Robin Hood to make them seem like a better person, and because people aren't original. This time it's the Robin Hood of the sea, Samuel Bellamy. Also known as Black Sam, which sounds like a character in a minstrel show, but it's only because he had black hair so it's ok. That being said, Black Sam was dope as hell and accomplished some incredible feats of piracy. And the epilogue to his story is bonkers and comes outta nowhere. Enjoy!
We are back to discuss recent news including BLACK SAM?!?!!?! We also touch on basketball news, criminal behavior, and not our dead twin brother's wife. Our first ever Slander U bracket! Rate, Review, and Subscribe!
Samuel Bellamy, or "Black Sam" Bellamy, was an extraordinarily successful pirate, albeit for a very short time. Called the "Robin Hood of the Seas," he abhorred violence, treated his victims humanely, and was very generous to his men. When he and his fleet captured the slave ship Whydah Gally, he scored a huge payday, but it all wound up lost for almost 300 years when the Whydah was wrecked in a storm off Cape Cod in 1717. This is the story of the Gentleman Pirate, a ship laden with riches, and the discovery of its treasure. For images and sources please visit https://shipwrecksandseadogs.com/blog/2023/03/04/black-sam-bellamy-the-whydah-gally/

They were the Democrats have a very undemocratic age in our time when we speak about pirates, we usually think about swaggering Buccaneers, you know, those pirates of the Caribbean movies where sexy Johnny Depp, stagger walks along the key like Keith, Richard, John, after a bender. Now it always, when you're making these comparisons, it says more about us than it does about the actual historical era.For pirates in their golden age of the 17 hundreds were extraordinarily democratic. Their ships would crammed with men and women of all kinds of different cultures. Many were former slaves who were given the choice of slavery on shore or freedom and C gladly chose to become pirates. Others were indigenous natives.Others were common. People escaping a time when many of our four parents were debt slaves and agricultural service. And in our era, when a CEO like Jeff Bezos can bank roll and entire ego-driven private space program, while his workers struggle to pay their medical bills, it's worth noting that the pay level between a common sailor and a captain on a pirate ship was only twice as much. However, that pay could be massive. Edward Black beard teach was worth $12 million. Captain John Bowen, a Creole pirate was worth $40 million, but the greatest of them all was black. Sam Bellamy. And 300 years later, Forbes magazine would estimate that this one coup made black Sam the richest of all the pirates of all time. And then he sailed into a dark and stormy night off the coast of Cape Cod. And the legends began.
How did "Black Sam Bellamy" become the wealthiest pirate in history, with only just a little over a year in piracy? The truth is more complex than what appears on the surface. The key lies in his early mistreatment as a young sailor, and the lead up to the democratic way he ran his fleet.—Website: https://braddhall.comSocialsInstagram: https://instagram.com/beyondtheharborTwitter: https://twitter.com/BeyondHarborYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRjes2tzXIn14KUvG3SGVhw

This episode's guest, Jessica Cale, and I went on a journey about pirates. Yes, the Golden Age Pirates specifically, with the likes of Blackbeard, Black Sam, Anne Bonny, and Ching Shih (the Pirate Queen). We dispelled some myths and discussed some misconceptions about the considerably progressive pirate life on the high seas. Jessica is a historian, an author, a podcaster, and a blogger.

Sam Cane capped his debut season as All Blacks captain with two honours at New Zealand Rugby's annual awards last night, taking out the overall player of the year as well as All Black of the year. It's been a strange 2020 for the new skipper, from Covid-19 disruptions to being beaten by Australia, losing to Argentina for the first time, but still managing to win the Bledisloe Cup and Tri-Nations title. The issue of head injuries is also back in the spotlight as former players continue to join a class-action lawsuit against World, England and Wales rugby, which alleges a failure to protect them from the risks caused by concussions. Rugby reporter Joe Porter spoke to Cane about whether or not he feels World and New Zealand Rugby are doing enough to decrease the risk of head injuries and the flow on effects.

I want to support you better, dear listener! In this special Hallow’s Eve/Samhain episode, the makers of the Queers + Queens tarot deck share about challenging gender norms & euro-centrism in traditional tarot, creating a magickal practice that is decolonized + liberatory, and expressing the joy + power of the queer community.Aerin Black, Sam Kahn, and Bex Carlos are all such insightful individuals, and together they make for a magickal triumverate. "Black Sam Bellamy and the Wreck of the Whydah" tells the story of the notorious pirate Sam Bellamy, who, according to Forbes Magazine, acquired more stolen wealth than any pirate in his time. He was only involved in piracy for one year, 1716-1717, but was remarkably successful, and had accumulated a wealth of treasure. According to Cape Cod legend, he, upon setting out upon his voyages, had fallen in live with a 16 year old girl named Maria Hallett who he promised he would return to as a wealthy man. She became pregnant, accidentally killed her baby, and was imprisoned for neglect, going crazy through it all. Sam returned, and was just off the coast where she was staying when a storm struck and his ship went down. As the years went by, the legend that his ship had contained riches faded and disappeared, until 1984, when a treasure hunter named Barry Clifford found the wreck containing 4 tons of silver and gold. Janet Elaine Smith has been writing for over 30 years, but her first book was not published until 2000. Now she has 22 books published and available. Three of them are non-fiction, including a memoir of the 9 years she and her late husband spent in Venezuela. "The rest of them are fun," she says. She writes in many genres, but her favorite is time travel, including her newest book, Port Call to the Future. "It is such fun to be able to change history." Several of her books are based on things she has found in her genealogy searches. She says her husband got all the rich and famous ancestors, while she got the fun ones. A Little about her new Book! When pirate Black Sam Bellamy's ship, the Whydah, sank off the coast of Cape Cod in 1717, everyone from the crew was found, either dead or alive, except Black Sam himself. He was never seen again-until he washed up at a celebration of his demise that Blair Smythe hosted. Kin to Sam's love in the 1700s, Maria Hallett, Sam thought she was Maria. As Sam learns to deal with today's modern world, Blair sets out to prove that he is who he says he is. A fun romp through two times, with events that author Janet Elaine Smith says surprised even her. Port Call to the Future is the sequel to Maria's story, House Call to the Past.
