PORTRAITS OF THE ARTISTS (AKA DENZEL MONTH) has been a hell of a time and it's been fun to examine the lives of such cornerstone actors in Paul Robeson and Denzel Washington. Those two men seem very different in personality but for this final edition of our theme, Denzel takes on a role that might be the closest to Robeson's preferred type. A struggling, hardworking, family man trying to make ends meet in a medical emergency. It was a hit during a time when random dramas seemed to be seen, though not much of it gets said even in context of the Denzel oeuvre and broader film culture. A very direct critique of the U.S. medical system in Nick Cassavetes's absolutely dripping melodrama from 2002, “JOHN Q.”. Denzel is the obvious everyman who successfully holds his own dramatic weight. It also stars Kimberly Elise, James Woods, Anne Heche (RIP), Robert Duvall and Ray Fuckin' Liotta. We miss you Ray. The people finally get a little propaganda in this far from perfect story that occasionally brushes up against “ridiculous”. Charming family dynamic with a few good dramatic moments and maybe a little misdirected in its cleanliness through the home stretch. Nonetheless, we can all relate to dealing with our shitty medical system. So long January's theme. Book: Beloved By Toni Morrison Film: Beloved (1998) Beloved is a 1987 novel by the American writer Toni Morrison. Set after the American Civil War, it tells the story of a family of formerly enslaved people whose Cincinnati home is haunted by a malevolent spirit. Beloved is inspired by an event that actually happened: Margaret Garner, an enslaved person in Kentucky, who escaped and fled to the free state of Ohio in 1856. She was subject to capture in accordance with the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850; when U.S. marshals burst into the cabin where Garner and her husband had barricaded themselves, she was attempting to kill her children, and had already killed her two-year-old daughter, to spare them from being returned to slavery. Morrison had come across an account of Garner titled "A Visit to the Slave Mother who Killed Her Child" in an 1856 newspaper article published in the American Baptist, and reproduced in The Black Book, a miscellaneous compilation of black history and culture that Morrison edited in 1974. Beloved is a 1998 American psychological horror drama film directed by Jonathan Demme and starring Oprah Winfrey, Danny Glover, and Thandiwe Newton. Based on Toni Morrison's 1987 novel of the same name, the plot centers on a former slave after the American Civil War, her haunting by a poltergeist, and the visitation of her reincarnated daughter. Despite being a box office bomb Beloved received an Oscar nomination for Best Costume Design for Colleen Atwood, the film received mostly positive reviews, and both Danny Glover and Kimberly Elise received praise for their performances. This week, we're joined by a guest for the very first time, which is exciting! Unfortunately they have brought with them an unwatched DVD from their own collection which was excrutiating! JACKSON McDONALD (Roxy Fever) guides us back into bio-pics with a movie that at times feels like a made-for-TV Ray, 2009's Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story, starring Cuba Gooding Jr., Kimberly Elise, and Aunjanue Ellis. It's a movie Jackson believes found its way onto his shelf via his father-in-law, and it's not something we recommend anyone watch before listening along. You can hear more of Jackson's film takes on his own movie podcast, History Lesson: Part II with co-host Tyler Shipley. If you're a complete masochist who does want to see the movie before listening to the podcast, Gifted Hands is currently streaming on Netflix Canada at the time of publication. We'll be back next week with Ben Affleck in The Accountant.

This week we bring you another film in which John C McGinley plays a cop trying to catch some bank robbers. We also discussed the BET awards. You can tell we don't watch them anyone. But congrats to all the winners, especially Lil Baby for winning "Gospel/Inspiration" award. (Adonis was shocked) R.Kelly got hit with a 30 year sentence in New York. (Nigga gone be giving free concerts like a muthaf...) But we talked about still listening to his music and cracked jokes about this sick man. Speaking of sick, Ceasar from 'Black Ink Crew' challenged his dogs to a WWE 'Tables, Ladders, & Chair' match. It took 2 unprotected chair shots and dog cage tossed off an incline for VH1 to pull the plug on his show. Kimberly Elise pissed people off with her IG post, celebrating the overturning of Roe v Wade. Now we see why Charles did her like that! Eric Holder couldn't go to court because he got his ass beat in jail. Justice for Nip! Cardi B new song, 'Hot Shit' ft Lil Durk and Kanye West, just dropped. We played it on the pod and discussed our initial reaction. Lil TJay update: He's awake and the breathing tube is no longer needed. According to sources, he's awake and alert, voice is still the same. Investigation is still ongoing. The McDonalds skit involving with the baby mama mad at her baby daddy bringing his son food and not her other kids sparked a convo throughout the socials. Though the Adonis and Fav would be petty in the situation, Milt ain't buying a damn thang for your other kids. We talked about the skit and gave our 2 cents about it. There was a Twitter post that compared rappers to NBA players. The list compared Shaq to Lil Wayne, Giannis to Snoop, Jordan to Jay Z, just to give an example. The good folks at This Thing Of Minds Podcast formed our own list. Some of the comparisons were obvious but we had to really think about the others. Is Dennis Rodman, Young Thug? They are both talented but I mean, they both was in dresses, and painted their nails. And Rodman was an enforcer just like Thugga... anyway. SLAPPERS: Dom Kennedy "Corsa" John Gabbana "Not A Sad Song" Wallie the Sensei "03 Flow"
Would you buy everyone McDonalds or?? Kimberly Elise is a pro-lifer, umm okay. And more this week.

Throughout our Boss Bitch-themed season, we have discussed badass women in many forms and narratives. However, the women in this movie went so beyond the call of duty that they put the other so called “boss bitches” to shame. Set It Off manages to display female characters who exist in a whole other realm of power, bravado, and fearlessness, while also managing to be loyal, vulnerable, tender, and often HILARIOUS, sending the three of us through the FULL range of emotion while watching. This along with its incredible story telling, iconic scenes, and star-studded-as-hell cast are just pieces of what makes this film legendary. If you haven't seen Set It Off, treat yourself and watch it TODAY, and tune into our ep to hear us discuss this unforgettable film at length. Other subjects covered in this ep include our own experiences with petty crime, our thoughts on rich men in movies picking out clothes for women, unruly puppies, and the most recent Eurocup! Have we all really never seen or talked about the movie Set It Off, a movie which features Queen Latifah doing two guns, one-in-each-hand as best as anybody outside of Chow Yun-fat ever did it? That turned out to be the case. But wait, there's more: John Q as well, a movie that dares to ask the question of whether James Woods can play someone who has a legitimate moral arc where the conclusion is that he can in fact be a good guy. Today, tonight, this morning: there's no time like the present to catch up on these, The Manchurian Candidate, Morgan's refusal to talk about Loki, and Tucker's undeniably obnoxious commitment to watching an MTV game show instead of the Criterion Channel.
This week's Throwback Thursday episode we review Set It Off! Starring Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, Vivica A. Fox, Kimberly Elise, John C. McGinley, and Blair Underwood.
