He might not be the most famous pirate, but Black Sam Bellamy may have been the most successful: when his ship wrecked in 1717, it took Sam with it, along with an astonishing 4.1 tonnes of gold and treasure. Forbes estimated that at his death, the "Prince of Pirates" was worth more than $120 million. And he did it all for love. This week on the podcast, we talk to Dr Jamie Goodall about Bellamy's doomed romance with the "Witch of Wellfleet," Maria Hallett, his unusual battle tactics, and how the Whydah was found again in the 1980s. Jamie also offers tips for finding pirates in your own family tree--chances are, you may have one or two.

A few times each year, the Eastern Paradise-Whydah puts on its party clothes. This small finch is found in East Africa, and males and females generally share the same nondescript appearance. But when it's time to mate, the male sprouts extravagant, long, black tail feathers two or three times the length of his body. The feathers make it look like he's wearing a long black cape, thus the nickname, “the widow bird.”More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? Subscribe to our weekly newsletter. Samuel Bellamy, or "Black Sam" Bellamy, was an extraordinarily successful pirate, albeit for a very short time. Called the "Robin Hood of the Seas," he abhorred violence, treated his victims humanely, and was very generous to his men. When he and his fleet captured the slave ship Whydah Gally, he scored a huge payday, but it all wound up lost for almost 300 years when the Whydah was wrecked in a storm off Cape Cod in 1717. This is the story of the Gentleman Pirate, a ship laden with riches, and the discovery of its treasure. For images and sources please visit https://shipwrecksandseadogs.com/blog/2023/03/04/black-sam-bellamy-the-whydah-gally/

Arrgh! On April 26, 1717, amidst the golden age of piracy, Captain Samuel ‘Black Sam' Bellamy tried to navigate a violent storm  off of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The flagship of his pirate fleet, The Whydah Gally, shipwrecked and sank to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean where it stayed until 1984. Now, more than 300 years after the wreck, HBH is excited to be joined by the man who discovered the Whydah, Underwater Archaeologist, Explorer and Author: Barry Clifford. The only pirate shipwreck in the world whose whose identity is unquestionably authenticated, the Whydah contained a vast treasure including the booty from more than 50 ships which the 140-plus man crew had pirated, as well as 60 cannons. Surprisingly, the 110-foot Whydah contained much more than its buried treasure. Also excavated was extensive evidence and documentation that perhaps the most progressive, diverse and inclusive democracies in the world at the time were found on-board pirate ships, 59 years before the founding of the United States. Moreover, due to a promise to his close friend and First Mate, John F. Kennedy Jr., none of the artifacts from the Whyda shipwreck have ever been sold. They are on display at the incredible Whydah Pirate Museum in Yarmouth, Massachusetts. Barry Clifford is the author of seven books including ‘Expedition Whydah: The Story of the World's First Excavation of a Pirate Treasure Ship and the Man Who Found Her'.

'Buried Treasure' more likely was shipwrecks among which loot was known to be recoverable. 00:34:18 - The Skull & Crossbones Flag, like so much of the Pirates possessions, was stolen. It was originally a symbol of the Freemasons and was usurped by the pirates because it often was flown as a signal of 'no harm'.  Later, captains would design their own 'dark flags' that often still included skulls and other intimidating imagery. 00:36:54 - Shelby asks: Were pirates competitive among each other. Dawn discusses Pirates of the Caribbean… begrudgingly.00:39:22 - A Privateer is an individual that is so much like a pirate they're sometimes indistinguishable - but the lines are often very clear... to all but the executioner. 00:41:10 - Dawn's Favorite PILF's 00:41:19 - Blackbeard. Life's Tough Media is pleased to announce the latest episode of our “Life's Tough: Explorers are TOUGHER!” podcast series. Hosted by Richard Wiese—explorer extraordinaire and President of The Explorers Club—this episode features Barry Clifford, an underwater archeologist and among the world's best known underwater explorers, known for discovering the remains of Samuel Bellamy's wrecked pirate ship The Whydah, the only fully verified and authenticated pirate shipwreck of the Golden Age of Piracy ever discovered in the world. In this episode, Barry Clifford tells how he first got excited about exploring by spending hours playing in the drained cranberry bogs by his house, and finding the treasure that surfaced there. Barry grew up in Brewster Massachusetts and remembers hearing his uncles telling tales of the war, and their latest fishing expeditions. Most exciting was the story they told of the wrecked pirate ship, the Whydah (pronounced wih-duh) and the legend of Samuel Bellamy and his girlfriend—a condemned witch at the time, whose eyes were the color of the deep sea and her hair like cornsilk. “I'm just fascinated with solving riddles,” Barry says. “The key to a lot of this is having experience with diving and being able to recognize things that most people wouldn't recognize.” Some of his discoveries include The Fiery Dragon, commanded by the pirate William “Billy One-Hand” Condon; Captain Morgan's flagship, The Oxford; the wreck of The Sainte-Marieoff the coast of Madagascar that he believes was part of Captain Kidd's treasure, where he found a 110 lb. silver ingot in. But then Barry found it! The legendary pirate ship from his uncle's stories—the remains of the Whydah—just off the coast of Wellfleet, Massachusetts. The Whydah is the only fully verified and authenticated pirate shipwreck of the Golden Age of Piracy ever discovered in the world and it is Barry's most cherished discovery. Artifacts from the wreck provide historians with unique insights into the material, political and social culture of early 18th-century piracy. According to the federal admiralty law in 1988, the Massachusetts Supreme Court ruled that 100% of the Whydah rightfully belonged to Barry Clifford. In fact, Barry also has exclusive diving rights to the site which is patrolled by the National Park Service and U.S. Coast Guard. Barry has kept the Whydah Collection intact without selling a single piece of the more than 200,000 recovered artifacts, which includes tens of thousands of coins, more than 60 cannon, and the "everyday" objects used by the crew. He maintains a large private facility in which the majority of the Whydah artifacts are kept for conservation and examination; however, Clifford exhibits a variety of the ship's artifacts, as well as from many other shipwreck discoveries, for the public to enjoy at his Whydah Pirate Museum in West Yarmouth, Massachusetts. In addition, a smaller selection of artifacts are kept with an international touring exhibition through a National Geographic/Premier Exhibitions joint venture, called Real Pirates. Join Richard and Barry in their fascinating conversation about pirates, their treasures, and the stories these fabled shipwrecks hold.

Paul Kemprecos' fiction-writing career owes its start to the bad navigation of an 18th-century pirate. For it was in 1717 that a ship named Whydah went aground off Cape Cod, reportedly carrying a fabulous treasure. Samuel Bellamy, the ship's captain, was drowned along with most of the crew. In the 1980s, three salvage groups went head-to-head, competing to find the wreck. He was working for a newspaper covering the treasure hunt. The controversy over the salvage got hot at times, and he thought there might be a book based on the story. He developed my own detective, an ex-cop, diver, fisherman, and PI named Aristotle "Soc" Socarides. He was more philosophical than hard-boiled. His first appearance was in "Cool Blue Tomb," which won the Shamus Award for Best Paperback novel. After many years in the newspaper business, I turned to writing fiction and churned out five more books in the series. Clive Cussler blurbed: "There can be no better mystery writer in America than Paul Kemprecos." Several months after the release of "Bluefin Blues," Clive called and said a spin-off from the Dirk Pitt series was in the works. It would be called the NUMA Files, and he wondered if I would be interested in tackling the job. I took on the writing of "Serpent," which brought into being Kurt Austin and the NUMA Special Assignments Team. Austin had some carry-over from Soc, and another team member, Paul Trout, had been born on Cape Cod. The book made The New York Times bestseller list, as did every one of seven NUMA Files that followed, including "Polar Shift," which bumped "The Da Vinci Code" for first place. After eight NUMA Files, He went back to writing solo. He wrote an adventure book entitled, "The Emerald Scepter," which introduced a new hero, Matinicus "Matt" Hawkins. In 2013, He brought Soc back again in a seventh Socarides book entitled, "Grey Lady." After that book, he wrote a sequel to the first Matt Hawkins book, entitled, "The Minoan Cipher," which was nominated for a Thriller Award in the Best Paperback category for 2017 by the International Thriller Writers. The eighth Soc book, "Shark Bait," incorporates the aforementioned story of the Whydah, its doomed captain Samuel Bellamy, and his lover, Mary Hallett. His wife Christi and he live on Cape Cod where she works as a financial advisor. They share a circa 1865 farmhouse with two cats. They have three children and seven granddaughters. "Black Sam Bellamy and the Wreck of the Whydah" tells the story of the notorious pirate Sam Bellamy, who, according to Forbes Magazine, acquired more stolen wealth than any pirate in his time.  He was only involved in piracy for one year, 1716-1717, but was remarkably successful, and had accumulated a wealth of treasure. According to Cape Cod legend, he, upon setting out upon his voyages, had fallen in live with a 16 year old girl named Maria Hallett who he promised he would return to as a wealthy man. She became pregnant, accidentally killed her baby, and was imprisoned for neglect, going crazy through it all. Sam returned, and was just off the coast where she was staying when a storm struck and his ship went down. As the years went by, the legend that his ship had contained riches faded and disappeared, until 1984, when a treasure hunter named Barry Clifford found the wreck containing 4 tons of silver and gold. Several of her books are based on things she has found in her genealogy searches. She says her husband got all the rich and famous ancestors, while she got the fun ones.  A Little about her new Book! When pirate Black Sam Bellamy's ship, the Whydah, sank off the coast of Cape Cod in 1717, everyone from the crew was found, either dead or alive, except Black Sam himself. He was never seen again-until he washed up at a celebration of his demise that Blair Smythe hosted. Kin to Sam's love in the 1700s, Maria Hallett, Sam thought she was Maria. As Sam learns to deal with today's modern world, Blair sets out to prove that he is who he says he is. A fun romp through two times, with events that author Janet Elaine Smith says surprised even her. Port Call to the Future is the sequel to Maria's story, House Call to the Past.

Tonight's opening monologue specifically targets the Simpons for having the gall to trash the PotC3 DVDs (which grossed 3 times as did the Simpsons Movie). Also a special toast to Sam Bellamy on the anniversary of the sinking of the Whydah. Be sure and look for us at the NorCal Pirate Festival and the Port Washington Pirate Festival, both this June!
