He's also the author of the non fiction book Blitzed: Drugs in Nazi Germany, published in English in 2016. In this episode he discusses his newest book, Tripped: Nazi Germany, the CIA, and the Dawn of the Psychedelic Age, which was published earlier this year. In this episode, Joe interviews Norman Ohler: award-winning novelist, screenwriter, and journalist. Following in the footsteps of Blitzed: Drugs in the Third Reich, his newest book, Tripped: Nazi Germany, the CIA, and the Dawn of the Psychedelic Age, tells the story of how the Nazi's passion for methamphetamine turned into a curiosity about LSD, and how their experiments with trying to harness LSD as a truth drug eventually led to the CIA continuing their research under their MKUltra program. The book came about from trying to understand why LSD never became medicine – a question posed by his father, when discussing how LSD could help with his wife's progressing Alzheimer's symptoms. He discusses: His path to becoming a “gonzo historian” and how his early psychedelic research was inspired by a friend's discovery of methamphetamine tablets from the 40s Henry Beecher's LSD experiments with students at Harvard, and how researchers often didn't know they were contributing to MKUltra His recent appearances on The Joe Rogan Experience and Jesse Watters Primetime His mother's experience with microdosing LSD and why police showed up at his father's door with a warrant Why he believes psychedelics will be legalized in the U.S. in the next 10 years and more! In his final days, Adolf Hitler wallowed in self pity, sent children into war, and held tea parties into the wee hours of the morning. He also threw himself a birthday party. The guest list was a real who's who of Most Evil Humans! Ultimately, Hitler decided to take his ball and go home. (And by that, we of course mean that he shot himself and went to hell.) In TRIPPED: Nazi Germany, the CIA, and the Dawn of the Psychedelic Age (Mariner Books; on sale April 9), Norman Ohler, New York Times bestselling author of Blitzed: Drugs in the Third Reich, returns with a provocative new history of drugs and postwar America, exposing the hidden connections between the Nazis and the early days of drugs in the United States. Based on extensive archival research on both sides of the Atlantic, TRIPPED examines how fascist experiments into psychedelics covertly influenced CIA research and secretly shaped America's War on Drugs. As Ohler reveals, "When most people think of LSD, they don't think of the Nazis, and yet that unseen hand played a role in framing our laws around this class of drug and in limiting our ability to use psychedelics for medical research." In fact, Ohler was inspired to explore this topic as a result of his own mother's medical condition. His father wanted to know why he couldn't just get LSD at the pharmacy for his wife if it was supposed to help treat her Alzheimer's disease. It was this question-why can't patients in need of psychedelic therapy access it?-that launched Ohler on his investigation for TRIPPED. Unlike cannabis which is on the precipice of global legalization, psychedelic substances containing promising healing potential are still bound up with taboos. With TRIPPED, Ohler aims to alleviate the fear and disinformation around these drugs by educating readers on the untold story behind them.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Hitler's military forces achieved immense success in the early years of World War II by making the Blitzkrieg (or “Lightning War”) central to their offensive strategy. Norman Ohler, author of Blitzed: Drugs in the Third Reich, tells the story of how methamphetamine enabled this success, sometimes over the opposition of medical and military skeptics, and how its value diminished as the war dragged on. Even more fascinating is the story Ohler tells about Adolf Hitler's extraordinary consumption of oxycodone, cocaine and an ever evolving concoction of hormones, steroids, vitamins and quack remedies administered by injection by his personal physician, Dr. Theodor Morell. Initially helpful in enabling Hitler to perform and project strength, the drugs ultimately fed his megalomania and delusion and quite likely shaped the decisions he made in the latter years of the war, when Dr. Morell became his most frequent and trusted companion.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Lovers Harro and Libertas Schulze-Boysen formed an unconventional and enigmatic network of artists and intellectuals to resist the Nazis in the 1930s and 40s Berlin. As an officer of the Luftwaffe and Nazi film worker Harro and Libertas sought to operate in plain site, and combine friendship with opportunities for espionage. This gripping spy tale asks the question of how much we are willing to risk to challenge the status quo and change society. Norman spoke to me from Berlin about his research and the Nazi's unsuccessful attempt to erase all memory of Harro and Liberta's spy ring. This week we start by talking about amphetamines. We then discuss the book "Blitzed: Drugs in the Third Reich" by Norman Ohler.
How would WWII have ended differently without the influence of methamphetamine? We don't know, but we can be pretty sure that it made a serious difference. In this episode, Reagan tells us about Norman Ohler's "Blitzed: Drugs in Nazi Germany," and Jaran uses Shaunti Feldhahn's "For Women Only: What You Need to Know About the Inner Lives of Men" to remind us that men tend to feel insecure. This episode is sponsored by Rebound by Kwame Johnson and the Bruno Johnson Series by David Putnam. Enter our mystery giveaway! Questions 1. Hi there, This never-ending winter has me looking forward to the vacation I've planned for this June and I have visions of laying on the beach for days at a time with a good book. I'm not worried about being able to find good vacation reading material for myself, but my wife is a much pickier reader. Can you help me find a book that will keep her entertained so I can relax with my own book? She loves nonfiction and particularly enjoys heavy topics like the holocaust, dictatorships, and cults. Recent reads she has enjoyed include Blitzed: Drugs in the Third Reich by Norman Ohler and Without You, There is No Us: Undercover Amongst the Sons of North Korea's Elite by Suki Kim. I recently put The Road to Jonestown and Lilac Girls in her hands, but neither of those worked for her. Thanks in advance for your help! Best, --Brianna 2. I'm a single woman in my mid-30s and, while I am fine with my single status and enjoying my life as it is, almost all of my friends are partnering off and having children. I was feeling blue about it until I read Rebecca Traister's All the Single Ladies and Kate Bolick's Spinster, and am now looking for more reads that celebrate single women, especially single women without children. I'm looking specifically for books with female protagonists who get to enjoy a happy ending without being coupled off or having kids, or where the happy ending is not focused on coupledom (though it's fine if there's a relationship in the story). I read all fiction genres except horror and I also enjoy nonfiction, especially memoirs and biographies. Thanks in advance. I love the podcast! --Rebecca 3. Hi Amanda and Jenn! I just have to say y'all are the best, and I love this podcast so much. My to be read list grows every day (mostly because I just discovered this podcast so I am just binging my way through it :)) I have a request for a book for my boyfriend. He likes to read, but he's a really slow reader (this was my way of saying, he likes to read but doesn't read a lot, you know?), and we just moved in together and I noticed that almost all of his books are by straight white males. My new years resolution is to get him only books by...not straight white males. So. He likes fantasy and science fiction. (He loved the Name of the Wind, I think he liked Game of Thrones.) But I've already recommended him Octavia Butler, and N.K. Jemisin is on my to-read list. He also LOVES true crime and nonfiction/historical-ish books, like Devil in the White City. (I also already got him Killers of the Flower Moon before I made my resolution. Whoops.) Any recommendations are so welcome, in these genres or feel free to go crazy. Best, --Rachael 4. I've been feeling the inadequacy of my high school level American History education lately, as I've been listening to a lot of podcasts that have happened to bring up Asian American historical events that I realize I know very little about. I would like to brush up on my Asian American history in general but I don't know where to start. Do you have any nonfiction recs in this area, both in the overview theme and more specific and particular events and ethnic groups? Thank you much! --Rayne 5. I am getting very interested in language itself. This began with just loving novels with beautiful and pithy prose (so rec's in that vein are certainly welcome). Now I'm increasingly interested in linguistics and philology. While I'm so far fascinated by Steven Pinker's "The Language Instinct", I am hoping for books (nonfiction, memoirs, essay collections, or even novels) more welcoming to the lay linguist. For instance, Bill Bryson's "The Mother Tongue" is very much the sort of thing I'm hoping for more of, and I am currently working through and enamored by Jhumpa Lahiri's beautiful "In Other Words". So, where do I go when I finish that one? Thanks y'all! --Noah 6. Hi-ya! I am trying to be a less stupid white person. Recently I have read Between the World and Me by Ta-Nahisi Coates, the March series by Congressman John Lewis, and the quite excellent satire, I Am Not Sidney Poitier by Percival Everett. I loved them all, and would like to read more like them. I am planning to read more satires like Welcome to Braggsville, The Sellout, and Blackass, but are there other books on race that you can recommend, fiction or nonfiction? I would especially love some gems from the past that I may have missed, or something written by a woman! Many thanks!! --K Books Discussed Not So Stories edited by David Thomas Moore Bastard Out of Carolina by Dorothy Allison Bachelor Nation by Amy Kaufman My Grandfather Would Have Shot Me by Jennifer Teege Five Days at Memorial by Sheri Fink Death in the Air: The True Story of a Serial Killer, the Great London Smog, and the Strangling of a City by Kate Winkler Dawson Bachelor Girl by Betsy Israel (trigger warning: discussion of rape) The Extra Woman by Joanna Scutts I Can Barely Take Care of Myself by Jen Kirkman The Grace of Kings by Ken Liu The Poisoner’s Handbook by Deborah Blum Black Dahlia, Red Rose: The Crime, Corruption, and Cover-Up of America’s Greatest Unsolved Murder by Piu Eatwell The Making of Asian America by Erika Lee The Song Poet by Kao Kalia Yang Asian American Dreams: The Emergence of an American People by Helen Zia “Stories of Your Life” from Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang Proust and the Squid by Maryanne Wolf The Adventure of English: The Biography of a Language by Melvyn Bragg Eloquent Rage by Brittney Cooper The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson From #blacklivesmatter To Black Liberation by Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor

Norman Ohler’s Blitzed: Drugs in the Third Reich (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2017) explores the drug culture of Nazi Germany. Far from being a nation of physical and mental purity portrayed by Goebbels’s propaganda machine, Ohler shows Germany was a hub of drug production and abuse during the 1920s. Manufacturers like Merck and Bayer openly marketed their wares to the public, building the basis of so-called big pharma on intoxicants. Produced by Temmler, the Nazi elite embraced methamphetamine as a wonder drug, free of the connotations of disease and degeneracy associated with the drug culture of the Weimar years. Stimulants became a valuable tool in Germany’s wartime arsenal. The German military acknowledged the value of amphetamines and distributed Pervitin en masse. Ohler argues amphetamines powered the Wehrmacht’s armored Blitzkrieg of 1939-1941, defeating the Allies in France and elsewhere. These gains were short-lived, however. Nazi Germany’s Faustian bargain with drugs evaporated during the Battle of Stalingrad and in the distant steppes of the Soviet Union. Ever more powerful drug combinations were desperately sought by the Nazi state to save the Reich from annihilation, exposing horrors of the regime from experiments on concentration camp prisoners and drugged child soldiers. Blitzed details how Hitler’s personal physician, Dr. Theo Morell, administered vitamin concoctions and hormone injections common to athletic doping to pump up Hitler’s ailing body during the war years. Though Hitler had promised to cleanse the nation of drug abuse, he himself became utterly dependent on drugs to survive. Military defeat and destruction took their toll on Nazism embodied, Morell increasingly looked towards methamphetamine and oxycodone (Eukodal) to keep Hitler wake and alert during the last apocalyptic years of the Reich. In so doing, Morell himself built an impressive medical empire based on quack medicines and bought political access. Ohler shows how in the final months of the conflict, Morell’s supplies of drugs ran out, exposing Hitler’s frail body to his inner circle with health crises, symptoms of chemical withdraw, and fits of madness.
