Regarding the moving of the Holy Spirit, the first verses of Acts 2 show us that, in essence, we can respond in two ways. We can either look in with awe and wonder or foolishly mock. How will you respond to what you see the Holy Spirit doing, and how should we respond as a church?Support the show
The coming of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2, with tongues as of fire and a roar like violent wind, seems a far cry from many Canadians' hyper-reserved and solemn experience with church gatherings. If church life in the New Testament shows us anything, the gospel's advancement is exciting work. It was true then, and if we're open to the leading of the Holy Spirit, including here in Canada, it can be true for us today. Support the show

The pandemic wreaked havoc on our world like nothing else in our lifetime. The fallout continues with polarization, division, depression, isolation, distraction, and the disappearance of many people from inside the walls of the Church. But what if the events of the past few years were not a problem but an opportunity? What if God was using this time in our history to awaken people to His Kingdom and awaken His people to truly be a people of calm in chaos, to be salt and light in this dark world, and to be His ambassadors of hope and justice? What if God was stirring you and me to ask ourselves if we truly follow Jesus—or just watch from a distance? In this podcast, we are excited to sit down with a leading voice in the Canadian Church—someone who has cut through the distractions to call the Church back to becoming a disciple-making Church. Daniel Im is a pastor, Bible teacher, writer, and podcast host who is passionate about discipleship and the local church. He is the lead pastor of Beulah Alliance Church and the author of No Silver Bullets, Planting Missional Churches, You Are What You Do, and the newly released The Discipleship Opportunity. He lives in Edmonton, Alberta, with his wife, Christina, and their three children. In this conversation, we discuss topics such as: How the pandemic affected the Church and the world in which we currently live How we can navigate a post-truth, relativistic culture as people who believe in truth Why we should view the pandemic as an opportunity for greater growth in Christ The impact of “deconstruction” and what we can learn from it The dangers of consumerism in the Church and how God calls us deeper Why it is so essential for men to intentionally seek connection and friendship with other men We cover all this and more in this fascinating conversation with Daniel Im! ---------------------------------------------- Website: https://impactus.org/ Check Our Resources for Men: https://impactus.org/resources/ ---------------------------------------------- Follow us on Social Media Facebook Instagram LinkedIn Twitter This Is Me TV
In Acts 17:6, the early believers were described as those who "turned the world upside down." As they followed Jesus and boldly proclaimed the gospel; people, cities, and cultures were transformed. In the chapter leading up to this, we hear of the impact that they had on the city of Philippi. This story provided the framework for this message and an invitation to radically following Jesus. We had the immense privilege of welcoming Mark Buchanan; author (The Rest of God, Your Church is too Safe, Hidden in Plain Sight (and so much more)) and professor at Ambrose Univeristy in Calgary in Alberta. He preached this powerful message around at Terwillegar Community Church at our Resurgence Edmonton Gathering in March, 2024. We hope that this message blesses you. When Jesus called His disciples He called them to a movement. This movement was one that changed history on a global scale while impacting the lives of the individual disciples. As followers of Jesus today, we are called to be a part of that same movement and it happens on a large scale but it also happens in our hearts as we surrender ourselves to His plan and leadership. Travis Holownia, Executive Director of Resurgence Initiatives, preached a message around these themes at Kingdom Church (St. Albert) at our Resurgence Edmonton Gathering in February, 2024. This message was a call to each present to join in the movement of Jesus as well as an overview of the role we feel Resurgence is going to be playing in this movement as some major changes to our ministry are introduced and expanded on.We hope that this message blesses you. We are thrilled to introduce Dave Wright to you! Dave and Judy Wright are missionaries of Osler Mission Chapel who serve under Ethnos Canada, formerly New Tribes Mission. Their primary ministry for the first 20 years was as church planters in Papua New Guinea, and the last five years in Canada, in church engagement. Dave and Judy both came to faith at early ages while Dave became enthralled with tribal missions as a teenager through the stories of furlough-ing missionaries. It was while at Millar College of the Bible that God matured Dave's passion for missions and led Judy as well. While in Papua New Guinea, they had the privilege to be a part of the team that planted a church amongst an unreached people. They reduced the spoken only language and culture to writing to teach and translate God's Word so there was true biblical transformation that shone through that distinct culture. Today there are three churches with 100+ believers who are well on their way to maturity. Having worked themselves out of a job in 2015, the Lord transitioned them to a new ministry with Ethnos Canada to engage the Canadian Church. They are adapting Ethnos' sharpened approach to church planting/discipleship materials from overseas in order to provide the church with a relational structure to disciple-making so that all peoples are established in Christ and equipped to make disciples. Already, God has opened up many doors of opportunity to bless the church in Saskatchewan, working with Indigenous people. In this episode, Dave and Chris talk about what it looks like to bridge a cultural gap. This conversation is both extremely helpful and extremely challenging, and will give you lots of food for thought!

Are Christian pastors really get thrown in jail, simply for holding church services? Did the Albertan government seriously barricade a church? If true, does this mean that Covid is raging to such extremes in the Great White North, that all of society is being shut down... or is the church being singled out for "special" treatment? Dr. Michael Thiessen joins Joel to talk about the current state of relations between the church and the Canadian government. Thiessen is co-founder and Campaign Manager for Liberty Coalition Canada. Highlights from this episode: What is the Liberty Coalition Canada, and what are they trying to accomplish? What is really going on in Canada right now? Are churches facing persecution, or is this something else? How many Christian pastors have been arrested in Canada, and why? What can American Christians do to help our Canadian brethren? In this episode, we discuss the recent arrest of Pastor James Coates of Grace Life Church in Alberta. Pastor James faithfully executed his duties as a shepherd of Christ's flock, and was imprisoned for it. Sadly, many Christians have joined the chorus of the world's accusers. This event has further revealed the deep hypocrisy and unbelief in the Canadian Church, as well as muddled thinking and biblical illiteracy. The bible exhorts Christians to honour such men, share in their sufferings, and not be ashamed of Christ. Thankfully, Jesus Christ died for cowards and failures, like the Apostle Peter. He was preserved by Christ, and given a ministry of testifying to the rulers and authorities. May God have mercy on us. Pray for Pastor James and his family. For this episode, Mark Clark of Village Church takes a seat in the hosting chair to share a conversation with Guy Mason. Guy is the founding and senior pastor of City on a Hill. What began as a small group Bible study in a corner of Australia has since become a movement of seven churches in four different cities all united around one mission “to know Jesus and make Jesus known.” After sharing the story of City on a Hill, Mark asks Guy asks - How do you lead leaders? Due to the unique nature of the City on a Hill movement, Guy is a trustworthy voice to learn from in the area of stewarding the leaders around you. Guy shares about the importance of looking beyond yourself, and constantly speaking out what you see in those around you. “We need to do the hard work of identifying the gifts of our people” says Guy. Quoting Jesus, Guy explains that it is always more blessed to give than receive, and that is true of leadership as well. The best leaders do not set themselves up to flourish and fly, but others. They give. Both Mark and Guy go on to lean into the theme of encouragement - that every leader should freely give it, and humbly receive it. Tall Poppy Syndrome is rampant in the Canadian Church, and the leader today is acutely in need of not criticism born of comparison, but gospel-centred, uplifting words. Mark and Guy close by addressing the ever-important tension of where the pastor finds their identity. When the headwind is strong, and the emailed criticism is stacking up, the righteousness of Christ is the most secure garment for the church leader to wear.
