"Every opportunity to learn something new is what's going to grow your craft as an artist." The Toronto star talks discipline and gaining self-confidence as a producer. Cindy Li, AKA Ciel, always seems to be one step ahead. The label head, DJ, producer and activist has a hard-won career that dance music producers dream of—when she's not playing underground institutions across the globe, maintaining radio residencies, planning her own parties or collaborating with her favourite artists, she's thinking about what's next. "I'm the type of person that I'll stay up trying to finish everything rather than going to bed knowing that I didn't finish everything on my list," she tells RA's Nyshka Chandran in this week's episode. The Toronto resident is a conservatory-trained pianist who uses the discipline she learnt from a lifetime of lessons to balance DJing and production. "For me, it is challenging to juggle both because they use very different parts of my brain," she describes. A deep digger whose love for atmospheric textures and '90s grooves influences her fresh take on UKG, tech-house and jungle, Li has been putting out music since 2017. She has various EPs and singles under her name, plus several joint releases with the likes of Dan Only, D.Tiffany and Priori but says she didn't always have the confidence for a solo full-length. "I never thought I could write an album," she admits. But after playing live for the first time at MUTEK Montréal in 2021, that changed, leading to the 2023 release of Homesick, her debut album. "Don't ever let fear influence your decision-making," she says, describing how that show pushed her to overcome lingering doubts in the studio. For more on Li's process, listen to the episode in full.

Tom is flying solo and is joined by David Sikorjak (@DSikorjak), President of Dexterity Consulting, who is also an author, storyteller, and marketing strategist. In this episode, David introduces Fans Have More Friends, a new book he co-authored with Ben Valenta. He discusses a range of topics, including the inspiration behind the book, why fandoms are worth investigating, their greater psychological and social implications, and what it is like being a first-time author. STOP USING TEA BAGS! After writing a paper in college about the commodity tea trade, Cindy Li realized that the industry was inefficient and inequitable, with centuries-old structures rooted in colonialism. After working at a tea farm in Maui, she realized there had to be a better way to get people this fantastic product. She started Uproot Teas about a year and half ago and has set out to run a 100% sustainable company that is as good for you as it is for the farmers. She only works with 3 small regenerative farms ensuring that the product you get is absolutely the best tea you've ever had. Give her tea a try at Uprootteas.com and follow them @uproot.teas on Instagram. You can get 10% off your order using the code Asianpod10 at her site. Thanks for chatting with us Cindy! Toronto's Cindy Li, AKA Ciel, has a knack for balancing warmth and pressure. Her productions and mixes often feel coated in an iridescent gloss, evoking the trippy stylings of '90s UK tech house and the swung drums of classic New York house. In between that, though, there's lots of vigor via sleek electro, rippling trance, barrelling techno and big, bad breakbeats. Her style may lean towards the atmospheric but it's loaded with moxie, giving her the versatility to close out a main room or kick off the afters. Her fluid movements between bouncy basslines, spiraling synth patterns and weightless house grooves are just one facet of her impressive rise as a DJ and producer. When she's not behind the decks, presenting radio shows or working on the excellent Parallel Minds label she runs alongside other Toronto acts Yohei S and Daniel 58, Li throws herself into community work. Committed to diverse dance floors, affordable housing and overall equality in the music industry, she's a hard worker in the realest sense of the phrase. Li's RA mix is a treat. Rolling through scintillating drum work, wonky rhythms and dreamy pads, it feels like quintessential Ciel. In her interview below, she described how she enjoys "the challenge of trying to combine and make cohesive all the diverse styles of music I loved in a DJ set." Judging by this mix alone, it's safe to say that Li succeeded. Read more: http://ra.co/podcast/832 @ciel_dj

Episode 2 of Base Camp Beta, in partnership with ABSOLUT Vodka, Boiler Room, and Saudi Aramco. We’re thrilled to have our very first guest, Cindy Li aka @cl_lit, on to talk about the spread of corporate influence in nominally “underground” music scenes, the need to #synergize with your fellow #brands, and get in touch with our inner Instagram influencer. We also dig in to Dat Oven’s “Jet Set” - a 1998 NY house record recreating all of the worst club conversations you’ve tried to get out of, and finally take down the trash heap that is Boiler Room’s pay-to-play bullshit. Asia is currently in the midst of a fintech revolution, with new technologies and startups that could disrupt various financial services in economies across the region. In this episode of Pacific Exchanges, CAU analyst Cindy Li sat down with Nicholas Borst and Sean Creehan to discuss their recent paper on fintech developments in Asia. Some of the key takeaways from the conversation include: The payments and lending sectors are facing the highest levels of fintech-driven disruption. China has emerged as a leader within the region on both mobile payments and peer-to-peer lending. Both Asian banks and regulators are actively experimenting with virtual currencies and blockchain. Fintech innovations have the potential to improve access to credit for Asian SMEs and reduce remittance costs. A number of Asian economies have established regulatory sandboxes to allow banks and startups to experiment with new technologies. The views expressed are not necessarily those of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco or of the Federal Reserve System.
Shadow banking has grown quickly in China, driven by regulatory arbitrage and the growing role of non-bank financial institutions in the financial sector. In this episode of Pacific Exchanges, we sat down with our colleague Cindy Li to discuss her recent paper on shadow banking in China. Some of the key takeaways from our conversation with Cindy include: Shadow banking in China differs significantly from shadow banking in the U.S. and other advanced economies. Chinese shadow banking has evolved significantly in recent years in response to actions by financial regulators. Differentiating between financial innovation and shadow banking is often difficult. Wealth management products are a popular investment for individual investors in China, but they come with significant potential risks. Shadow banking in China is set to continue growing in size and complexity. The views expressed are not necessarily those of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco or of the Federal Reserve System.
