Saurav started a Groupon-like offering for SMBs in 2011. He quickly learned it wasn't going to work. He and his team pivoted and started driving leads to suppliers using Facebook ads. It worked and they generated revenue—but they were becoming a digital advertising agency. It wasn't at all what they wanted to build. So they pivoted again. They used the cash from that business and built Perkbox. The idea was a subscription-based offering that that gave perks to SMB customers. Telcos started buying it and attaching it to their products to drive sales. Then, they pivoted again, this time moving away from customer perks and to employee perks. This time, it worked. They grew from $2M in ARR to $14M in just 2 years. They kept growing and hit $36M in ARR. Then he sold the business to PE for $170M.It took longer than expected. There were more pivots than expected. But it was a huge success. Here's how it happened. Why you should listen:How to use new social media channels to drive growth. How to leverage partnerships to get end user adoption. Why having a profitable agency can be a great way to get started. Why capital efficiency can be a huge edge.Rebranding can help clarify market positioning. What it feels like to make $10s of millions in one day.KeywordsPerkBox, Groupon, startup journey, business model, SMB market, marketing strategies, recurring revenue, partnerships, entrepreneurship, exit strategy, venture capital, entrepreneurship, startups, employee benefits, social media marketing, capital efficiency, business growth, acquisition, rebranding, emotional marketing, lessons learnedTimestamps(00:00:00) Intro(00:01:48) The origin of Perkbox(00:04:52) Going after SMBs(00:12:16) The Pivot(00:26:35) Creating Viral Ads(00:32:28) Demo to Close Rate(00:40:12) Selling to PE Firms(00:49:38) A Piece of AdviceSend me a message to let me know what you think!

AfP was proud to partner with the Porticus Foundation to implement the program “Enabling Effective Dialogue: Developing Understanding and Effectiveness Measures." The goal of the initiative was to gather and assess the evidence about the effectiveness of interreligious dialogue (IRD) as a peacebuilding approach, and contribute to a strong culture of monitoring, evaluation, and learning across the IRD sector. A key part of this activity was establishing a peer learning community of global south IRD implementers, academia, and diverse NGOs who exchanged insights and best practices in assessing IRD. Longtime AfP collaborator Saurav Upadhyay was deeply involved in this project from inception. Join AfP's Michele Piercey in a conversation with Saurav, where he talks about some of the most striking lessons learned from this project, and what he sees as the most promising avenues for further research. This week on The Business of Open Source I spoke with Saurav Pathak, chief product officier at Bagisto, about a very different kind of business relationship with open source — and open source software incubated in a larger company. There were tons of interesting nuggets in this episode, but some things I wanted to call out are:For open source projects, the tech stack that the project is built with can in fact be a differentiating feature. This is unique to open source (and has come up before, both in my consulting work and in podcast interviews). Users might want to choose a project because it's written in the language they are familiar with, even if the functionality is exactly the same as a competing projectThe difference in needs between the merchants (who just want to get their ecommerce store up and running) and developers building ecommerce platforms, who was worried about being able to build extensions How an open source company like Bagisto fits into the larger commercial strategy for the parent company. Build a community of developers versus building a community of merchants, and why both are important for a project like BagistoHow Saurav manages the tension between adding features that people want and not building an overly bloated product, including how to manage this tension when someone wants to contribute a feature that the core team may or may not want. It's always interesting to me to see different models for open source companies, and Bagisto certainly is a different model. Especially after last week's episode with Tanmai Gopal, which had a much more classic story.
Saurav is a writer and filmmaker primarily known for his work on the crime-noir graphic novel Mumbai Confidential and his collaboration with Deepak Chopra for the comic book series Deepak Chopra Presents India Authentic. He is also the author of the essay “Echoes Of Eternity” for the Graven Images anthology that examined Hindu reincarnation motifs in American Superhero comics, especially in the work of Grant Morisson's “Animal Man” and Alan Moore's “Supreme.” In this episode, Saurav and I discuss the intriguing intersection of religion and comic books as we compare aspects of Hinduism and Christianity. We explored how themes like sacrifice, morality, and resilience in superhero narratives resonate with theological concepts from these two traditions, revealing the universal aspects underlying both religions. Whether examining parallels with ancient religious art or the modern dilemmas of comic characters, we navigated the rich landscape where theology and comics converge.

This week, host Tanishka Sodhi is joined by Newslaundry's Shwet Pandey and independent journalist Saurav Das. Saurav this week reported on how the government “blocks” requests for information and how a case filed by satirist Tanul Thakur might change this. “If the judgement is in favour of Tanul Thakur, then it could change censorship practices in India,” he says.Shwet, who wrote on the three-year anniversary of Sushant Singh Rajput's death, explains the media frenzy surrounding the case. The assembly election was held in Rajput's home state of Bihar soon after his death, and Shwet says, “Five percent of the political vote bank is the Rajput community. So it was a very effective ploy to politicise his death for their own agenda.”The panel discusses nepotism, mental health awareness, self-censorship among journalists, and a lot more. With a track record of founding startups at a young age, and executing entrepreneurial roles in global non-profits, Saurav Roy was selected as one of the youngest Global Shapers by the World Economic Forum at Bangalore in 2017. Since then, he has studied for a Masters in Regenerative Economics at Schumacher Collage, and is now working for the Carbon Tracker Initiative, a London-based, independent financial think tank that strives to influence the nature of global finance, away from stranded fossil fuel assets. It has cemented the terms 'Carbon bubble', 'stranded assets' and 'unburnable carbon' into the financial lexicon. Saurav's Master's thesis focused on the 'just transition' elements of the Green New Deal with the realisation that 'everything would change and everything would stay the same' in terms of the balance between the global north's endless consumption at the expense of human dignity, ecosystem annihilation and cultural balance in the global south. He examined the lack of supply chain justice in the existing concepts, evolved radical, inspiring ideas of how a global token system might fund non-debt-based climate reparations, and created the idea of a 'Carbon Truth and Reconciliation Commission' - because not all climate devastation can be healed simply by throwing money at it. In this inspiring, thought-provoking episode, we explore these ideas in depth, evolving ideas and questions for COP27 and learn Saurav's three core concepts for healing our times. Often, the young kids don't get the same opportunities and exposure due to limited resources. What if you could setup Hacker House where you bring talented folks, teach them necessary skills and give them a platform to participate in Gig/Creator economy. This could be applied to Gaming, Content, Coding and various other skills. The way to make money would be take a certain share of the earnings they make once they are trained (Income Share Agreements) and ready to monetize their skills. The Soul Gaming Clan has done this with a Gaming house. Check it out. Airbnb for Digital Nomads: The Pandemic has resulted in the rise of Digital Nomads, people who work remotely and travel. These people generally stay in one location for a few weeks/months and then move to another place. They have specific requirements in terms of Internet speeds, Cafes in walking distance, Gym etc. What if you build a curation service where you list out these places basis crowdsourcing this information from other digital nomads.Building Global Media Properties out of India: India has all the resources and Infrastructure to become a global media hub. We have the talent to create content, animators, and a large section of English speaking population that could be leveraged to build Global Media Properties. If American Media is about Glitzy Shit, what if India could be about Aspirational content that is relatable to other developing countries? Around uplifting sections of society, career progression, entrepreneurial ecosystems etc. Service to settle in a new city: Relocating to new cities is hard. It's hard to meet the right set of folks, understand how the city functions, and can be a difficult experience overall. What if you had a service where you could have an assigned person helping you settle into a new city. A website where you can choose the right person basis their profile and interests. This could be a way for Airbnb Hosts or Couch surfers to earn additional revenue while a great way for new people to settle in a new city.
