For students arriving in Saskatoon with very little knowledge of the English language, one of the first people they will meet in school is an English as an Additional Language teacher. These teachers not only guide students on their journey through the language, but as I discover in this episode, they provide a safe and nurturing space for students who have been through a lot in their young lives. You are going to meet two incredible EAL teachers in this episode of YXE Underground. Megan Chan and Laura Jorgenson share many qualities. They are passionate about teaching the English language in the Saskatoon Public School Division. They work hard to create a classroom where newcomer and refugee students feel secure and supported, and they both find their work as EAL teachers incredibly rewarding. Megan teaches elementary students at W.P. Bate School and Laura teaches high school EAL classes at Tommy Douglas Collegiate. Together, I believe they give you a clear picture of the challenges EAL teachers face as Saskatoon continues to become a more diverse community and school populations continue to rise, and why their jobs are so fulfilling. In this episode, I'm talking to Joanna Kolota. Joanna is the Curriculum Leader for Multilingual Learners at Trinity Academy Leeds, in the UK. She has written, spoken and worked to support multilingual students in primary, secondary and tertiary education and is now a published author after completing the brilliant Empowering EAL Learners in Secondary Schools. As someone who works in an international setting and with a student body who are by and large all multilingual learners, the book was a fantastic resource for me and I was really keen to chat with Joanna as a result. We discuss:1. Whether schools should always having a bespoke EAL dept and if so, how do they work with other subject domains to ensure that content and language is developing respectively2. The difference between simplification and easification in regard to multilingual learners 3. Whether it is helpful to think that much of good preparation for multilingual learners is simply good planning and intentional teaching in general4. What subtractive bilingualism is and how can schools guard against it5. And finally, does Joanna think a language or grammar concept also needs embedding in the humanities, arts and other departments' curriculumThanks again to Joanna for giving up her time to talk to me about her work and elements of the book that is a must read for anyone who has students of diverse linguistic backgrounds. If you want to be kept up to date on when educational chat like this happens, then be sure to subscribe to the podcast and/or follow me on Twitter @chrisjordanhkLinks: Joanna's book - Empowering EAL Learners in Secondary Schools.

One in five students are identified as speaking English as an Additional Language (EAL) and all teachers are highly likely to be teaching multilingual students in their classrooms. As our schools become more culturally and linguistically diverse, they must respond to the needs of the students in front of them, and this book provides a range of strategies and resources to ensure teaching is adaptive and responsive so that all learners thrive and fulfil their academic potential. At the heart of the book is developing an understanding of how languages are acquired and an awareness that all students, regardless of their current English language proficiency, need to be offered a challenging and supportive environment. Chapters offer: High-yielding, practical approaches and strategies to ensure that students are able to access content-appropriate lessons and simultaneously develop their language A plethora of resources and step-by-step examples, showcasing how explicit vocabulary and grammar learning can be context-based for the benefit of all learners Each teacher is positioned as a language teacher, with the responsibility of planning sessions where language is not perceived as an add-on, but as an integral and pivotal part. This book will empower you as an educator and ensure that your classroom is a language-aware and stimulating environment for your students. It will be essential reading for all secondary school educators and teaching assistants who support EAL students in mainstream lessons and are responsible for producing resources and implementing classroom strategies.

How do we be present to the space of transition for thte being we are walking and holding space for and also ourselves? We share a few stories of our horses and their journey to support where perhaps you are walking this path as well.

Today, I explore the vital role of English as an Additional Language (EAL) in international schools. I'll share three strategies that are key to supporting our multilingual students and promoting linguistic inclusion. Drawing from my experience in EAL, I offer practical tips from embracing an additive mindset to implementing scaffolding techniques and integrating language structures throughout the curriculum.Key InsightsCelebrating Linguistic Diversity: I discuss how multilingual students bring a wealth of diversity to our schools and why it's essential to shift from a deficit to an asset-based mindset. The Power of Scaffolding: I emphasise scaffolding learning to match students' cognitive levels, rather than simplifying content, allowing them to engage with complex ideas.Embedding Language Structures: I advocate for consistent language support in all subjects, highlighting how this can improve overall communication skills for every student.Strategies DiscussedShifting Mindsets: I reflect on the importance of viewing multilingualism as an enrichment rather than a challenge to overcome.Building Up, Not Watering Down: I talk about the necessity of providing students with the tools they need to grasp higher-level concepts, ensuring that all students can succeed.Language Across the Curriculum: I explore the benefits of reinforcing language structures in every lesson, aiding EAL students and their classmates alike.Thank you for tuning in, and as always, if you found this episode useful, please leave a review on your podcast platform. Colorful flags representing countries of the world decorated the ceilings and hallways of the WAB Elementary School this week. These flags were part of the “Celebration of Languages” week and a symbol of the linguistic and cultural diversity of our school. At WAB, we embrace and develop all languages spoken because we believe this fosters a greater sense of identity and belonging, in line with our strategic focus on I-DEAS (Inclusion through Diversity, Equity, Anti-Racism, and Social Justice). Preserving and developing multiple languages also prepares students for success in an interconnected world. Following on from our conversation with EAL teacher Helen Avetisyan about English as an Additional Language and multilingualism on the WAB Podcast last month(link to the article), we continue to explore how languages are celebrated and promoted at WAB in a new podcast episode – this time speaking with High School French Teacher Ludivine Kennedy and ES Chinese Teacher Hershey He. Listen as Ludivine and Hershey unpack the many pathways WAB offers to allow students to preserve their home languages, excel in academic English and explore other languages. They also discuss the concept of translanguaging as a learning tool to make the curriculum accessible to all. In the conversation you'll also hear how the many events, workshops and activities at WAB promote a culture where multilingualism is celebrated and integrated in everything we do. Listen to explore WAB's commitment to multilingualism and its importance.
Language is a powerful tool for inclusion. As an IB World School with a diverse student body, WAB is committed to championing multilingualism as a fundamental part of increasing intercultural understanding, international-mindedness and I-DEAS: Inclusion through Diversity, Equity, Anti-racism, and Social justice. In this WAB Podcast episode, we focus on English as an Additional Language (EAL), speaking to High School EAL Department Teacher Helen Avetisyan and Grade 10 student Sarah to understand the philosophy of EAL at WAB and how it is integrated into the curriculum. We also explore the role of agency in English language acquisition and how it creates a culture of inclusion, where each student's home culture, language, and identity is valued. Helen also unpacks the EAL Department's goal to achieve what is known as “additive bilingualism”, which ensures that English language learning doesn't happen at the expense of other languages. Make sure to tune in to this week's episode to learn more!
