Performing at an elite level isn't about doing special things. It's about focusing on the basics and the fundamentals; then executing them with precision. A coach's job is to harness the energy of the players and direct it towards a common goal. As we gear up for the first ever Stars and Stripes Classic, Fran Racioppi sat down with the Head Coach of the California Redwoods and Army Reservist Nat St. Laurent. Nat's primary mission is to take a group of elite alpha lacrosse athletes all capable of big things and get them to focus on the little details; a skill he learned teaching soldiers to throw hand grenades as an instructor. He shares his Army lessons learned and how they made him a better coach.Nat also provided his perspective on the growth of the Premier Lacrosse League, how regional affiliation has enhanced the fan base, and how everything the PLL does is all out; including the 2-point shot. Take a listen, watch, or read our conversation with one of the PLL's inaugural coaches, then head over to our YouTube channel or your favorite podcast platform to catch all the action from the Stars and Stripes Classic. Our flashes of anger often lead to actions and reactions that are far from what we want, and more importantly, what God wants for us and from us. Thankfully, there is another way! Coach Nat shares a Biblical workout designed to lengthen your fuse and strengthen your self-control. "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" That was the question of the Philippian jailer who witnessed the miraculous jailbreak of Paul and Silas. When I'm in the body I want, THEN I'll take better care of myself- I'll break away from macros, I'll stop forcing myself to eat and workout a certain way, and I'll start listneing to my body." That's the way most people relate to achieving the body they want: When everything is perfect, THEN I can relax and not try so hard. This way of thinking will NEVER work for women over 35. Which is why diets don't work. Tune into this episode to hear a different, more revolutionary approach to creating the body you want. "How different would your body look and feel if your body it had a faster metabolism because you committed to better self care? How different would your body look and feel if working out was something you genuinely looked forward to doingv everyday ? How different would your body look if you saw food as plentiful and something to enjoy instead of something to be afraid of and in fear of missing out if you don't have it now?" - Natalie Newhart Connect with Coach Nat! Are you a woman over 30 that works out a lot but doesn't see the results she's been hoping for? If so, you're not alone. In fact, this is the case with most of my clients when they first come to me. And one thing is for sure: working harder in the gym or being more controlling with your food will NOT help. In this episode, Natalie dives into why so many women struggle to see results from all their effort around exercise and food, and exactly what to do about it. "If you want to lose weight, you have to stop following diet plans and workout plans. You have to take a completely new approach from what you've done in the past. Working harder will not work." - Natalie Newhart Connect with Coach Nat! Instagram: @natalie.newhart Complimentary Coaching Call: calendly.com/natalienewhart/workwithme Website: natalienewhart.health
Do you find yourself reaching for food when you're stressed? Or bored? Do you keep thinking that the food is the issue? Do you keep thinking you just need to not eat until 12pm? Or not bring certain foods into the house if you want to lose weight? As a result of restricting food, do you keep finding yourself in a perpetual cycle of depriving and overindulging? Well, here's the thing... FOOD IS NOT THE ISSUE. In this episode, Natalie breaks down what the real problem is and how to fix it. If stress eating, boredom eating, mindless eating has been a struggle for you, you're gonna want to tune into this one. "So every time we feel a litlte be anxious or low, our body's like "oh, we remember that chocolate makes us feel good! Remember the chocolate!" So we get the chocolate and it soothes us right away, but only for a short period of time." - Natalie Newhart Connect with Coach Nat! Do you feel the need to constantly go-go-go? Always doing things 24/7? If so, there's a reason for this. And it's not because of your schedule, or your kids or your responsibilities. In this episode, Natalie shares some key concepts that will allow you to be productive AND enjoy life more, and not feel the need to constantly be efforting your way through your day. "So sometimes there's some shame around being joyful or playful or relaxing. There's some shame around being seen as enjoying yourself. It's like the shame of allowing yourself pleasure, the shame of allowing yourself to be happy. And it's like seeing almost as a judgment of, "well, if I'm happy and that person sees me resting or sees me as happy, then that means that I am indulging or I'm being lazy or I'm not working hard enough." - Natalie Newhart Connect with Coach Nat! Ever wondered why it's so hard for you to stick to a plan longer than a couple weeks? You set a goal of the body you want. You get really excited about it. You say "this is gonna be the one". You start the plan, but when the passion and excitement wears off, you fall back into your daily food and exercise habits. You think you just don't have the discipline or the willpower, or the right plan, or mabe you think there's something wrong with your body... none of that is true. You have it all. Your body is perfect. Even the plan is perfect. The problem lies in the reason you're doing the plan. Most people are following a plan to lose weight. And that's the mistake. If the reason why you're working out and eating healthy is to lose weight or not gain weight, you've failed before you even started. Tune into this episode to finally get answers on why nothing works and exactly what to do about it. "If your goal is to lose weight or keep yourself from gaining weight, you've failed before you even started because you're driving from a place of fear and lack. Dieting won't work because you're constantly running away from your current body or gaining weight... youll be scared of food, scared to take a day off to rest, scared to not get a walk in... and all this fear will cause so much tension and resistance and stress inside you that number one, youre gonna feel shitty all the time and number 2, your body won't have the ABILITY to lose weight because of all the strses that's in the way." Do you trust yourself? Do you trust yourself enough to have chocolate in the house ? Do you trust yourself enough to rest when your body needs it ? Do you trust yourself enough to say no to things you don't want to do? A big topic that comes up when we talk about creating vitality in the body is learning how to trust ourselves again- how to trust our hunger, our cravings, and our need for rest. Most people don't trust their body to tell them what the right decision is around food, movement, and rest. Which is why people go to coaches, to tell them what to do. Learning from a coach or a plan can be good in the beginning to get guidance. But once you have this knowledge, then it's time to take off the training wheels and learn how to trust your own intuition, your own wisdom, your own body. Tune in to learn how Natalie has built her up her own trust within herself and how she teaches her clients to trust their bodies again. "When we finally give ourselves free reign, we go and eat everything. We need to all the chocolate, all the sweets, all the fun foods , and then we go 'I can't trust myself' but it's actually some energy imbalance going on that's causing this back swing of 'now I need to eat back that energy.'" - Natalie Newhart Connect with Coach Nat! Have you ever wondered why you lose control with food? Or why you have that day where you feel like you've been ran over by a truck? In this episode, Natalie shares why that happens and why being super disciplined with your food and training may not be as helpful as the dieting world makes it out to be. We try to control our food, our training, our daily schedule and forcing ourselves to stick to the plan. And it's this need to control that always leads us to swinging out of control, and then losing trust in ourselves. An important part to making fitness a lifestyle is learning how to free yourself from this need to control. Tune in to learn how Natalie teaches herself and her clients how to let go of control. "Forcing ourselves to follow the plan may make us feel safe, but is it really creating the life you want? Are you expeirencing food freedom? Are you experiencing life fully? Are you feeling full of life? Or are you becoming more obsessive, burnt out and overhelmed?" - Natalie Newhart Connect with Coach Nat! Instagram: @natalie.newhart Work with me: calendly.com/natalienewhart/workwithme Website: natalienewhart.health
It's so easy to get caught up in thinking that "when I have the body I want, THEN I'll be happy." But it doesn't work like that. You may experience short-term gratification when you achieve the body you want, but it's only a matter of time until you feel empty inside again. And the truth is, needing a particular body to feel happy is often the very thing that keeps women from achieving the body they're after because it creates attachment. Attachment to the body creates worry and fear of losing the body (obsessing over food, calories, step count, scale weight). Living in this constant worry and fear will create a body that doesn't burn fat well, will lead you to eat more, and make the gym feel like a chore. Attachment to a particular body will create a life of worry and fear instead of the peace and happiness that we're all after. There is a way to create both fitness and happiness though! Tune in to this episode to hear how. "So yes, we can strive for a vision of the body we want . But do not look expect it to create the absolute fulfillment. Because it will never satisfy." - Natalie Newhart Connect with Coach Nat! Instagram: @natalie.newhart Work with me: calendly.com/natalienewhart/workwithme Website: natalienewhart.health
The way to feel more passion for life or peace in your life is to feel it. Emotions can be trained just like muscles. The more we feel peace in our lives, the stronger it gets. So the way we train happiness is to feel it. In fact, happiness is our natural state. However, most people are not aware of how they are so quick to give up their happiness. They allow the smallest things to shake them and cause them to not feel great- from an email that comes in, or how their clothes fit, or if somebody walks on their floor with dirty shoes. In this episode, Natalie shares practical approach on how to train happiness so that you can feel great more of the time. "No matter how good life is, no matter no matter what body we have, now how much money we have, no matter how many people we have that love and care about us... all those things immediately don't matter when we're stuck in painful emotions of sadness, or fear, or anger. Like what matters is alleviating that pain." - Natalie Newhart Connect with Coach Nat! Instagram: @natalie.newhart Work with me: calendly.com/natalienewhart/workwithme Website: natalienewhart.health
Intuition is the key to being fit while having freedom in your life- freedom from all the diet rules and diet structures that so many women get stuck in. But so many women have lost their abilty to feel because they've been so conditioned by society to trust 'the plan' instead of themselves. This dependency on macros, meal plans, dieting apps, and diet coaches is the reason why women struggle to create the body and life they want - especially as they get older. In this episode, Natalie shares why intuition is so important when it comes to creating the body you want and how feeling good is the key to looking good. "Our attachement to diet rules and diet structures just ends up making us feel really, really shitty because we end up forcing ourselves to follow the plan instead of our feelings." - Natalie Newhart Connect with Coach Nat! Instagram: @natalie.newhart Work with me: calendly.com/natalienewhart/workwithme Website: natalienewhart.health
Tune in with Coach Chris and Coach Nat as they discuss the importance of resistance training as you age and how strength training really is the "magic bullet" to age healthfully. They also discuss the differences between training for strength and training for metabolic conditioning and how we help you do both at SSP. At the end they answer your rapid-fire questions including how alcohol impacts fitness goals and what they've both been reading these days!
Have you ever thought about why you hate your body so much? Why it's so hard to love your body? And have you ever considered what impact those repetitive thoughts of self-hate and disgust are having on your body and your relationship with food? In this epsode, Natalie talks deeper on the where our body image patterns come from, why it's so hard to love yourself, and the energetic role that self-hate is playing on your physical appearance and your relationship with food. If you're hating your body, your body will respond to that hate. You will look worse, you will feel worse, and you will hate yourself more. Creating a fit and happy body is about learning how to put retrain the way you think and feel about your body by putting more love in. "So it's knowing that if I'm always thinking about how much I hate my legs, the cells actually start to change. They become stagnant. And you will get more cellulite." Connect with Coach Nat! In Part 2 of this episode, Natalie discusses the (hidden) secrets to why women are not losing weight despite eating well and working out. Expect a more practical training as she takes you through actual drills as if you're a client of her own. She refers to it as inner training. Inside, she'll help you become aware of your thoughts that are driving your undesirable behaviors around food, the gym, and self care. You'll see how these tapes that your mind is playing is what's keeping you from creating the body you want, the food habits you want, the gym habits you want, the self care habits you want, and the body you want. Tune in now so you can start to take your power back and create the habits you need to be fit and happy. Connect with Coach Nat! In this episode, Natalie gets real clear on how your body is a mirror of the thoughts that you're allowing your mind to think. Creating a fit body with peak health and vitality is an inner game, not an outer game like we're conditioned to believe. You hear it everywhere- our thoughts are power, our thoughts create. So why aren't you training your mind in a way that will create the body you want? Or the food habits you want? Or the gym habits you want? Have you ever considered why you do the things you do? Why is it so hard for you to eat without weighing and counting? Why is it so hard for you to motivate yourself to workout? Why is it so hard for you to rest? Natalie shares her insight and her experience as to how your thoughts are the real problem- not the food, your discipline, or your busy schedule. The men and women who serve in the military, for whatever country they might belong to, are an exceptional type of people. The very nature of the job means acknowledging there are people you'll likely never know who want you dead. That's pretty extreme, and yet there's an experience that is just as challenging when they finish their term of service. My guest today is Natalie Shand-Spellman. Coach Nat, as she likes to be called, is a retired United States Marine. She's here to talk about her time in the military, the lack of transition coming out of her service, feeling broken and left without identity, how she found her way through, and what civilians don't seen going on. She now helps veterans find their place in everyday society once the mission is over. Let's recognize our veterans. If you enjoyed the episode, please take a brief moment to rate the show five stars on iTunes, Spotify, or Audible.
