There's a difference between the elite and everyone else. Elite by definition means superior in terms of ability or qualities to the rest of a group or society. Elite is not good. It is not great. It certainly is not above average. To be elite means you're among the best. The Stars and Stripes Classic pitted America's two most elite Special Operations Forces against each other on the lacrosse field. To talk about what it means to be elite, not just in sports but in anything you do, Fran Racioppi sat down with Paul Rabil. Paul is the co-founder of the Premier Lacrosse League and undoubtedly one of the most elite lacrosse players to ever play the game. Paul is multiple time NCAA champion, a four year All American, he holds NCAA records for the most goals, assists and points. He is a multiple time Player of the Year and two time champion. He holds the most points in professional lacrosse. He is what every young lacrosse player ascribes to be. Paul is also an elite visionary and businessman. He developed the PLL out of the gaps he saw as a player. Now he's changing professional sports and how athletes are treated by owners. Check out our conversation from the endzone of Gillette Stadium to learn how anyone can be elite if you're ready to put in the work and relentlessly execute. (9:05) • The first thing you learn in a firefight – you can't hear anything. (25:42) • I'm on the ground in a prone position. A bullet went under my hand, through my sling, between my arm and my chest, and tore out the stock of my gun.  Stray bullet. (26:16) • What am I gonna do when the shit hits the fan? My body was so full of adrenaline. When 3 events happened – [I thought] “I can't get killed.” (31:15) • After I realized I can't get killed, I threw caution to the wind. (31:35) • I always heard the mortars - never heard this one. And it threw me back. I don't know what's going on. One piece of shrapnel peeled my scalp back. (33:20) • All the crazy things I did was to train me for this one night so I could save my men. (42:17) • My last minute in the Army typifies my entire Army career. The finance Corps Major sees me. Goes to his pay clerk and gives an order not to pay me until I get a haircut. (44:06) • One day, I get this box in the mail I open it up and it's a Silver Star. I didn't tell anybody. They didn't know what it was anyway. (46:57) • The doctors told me: “Son, we don't know if you're gonna be able to walk again or not. My exact words Wer “Fuck you, I'm walking out of your Goddamn hospital.” (48:49) • President [Bush] looked at me and said and said “Son, I know what it takes to get one of those [Silver Star]. I want to shake your hand.” (58:37) • My life driven by outside forces that I can't control. “Of all the strange breeds that mighta come along, it was their bad luck to get me.”In the years during and after World War II, the exploits of US Navy frogmen captured the American imagination. Seeking to showcase them on the silver screen, Hollywood producers worked closely with the Navy starting in 1950 to develop the film The Frogmen. The Navy provided extensive support, training actors using real frogmen drills and equipping them with state-of-the-art gear. Filming underwater presented huge challenges with the bulky cameras of the time. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our 1952 Academy Award Best Cinematography Black-and-White Nominees series with a conversation about Lloyd Bacon's 1951 film The Frogmen.Released in 1951, The Frogmen gave audiences an unprecedented look into the adventures of these elite naval commandos – the Underwater Demolitions Team, or UDT. A major part of our conversation was about the underwater filming used extensively throughout the movie. We were impressed by how they shot underwater action, since this was brand new and innovative in 1951. While the pacing seems slow now, those scenes must have been thrilling for audiences when it first came out. We speculated that the underwater cinematography is probably why it got the Oscar nomination. We also talked a lot about the dynamic between Richard Widmark as the new commander and Dana Andrews as the chief who questions his leadership. Their contentious relationship drives much of the conflict and drama as they gradually gain mutual respect. Some key scenes stand out that represent the film's strengths to us. Disarming the live torpedo ratchets up the tension and shows Widmark's courage. The rope transfer between ships demonstrates the Navy's technical input. Planting the prank sign highlights real rivalries between units. And even though the final underwater fight pushes the action beyond historical truth, it's clear that it's designed for drama and emphasizes what the UDT was actually doing when the film was released.Overall, we found The Frogmen to be enjoyable but not that memorable. The underwater footage remains the main appeal today, though perhaps military fans would be more inclined to revisit it. The film could use a restoration. But Widmark's performance and the naval insight still make it worth watching. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. NEW BOOK TELLS THE UNTOLD TRUE STORY OF THE WORLD WAR II FROGMEN WHO GAVE RISE TO THE NAVY SEALS With echoes of  Unbroken, the derring-do and bravado of The Right Stuff; and the battle-forged camaraderie of  Band of Brothers, Into Enemy Waters by award-winning journalist Andrew Dubbins (Aug. 23, 2022, Diversion Books) details the origins and heroic missions of World War II's elite unit of Navy frogmen, told through the eyes of one of its last living members, 95-year-old George Morgan. Morgan was just a wiry, 17-year-old lifeguard from New Jersey when he joined the Navy's new combat demolition unit, tasked to blow up enemy coastal defenses ahead of landings by Allied forces. His first assignment: Omaha Beach on D-Day  When he returned stateside, Morgan learned that his service was only beginning. Outfitted with swim trunks, a dive mask, and fins, he was sent to Hawaii and then deployed to the Pacific as a member of the pioneering Underwater Demolition Teams. GIs called them “half fish, half nuts.” Today, we call them Navy SEALs. Led by maverick Naval Reserve Officer Draper Kauffman, Morgan would spend the fierce final year of the war swimming up to enemy controlled beaches to gather intel and detonate underwater barriers. He'd have to master the sea, muster superhuman grit, and overcome the demons of Omaha Beach. Moving closer to Japan, the enemy's island defenses were growing more elaborate and its soldiers more fanatical. From the black sand beaches of Iwo Jima, to the shark infested reefs of Okinawa, to the cold seas of Tokyo Bay, teenaged George Morgan was there before most, fighting for his life. And for all of us. “Frogmen” was the nickname given to the members of the newly formed Underwater Demolition Teams (UDT) during World War II. Their fellow service members called them “Half Fish, Half Nuts”. They were the predecessors of today's Navy SEAL teams. George Morgan The history of the formation of these special units is the subject of a new book by award winning journalist & author Andrew Dubbins. It is called “Into Enemy Waters; a World War II Story of the Demolition Divers Who Became the Navy SEALs”. Much of the book is based upon the personal experiences of one of the last living original Frogmen George Morgan. Draper Kaufman is credited as the being the “father of the Navy SEALs”. Although the son of a Navy Admiral, Kaufman was denied a commission from the Naval Academy due to poor eyesight. He volunteered with the American Ambulance Corps in France prior to the US entering the war. He then volunteered with the Royal British Navy where he gained valuable experience defusing bombs during the London blitz. When Admiral Nimitz asked Draper why he wasn't in the US Navy, He replied that our Navy didn't want him because of his eyesight.  Nimitz resolved THAT issue immediately. The Frogmen of UDT would see action in some of the most famous battles of World War II including D-Day, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and even the waters of Tokyo Bay gathering intelligence for an invasion that never took place. Very often they would swim long distances to the enemy beaches armed with only a knife, their demolition tools and their bravery. Dubbins shares the creativity Kaufman and the original Frogmen used in developing techniques and tools, versions of which are still in use today.  Kaufman insisted on recruiting strong swimmers as he felt it was easier to train a man to use explosives than to swim. Upon reflection, George Morgan jokes that it was probably a mistake he told the recruiter he was a lifeguard.  George also shares firsthand accounts of the terror of war and bravery of his fellow UDT Frogmen. TAKEAWAY: It took a particular type of bravery for George Morgan to help Andrew on this project. It caused him to recall bad memories that he had been trying to forget for decades.

Sam hosts Matthew Cole, investigative reporter at The Intercept, to discuss his recent book Code Over Country: The Tragedy and Corruption of SEAL Team Six. Then, Sam is joined by Jack Crosbie, writer for Rolling Stone and Discourse Blog, to discuss the recent developments in Ukraine.  Matthew Cole begins tracing by SEAL Team Six's origins to the combat-swimmer units in WW2, known as “Frogmen,” known as the most elite soldiers in the navy, before the failure of the US Military in the 1979 hostage rescue in Tehran inspired President Carter's creation of a new counter-terrorism special ops unit, JSOC, with control over the Army's Delta Force and the newly created Navy SEAL Team Six. Next, Cole dives into the origins of the corruption in the unit, reaching back to their creation under Carter, and Commander Marcinko's lasting imprint on its culture, which he built to resemble a mafia, with himself as the Don at its center, pushing an outrageous lifestyle that included alcohol and drug abuse, fraud, and a code of silence when it came to the outside world – even the rest of the military. They then look to the wake of 9/11, as SEAL Team Six saw their first real extended warfare, beginning a twenty-year period in Afghanistan that saw unprecedented levels of violence for any individual unit. Cole and Sam parse through the little accountability that the unit faces, with their only superiors besides JSOC being the Pentagon and White House, so when things began to spin out of control, with war crimes and bodies piling up at the feel of SEAL Team Six, they were able to escape any incident with the leverage of their supposed “results.” Matthew Cole then explores Admiral Collin Green's public rebuke of an internal review of the team, calling out the cultural virus running rampant through the community, and bringing forward the clear and obvious need for an investigation into the history and facts of SEAL Team Six, with a genuine (even if non-criminal) system of accountability for the generations of brutality and corruption. Jack Crosbie then joins the show as he covers his return from Ukraine and what he has thought of coverage at home and abroad. They also touch on Jack's history, covering the conflict beginning in 2014, as he walks through the original violence and the eight years of constant war that followed, before he dives into this year's Russian invasion and the much higher levels of bloodshed, alongside the absurd horror of Putin's propaganda and what, if anything, could see us get closer to a ceasefire. Sam also covers the Texas courts' injunction on their abusive legislation targeting trans and queer children, the Texas Supreme Court's shutting down a final challenge on the Abortion ban, undermining that fight even further, and Rachel Maddow promoting a brand new Russian conspiracy, this time invoking the Holocaust (as a more positive example). And in the Fun Half: Sam discusses the role of satire in a society rife with ironic and unironic misinformation, Bill Maher claims his libertarian conservatism is actually the fault of trans people and anti-police activists for suddenly coming into existence five years ago, and Dave Rubin has Nikki Haley walk him through why the US's fear of leading with violence would lead the world into catastrophe, not something like nuclear war. Jordan Peterson relies on some low-budget misinformation to promote Ivermectin in the year 2022, only to be met with corrections by the first author of the experiment he supposedly cited. The Nine Circles Audio Thing
Vomit Fist's Nick and Leo Didkovsky on new album "Omnicide," the (un)importance of genre tags, Frogvasions, and much more!

After five long years Vomit Fist just released Omnicide and it seriously challenges the basis for genre tagging in the sense that they've taken the blackened grindcore from their debut, Forgive But Avenge, and molded it into a forward thinking art form. It's wild, reckless abandon one second and jazzy exploration the next but even that explanation is selling its many successes short. Then there's the fantastic lyrical narrative here that continues the story from the debut and the words themselves from vocalist Malcolm Hoyt which are, again, their own art form. To put it another way, there's so much to unpack with this album that a few sincere listens just won't cut it, it deserves some serious time and attention to truly capture everything the band has to offer. On the heels of Omnicide's release, guitarist Nick Didkovsky and drummer Leo Didkovsky took some time to chat with Josh about the album's development and how (un)important genre tags are in light of this new album. They also spend some time on Nick's label Punos Music, the fantastic album art from Paulo Girardi, how Josh initially discovered the band, a choice cut from their debut and its lasting impression, and a whole mess of other topics. This is their conversation -- jump in and take listen! Omnicide is available now on the band's Bandcamp page and on Punos Music. Welcome to Louisville, Kentucky! We are here to run a race that supports the Navy Seals Foundation and attend the  Bourbon and Beyond Festival! RUN  In this episode, we run the Joggin for Frogmen 5K to benefit the Navy Seals Foundation on Saturday.    It was at South Oldham High School in Crestwood, not too far outside Louisville.  The weather was awesome and the course was almost entirely on the high school campus.  It was mainly flat and it is an inexpensive race that everyone can run or walk and feel inspired knowing they are supporting a great cause.  We talk to the media manager for the event, Steve Watkins, who is also a former Navy Seal, and he tells us about the foundation and what it does for families of Navy Seals as well as Navy Seals themselves. EAT We got to the Bourbon and Beyond Festival on the first day with a plan to research and prepare to film our food segments on the second day of the festival.  We saw lots of local eats and we talked to several people at many booths.  We were exited.  I can tell you Island Noodles were tasty... we wish we had filmed some segments on Saturday. DRINK We tried many cocktails as part of the Jefferson's Reserve.VIP Lounge Area.  The Jefferson's Airplane was a great cocktail that was part of our VIP experience.  The Old Fashioned they made us was also awesome.  We wanted to bring you so many of the offerings from the local distilleries as well.    We should have filmed everything we tried that day because.... THE WEATHER HAD OTHER PLANS... It started raining like cats and dogs and we took shelter as we watched great musical acts like Keb Mo' Sheryl Crow, and Lenny Kravitz.   At the end of the night, we made our way to get picked up at the Uber / Lyft shared ride location.  It was ankle-deep mud because of the rain and it was difficult for many to exit the park.  The city declared the park unsafe and canceled day two. We understood.  Safety is always the top priority. We also knew we had to change course so we could bring you some of what Louisville has to offer should you come here to run a race or visit for an awesome vacation. We decided to go on a couple of distillery tours and to a couple of restaurants, so we will bring you those in future Quick Bites. Thank you for hanging in there with us, even though plans changed in the interest of safety for everyone.  THAT'S A WRAP Thank you for watching! Here's hoping for a great second year of the podcast because of all your support!  Please subscribe and rate us on iTunes.
