Wall St closed mixed on Wednesday following the release of the Federal Reserve's latest meeting minutes from earlier this month. The minutes outlined most Federal Reserve policymakers were in favour of slowing the pace of rate hikes in a bid to assess the economy's progress, however policymakers also agreed unanimously that ongoing increases in the nation's cash rate would be appropriate. This caused a mixed reaction across Wall St, and enhances fears of a global recession as the cost of living continues to rise. The Dow Jones ended the midweek session down 0.26% and the S&P500 lost 0.16%, but the Nasdaq rose 0.13%.Earlier on Wednesday, European stocks closed lower again on Thursday as investors awaited the release of the US Fed's meeting minutes to gauge insight into whether the Fed will remain hawkish on its stance to tackle inflation. Investors in the region also sold out of markets across Europe also on the back of downbeat earnings reports including British bank Lloyds reporting flat profit growth on the prior year. The STOXX600 fell 0.3%, Germany's DAX closed flat, the French CAC fell 0.13% and, in the UK, the FTSE100 shed 0.59%.Taking a look at commodities, iron ore is again the only key commodity trading higher this morning, up 2.31% at US$133/tonne, while oil is down 3.4% at US$73.76/barrel and gold is down almost half a percent at US$1825/ounce.What to watch today:Ahead of the local trading session, the SPI futures are anticipating the ASX to open 0.3% lower, extending on yesterday's losses and on the back of the continued global sell-off overnight.Australian wages and construction data out yesterday add further support for the RBA to continue its steady rate hike path as opposed to considering any 50-bps hikes in future. Wages growth in Q4 showed growth of just 0.8% for the quarter, which was lower than expectations of 1%, while construction work done in the fourth quarter fell by 0.4% which was well below consensus expectations of a 1.5% increase.Stocks trading ex-dividend today include Codan (ASX:CDA), Whitehaven Coal (ASX:WHC), IRESS (ASX:IRE) and JB Hi-Fi Group (ASX:JBH). If you've been thinking about these stocks, it might be worth considering buying in today as stocks trading ex-dividend generally trade lower on the ex-dividend date.Trading Ideas: Bell Potter has downgraded its price target on Clean Seas Seafood (ASX:CSS) from $0.85 to $0.75 cents per share, but maintain a speculative buy rating on the company following the release of the company's first half results which were weaker than expected including revenue down 22% YoY and higher feed costs, up 20% YoY. Production costs are also likely to run above previous targets for the near term however for the most part are mitigated by higher average selling prices.Trading Central has identified a bullish signal on Xtek (ASX:XTE) following the formation of a pattern over a period of 21-days which is roughly the same amount of time the share price may rise from 73 cents to the range of 83 cents to 85 cents according to standard principles of technical analysis.

Without a Wall Street lead and ahead of an RBA meeting, the ASX200's early gains were fleeting, with the index grinding lower throughout the session to finish down 0.38% and at 6826.The sell-off gathered pace after the RBA handed down its decision; a 50 point hike as expected, and a tacit commitment to data dependency, with policy “not on a pre-set path”. The AUD/USD reclaimed an intra-day dip following the meeting.Across the market: IT and energy stocks lifted, the latter supported by moves from Russia to cut gas supply into Europe and a decision by OPEC+ to reduce output. New-energy stocks outperformed. Pilbara Minerals finished the session 6.9% higher, Allkem added 4.3%, while Paladin gained 7.2%. The lithium miners were bolstered by a bullish broker note from Jefferies. As far as the laggards go, Super Retail dropped 6% as the stock went ex-dividend. A rare down day for the local market, at least in recent times. The S&P/ASX 200 slipped 0.21%, closing trade at 7112.8. The performance mirrored that of Wall Street and most of the Asian region. Blackmores needed an urgent dose of vitamin C, tumbling 10.4% following the release of its full-year results. Codan, Evolution Mining, Origin Energy and ASX also suffered earnings-related prangs, slumping between 4% to 10.1%. There were some big winners, however. IPH Limited soared 15.5% after its full-year results, taking out top gong for the session. It was closely followed by NRW Holdings, Treasury Wine Estates and IRESS which rose 5.8%, 4.1% and 2.2% respectively. On the macro level, there was little reaction to a mixed Australia's jobs report, reflecting that the underlying backdrop remain much the same: conditions are tight and wage pressures are building. The market is fully priced for a 40-pointer from the RBA in September. The local market closed with little change yesterday, amid reviving fears about China's economic growth now that there are rising COVID-19 cases in Beijing. Locally, materials and technology shares advanced the most, while utilities, financials and consumer staples declined. On the ASX200 leaderboard, Codan (ASX:CDA) was the best performer after releasing its FY22 guidance. The company expects to match its first-half profit in the second half. If this is achieved, Codan will hit a record full-year profit of $100 million, which would be an 56% increase year-on-year. Meanwhile Polynovo (ASX:PNV), NOVONIX (ASX:NVX) and Incitec Pivot (ASX:IPL) dropped the most. The most traded stocks by Bell Direct clients yesterday were Lake Resources (ASX:LKE), APA Group (ASX:APA), BHP Group (ASX:BHP) and CSL Limited (ASX:CSL). In New York there was a bank-led rally saw the Dow Jones rebound more than 600 points, closing 1.98% higher, following a week of sharp losses. The S&P500 closed with a gain of 1.86% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq gained 1.59%. What to watch today:  Following US equities, the Australia share market is set to rise 0.27% at the open this morning. In commodities, the price of oil is trading lower as worries of a recession offset expectations of higher fuel demand over in the US. Gasoline demand in the US has remained at record levels, ahead of Memorial Day weekend, the peak driving season in the US. The price of gold reached its highest in two weeks, lifted by a weaker US dollar. Meanwhile, iron ore prices have risen higher. Today watch Technology One (ASX:TNE), which is set to report its earnings results today. Viva Energy Group (ASX:VEA) will hold its AGM today. Amcor (ASX:AMC) and GQG Partners (ASX:QGQ) are set to go ex-dividend today. Trading Ideas:Bell Potter have upgraded their recommendation on AFT Pharmaceuticals (ASX:AFP) from a Hold to a Buy, after the company reports its FY23 result yesterday. The price target has remained unchanged at $4.80 and AFP's currently share price is $3.20, which implies 50% share price growth in a year. Trading Central have identified a bearish signal in PM Capital Opportunities Fund (ASX:PGF), indicating at the stock price may fall from the close of $1.58 to the range of $1.44 to $1.46 over 11 days, according to the standard principles of technical analysis.

The local marketed moved with less conviction than Aussie voters over the weekend; while chewing over the Federal election outcome the S&P/ASX 200 closed up a measly 0.05% to 7148.9. Materials once again supported the broader market - adding 0.8%. Codan was the stock specific winner, ending the day up 14.5% after flagging its second half profits should match its record $50 million first half success. Imugene managed to escape its recent rut after telling investors its in a strong position to round out the financial year; it finished up 12.5%. Elders galloped ahead another 8.9% thanks to a 30-40% boost to its guidance and $0.28 per share dividend. On the other side of the ballot, Polynono and Novonix shed 7.5% and 4.3% respectively. The price action reflected a slow start to the week on the data front and concern about China and COVID, but then again markets may just be warming up before the FOMC meeting minutes on Wednesday. Yesterday the ASX was closed for the Australia Day Public Holiday. On Tuesday however, Australian shares tumbled and the ASX200 closed 2.5% or 177.9 points lower. This was the second biggest sell-off this year, with an inflationary shock as CPI came in ahead of consensus and fears about higher interest rates, as well as the invasion of Ukraine. All sectors were in the red, with energy declining the most. The best performer was Codan (ASX:CDA), a manufacturer and supplier communications equipment. Its share price advanced 16.9% after reporting a record first-half result. Revenue increased 32% and net profit increased 21%. Meanwhile, miners Liontown Resources (ASX:LTR) and Chalice Mining (ASX:CHN) were the worst performers on Tuesday. The most traded stocks by Bell Direct clients on Tuesday included major banks National Australia Bank (ASX:NAB), Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ASX:ANZ) and Westpac (ASX:WBC). Followed by CSL and Telstra (ASX:TLS). European stocks closed higher as investors waited for the latest monetary policy announcement from the US Federal Reserve. However, US equities fell in a volatile session after the Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said there is “quite a bit of room” to raise interest rates before it would harm the economy. Traders took the comments to mean the central bank may be aggressive in tightening policy, and the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield climbed over 1.8%. The Fed has now signalled that it could start raising interest rates in March. The central bank said in a statement that “with inflation well above 2% and a strong labor market, the Committee expects it will soon be appropriate to raise the target range for the federal funds rate.” Following Wall Street, the SPI futures are suggesting the local market will fall 0.3% at the open. What to watch today:The oil price extended gains, trading above US$87 a barrel on Wednesday, the highest since October 2014. Investors remain concerned about supply and the possibility of energy disruptions if Russia is to invade Ukraine. The price of gold has tumbled, trading below US$1,820 an ounce, amid a stronger dollar after Powell's comments. The seaborne iron ore price is trading above US$129 a tonne. In economic data, on Tuesday Australia's consumer price index for the December quarter surged 3.5% year-on-year, ahead of consensus and the RBA's own forecasts. And today, import and export prices will be released at 10:30am AEDT. Trading Ideas:Bell Potter maintain their BUY rating on Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ASX:ANZ), and have increased their price target from $30 to $31. ANZ last closed at $26.77, implying 11.6% share price growth in a year. Trading Central have identified a bullish charting signal in COG Financial Services (ASX:COG), indicating that the price may rise from the close of $1.45 to the range of $1.73 to $1.79. The pattern formed over 147 days which is roughly the period of time in which the target price range may be achieved, according to standard principles of technical analysis.

No sugarcoating today; it was blood in the streets, falling knives hitting the pavement, baby out with the bathwater, choose your poison. The S&P/ASX200 posted its most significant two-day per cent decline since June 2020. Plenty of corporate news dropped early, but even good news was swamped in the negative sentiment. The sell-off gathered momentum after the shock inflation print, with core inflatoin at an eight-year high of 2.7% and rate hikes brought forward by even the dovish of doves. Takeover talk was confirmed by Zip and Sezzle, although only Sezzle closed higher +8%. Codan's ripped higher +16% after flagging it will post a record first half result. Thinning trade ahead of tomorrow's holiday likely didn't help, and more wine is needed for Australia Day, that's for sure.

What use is an F-call?

What use is an F-call? As you might know or recall, I don't have HF at my QTH. So far my DX activities have been using other people's equipment and using my 12m squid-pole when I'm either camping or set-up at some waterside location. This seriously curtails my activities and I'm keen to do something about it. Over the past few weeks I've been looking at different options, it's a process that everyone goes through, and sometimes you come out of it having gained some experience. I'm not shy in asking questions, but the replies are sometimes a little more difficult. I've heard the "try it and see" reply many times, and while that's fine if you have a money tree in the back yard, that's not really going to work for me. I've also been advised to home-brew a solution. While I'm all for that, I've built a few minor things; if I add up the money I've spent on home-brewing antennas, I'm not doing so well. It's $5 here, $2.50 there, a roll of wire, a pole or two, sockets, plugs, rope, you name it, it's in my shack. I reckon I've spent more than enough money for the moment on building things that don't quite work as advertised. Of course I'll be the first to admit that I've learnt heaps from doing it, but at the moment, all I really want is to get on air and make some contacts. I hit on the idea of getting a heavy-duty boot-lip mount and using the same mount for HF and VHF/UHF. I realise that I won't be able to use the same antenna, or that any antenna that claims to work all bands is likely to be pretty inefficient, so I'm getting geared up for having several mono-band whips and exchange them as I need to. I'm not expecting to operate while I'm on the move, but I would like to be able to turn my engine on and drive away once I've had enough. My squid-pole prevents that, since packing up a 12m fibreglass pole with ground wires is not a trivial affair. I looked at screw-driver antennas, contraptions that physically move bits around to tune the antenna. The only one that everyone agrees works is a hulking big Codan antenna. If I have a truck or a 4WD, that would work great, but my little Holden Cruze is not suited to such a monster. The Yaesu ATAS120 antennas seem to be pretty fragile and I'm guessing the dust on a dirt road would seriously affect it. I saw several others, but so far none of these stick out. I'm leaning towards a 10, a 15, a 40 and an 80m whip, four in all, centre loaded, 2.2m long each. I don't yet know how they pack away, if I have to re-tune them every time I put them together, or even if they are built to be dismantled. They're made by Diamond, but the jury is still out on whether this is an actual usable, useful solution. The journey continues. What experience do you have in your adventures? I'm Onno VK6FLAB
