Wall Street reversed Monday's rally to trade lower on Tuesday after credit rating agency Moody's downgraded the credit rating on several banks including M&T Bank and Pinnacle Financial citing deposit risk as the reason for the downgrades. Moody's also placed Bank of NY Mellon and State Street on review for a downgrade. This caused investor fears of a further banking crisis to resurface thus sparking the sell-off on Tuesday. The Dow Jones fell 0.45% on Tuesday, while the S&P500 lost 0.42% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq declined 0.79%.And in the European region markets closed lower on Tuesday as investors await the release of significant inflation data out later this week alongside reactions to a shock banking tax announcement out of Italy in the form of a 40% windfall tax on banking profits which dragged down the banking sector on Tuesday. Banks led the losses in the region overnight while healthcare stocks bucked the trend to add 3.2%. The STOXX600 ended down 0.2% on Tuesday, Germany's DAX fell 1.1%, the French CAC shed 0.69% and, in the UK, the FTSE100 fell 0.36%.The local market rose just 0.03% on Tuesday as a selloff in consumer staples stocks was offset by strong gains in the healthcare sector, a sector which has been sharply beaten down this year.We are preparing for the ramp up of earnings season this week which investors have already been particularly responsive to with companies that have reported, both good and bad results, experiencing double digit share price movement on the day of results being released. The US reporting season has proven to be stronger than expected, so we could see a similar outcome of results here in Australia.James Hardie Industries released first quarter results yesterday that sent the company's share price soaring 15%. The leading global supplier of fiber cement building products reported record global adjusted EBITDA of US$279.1m, with an adjusted EBITDA margin of 29.2%, net income up 13% and operating cash flow increased 64%.JHX also provided outlook, which is a big tick for investors, but only for the second quarter of FY24, with the company expecting adjusted net income between US$170-$190m, North American, its biggest market, is expected to produce volumes to be in the range of 740-770 million and CAPEX of US$550m. What to watch today:Ahead of the local trading session here in Australia the SPI futures are expecting the ASX to open the midweek session down 0.07%.On the commodities front this morning, oil is trading 1.05% higher at US$82.8/barrel, gold is down 0.53% at US$1926/ounce and iron ore is down 2.35% at US$104/tonne amid declining demand and robust inventories of the commodity.AU$1.00 is buying US$0.65, 93.73 Japanese Yen, 51.19 British Pence and NZ$1.08.Trading Ideas:Bell Potter has reduced the price target on Smartpay (ASX:SMP) from $2.10 to $1.97 and maintain a buy rating on the payment solutions provider on the back of competitor Block releasing a quarterly update shining light on the payment space. Bell Potter has adjusted forecasts across FY24-FY26 on the grounds of material reductions to the company's Australian transaction segment revenues on the assumption of slowing Average Revenue Per Unit reflecting an overall slowdown in consumer spending, and softer EBITDA is expected for FY24 before Bell Potter's assumed margin expansion kicks in. Bell Potter remain positive on Smartpay however have slightly reduced the price target on these grounds. And Trading Central has identified a bullish signal on Pilbara Minerals (ASX:PLS) following the formation of a pattern over a period of 57-days which is roughly the same amount of time the share price may rise from the close of $5.32 to the range of $5.95 to $6.10 according to standard principles of technical analysis.

US equities hit a 15-month high on Wednesday after CPI data came in lower than expected, which boosted investor sentiment. The annual inflation rate in the US slowed to 3% in June, the lowest level since March 2021, down from 4% in May and also below the consensus expectation of 3.1% in a sign the Federal Reserve's hawkish stance on hiking rates is having a significant impact on cooling inflation. The Dow Jones rose 0.25% on Wednesday, the S&P500 added 0.74%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq did most of the heavy lifting with the index rising 1.15% at the closing bell.Despite inflation falling, the market is still expecting the Fed to announce another 25-basis point rate hike at the next FOMC meeting as wages inflation, services inflation and housing inflation, despite moderating, are still stubbornly high.Over in Europe, markets in the region also had a strong rally on Wednesday as investor sentiment was boosted by inflation cooling in the US. The STOXX600 rose 1.5%, Germany's DAX added 1.47%, the French CAC rose 1.57%, and in the UK, the FTSE100 surged 1.83%.What to watch today:Ahead of the local trading session the SPI futures are anticipating the ASX to open Thursday's session up 0.87% following the inflation-data driven rally in the US overnight.Locally yesterday, the ASX lifted 0.38% buoyed by a near 2% rise for the energy sector as oil is trading 1.36% higher and up 5.65% over the last week following speculation that China may move to introduce further policy to stimulate its economy through the sluggish post-pandemic recovery.Gold miners also extended their recent rally into the midweek session on strength in the price of the commodity while the worst performing sectors yesterday were information technology and health care.On the commodities front this morning, oil is trading 1.34% higher at US$75.83/barrel, gold is up 1.32% at US$1957.57/ounce and iron ore is up 1.39% at US$109.50/tonne.AU$1.00 is buying US$0.68 cents, 93.96 Japanese Yen, 51.97 British Pence and NZ1.08.Trading Ideas:Bell Potter has initiated coverage of Smartpay Holdings (ASX:SMP) with a buy rating and a 12-month price target of $2.16/share amid terminal growth outlook from Bell Potter's analyst. Smartpay is a full-service provider of end-to-end payment solutions and the Bell Potter analyst sees SMP has considerable uplift to gross profit and margins from implies revenue per unit as the company expands its Australian customer base. And Trading Central has identified a bearish signal on NIB Holdings (ASX:NHF) following the formation of a pattern over a period of 11-days which is roughly the same amount of time the share price may fall from the close of $8.43 to $7.80 to $7.90 according to standard principles of technical analysis.

A grăbit fintech transformarea digitală a bankingului?

Eric Rosenblum is a Managing Partner at Tsingyuan Ventures, an early stage US fund with over $100m under management. They believe in the opportunity of cross-border and cross-discipline investments and focus primarily on US-based science startups founded by the Chinese tech diaspora. Prior to co-founding Tsingyuan Ventures, Eric graduated from Harvard, worked at BCG then got an MBA at MIT and worked as a management consultant and serial entrepreneur in China for 14 years. Eric was one of the rare foreign co-founders of multiple tech startups during China’s early Internet wave, and his ventures led to 2 exits (M&As for ChinaNOW and SmartPay). Coming back to the states, he then worked at Google and Palantir before co-founding Tsingyuan Ventures with former members of the TEEC Angel Fund. TEEC started as a network of Tsinghua University alumni (Tsinghua Entrepreneur & Executive Club  (Tsinghua is like the MIT + Harvard of China) and wrote the first checks in 5 unicorns: Ginkgo Bioworks, Carta, Quanergy, Plus.ai, Zoom, and about 160 tech startups. While it is a US fund, the Tsingyuan name reflects its focus and strategy by combining part of the Tsinghua (清) name and ‘source/origin’ (源). Some context This episode is particularly timely following the recent ‘Proclamation on the Suspension of Entry as Nonimmigrants of Certain Students and Researchers from the People’s Republic of China’ by the White House. According to the Department of Homeland Security, in the 2018–19 academic year, there were enrolled at U.S. universities: 272,470 undergraduate and graduate students from China. 84,480 were in a graduate-level STEM program. These restrictions are focused on students coming from mainland universities associated with the army, but might impact the ‘intellectual balance of trade’ that had been so favorable to the US so far. Episode Overview In this episode, we discuss: The early days of China’s tech scene and the waves of Chinese PhDs in the US, to highlight the upcoming surge in opportunities, particularly with the many applications of AI at scale. The intellectual balance of trade, and the value of this asset for the US. The role of non-state actors like Google, Baidu or Alibaba as talent factories. The 10-year lag between the moment a foreign student comes for a few years and starts a company, and why he believes we’re still just seeing the upswing of the wave. China’s advances with regulation, local support and public acceptance of technology for the new wave of data-driven startups. Analogies with basketball and pingpong to compare the impact and legacy of drafting outstanding talent into a system, and the risks of making the talent trade balance less favorable to America. How cross-border talent will be key to create more truly global champions from the US. References Mentioned Eric mentions successful companies founded by the Chinese diaspora (including Guitar Hero, Nvidia, Zoom, etc.) More here. In addition to cross-border, Eric makes the case for cross-disciplinary investments here. Last, here are Eric's all-time favorites, that also happen to be very timely: Taylor Branch’s series on MLK Jr. Starting with “Parting the Waters”. Robert Caro’s series on Lyndon Johnson. Starting with “The Path to Power”. (his most recent read): The Fire is Upon Us (about the epic debate between William F Buckley Jr and James Baldwin). Also in video. It Takes A C-Tribe Village

Preface:The thought leaders, gamechangers, and innovators that we look up too are often impacted by the same thing: they’ve been exposed to people, environments, and interactions that have helped shape and define who they are today. It takes a C-Tribe Village Podcast aims to identify, dissect, and celebrate the unsung heroes, things, and experiences that have impacted the greatest minds of our generation and how these individuals are paying it forward for those to come. Guest: Johnathan Holland, Founder & CEO, SmartPay Checkout Interviewer: Sahr Saffa, Founder at C-Tribe Society and VP of Canadian Operations at AutonomIQ Show Notes “As an entrepreneur it takes every opportunity, and every advantage you can get to be successful. Obviously, the probabilities and the statistics are against you when you’re building a company. The most impactful people for me were the people that helped in the very early days of the business. The thing about these people is I actually don’t really know them. In the early days, I would literally sit in front of a computer and Google “how to build a company in Canada?” What I realized is that everyone around me wasn’t going to help me achieve the level of success I was looking for which was a multi-billion dollar company—which is no small feat. In the early days, if there’s no one giving you advice that you can honestly look at and say “I wish I could trade places with this person,” find examples of people online, read their books, listen to their podcast and do whatever it takes to surround yourself with the information and knowledge that directly correlates with where you want to be.” Bio: Johnathan Holland is a serial FinTech entrepreneur in the payments space with a proven track record of success. Johnathan went through the Next 36 accelerator in 2016 where he was taught by business leaders with 10 figure exits. His current business, SmartPay, has just graduated from the #1 globally-recognized incubator, the DMZ. SmartPay continues to grow month over month, where it’s exceeding over six figures of revenue every single month. Yes, you heard that right: every month. However, this wasn’t achieved overnight. It’s taken Johnathan 2.5 years to see any revenue from any of his business ventures and an additional year and a half just to turn its first profit. The SmartPay solution is simple, but so effective: they allow eCommerce businesses to integrate debit payments on their website. They’ve approached the problem a different way than some of the incumbents in the space like PayPal and VISA Outside of building a fast-growing technology rocket ship, Johnathan comes from humble beginnings and considers himself a late bloomer. Despite this, he advocates for Canadian entrepreneurship and believes that the country has what it takes to grow the next wave of multi-billion dollar companies.

Let's be honest: insurance can be overwhelming in the best of times. Finding a way to simplify it can sometimes feel like a search for the mythical lost city of Atlantis. In another odd irony, insurance is something that people pay for, yet hope to never use. Technology is helping ease the anxiety on both sides of the insurer/insured relationship. On today's podcast, MarketScale Host Sean Heath spoke with Executive Vice-President of Sales & Marketing for SmartPay Solutions [https://www.smartpaylease.com/using-smartpay], Dino Carbone [contributor page]. They discussed how the industry is finally stepping out of its historically stodgy image and the ways in which technological advances can help build the trust necessary for the industry's success. Also, Carbone told us the single most important determination that companies face when establishing an insurance protocol: the difference between a "nice to have" and a "need to have”. "An insurance company touts their best services are their claims handling, and I totally get it, right? When something goes wrong, that business wants to make sure the carrier that they're with is solid financially and knows how to handle claims. But, guess what? What if your client, your insured, never has a claim," Carbone said. "Aren't they your best clients? You're getting all of this premium and you're not having to pay any claims. And so now, the phenomenon again, with technology, is such that: 'let's make sure that the way we bill our best clients is the most efficient way of doing it.'"

Vladimir Goloborodko had been an IT Consultant for 15 years and while managing a large team with clients that had multibillion-dollar budgets, he realized that he wanted to do something new and take the path of a startup with a great idea. So he founded a crypto payment system for small and medium-sized merchants to assist them and their clientele with those smaller purchases that decrease the profit margin because of certain roadblocks that are inherent in the system. The result is a really great idea called SmartPay.As busy humans in the middle of our on-the-go lifestyles, we've all been in situations where we need to grab a quick drink and pack of gum while we're out or pick up that quintessential loaf of bread on the way home. Then we realize that either we don't have any cash on us at the time, or we have a large bill that we don't want to break for something that totals three dollars and seventy-two cents (the "large bill" example not being me, by the way). Not only is this a hassle for us consumers, but it's an even bigger hassle for the merchants. Especially considering the fact that up to 30% of their profit margin get automatically eaten up with bank merchant fees when we use our debit and credit cards. So they end up either imposing minimum purchase amounts when we use a card for payment, or they increase their pricing across the board to help compensate. That leaves us to either pay more for what should have been a quick and easy purchase or keeps us from making these types of purchases at all. SmartPay has a perfect solution that makes it easy for both parties to quickly and easily make these smaller transactions a breeze. Their payment platform is specifically designed to accommodate these exact transaction that we encounter on a daily basis and it doesn't even require them to have any special equipment. The basic premise consists of QR codes that are either generated on their existing smartphone or tablet and in cases with preset pricing, they don't need anything except a sheet or sticker with the QR code. It only takes them about 10 minutes to set up the mobile app to start excepting payments. So customers merely need to scan the code for the payments to instantly be sent to the merchant from their mobile account. It's such an interesting idea, not only for the simplicity of use but also the cost savings and it takes the multiple middlemen out of the processing of each payment transaction down to just two. And as if that weren't incredible enough, it also takes the banks out of the equation as the payments will now go straight through your mobile provider. According to their statistics, mobile operators already have approx. 5 billion customers, while banks have 2 billion. Payment technology on this level has the opportunity to streamline efficiency in much the same manner that the video streaming companies have with network and cable television viewing. We also love how many different uses it would be able to accommodate. It would make paying for lunch, or even things like bus fare, so much easier.Their model also includes proximity marketing that will allow participating merchants the opportunity to send out digital campaigns that are designed to generate new leads, increase business and improve customer satisfaction and loyalty. Check out Vladimir's full interview to learn more about this blockchain solution and then head over to their website to find their roadmap for future platforms that include a web-based gift version and financial services.Sponsored by: Amazon Prime gives you more than just free shipping.
