Cooper Chapman's was a young pro surfer living an extraordinary life, yet in 2018 his youngest sister found herself struggling with the loss of two of her closest friends during her final year of school as did Cooper. How could kids in the very same town be so unhappy that they'd taken their own lives? A year later Cooper began to build the concept for ‘Good Human Factory' in 2019 - a mental health organisation that seeks to normalise mental health discussions and inspire the global community to think about mental health differently. Incorporating in-school and corporate workshops, a podcast, an accountability community and merchandise, the Good Human Factory has grown more rapidly since 2022 than Cooper could have imagined. “Since 2020, we've shared workshops with over 40,000 high school students across NSW, Victoria, Queensland and Tasmania - and over 15,000 of these were last year alone. Sharing his own personal story, as he shares his own mental health journey through his surfing career, challenging audiences to connect with their values - rather than basing their self-worth on external factors. Cooper say he can't believe the support and impact we've had in such a short time.”, well to be honest we can and we know you will enjoy this chat as much as we did.

This week we were incredibly thrilled to have Cooper Chapman join us on the pod! Cooper was a professional surfer for more than 10 years, which saw him compete around the globe against some of the biggest names in the World Surf League before his interest in mental health saw him launch “The Good Human Factory.” An initiative that has seen him travel around Australia inspiring thousands of Australian students, teachers, athletes, and corporates to increase their mental strength and resilience and to think about mental health a little differently.Cooper also runs a podcast of his own “Good Humans with Cooper Chapman” where he sits down with some of the most interesting and thought-provoking people around, and learns from their wisdom and experiences. Cooper is an absolute legend who looks at the world from a refreshing perspective and we can't wait to have him share some insights with us. Cooper's full EP drops on Friday and it is genuinely one of the most thought provoking EPs we have ever release! Cooper Chapman is the man, hands down! It's not every day you meet a person that seems to be on the exact same path as you but a few steps further ahead, that's how it felt when I first got the opportunity to meet Cooper. Cooper first busted onto the seen as an up an coming surfer that quickly put himself at the pointy end of competitive surfing in Australia and then around the world. Cooper, like most athletes based so much of his identity around his craft and as a result when things didn't start going right later in his career he became lost and looked at his entire life not going right. When he lost his ride this gave Cooper a new opportunity, instead of dwelling on it Cooper decided to start up a mental health organisation called “The Good Humans Factory” based around making mental health cool and giving everyone the tools to keep their mental health in a positive state. All around I loved doing this podcast because I feel the things Cooper is bring to the conversation can help so many people in a vast variety of ways. Enjoy!

Many professional athletes go on to second careers in Hollywood or politics – but former pro surfer Cooper Chapman's dreams are a little different.  After seeing firsthand how depression affected his father, and losing two family friends to suicide – not to mention his own anxiety and stress Cooper developed a passion for mental health that has sparked a new career.  In today's episode, Cooper talks about his mental health organization, The Good Human Factory, the pressure of success in pro surfing at 14, and his own struggle with mental health that started when he began basing his self-worth on his surfing achievements.     “I started to struggle a little bit with my identity. I felt a bit of shame, like being around people at my local community when I wasn't succeeding as often. And then I went and spoke to my sports psychologist about how I was feeling and what was going on. And he's like, man … so many people base their self worth and their overall well being on their achievements and their successes. He said, I want you to take this forward in your life and it's gonna change the way you think. I want you to base your life on how well you live to your values. And that was this light bulb moment that completely changed my life.”   Cooper also shares his take on the vast mental health spectrum, the importance of making gratitude a daily habit and why everyone should have the tools to help themselves when their mental health needs a little help.    “We are all on a spectrum of mental health to mental illness. And we're all moving up and down it from time to time. And what I'm trying to do [with The Good Human Factory] is, I like to think of it like, life is almost like a treadmill that's dragging us from good mental health to mental illness. We're all walking against it, just at different paces. And I'm trying to give people the skills to be able to walk against it at a faster pace so that when life does speed up and throw some of these really difficult times at us, you can walk back against it.”   In This Episode (06:27) Cooper's youth surfing career and winning a national title at 14 (9:50) The pressure of early success and how he got into mental health  (12:30) Cooper's “lightbulb moment”  (16:00) The sports psychology approach (18:43) Transitioning from a sports career to a career in mental health, and starting The Good Human Factory (22:17) A typical Good Human Factory workshop (31:47) The mental health spectrum (40:12) Competing against your own success (47:55) Making gratitude a habit   Our Guest Former pro surfer Cooper Chapman started The Good Human Factory after seeing how mental illness and suicide affected his father and close family friends.  Through The Good Human Factory, Cooper has helped thousands of Australian students and teachers practice mindfulness and gratitude, and increase their mental strength and resilience.    Resources & Links Off The Cuff https://www.offthecuff.fm/ https://www.youtube.com/c/OffTheCuffwithDannyLoPriore https://www.instagram.com/1and1otc/ https://www.instagram.com/dannylopriore/ Cooper Chapman https://www.instagram.com/cooperchapman/ https://www.instagram.com/thegoodhumanfactory/ https://www.instagram.com/goodhumanspod/ https://www.thegoodhumanfactory.com/

It's hard to believe Cooper Chapman is only 26 years old, as he has a maturity and understanding of the mental health space well beyond those years . Covid may have slowed down his pro surfing career, but it allowed him to shift his focus to The Good Human factory, whose mission is to inspire others to be aware of, and take better care of their mental health. He gives an amazing insight to the tools he has, and shares with others, to deal with adversity, through his workshops, and his own podcast, “Good Humans, with Cooper Chapman”. This is a powerful listen and message he is using his profile to share.
