What does a vinegar-soured pork curry from an obscure part of southern India have to do with climate change? We chat to Anjali Ganapathy, an unofficial ambassador for Coorg cuisine, the food she grew up with in a hilly forest and farming region of Karnataka. Coorg people are deeply connected to land and seasons; when the weather changes, so does culture. https://www.instagram.com/pigout_coorgkitchen/?hl=en Follow Dirty Linen on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/dirtylinenpodcast Follow Dani Valent https://www.instagram.com/danivalent Follow Rob Locke (Executive Producer) https://www.instagram.com/foodwinedine/ Follow Huck (Executive Producer) https://www.instagram.com/huckstergram/ LISTEN TO OUR OTHER FOOD PODCASTS https://linktr.ee/DeepintheWeedsNetwork SUBSCRIBE TO OUR NEWSLETTER https://deepintheweeds.us6.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=d33e307cf7100cf947e2e6973&id=d17d8213f5 Dirty Linen is a food podcast hosted by Australian journalist Dani Valent. I think the best way to introduce to you today's guest, Accamma Nanjappa, is to read an excerpt of her recipe submission. She says, “It must be noted that the Kodavas or the people of Coorg are not just warriors, but are also children of nature. Hence all our major festivals are celebrations of nature. And what is a celebration without food?” Today Accamma takes us far, far away into the high hills and deep forests of Kodagu, where the Kodava people still observe ancient traditions around the cycle of sowing, planting, and harvesting. In addition to educating me on the language and history of the Kodavas, Accamma shares very personal memories of celebratory nights spent on her family's plantation marking the harvest of first rice, then coffee, mandarins, and black pepper. As for Accamma's Storied Recipe, this is the first time a guest ever gave me a recipe that began with the instructions, “Make the flour”! However, as Accamma walked me through the process of making Thambuttu, which, in her words is like gluten-free, unbaked thick banana (covered with ghee, nutty unhulled sesame seeds, and fresh coconut shavings), I grew much more confident - and, of course, learned a lot too. I mean, did you know you could turn rice into a flour in just 20 minutes? I didn't! Two more quick notes: Accamma and I began communicating about a year ago, when I released an episode with Kaveri Ponnapa titled, “Vanishing Things: Monsoons, Mushrooms, and Culture.” You'll definitely want to listen to this one as well - find the link in the show notes! Accamma owns BeanSong Coffee, a coffee company that ships WORLDWIDE. Some of her coffee beans are grown on the very plantation she was raised on; others come from the birthplace of coffee in India. I had so much to learn about the Coorg people AND the coffee business, I've actually split our conversation into two episodes. So you can look forward to hearing more from Accamma in the next one - But more on that later - for now, Welcome Accamma and thank you all for being here! Highlights Why I was intimidated by Thambutti (“Make your own flour) Details about the 3 festivals of the Kodava people - worship of tools & weapons, worship of the spring, worship of the harvest What the thunder and lighting signified…. Why July and August were deemed inausipicious The very ancient history of the Coorg people, going back to the Greeks and Alexander Women warriors? And who were the warring against? A day planned for trekking transforms into even more of an adventure when fleeting feelings get involved. Blue Dino recalls a recent memory of chancing upon an unlikely companion amidst the greenery of Coorg and a hundred leeches... Transcription: A wagging tail. Check Soft, loving eyes. Check And a full set of floppy ears. Check and Check. Against the green tapestry of Coorg, a sweet creature greeted me, all smiles and happy hops. It was immediately clear, he was loved, but wanted more of it. And who was I to deny him of all my time and attention? So as I trekked on narrow, mushy paths, this cheery companion accompanied me; all too familiar with the birds and the leaves and the leeches all around. But this company was only till a point. You see, the moment I felt the blood being sucked out of my thighs was also when I realised his hops and skips had changed directions. Now going away from me to safer grounds. I had been abandoned, just like that. An hour, three leech attacks, and a hundred shrieks later, I finally made my way back to where we had first met. Now greeting newly arriving trekkers, he all but ignored me. Did it hurt? Just as much as an ignored text. Very well then. The new visitors, all adorned in shorter shorts than mine, could have all his love for now. The leeches would get them later. Involuntarily shuddering, I walked back to the car, side-eyeing my old lover. Though there were new recipients of his love, the markers remained the same: A wagging tail. Check Soft, loving eyes. Check And a full set of floppy ears. Check and Check. I wondered if I showed similar markers when looking at my fleeting loves... If there is, at all, succession in life cycles, Prasad was a child of the Roaring Twenties. And not— as many might fall to wrongly assume—a lapsed constituent of the flower power years of the 60s, nor of the decade of anti-establishment protest that was the 70s.Free of dogma, and always curious about where style is headed next, Prasad Bidapa is Downton Abbey meets The Devil Wears Prada. Most people of talent communicate naturally. They use words, sometimes pictures and sometimes fashion; sometimes all of the above. Prasad is a writer, an incessant reader and a sponge to contemporary style. In this episode, Ramjee Chandran talks to Prasad about his affinity for Oscar Wilde, the eclecticism in his reading and his curiosity for the movement in popular culture.Prasad talks about education and the experiences he shares with wife Judy in parenting their children, Aviva Bidapa (see Instagram), a designer rising in popularity, and son Adam, who runs a homestay in the pretty hamlet of Pollibetta in Coorg. (Great for a weekend getaway, Adam Bidapa's homestay is Coorg Kolamotte Homestay, and can be found here: https://explo.in/3FATCqO.)As someone who is non-judgmental, Prasad is not beyond letting a biting witticism escape him. Listen to Prasad reading Meryl Streep's monologue from The Devil Wears Prada with the conviction that only an insider can rock.Prasad opens the session with a reading of an excerpt from "The Philosophy Of Dress" by Oscar Wilde. Here's the excerpt:"Fashion rests upon folly. Art rests upon law. Fashion is ephemeral. Art is eternal. Indeed what is a fashion really? A fashion is merely a form of ugliness so absolutely unbearable that we have to alter it every six months! It is quite clear that were it beautiful and rational we would not alter anything that combined those two rare qualities. And wherever dress has been so, it has remained unchanged in law and principle for many hundred years."NEW RELEASESWORDLE has swept into the hearts of lovers of things that people do with words, beyond reading and writing them. For 50-year-old Sangeetha Jairam, yoga instructor and motorcyclist, life's lessons have always been through motorcycle metaphors. She got her adventure streak while growing up in the hills of Kodagu (formerly Coorg) and the motorcycle bug from her motorcyclist father, who, by the way, rode his BMW R25 all the way from Munich to India in the 1960s. Following in his footsteps, she learned to ride on the classic bike while she was still in her teens. Sangeetha lives in Udhagamandalam (formerly Ooty) and teaches yoga to young children at The Lawrence School, Lovedale, the same school she went to. It's here that she learned the most valuable lessons of life, especially about the wonder of nature and to have the courage to live up to the school's motto: “never give in”. In fact, the biking enthusiast is also seen practising yoga asanas (postures) in all the exotic locales that she has been to. Often spotted doing headstands on the motorcycle as well. She has dirt biked in Cambodia, been a Race Official for the MotoGP in Australia, ridden with wildebeests in Africa, through the dreaded ‘Tunnel of Death' in Tajikistan, and along the length of the Pamir Highway (the world's second highest altitude international highway), and accomplished more awe-inspiring motorcycling feats than one can imagine. Sangeetha has had no dearth of motorcycling adventures. Her passion has taken her to Bhutan, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Kenya, Australia, Finland, and Norway and to Ladakh, Nagaland and Meghalaya amongst other states, in India. I hope her story inspires you! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/gmbwithkay/message

“Everybody loves a good story, and they would love it even more if they can relate it to what is happening back at home” Vinay Parameswarappa ‘Amazingly different!' That's how the majority of travelers describe India as a destination. The diversity of the people, the culture, and the famous cuisines provide interesting experiences to travelers who visit this country with a rich history spanning over 5000 years back. Our guest today, Vinay Parameswarappa, is an experienced travel operator who understands the complexity of India as a destination and insists on the importance of having expert guidance when visiting India. It is such a great way of knowing destinations with the help of an expert who facilitates and helps you navigate your way around [9:08] One of the experiences we offer is a tour where you go to a market and shop for what you need and go to the home of a local family and you cook a meal in their kitchen [12:20] I like the quote by the former Indian prime minister, “the antidote to terrorism and tourism”. The more you go out and see other people, the more you realize it is the same everywhere [13:02] Commercial Break [13:20] If you are coming to India, it is not about the destination you pick but how you look at the country. [14:15] There are many guests who come to India with western yardsticks, which will definitely disappoint you. [14:45] The South of India has many diverse experiences to offer, including temple architecture, palaces, spices, lovely beaches and great food. Many of us know very little about independent Karnataka's political history beyond a few events and anecdotes. We often know more about the Mysore administration or about Independent India's history, but not that of our own state.Professor A Narayana of Azim Premji University is on Episode 73 of the Thale-Harate Kannada Podcast to help rectify this gap in our public knowledge. He talks to hosts Ganesh Chakravarthi and Pavan Srinath about the first half of independent Karnataka's political history from 1947 till 1984.Dr. Narayana walks listeners through the early politics of state formation, the power and influence of large communities in the state, and a characteristic streak of political opposition that has lasted through the length of Karnataka's political history.ಫಾಲೋ ಮಾಡಿ. DKSpeaks Podcast: Internet Marketing, Blogging and Social Media Tips
Pinterest0 Facebook 0 Twitter 0 LinkedIn WhatsApp 0Shares What was the last internet marketing course that you bought? There is an 80% chance that it was a course to do with some social media advertising – most probably Facebook ads, and which promised you that you will make a ton of money, running these ads. Where did it end up? Did you actually make any money? Hello and welcome to Episode 17 of The DKSpeaks Podcast. I am back after a gap of a week. The last few days were extremely hectic and I desperately wanted to take some time out with my family. And I just decided to set off. You know this is one of the flexibility with this business. You don’t really have to rely on your BOSS to approve your leaves. I spent a few days away from the hustle and bustle of the city in a nice hill station named Coorg. Coorg is known for its coffee plantations and if you ever get a chance to visit India, then you should surely visit Coorg once. When I came back I saw that my inbox was full of mails from marketers promoting the latest launches. And while most of them were on software launches, there were a few that was promoting some of the latest courses. And some of them were courses that taught you how to run ads on Social Media sites and build your list using it. Social Media Advertising – What You Need to Know? Social Media ads are the most talked about topic these days. And every course promises you to help build your business with social media ads. It is true to a great extent that today social media ads can help you build your business. The traffic is cheap, it is targetted and it converts well. But all of this only if you understand how to do it the right way. Else even social media traffic is the same as that of Google Adwords or, just about any other paid traffic source. You will get burnt. Your investments will drain out faster you would have added them to your account. But what is the right way? It is this right way that every other course promises to teach you. But do they really do it? What is the difference in each of these courses that are released pretty much on the same topic. Let’s take an example – Facebook ads. There are numerous courses out there that talks about teaching you a secret sauce that you could use with Facebook ads and then make money or, build your list. But is there really a secret sauce? The Secret Sauce in running Social Media Ads Let us get this straight. There is no secret sauce in internet marketing or, for that matter any business. You need to do the basics and then test. Keep testing until you find what works. Or, follow what works and just do it repeatedly. But do you really think that someone who has discovered “What works” will share it with you for free? They will not. In fact it is this “What works” that these courses promise to teach you by charging you. But they will never share that winning campaign of theirs unless they know that it doesn’t work anymore. Do you really think that there will be a different “What works” in each of these courses? There isn’t. Because what works is plain and simple. It depends upon you, the time you spend, the money you put in and how you test your market. The process to do is all the same – it is the basics. So wouldn’t it be better if you just spent some time learning the basics and then invest time to analyze the results and pick the one that works for you. I ran ads in the body-building niche on Facebook some 10 months back. I started off with a crude ad and spent about $5.00 to test the market. There was a product on Clickbank that I was promoting. The ad didn’t generate any worthy traffic. I refined the ad and I kept doing it until I found people clicking on it. Then I started refining the landing page. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/dkspeaks/message
