From insects and birds, to the underwater world, Juan Ianowski's fascination with the natural world began early.   As a biologist, he was drawn to physiological processes, later scrutinizing the kidneys of insects, whose epithelial cells behave in similar ways to those in human lungs.   By 2015, Ianowski's research was focused on the pathophysiology of lung cells, and the nerve channels controlling them. He and his collaborators were working with the Canadian Light Source, to get a more accurate picture of the tiny cells involved.   But Ianowski had a nagging feeling he was missing the bigger picture.    "I had a very large gap in my life," said Ianowski. "I had never seen a patient."   That summer, he fired off an e-mail to Dr. Julian Tam, who'd just moved into a new position as the director of Saskatchewan's adult Cystic Fibrosis clinic.   They agreed to go for coffee.   Tam already knew Saskatoon, after spending his residency in internal medicine here, followed by a fellowship in Respirology.   "I liked that I could reason out, based on various principles, how things worked in our lungs," said Tam. "There were a few patients that I looked after with CF fairly early on in my training, and I think they really left a mark on me.”   When they met, Tam found Ianowski's work interesting, but saw 'a bit of a disconnect' between the research and his day-to-day practice.  Within months, the respirologist asked Ianowski to shadow him during patient visits.   Most CF patients take dozens of pills each day, as well inhaling nebulized saline solutions designed to loosen mucous, and reduce infections.      “It can be very time-consuming and we would love for their treatments to be as efficacious as possible,” said Tam.   To figure out how, and why the saline solution worked — and what could make it more potent, Tam and Ianowski became collaborators on numerous projects supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Information, the Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation, and Cystic Fibrosis Canada.   With the help of colleagues at the Canadian Light Source and the  Canadian Centre for Health and Safety in Agriculture, they started finding answers by doing mass spectrometry in real time, in a herd of pigs genetically modified to carry the gene for Cystic Fibrosis.   “This is pretty hard because the amount of fluid that we are looking for is very small. So it's about the width of a human hair,” said Ianowski.    That work led to numerous publications, and to the University of Saskatchewan's application for a patent for a better inhaled treatment to treat CF lung disease.   Now, Tam and Ianowski also looking at gastrointestinal disease in CF patients, and TRIKAFTA — an innovative class of drugs that's effective for most — but not all — people with the disease.   Today, they're testing those drugs in the lab to gain a detailed understanding of the effects they produce. A recent CIHR grant will help them better understand the basic epithelia of the lungs. They're also looking for ways to better treat CF patients who cannot tolerate TRIKAFTA treatments.   “Our hope is that some of our work gives us a better understanding of the disease process,” said Tam, as he and Ianowski aim for better treatments, by figuring out which lung cells to target, and where.

“Take care of the little things and the big things will take care of themselves. I've never forgotten those wise words a mentor once shared.” – Norma Beauchamp I recently sat down with a wonderful and inspiring human being, one of those people who has seemingly overcome every hurdle life has thrown her way. And with a smile to boot! That person is today's guest - former president and CEO of Cystic Fibrosis Canada, Norma Beauchamp. Norma currently serves on the boards of Extendicare, Dialogue, Aurora Cannabis, The Ontario Caregiver Organization, ALS Canada, and is a Council Member of the National Research Council of Canada.  She also serves as a regional ambassador for Women Get On Board. In today's episode, Norma shares her hard-earned wisdom and some wonderful lessons that many of us need to hear right now. From building an impressive corporate career and raising a family, to facing down cancer twice - and winning. You'll learn how to: -Avoid making problems worse by dealing with them faster -Leverage a positive attitude when the chips are down -Always stay in control by owning your response to challenges -And much more! If you find this episode valuable, please subscribe and rate us on Apple Podcasts! Breadth Vs. Depth of Experience This was during the Sanofi time: I moved every two to three years into different roles. I moved into Training and Development, and into Marketing, Business Development, to being the Director of Sales, and then running the Business Unit. And I think the message here is to be open to learning. Learn as much as you can. And even if they're lateral moves, the thing is it gives you much more breadth and prepares you for much more opportunities as your career progresses. On Being Adaptable, Especially in the Midst of COVID Learning is key but being adaptable is more valuable. Look at what we're living through right now with COVID-19. We have to be agile, we have to be adaptable; we need to pivot and we need to change. So many industries have pivoted this year and the speed of change has been incredible. So learning and growing brings a lot of value to any person who is developing their career forward and has high aspirations for themselves. How to Deal With Roadblocks In Your Career I have lived in a time when roads were blocked for me because of my gender, and I had to figure out how to navigate my path forward. And this is my advice for people who are currently facing roadblocks in their career path: you just have to be firm about knowing where you want to go and know that there are other ways to get there. Be creative in trying to go around that roadblock.   Links and Resources Connect with Norma: LinkedIn Hersey and Blanchard Situational Leadership Model Situational Leadership by Dr. Paul Hershey (book) The One Minute Manager by Kenneth Blanchard Ph.D. and Spencer Johnson M.D. (book) Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey (book) Dare to Lead by Brené Brown (book)

Check out the video here: https://www.ted.com/talks/drew_dudley_everyday_leadership/up-next. Video Overview: "Drew Dudley's whole approach is to make sure everyone understands how to bring out the leader within. Too many people think great leadership is reserved for extraordinary people. His humorous take will remind you of all the little things leaders do each day. Leadership may be self-taught, but certainly isn't reserved to a special segment of society. Dudley reminds us that leadership is an everyday act that should be celebrated." Prior to founding Day One, Drew Dudley (https://www.linkedin.com/in/dayonedrew) spent 8 years as the Director of one of Canada's largest leadership development programs at the University of Toronto and served as National Chair of Canada's largest post-secondary charity, which mobilized 35,000 volunteers annually to support the work of Cystic Fibrosis Canada. This week, Ken Steele chats with Maureen Adamson, president of Fleming College, about how higher ed leaders can sustain a culture of innovation on campus, particularly by investing in our people.   “The most important thing” Maureen says, is to “give the gift of time” to front-line faculty and staff to reflect and innovate.  “It can’t be someone in a back room trying to think something up.” We also need to invest in our people. “We want our faculty to be best in class; that requires investment and professional development.” It’s also important to bring in external perspectives for lectures and workshops, to help campus personnel “think outside the box” and “beyond our navel,” to be exposed to the many innovative ideas out there in higher ed around the world. “There’s a lot of fabulous stuff out there that is mind-blowing,” she observes.   Maureen has publicly committed that, even in times of serious budgetary pressure, “there will be no cuts to professional development at Fleming College.” Ken observes that it seems particularly appropriate for institutions committed to education, to also be committed to the continuing education of their people. “There is no evidence to say that cutting PD is helpful,” Maureen observes wryly.   From her career experience in the healthcare sector, Maureen has learned that research, whether pure or applied, requires some tolerance for mistakes. “We have to give people the opportunity to take a risk, and to make mistakes… That’s the only way we’re going to get to that point of innovation.” Between academic rigour and public-sector accountability, Ken points out, public colleges and universities experience a compound, cultural “double whammy” that discourages innovation and risk-taking, particularly at the levels of middle management and front-line staff and faculty.  Maureen emphasizes that “it’s all about accountability,” and accountability frameworks need to allow front-line personnel to take some calculated risks. “These kinds of approaches are all hands on deck, and they’re very iterative.”   From her experience in government, Maureen knows first-hand that bureaucracy “is very risk averse.” Colleges are fortunate to be a few steps removed from that bureaucracy, and to have some latitude “to change things up.”  Maureen believes we have to shift the centre of power to faculty in the classroom, and to the student experience itself.  Finally, she observes, in a bureaucratic environment, even if people don’t want to hear it, “you always must speak truth to power… It allows you to sleep at night.”   Maureen Adamson is president of Sir Sandford Fleming College, in the region of Peterborough Ontario.  She has 25 years of leadership experience in PSE, healthcare, government and the not-for-profit sector. She has previously served as President & CEO of the Michener Institute for Applied Health Sciences and of Cystic Fibrosis Canada, as VP Corporate Services at Mohawk College, and as Deputy Minister of both Tourism, Culture and Sport and of the Status of Women for the government of Ontario.   A sincere thank-you to Fleming College for arranging the onsite videography for this episode.   Next week, Ken’s conversation with Maureen Adamson concludes with her thoughts on how to nurture a culture of innovation on campus by investing in our people. This week, Ken Steele’s conversation continues with Maureen Adamson, president of Fleming College in Peterborough Ontario. Maureen was formerly Ontario’s Deputy Minister responsible for the Status of Women, so this week Ken asks her thoughts on gender equity and increasing diversity in higher education.   When it comes to equity of access and success of women in higher ed, “we’ve got a lot of work to do,” Maureen admits bluntly. We know that high-performing organizations require balanced boards of governors, and yet we still don’t see that in many industries. We need to start teaching young people about being leaders and volunteers in the community, and that leadership needs to start at PSE campuses. In particular, she says, “we need to debunk the theory that women don’t want to go into trades and technology because it’s dirty work. It’s not!” Fleming College will be focusing on cultivating interest in these critical areas for our future economy, at a very young age.   Maureen also emphasizes that the pay gap between women and men to this day remains “alarming.” (In Canada, it is often cited that women earn 87¢ for every dollar earned by men.  In the US, women’s earning ratio has risen slowly from 61% in the 1960s to about 78% in 2013.) Maureen also observes that even at the highest levels, women serving on boards and as CEOs still don’t earn the same as men. “There’s a gap in the labour market, and this is one that colleges have a responsibility to fill.”   In higher education, although the number of female college and university presidents has been increasing, leadership in the sector remains male-dominated, but “we’re making strides,” Maureen observes.  (A quick survey of Ontario college presidents finds 11 females and 14 males, or about 44% female.)   Campus student populations are becoming more and more diverse, as institutions recruit increasing numbers of international students, and encourage participation by under-represented groups like visible minorities, students with disabilities, and indigenous students. As colleges recruit more international students in particular, Maureen observes, we need to ensure those students are socially and academically integrated so that all students benefit from the richness of student diversity on campus.  (A recent CBIE survey found that 74% of international students in Canada report some difficulty getting involved in campus life.)   “We have to make it front and centre to be an inclusive and diverse college and culture,” Maureen asserts.  Especially in smaller communities, without widespread diversity in the population, colleges have to pursue international exchanges and partnerships to create a diverse experience for students. The global student today is “super-global,” Maureen explains, and colleges have to respond to that. Global perspectives are crucial to prepare our students to be global citizens, and employees or entrepreneurs who can be successful in a global economy. It has to be “front and centre” as a priority, Maureen insists. “It has to be accomplished through active participation. We can’t just sit around and say we’re going to be inclusive and diverse, but without action.”   Maureen Adamson is president of Sir Sandford Fleming College, in the region of Peterborough Ontario.  She has 25 years of leadership experience in PSE, healthcare, government and the not-for-profit sector. In today’s episode, I talk with leadership author, speaker, and entrepreneur Drew Dudley. Drew inspires us to appreciate leadership in all forms and rewire the way we think of what it truly means to be a leader. He shares some practical tips on how to discover the leader within ourselves, the power in recognizing leadership in ways that may not be traditional, his famous lollipop story from his viral TED talk, and the low down on why Canadians are so polite. Drew’s brand new book, This is Day One: A Practical Guide to Leadership That Matters just came out last week. Key Takeaways: [4:14] Drew fell into his current path by accident. He recounts his time and takeaways from Cystic Fibrosis Canada and a role at Leadership Development at the University of Toronto. He loved mobilizing the college students and translating corporate and business speak into a youthful language. [6:26] Often in leadership, the terms “accessible, practical, and simple” can be seen as pejorative. Drew feels that precisely the opposite is true. Leadership should be open to all, streamlined and tangible. One of the reasons he wrote This is Day One, is to meet people exactly where they are in leadership. We no longer should be intimidated by the term leader, and don’t have to wait for a title or paycheck to validate how little or much we matter. [10:24] We are surrounded by leaders every day. Most of the leadership on this planet comes from people that don’t see themselves as leaders and Drew traces it back to education and socialization. It’s hard to feel like a leader when it feels like your validation comes from outside other than yourself. [15:54] Education should provide a safety net for making mistakes and failing. When the youth starts out as “perfect” with points taken away for what is viewed as a failure, it takes away key characteristics such as courage and resilience. [19:55] Most of us feel like imposters from time to time, but the brave ones acknowledge it and talk about it to empower those around us. [21:49] When Drew works with leaders of all forms, the Top 3 values that usually come up are integrity, honesty, and respect. He works with folks get crystal-clear on those values, prioritize them, and give credit for exemplifying them throughout their day. [25:18] There is a strong distinction between real leaders and catalysts for harm. Real leaders expand the capacity for others and remove fear in order to succeed and expand. Catalysts for harm add fear in order to win for themselves or just their select and chosen group. [31:28] We explore the idea of management as a business skill and leadership as a human skill. [34:26] We talk some cross-border leadership, and Drew encourages us to love Canada from afar. [36:13] It’s important to show people that they matter and have the ability to impact the world. When we feel as though we don’t matter, that breeds helplessness and fear, which turns into anger and hatred. [37:16] Drew shares how to start living Day One as a leader, and to turn core values into actionable demonstrations. Pick a value, define clearly what it means by asking yourself the phrase “this value is a commitment to _____?”, create a question you can’t answer without living it, and then recognize when you or those around you embody it. Almost anyone with a disability can tell you that we are often thrust into the spotlight, even though we never asked for that. People with disabilities are too often seen as “brave” or “strong” or “inspiring,” when in reality we are just living. This is in no way to diminish the struggles of “just living” while overcoming a disability: believe me, we understand that hardship. But to be called “heroic” or “inspiring” just because we have a disability is cheap. It feels like it dismisses us.   We are thrilled to talk to Drew Dudley, a man who’s taken on the challenge of strengthening everyone’s leadership skills. Many people, especially most of us with disabilities, don’t recognize themselves as a leader, and Drew hopes to change that. What defines a leader to him is someone who willingly chooses noble response to whatever he or she faces in life. That choice may seem familiar to the population of those with disabilities: choosing a noble, meaningful reaction to our circumstances is how we get through life!   Drew served as the director of one of Canada’s largest leadership development programs at the University of Toronto for 8 years and then as national chair of a charity supporting the work of Cystic Fibrosis Canada. He has been featured on The Huffington Post, Radio America, Forbes.com, and TED.com, where his TED talk has been voted “one of the 15 most inspirational TED talks of all time.”   Drew talks to us about how people should recognize themselves as leaders, even though they may not see themselves as the picture of an ideal leader in their minds. Leadership is seen in whatever little actions someone takes day-to-day: if you choose to react to something in a positive and an unconventional way, you’ve become extraordinary and exhibited the qualities of a leader.   Drew talks to us about  his popular TED Talk and how he almost didn't give it, because he felt that he was “just a teacher” and his story was really simplistic. But his students reminded Drew of what he had taught them: never define yourself with the word “just” because it gives people permission to expect less of you. Drew gave a talk on how his forgettable statement made a lasting impact on someone else. (Fitting.) He encourages us that if we live and behave mindfully and intentionally, we may never know what small action of ours may impact someone else.   Drew is generously giving all listeners of this podcast 50% off of his online leadership courses! Coming up on Biotechnology Focus Radio: The launch of a new Canadian Regenerative Medicine Alliance, Canada’s House of Commons passes the Genetic Discrimination Act Bill S-201, and a One-Two Punch that May Floor the Worst Infections by stopping antibiotic drug resistance. Welcome to another episode of Biotechnology Focus Radio. I’m your host Shawn Lawrence, here to give you a rundown of this week’s top stories on the Canadian biotech scene. Our first story this week takes us to Toronto, where Antibe Therapeutics Inc. reports it has signed an exclusive licensing and distribution agreement with a pharmaceutical company, Laboratories Acbel SA (Acbel), for its lead product ATB-346. ATB-346 is an anti-inflammatory drug, designed to spare the gastrointestinal tract of the ulcers and bleeding normally associated with NSAIDs. The agreement covers distribution in Greece, Romania, Serbia, Bulgaria, Albania, Algeria and Jordan. Antibe will receive an upfront, non-dilutive payment of $1.1 million, and is entitled to receive a 5 per cent royalty on net sales of ATB-346 in these countries. The agreement has a 30-year term with contemplated renewals thereafter. Acbel, through its affiliates and partners, is the largest seller of naproxen in this region, which represents approximately one per cent of the global market for nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The global market for NSAIDs is in excess of US$12 billion (Evaluate Pharma). In a recent Phase 2 clinical trial, ATB-346 was found to be highly effective in reducing the pain associated with osteoarthritis of the knee. Antibe says it will now initiate two larger Phase 2 double-blind trials: a placebo-controlled dose-ranging study to determine the go-to-market dose, and an active comparator trial to demonstrate superior GI safety. Antibe also has two other therapeutic candidates in development: ATB-352 and ATB-340. ATB-352 is a non-addictive analgesic for treating severe acute pain and ATB-340 is a GI-safe derivative of aspirin. Antibe intends to leverage data across its programs to secure licensing agreements whenever possible. In regulatory news Canada’s House of Commons has passed Bill S-201 (An Act to Prohibit and Prevent Genetic Discrimination in Canada), as it was presented, by the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights on Wednesday March 8, 2017. According to Bev Heim-Myers, chair of the Coalition for Genetic Fairness and CEO of the Huntington Society of Canada (HSC), while the Bill will still have to go to the Senate, all indications point to it being fully supported. Heim-Myers adds that Canada has finally caught up to other western jurisdictions in regards to protection of genetic information and Canadian legislation has caught up to science. Since the Genome Project was launched in the early 1990s, Canada had been the only G7 country that had not taken steps to prevent genetic discrimination. With this decision, this changes. Qu Biologics Inc., a biopharmaceutical company developing Site Specific Immunomodulators (SSIs) that aim to “reboot” the body’s innate immune system, has reported positive genetic analyses of their recently completed Phase 2 clinical studies in Crohn’s Disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC). These findings suggest that, for the first time in the field of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), personalized medicine and the application of genetic testing may identify patients highly likely to respond and go into remission with treatment. The analyses identified common IBD-related genotypes with a high likelihood of response to SSI, suggesting that genetic testing may identify a large subset of CD patients (representing approximately 60% of the CD population) with a greater than 80% likelihood of responding to QBECO treatment, the large majority of which achieved remission on SSI treatment. Dr. Hal Gunn, CEO of Qu Biologics, stated, “We are very excited about the possibility of identifying CD and UC patients highly likely to respond to SSI treatment, which would substantially de-risk future trials and be an important advance for patients who currently face the uncertainty of knowing whether current immunosuppressive IBD treatments, which can be associated with significant side effects, will work for them or not.” Dr. Shirin Kalyan, Qu’s Director of Scientific Innovation, added, “Unlike current IBD treatments that suppress immune function, we believe that SSIs, which restore innate immune function, treat the underlying cause of IBD. Consequently, unlike other treatments, we were able to identify IBD-related genotypes highly responsive to SSI therapy. It is exciting that the genotypes correlated with SSI response are highly relevant to SSIs’ mechanism of action.” Based on the promising results of Qu Biologics’ recently completed Phase 2 study in CD, a follow-on Phase 2 study in moderate to severe CD is planned to confirm these findings. Study initiation is anticipated in late 2017. If the genetic analysis results are confirmed in follow-on studies, Qu Biologics’ QBECO SSI has the potential to become first-line therapy for a majority of IBD patients. In funding news, the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) is providing TechAlliance of Southwestern Ontario with up to $1.32 million to deliver on a new incubation program, called BURST, which will provide 30 innovative technology entrepreneurs in southwestern Ontario with mentoring and business guidance, seed funding, exposure to potential investors and access to a dedicated working space in Western University's Discovery Park. As entrepreneurs establish and grow their businesses with help from this program, it is expected that up to 45 new full-time jobs will be created. Building on London's history of innovation in health sciences, a unique partnership with the London Medical Network will also be established to help eligible medical technology companies receive funding. The announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for FedDev Ontario. In Hamilton, ON, McMaster University researchers say they have found a new way to treat the world’s worst infectious diseases, the superbugs that are resistant to all known antibiotics. The McMaster team published their findings in the journal Nature Microbiology last week. Eric Brown, senior author of the paper, a professor of biochemistry and biomedical science at McMaster’s Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine and a scientist of the Michael G. DeGroote Institute for infectious Disease Research says his team looked for compounds that would mess with these antibiotic resistant bacteria, focusing on Gram-negative bacteria which are resistant to all antibiotics including last resort drugs, such as colistin, and lead to pneumonia, wound or surgical site and bloodstream infections, as well as meningitis in healthcare settings. Brown explains that Gram-negative bacteria have an intrinsically impenetrable outer shell that is a barrier to many otherwise effective antibiotics, and this makes these infections deadly, particularly in hospital settings. His team tested a collection of 1,440 off-patent drugs in search of one that might compromise that barrier in the superbugs. “These pathogens are really hard nuts to crack, but we found a molecule that shreds that shell and allows antibiotics to enter and be effective,” Brown said. The scientists discovered the antiprotozoal drug pentamidine disrupts the cell surface of Gram-negative bacteria, even the most resistant. The anti-fungal medication was particularly potent when used with antibiotics against multidrug resistant bacteria. Moreover, Pentamidine, when used with other antibiotics, was found to be particularly effective against two of the three pathogens which the WHO has identified as having the most critical priority for development of new antibiotics. Those were Acinetobacter baumannii and the enterobacteriaceae. The combo therapy also had some impact on the third most critical bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa according to Brown. Brown continued saying These discoveries were found to be effective in the lab and in mice, but more work is needed to offset potential side effects and ensure human safety. Brown adds that his lab is continuing to test more compounds as well. “One of the things we want to pursue further is why this is working so well,” he said. The study was supported by grants from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the National Sciences and Engineering Research Council and Cystic Fibrosis Canada, among others. http://bit.ly/2m3hZq2   In our final story , a group of Canadian Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine Leaders have announced that they are Joining Forces to Advance Canada’s Position in the Field, with the launch late last week of a new national group called the Regenerative Medicine Alliance of Canada. The founding members include: CCRM; The Centre for Drug Research and Development (CDRD); CellCan; Medicine by Design; Ontario Institute for Regenerative Medicine; ThéCell; Canadian Stem Cell Foundation, and Stem Cell Network. The goal of this new Regenerative Medicine Alliance of Canada or (RMAC) will be to advance Canada’s stem cell science and regenerative medicine sector by aligning national activity in the field. Its members say they plan to work collaboratively to share information and identify strategies that will benefit the growth of Canada’s regenerative medice expertise. The initial concept for this alliance was conceived by members of the regenerative medicine community during a workshop on the state of regenerative medicine in Canada. The workshop was held by the Council of Canadian Academies in 2016. Their newly released report notes the importance of strategic coordination amongst the stem cell and regenerative medicine community. Bolstering and aligning programs, training, policy and communication will also be central themes addressed by RMAC. According to the Alliance, With the global market for regenerative medicine iexpected to exceed US$49 billion by 2021, the need to keep Canada well positioned to compete by moving its innovative treatments and therapies out of the lab and into the clinic has never been greater. Countries around the world, including the U.S., Japan and the U.K., have already taken bold steps through investment and regulatory modernization to capture a significant piece of the market. RMAC will serve as a mechanism to support strategic activity across the regenerative medicine sector in Canada. The RMAC will act voluntary organization comprised of national, provincial and regional organizations. All members have mandates relevant to stem cell research and/or regenerative medicine.
