SERIES 3 EPISODE 2: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Don't look now but I think a certain Russian dictator has stopped betting on Trump. In fact, he's started humiliating him. Whatever the deal between Trump and Putin was on Gershkovich – and there is every chance it existed only in that great, amorphous, bug-filled attic that is Trump's mind – it's gone now. On June 5 Trump insisted only he could get him home. Only he would be the recipient of Putin's trust and agreement. He even put a date on it. Not when he was back in the White House but as soon as he was president-elect. Instead Putin just kicked Trump in the balls. Whatever happened, Trump was no longer worth enough to Putin for Putin to let Trump lie to cover his own useless ass. He just let Trump step on that rake. He just LEFT Trump to post impotently on social media about whether we got more prisoners then they did, like he was talking about getting 13 burgers for five bucks at McDonald's instead of just a dozen. TRUMP DOUBLES DOWN ON 'KAMALA IS NOT BLACK, SHE'S JAMAICAN.' Since he thinks immigrants are from asylums because he doesn't know the word has multiple meanings, there's every chance he thinks the "Jamaica" is the part of his home borough, Queens. The stupidity of The New York Times and Washington Post may have helped convince him he's got the winning campaign theme here but his claim she's not really black really cut through - and cut him. THERE'S VP NEWS: JD Vance says nobody's trying to get him off the ticket, everybody's been treated like this. Mike Pence was treated like this (JD? A word, please?) But everybody says the Dump-Vance movement is coming from Kellyanne Conway. On the other side, the tea leaves suggest Josh Shapiro may be Kamala's choice. AND ONE WEIRD TRICK: Imagine being born in 1946, living through Korea and the Cold War and JFK and Vietnam and the Swinging 60s and Watergate and Reagan and The Tech Boom and 9/11 and Obama and every day of your life since you learned how to talk, somebody has called you weird and apparently you'd never heard this… until last week. Happily, Trump has the perfect response to this: I'm not weird, you're weird. B-Block (24:30) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: As Mike Trout loses another season to injury and entropy, Angels' owner Arte Moreno must move him, or the team. The editor of the Cook Political Report thinks if the election is about the issues and not Trump, Trump will win. And Musk says he and Maduro will fight. Ever heard of the boxing matches where the two guys score simultaneous knockouts? C-Block (34:50) FRIDAYS WITH THURBER: From his great near-novel "My Life And Hard Times" it's just another kid from another century trying to get through the bewildering bureaucracy that is a major American college: "University Days."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today's Headlines: Today's major international news includes a historic multi-country prisoner swap resulting in the release of 16 individuals, including four Americans, from Russia. The Americans released are journalist Evan Gershkovich, activist Vladimir Kara-Murza, journalist Alsu Kurmasheva, and corporate security executive Paul Whelan. This swap, involving seven countries, is the largest between Russia and the West since the Cold War. Russia receives eight prisoners in return, including assassin Vadim Krasikov. In response to the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, Iranian Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has ordered a retaliatory strike against Israel. The Biden administration anticipates a response similar to previous attacks but potentially larger. Haniyeh was killed by a bomb planted months earlier in a guest house controlled by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The US State Department has recognized Edmundo Gonzalez's electoral victory in Venezuela, urging for a peaceful transition from Nicolás Maduro, who falsely claims victory. Vice President Kamala Harris is vetting potential running mates for her presidential campaign, with six candidates in consideration. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper have withdrawn from contention. Lastly, Simone Biles won her 9th gold medal in the women's all-around gymnastics final, becoming the oldest Olympic women's gymnastics champion since 1952. Teammate Suni Lee secured the bronze medal. Hillsdale College Radio General Manager and Radio Free Hillsdale Hour Host Scot Bertram is in for Jim today. After a brief update on the prisoner swap with Russia, Scot and Greg discuss the final jockeying among Democrats to be the vice presidential nominee, July's worse-than-expected unemployment report, and Kamala flubbing her first unscripted moment in weeks.First, they examine the state of the Democrats' veepstakes, including some last-minute efforts to pour cold water on the possibility of Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro joining the Harris ticket. They also comment on how aggressively some figures are campaigning for the job when historically they have downplayed any interest.Next, they wince as the July unemployment report shows significantly fewer jobs created than expected last month, plus an uptick in the jobless rate and the number of Americans unemployed overall. Is this evidence of a possible recession on the horizon or just a one-month anomaly? Finally, they react to Vice President Harris finally having an unscripted moment on camera. And even with the softest of questions, her typical word salad was back. Scot says Harris would never have survived a full primary campaign and he marvels at the fawning coverage over her campaign despite the fact she's done absolutely nothing of note in the past two weeks, other than raise money.

The largest East-West prisoner swap since the Cold War occurred on Thursday when Russia freed wrongly convicted Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich along with more than a dozen people jailed by the Kremlin. Gershkovich, along with former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan and journalists Aslu Kurmasheva and Vladimir Kara-Murza, were exchanged for Russian criminals held in the United States and Europe. The swap spanned six countries and included twenty-four prisoners. Distinguished Fellow for the Center for UN and Global Governance Studies at the School of Diplomacy and International Relations at Seton Hall University, Hugh Dugan, joins the Rundown to talk about why this swap is so significant. President Biden was able to help broker this historic prison swap involving seven countries that saw four Americans imprisoned in Russia returned to the states. As praise pours in for the outgoing President, questions remain about Vice President Harris' governing ability. Gershkovich and other Americans left Russian aircraft at roughly 11:20 a.m. ET at an airport in Turkey's capital, Ankara. Gershkovich was then transported to an aircraft lounge on a Turkish bus. Russia had kept the 32-year-old behind bars for more than a year on a false allegation of espionage. It sentenced him in a hurried and secret three-day trial to 16 years in a high-security penal colony.” Rich notes that it's wonderful that Gershkovich has been released but wonders why Pennsylvania school teacher Marc Fogel remains wrongfully imprisoned by Russia? The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (08/01/2024): 3:05pm- WSJ Reporter Freed as Part of Russian Prisoner Swap: Drew Hinshaw, Joe Parkinson, and Aruna Viswantha of The Wall Street Journal report: “Russia freed wrongly convicted Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich as part of the largest and most complex East-West prisoner swap since the Cold War, in which he and more than a dozen others jailed by the Kremlin were exchanged for Russians held in the U.S. and Europe, including a convicted murderer. You can read the full article here: https://www.wsj.com/world/russia/evan-gershkovich-free-cde745b3 3:20pm- While speaking to the White House press, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan was asked about the “imbalance” in the Biden-Harris Administration's prisoner swap agreement with Russia—with Russia receiving hardened criminals while the U.S. received wrongfully convicted citizens and journalists. 3:30pm- Paul Thacker— Investigative Journalist & former Fellow at the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard University—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss his latest article for his Substack, The Disinformation Chronicle. Khelif had previously  been disqualified from participating in women's boxing competitions after testing revealed Khelif possessed XY chromosomes. While appearing on Fox News, boxer Claressa Shields—a two-time Olympic gold medalist—said that while she respects everyone, she doesn't believe it's fair or safe for men to fight women in the boxing ring. 4:05pm- Harrison Fields—Former White House and Congressional Spokesperson & a Surrogate for the 2024 Trump Campaign—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to recap Donald Trump's campaign rally in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. It was Trump's first trip to the Keystone State since he was nearly assassinated in Butler, PA. Last night, Trump invited Tiffany Hall—a single mother of four who lives in PA—on stage to discuss how her life, and the lives of her children, have been made more difficult by Bidenomics and the resulting inflation. 4:30pm- Congress Tries to Protect Children Online: The Wall Street Journal Editorial Board writes: “The Senate on Tuesday passed the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA), 91-3, and who opposes keeping children safe in the cyber wilderness? While well-intended and useful in some ways, the bill is full of land mines that the House would be wise to clean up…If parents don't want their children spending more than an hour on TikTok a day or playing video games past 8 p.m., they should have the power to stop them. But politicians always want more control, and they say it's unfair to ask parents to supervise children online. Thus the Senate bill would empower the Federal Trade Commission and 50 state Attorneys General to serve in loco parentis and police the platforms. Companies would have a legal ‘duty of care' to design their platforms to prevent harm to minors. This means the FTC could sue platforms if it says their features, including algorithms, harm minors.” You can read the full editorial here: https://www.wsj.com/articles/senate-kids-online-safety-act-house-social-media-regulation-federal-trade-commission-30cfe079?mod=opinion_lead_pos1 4:40pm- Hong Kong Wins Gold in Fencing, Taunts Italy with Pineapple Pizza: John Yoon of The New York Times reports: “Losing an Olympic fencing title bout to the champion from Hong Kong was difficult enough for the Italian. Then came the pizza slander. Cheung Ka Long's triumph over Filippo Macchi of Italy in the gold medal bout in men's foil on Monday has led to a sour fallout that has spilled off the fencing strip: Pizza Hut's Hong Kong and Macao branch has offered free pineapple toppings on its pies as fans on social media praised the combination widely shunned by the losing side.” You can read the full article here: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/30/world/olympics/hong-kong-italy-fencing-pineapple-pizza.html 5:05pm- On Wednesday night, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump held a campaign rally in Harrisburg, PA—his first trip to Pennsylvania since he was nearly assassinated at an event in Butler, PA on July 13th. During the rally, Trump emphasized presumptive Democrat presidential nominee Kamala Harris' far-left policy preferences, including: a ban on fracking, abolishing ICE, and ending private health insurance. Trump also spent time discussing Harris' failed attempt to secure the U.S. Southern border. Trump promised the crowd “We're not going to let her do to Pennsylvania what she did to California. She destroyed San Francisco."—even calling out Soros-funded District Attorneys and explicitly mentioning Philadelphia. 5:25pm- Flashback: In 2016, KCAL 9—a CBS News affiliate in Los Angeles, CA—reported that Kamala Harris was accused of treating her Senate “campaign funds like a personal checking account to fund a life of luxury.” When questioned about the accusations, Harris seemingly conceded that money was misappropriated but blamed it on her campaign manager. 5:35pm- Dr. Victoria Coates—Former Deputy National Security Advisor & the Vice President of the Davis Institute for National Security and Foreign Policy at The Heritage Foundation—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss the Biden Administration's prisoner swap agreement with Russia. While it's wonderful that Gershkovich has been released, why does Pennsylvania school teacher Marc Fogel remain wrongfully imprisoned in Russia? Dr. Coates fears that because Russia got the better end of this trade deal, it could encourage Vladimir Putin to imprison more Americans. Plus, why isn't the American media paying closer attention to authoritarian Nicolas Maduro's seizure of power in Venezuela? Coates suspects the media is protecting the Biden-Harris Administration for having eased sanctions on Venezuela in exchange for Maduro's empty promise of free and fair elections—which clearly didn't happen. Her upcoming book is: “Winning the War on Israel: Inside the Battle for the Jewish State and America.” 6:05pm- What's So Great About Josh Shapiro?: Jonathan Chait of New York Magazine writes: “Kamala Harris has the luxury of several promising options for her vice-presidential nominee, but the discussion has focused inordinately on Pennsylvania governor Josh Shapiro. The reason for this, I think, is that Shapiro has some weaknesses that make him distasteful to some potential Harris voters… Democrats have two main sources of concern with Shapiro, one small and one large. The small concern is that he endorsed a school-voucher plan… The more serious criticism centers on his comments on anti-Israel protests since October 7, which he has denounced.” You can read the full article here: https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/josh-shapiro-vice-president-moderate-popular-governor-pennsylvania-palestine-kamala-harris.html 6:15pm- Women Don't Want Shapiro: Mary Ann Akers—Deputy Washington Bureau Chief for The Daily Beast—reports: “Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro is the betting favorite to be No. 2 on the Democratic ticket, but his involvement in a sexual harassment coverup may tank his chances. The issue has come to a head, with a little known women's rights organization urging Vice President Kamala Harris to think twice. In a headline blaring: ‘Gov. Shapiro's Failures Enabled Sexual Harassment,' the National Women's Defense League said in a statement that the Harris vetting team should ‘consider the handling of past complaints of sexual harassment inside the Pennsylvania Governor's office.' The group claims to be a nonpartisan organization dedicated to preventing sexual harassment.” You can read the full article here:https://www.thedailybeast.com/womens-group-to-harris-dump-shapiro-over-sex-case-cover-up 6:30pm- Infuriating 9/11 Plea Deal: Jess Bravin of The Wall Street Journal writes: “The Defense Department approved a plea bargain with Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and two other Guantanamo detainees accused of orchestrating the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks that destroyed the World Trade Center, killed nearly 3,000 people and launched America's 20-year military campaign in Afghanistan. In a Wednesday letter to victims of the attacks, military prosecutors said the three defendants had agreed to plead guilty in exchange for life sentences. It's four martinis for the price of three today as Jim and Greg unpack the latest details in the killing of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh, the prisoner swap with Russia that freed two Americans, the government striking a plea bargain with 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, and Donald Trump focusing on Kamala's race instead of her train wreck of a record.First, they enjoy learning how Haniyeh was killed by a bomb planted months earlier and detonated remotely. It seems to point more clearly to an Israeli operation and a massive, embarrassing failure for the Iranian government and especially its terrorist arm, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.Next, they're thrilled to hear Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and fellow American Paul Whelan are being released by Russia. What reports don't tell us yet is who or what the U.S. is giving Russia in return. And given the Obama-Biden track record on lopsided prisoner swaps, that's an important question. Then, they groan as the U.S. government strikes a plea deal with Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and two other 9/11 conspirators. The agreement removes the possibility of capital punishment for any of them. 9/11 survivors and family members are not happy. And while Jim and Greg understand there's a slight possibility of these terrorists revealing more than they already have, it's hard to imagine anyone more deserving of death then they are. Finally, Jim unloads on Donald Trump for wondering when Kamala Harris decided she was black because he says she spent much of her life identifying with her Indian heritage. Not only does that moment give Harris a chance to go on offense, but it shows Trump getting distracted from going after the endless political liabilities Harris brings into this campaign.

SERIES 2 EPISODE 189: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: The New York Times tried to minimize it but late yesterday it re-surveyed 2,000 voters its previously polled who had Trump up by three. It asked them their opinions after the convictions. The new number is Trump by just ONE. That translates to a loss of SEVEN PERCENT OF TRUMP VOTERS, three percent of which says it will vote for Biden with the other four destined for him or somebody else who isn't Trump. And a quarter of Trump's support among disaffected Biden-2020 voters is gone. And a fifth of double-haters. The convictions CONTINUE to have an impact. And so does calling him "Convicted Felon Donald Trump." MEANWHILE: Has Convicted Felon Donald Trump completed a quid pro quo with Rupert Murdoch's Wall Street Journal? Is he THAT low to trade the life of an American hostage for a big anti-Biden newspaper story?  What would the editors of The Wall Street Journal do if Convicted Felon Donald Trump went to them and said I can get Putin to send home his American hostage, your reporter Evan Gershkovich? What would the editors then do if Trump paused and added: "I would like you to do us a favor, though."And what would the editors do if Trump then paused again and said ‘you need to help get me elected. i need you to join our Biden Age Plot. I need you to write a piece that restarts this Biden Age thing. I'm a convict. I need to change the topic immediately. I need you to publish this by Wednesday.' At 9 PM Eastern Tuesday Night The Wall Street Journal's genuinely unbelievable attempt to reignite what even Politico termed "The Republicans' Biden-Age-Plot" - for whom editors on my high school newspaper would've been fired and probably expelled - dropped like excrement from Rupert Murdoch's soul. And WHAT had happened EARLIER Tuesday? WHAT had happened at 11:22 A-M Eastern, involving Trump and The Wall Street Journal? A video in which Trump, out of the blue, for the first time in two weeks, again promised that Putin would return the WSJ's Gershkovich to Trump - and Trump alone. Is it possible it was a quid pro quo? You know, like the other time Trump offered to save somebody from Putin's evil, if they did his dirty work? Well the writers quoted Kevin McCarthy while dismissing his quotes about Biden's sharpness as "tactical" lying, never thinking maybe he was tactically lying to them. They also interviewed at least three Democrats who said on-the-record that Biden is fine (Pelosi, Patty Murray, Jack Reed) and used not one quote from any of them. Why use quotes that bust your narrative? Or Trump's narrative. Plus the careers of the writers makes the prospect of a Trump/WSJ deal realistic. One was the idiot who mocked Biden's 2021 trip to the cemetery in which his son, daughter, and wife are buried, and who put a front page piece on Hillary Clinton's "coldness" on the front page of The Boston Globe in 2016. The other? Assigned to get reaction to Obama's 2013 SOTU address, she interviewed Ted Nugent. It's the worst thing I've ever even half-believed of any American news organization. But I think The Wall Street Journal may have really whored itself out for Trump. B-BLOCK (32:29) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Mike Johnson misunderstands what "The House Intelligence Committee" means and names to it two of his least intelligent members. Speaking of members, Matt Schlapp with an all-time Freudian slip about Trump's slipping polls. And first Byron Daniels gets nostalgic for Jim Crow, and then he says Biden has taken away black men's... spears. C-BLOCK (39:50) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Since I've attested to the corruption of all Rupert Murdoch news organizations, I might as well tell you of the day I was fired by Rupert - personally - for doing exactly what he told me to do.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
