The Special Kindness of a Social Worker's HeartShe's a faculty member in Cedarville University's social work program. She works part-time at Crossroad Hospice and Dayton Children's Hospital. In the end, however, Melissa Brown is honored to have a front-row seat to the issues facing Americans on a daily basis. These social work situations are not always nice and neat. There's a lot of baggage and heartache that she views on a regular basis, but this offers the jovial and focused professional the opportunity to interact as a licensed social worker at the most critical times in people's lives. As one of four children in her family, Melissa learned from an early age to work together, communicate with family, and embrace the blessings of the Lord. This training ground has proven to be instrumental in her professional career as she teaches future social workers. One case, in particular, is regularly at the forefront of Melissa's mind when she's interacting with clients or teaching her college students. It was when a young child, presumably battling ongoing seizures, was actually physically abused and died from his injuries. It's a case she can't get out of her mind, even many years later. In this case, she goes to one of her favorite Bible verses. Proverbs 15:3, reads, “The eyes of the Lord are everywhere keeping watch over the evil and the good.”Melissa takes comfort in knowing that while she may not know exactly why this young child died, or who abused him, she knows her heavenly Father knows and will make the situation right. This brings her great comfort, and it helps her to be a better faculty member for her social work students.“That situation was very troubling for me, but I know that I am not immune to sinful patterns,“ said Melissa. “That could have been me, so I am not in a position of judgment, but rather, in a position of trusting my Savior because He is the ultimate judge.

This episode of Mommying While Black™ discusses how families are being ripped apart through a phenomenon known as legalized medical kidnapping. If you live in America, are black, and have children under the age of 18, each trip you make the an urgent care, emergency room, standard pediatric visit puts your child/children under the lens of intense scrutiny and your family the casualties of medical kidnapping i.e. Child Protective Services (CPS) taking all minors in the household. In far more sinister and gut-wrenching cases, parental rights are severed forever through the American judicial system. Sadly, your family could be next. The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) is the leading organization for physician board certification. As such, ABMS provides the "expertise, insights and support to elevate the discipline of specialty medicine." (https://www.abms.org/about-abms/) . In 2006, ABMS began to recognize the subspecialty in medicine known as child abuse pediatrics. Dayton Children's Hospital. May 31, 2021. In this episode, MWB sits down with Arianna Brooks, a mother fighting the state of Ohio and CPS to regain custody of her nearly 7-month-old twins, A'mir and Aniyah. The twins were merely 2-months-old when both children were removed from the custody of Arianna and her husband, D'rontae. JD is the CIO at Dayton Children's hospital in Ohio and I reached out to him to discuss CMIO/CIO relationships. The reporting relationships for CMIOs varies widely but the most common are the CMIO reporting to the CMO or reporting to the CIO. An interesting dynamic develops when the resources the CMIO needs to be successful live in the CIO shop. The CMIO/CIO relationship becomes critical to getting things done.

What is RSV and why is this simple cold virus a big deal in our infant and pediatric population?    Steve and Chris track down Michael Schibler (EMS Coordinator at Dayton Children’s Hospital) and one of our own MedFlight Flight Nurse—Tyler Altier to find out why.     Both Michael and Tyler bring a huge amount of pediatric/transport experience where they work in their respected jobs and also are active in the United States Air Force Reserve on their transport team.     We start things out with defining RSV and why this can be a bigger problem for our infant and pediatric patients.   You will be surprised to hear that some basic airway maneuvers is all that is needed in most RSV cases but do progress to more invasive/advanced treatment as they may be needed in our more severe cases.   Come listen and learn as we try to ease some of our anxiety with our high risk/low volume infant and pediatric transports.

Wright State University’s Raiderthon will feature a 15-hour dance marathon beginning on Saturday, Nov. 16, from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. in the Student Union Apollo Room. All proceeds will go toward Dayton Children’s Hospital. Raiderthon is hosted by the Wright State Miracle Makers, a division of The Children’s Miracle Network, which supports local children’s hospitals. Wright State’s Miracle Makers supports Dayton Children’s Hospital. Children with chronic illnesses are often treated at Dayton Children’s and require long hospital stays and challenging treatment regimens. Proceeds from Raiderthon will help pay for medical equipment, such as infant incubators, pediatric vein finders and premature baby diapers, and supplies for patients and their families. Registration for Raiderthon is $15, which includes three meals, live entertainment and meet and greets with some of the Miracle Network families. Those who cannot attend can still donate on the Raiderthon website. The annual Raiderthon dance marathon will raise funds for Dayton Children’s Hospital Nov 16-17. (Video by Kris Sproles) Since 2013, the Wright State Miracle Makers has raised more than $277,800 for Dayton Children’s Hospital through Raiderthon. For more information, visit wright.edu/event/raiderthon. Leading up to Raiderthon, Wright State Miracle Makers fundraise throughout the year to support Dayton Children’s, including on Nov. 7, when student volunteers sold grilled cheese sandwiches at the Forest Lane Community Center. Twenty-four students took orders, made sandwiches and delivered them to hungry students, selling 400 sandwiches and 146 cups of soup. The group collected $600 for their efforts.
