On the last podcast, we talked about "blocking parts." And by blocking, I meant parts that tend to come up when you're trying to get to know another part. Like when you're headed for the kitchen and a part of you says, "I should get to know the part that's leading me to the kitchen right now" but another part comes up and says, "Nope! I don't want to get to know that part. I'll do it next time." I hope that the episode was helpful and that you noticed more of those parts over the past couple of weeks. This week, I thought it would be helpful to focus on another group or cluster of parts that many folx have that I'm calling "disconnecting parts." These are parts that disconnect you from your body for various reasons. They can show up in various ways, such as: Not feeling hunger or fullness cues Not noticing physical cues from your body Having difficulty knowing where parts are within your body Difficulty or reluctance to focus on physical self-care Inability to experience enjoyment or pleasure Those are just a few examples. You may be noticing other ways in which parts may disconnect you from your body. If that's the case, just be curious. Disconnecting parts tend to be protectors who for whatever reason feel the need to separate us from what our body is telling us. They're trying to help us. On this week's podcast, we're focusing on the parts that disconnect us from our body and make it difficult to connect with hunger and fullness cues. We're focusing on: What disconnecting parts are Why they're there How they show up and block hunger and fullness cues What to do about them AND I'm sharing some suggestions from Intuitive Eating that can help you connect to your body even more. We go through four exercises from the Intuitive Eating Workbook that help you to tune into your body as well as your hunger and fullness cues. If you're someone who feels as though you're unable to read your body's cues, you may have some disconnecting parts in your system. Take a listen to find out! Have you ever felt that tiny bit of excitement about breaking a “food rule?” Like finally getting your hands on the “forbidden” chocolate cake, only to inhale half of it and immediately promise yourself you'll “be good” tomorrow? Yeah, we've all been there. But what if that intense food drama could just… disappear? No guilt, no shame, no last-supper mentality—just food, doing what food is supposed to do: nourish and satisfy. So, if you've ever felt trapped in food rules, if “cheat days” have ever dictated your weekend plans, or if you're just curious what the next step in healing your relationship with food looks like—this episode is for you. Elyse Resch, MS, RDN, CEDS-C, Fiaedp, FADA, FAND, is a nutrition therapist in private practice with forty-three years of experience, specializing in eating disorders, Intuitive Eating, and Health at Every Size. She is the co-author of Intuitive Eating, now in its 4th edition, the Intuitive Eating Workbook and The Intuitive Eating Card Deck—50 Bite-Sized Ways to Make Peace with Food. Tweetable Quotes "Maybe for the beginning, you might eat more of something that you have previously restricted, but it takes its place because it's no longer forbidden." - Elyse Resch "It's not like we're ruining the enjoyment of food, it's just that we don't have that charge anymore of, ‘I'm going to get my hands on this and I'm going to be so good tomorrow, I'll just eat it all right now.'" - Elyse Resch "It's all about healing. I never talk about recovery. I talk about the healing process." - Elyse Resch "So every one of us who makes a change in that kind of thinking [ weight stigmatization] is actually bettering the world." - Elyse Resch "Children are listening. Do you ever feel like you have an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other shoulder, and both are constantly talking in your ear telling you what you “should” and “shouldn't” do with food? Even if you've never thought of it in the angel/devil sense before, there's a good chance that you have experienced some type of inner dialogue or food police that has a long list of rules about which foods are “healthy,” which foods are “junk,” and how you shouldn't eat past 8pm. (Cue the guilt when you break one of these rules.) In this episode we're going to talk about how to identify the voices that you're listening to with your eating, and how to connect with your True Self and your body's inner wisdom to tell you what you need. Make sure you stick around until the end because I have a really powerful journaling exercise that I want you to try that is going to help you figure out what your True Self sounds like, and how to let that voice be your guide. Episode Highlights -Identifying the voices of angel and devil on your shoulder, as well as your inner food police, and noticing how they keep you disconnected from your body -How to discover the wisdom of your True Self when it comes to your eating, which allows you to listen to your body, enjoy food without guilt, and honor your health. -A journaling exercise that will help you get clarity on what your True Self wants and needs, and how to silence your inner food police. We love a lot of the non-diet content we see on social media. It's such a great way for people to feel connected and less alone and is often the first introduction people have to a different way of relating to food. But, it can leave people feeling a bit stuck or uncertain. So we chat about what can get missed and some options for ridging the gap. Mentioned in the episode was The Intuitive Eating Workbook and Christy Harrison's 'Anti-Diet' book and our 'detox your metaverse' and positive social media resources are available fro free download here. Annabel Crabb's Glass potatoes that we both want to try cooking recipe can be found here.

Diets, and an obsession with weight, are so much a part of Western culture that it's hardly surprising our teens can struggle to understand how to eat well. When I researched the topic for episode 9, I discovered that many experts are using mindful - or intuitive - eating to treat patients who develop disordered eating patterns. Indeed, the Intuitive Eating Workbook, which is now in its fourth edition, is recommended on the website of the UK's premier eating disorder charity Beat. I reached out to Elyse Resch who is co-author of that book, because she has a long list of academic and industry accreditations, and decades of experience in dealing with eating issues. Even better, she's created The Intuitive Eating Workbook for Teens to help our kids at one of this vulnerable stage. I'm delighted that she agreed to help us unpick how we are talking with our teens about this tricky subject. CONTACT ELYSE RESCH: elyseresch@gmail.comhttps://elyseresch.com/EResch/DEALING WITG EMOTIONAL EATING:https://www.helpguide.org/articles/diets/emotional-eating.htm THE TEN PRINCIPLES OF INTUITIVE EATING:https://www.intuitiveeating.org/10-principles-of-intuitive-eating/• Reject the Diet Mentality. Throw out the diet books and magazine articles that offer you the false hope of losing weight quickly, easily, and permanently• Honour Your Hunger. Keep your body biologically fed with adequate energy and carbohydrates. Otherwise you can trigger a primal drive to overeat• Make Peace with Food. If you tell yourself that you can't or shouldn't have a particular food, it can lead to intense feelings of deprivation that build into uncontrollable cravings and, often, bingeing. • Challenge the Food Police. Scream a loud no to thoughts in your head that declare you're “good” for eating minimal calories or “bad” because you ate a piece of chocolate cake.• Discover the Satisfaction Factor. When you eat what you really want, in an environment that is inviting, the pleasure you derive will be a powerful force in helping you feel satisfied and content. • Feel Your Fullness. Pause in the middle of eating and ask yourself how the food tastes, and what your current hunger level is. • Cope with Your Emotions. Food won't fix any of these feelings. It may comfort for the short term, distract from the pain, or even numb you. But food won't solve the problem. • Respect Your Body. Accept your genetic blueprint. Just as a person with a shoe size of eight would not expect to realistically squeeze into a size six, it is equally futile (and uncomfortable) to have a similar expectation about body size. • Exercise—Feel the Difference. Shift your focus to how it feels to move your body, rather than the calorie-burning effect of exercise.• Honour Your Health with Gentle Nutrition. Remember that you don't have to eat perfectly to be healthy.Previous episode: https://www.teenagersuntangled.com/parenting-tips-9-how-to-help-your-teens-manage-their-screen-time-and-talking-to-them-about-healthy-eating-without-giving-them-an-eating-disorder/Support the showThanks for listening. Let go of the diet rules and food judgments and start thinking like an intuitive eater. If you're tired of feeling guilty about eating certain foods, or you're stuck in the phase of “eat whatever you want, whenever you want,” or you are worried about your weight and your health if you're not dieting - then this episode is for you. You've ditched dieting and have set out to find freedom with food - and that sounds great on the surface. The thing is, it's harder than it sounds. And even though you're not necessarily restricting or depriving yourself anymore, you still feel like you don't feel comfortable or confident about your eating. I get it, because I've been in this “in between” place too. That place where you're not dieting, but you're also not *actually* eating intuitively either, and you're doubting yourself and the process. In this episode, I'm sharing my own experience in shifting from the diet mentality and being really hung up on so-called “healthy eating,” to becoming a full-fledged intuitive eater where I have the peace and freedom with food and my body that I've always wanted AND I am still mindful about my health. It takes some mindset work to get there, and for those of you who are struggling with this, let's talk about it. This is a great episode for anyone who has been working on ditching dieting and learning the ropes with intuitive eating, who has been practicing intuitive eating for a while and feels stuck, and anyone who wants to go deeper into cultivating freedom with food and peace within themselves. Many people with PCOS are made to feel like they cannot be intuitive eater because of hormone imbalances, and this could not be further from the truth! Join me as I explain the 10 principles to intuitive eating, and be sure to continue listening to parts 2 and 3 as we can utilize intuitive eating in our PCOS journey.Tune in to hear:The importance of rejecting the diet mentalityRecognizing the different purposes that foods serveThe difference between fullness versus satisfactionHow to practice body respect Honoring your health with gentle nutritionCONNECT WITH SAM:Follow Sam on InstagramDownload her free Intuitive Eating Workbook for PCOSLearn more about the Nourished with PCOS Program Enroll in Balanced Blood Sugar for PCOS! I'm really excited to be answering a couple of listener questions in today's episode. I answer four questions related to intuitive eating and health conditions, supplements, understanding PCOS after your diagnosis, and tips for getting diagnosed with PCOS when symptoms are being treated by various doctors. I had a lot of fun answering your questions, and I am looking forward to answering more in future episodes.Questions answered on today's Q&A How do you practice intuitive eating with PCOS when you can't eat certain foods, or you know restricting or eliminating foods will make you feel better? Any tips for getting diagnosed when symptoms of pcos have been treated seperately by physician? (Birth control for no periods, acne cream for acne, ssri for mood etc.) What tests can I ask for?Are there any supplements that I recommend as a PCOS registered dietitian?I got my PCOS diagnosis awhile ago but still feel depressed about it. I think it's all of the ”what ifs” and information out there that gets me overwhelmed. What if I struggle with secondary infertility? What if I can't get my insulin resistance under control? Why should I use Ovasitol instead of metformin? What advice do you have if someone is feeling this way?CONNECT WITH SAM:Follow Sam on InstagramDownload her free Intuitive Eating Workbook for PCOSLearn more about the Nourished with PCOS Program Enroll in Balanced Blood Sugar for PCOS! In a world where beauty is so often equated with thinness and weight loss with health, willpower, and virtue, Intuitive Eating gives us a different framework-one that emphasizes the beauty of body diversity and makes food freedom possible. In today's episode, I have the privilege of speaking with one of the co-creators of Intuitive Eating, Elyse Resch, MS, RDN, CEDS-S. Elyse is a nutrition therapist in private practice in Beverly Hills, California, with forty years of experience, specializing in eating disorders, Intuitive Eating, and Health at Every Size. She is the co-author of Intuitive Eating, now in its 4th edition, the Intuitive Eating Workbook, The Intuitive Eating Card Deck—50 Bite-Sized Ways to Make Peace with Food, The Intuitive Eating Workbook for Teens, and The Intuitive Eating Journal—Your Guided Journey for Nourishing a Healthy Relationship with Food. She is also a chapter contributor to The Handbook of Positive Body Image and Embodiment and her work has been profiled in outlets such NPR, CNN, NBC, KTTV, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Associate Press, KFI Radio, USA Today, and the Huffington Post, among others. Elyse is nationally known for her work in helping patients break free from diet culture through the Intuitive Eating process. Her philosophy embraces the goal of reconnecting with one's internal wisdom about eating and believes that all bodies deserve dignity and respect. She also supervises and trains health professionals, is a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist and Supervisor, a Fellow of the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals, and a Fellow of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. In my time with Elyse, we discuss what first drew her to the concept of Intuitive Eating, what Intuitive Eating is and how it differs from diet culture, sneaky ways diet culture is showing up these days, and how the concept of health can be expanded beyond weight. The Plant Centered and Thriving Podcast: Plant-Based Inspiration
Welcome to The Summer of Self-Love Series Part 3! We wanted to finish the series out with one of our favorite reminders that food is NOT the enemy. Diet culture teaches us that we must avoid BAD food at all costs! Cupcakes and Oreos and donuts are temptations that we can NEVER enjoy again. Of course this restrictive way of thinking often leads to cravings and out of control feelings around these foods. We discuss alternative labels and how to approach plant-based eating and intuitive eating without the demonization of food. Digestive diseases and disorders are increasingly becoming commonplace in the world. Things like GERD, Celiac, Crohn's and the ever so common IBS are issues where the gastrointestinal system is dealing with inflammation or bacterial overgrowth. While these conditions range from mild to severe, it can be really tough to face a diagnosis and learn how to eat and nourish their bodies moving forward. In today's episode I am talking to Elyse Resch, a RDN and a nutrition therapist in private practice in Beverly Hills with over thirty-seven years of experience. She helps her client navigate restrictive eating patterns and practice more mindful eating habits. During our conversation Elyse shares her own experience with restrictive eating, infertility and retraining her mindset about food and nutrition. She talks about the intuitive eating framework, misconceptions about this practice, why nourishing your body means you're nourishing your brain and the role diet culture plays in food preference. In this episode, we cover: Elyse shares why she decided to specialize in intuitive eating and digestive disorders [2:37] What is the intuitive eating framework and some of the misconceptions around this practice [11:59] Our brains can't work if we aren't nourishing ourselves and why serotonin matters [23:56] Does aversion to certain food come from diet culture or genuine harm to your body? Last week, we talked about diet culture being a legacy burden that we can give back to those who gave it to us. I hope that that episode inspired you to think about the role of dieting in your life, and I hope that you're at least starting to think about letting some or all of it go. Maybe you've already done that! Or, maybe you're thinking, "Ok Kim, I get that diet culture is toxic and damaging and I'd love to leave it, but I have no idea how!" I hear that allllllll the time. Which makes sense! For one thing, most of us have been dieting to some degree for most of our lives. Dieting is like a safety net that we can't let go of. It feels terrifying to not be following a "plan" or a "program." Diet culture has convinced us that we need them. Without them, we would have no idea what to eat, when to eat, how much to eat, etc. We've also learned from diet culture that we can't trust ourselves with food. We can't trust our bodies to know what type of food is "best" for us, or how much to eat. We can't trust our own hunger cues because if we let them take over, they'll lead us to binge. You want to leave diet culture, but how do you DO that? The answer to that is twofold: You use IFS to keep getting to know the parts of you that use food for emotional reasons or that somehow contribute to your eating patterns as well as the parts of you that don't feel that your body is good enough; and You adopt an Intuitive Eating (IE) approach to food. The combination of IFS and IE is the gold standard, in my opinion, and we're talking about why that is and how they blend together on this week's podcast. Intuitive Eating is definitely getting a lot more attention these days. But if you haven't heard of it, head to episode 6 of my podcast for a full description. In a nutshell, IE is an anti-diet approach to food that includes 10 principles that help you tune into your body and make peace with food. Now, if you've been on my email list for a bit, you know that I love IE and believe in it wholeheartedly. But nothing is perfect, and I do think that IE on its own can be downright impossible for many people. So if you've tried IE and have felt like it doesn't work for you, that actually makes a lot of sense to me. Intuitive Eating on its own can feel terrifying. And it can cause a backlash from your dieting parts. Which is why combining it with IFS is so important. Using IFS to work with the parts of you that are scared of no longer dieting or that are fearful of potential changes in your body is crucial. Without that, IE has less of a chance of working for you. On this week's podcast, we're talking about what both models have in common and how they support each other. Specifically, they both: Focus on the body. Because our parts live in our bodies, IFS strongly encourages us to tune into our bodies and notice where our parts are. Intuitive Eating also encourages us to tune into our bodies in terms of hunger and fullness cues, noticing what foods our bodies like, and moving in ways that feel good. Reject diet culture. Both IFS and IE see the damage that diet culture does to all of us, and both encourage exiting it as best we can. Encourage us to make peace with food. That means no longer assigning a moral value to food and giving ourselves permission to eat all of the foods that we enjoy. And using IFS helps us to work with those parts who have learned the lesson that some foods are "bad" and shouldn't be eaten, thereby paving the way for us to enjoy any and all foods. Again, IFS and IE are the two most effective models that I've found in healing my clients'--and my own--relationships with food and their bodies. And these two approaches can lead us to being "Self-led" eaters. "I wish I would have known there was another way to help people heal" Her nuggets for us as professionals today include: How she knew she had eating problems but was missed by a therapist who said she was ok because she wasn't throwing up and “looked ok” How she wants everyone to know that restrictive eating to lose weight can cause infertility How important it is to surround ourselves regularly with other professionals Addressing the criticism that Intuitive Eating (IE) can't be used for eating disorders, (see also Christy Harrison's Food Psych podcast recording with Elyse about using IE for eating disorders). Finally, her new journal is coming out, with a book signing THIS weekend if you are near LA or looking for a good reason to visit, and although this journal and the IE program is for consumers, this is a call to all professionals to do our own work through practicing IE in our own lives.
