In this week's episode, I chat with Beth Bigler of Honoring Our Animals. Beth is a pet loss grief counsellor who is offering a really important and valuable space for us to explore the various kinds of grief we will inevitably experience in our lives, especially when we invite our four-legged beloveds into our lives. Beth and I have one of the most important conversations I think I've had around the topic of grief, of our culture's complete avoidance of the grieving and mourning experiences, and how we can transform with and through the process of honouring our animals, and honouring ourselves. This is not a sad conversation, don't worry. But, it is a validating one. We talk about all different kinds of grief - whether that's the grief we feel around not having the kind of dog we thought we would have, or the grief of feeling we are not a good enough pet parent, as well as the grief of anticipating our pet's passing, and the grief we feel when they have crossed over. Beth shares so many helpful tips, and she speaks from personal experience because it was her own experience of seeing a pet loss grief counsellor when her beloved cat Arnie was passing from cancer that catapulted her into this work. Beth also shares how her relationship with Arnie has continued to grow and deepen even as he is on the other side.Whether you are currently experiencing grief, whether you did in the past and didn't feel supported, whether you're wanting to know how to support another who is in the grieving and mourning processes, or whether you just want to know more ways to deepen your relationship with your pet in life and on the other side, this is such an impactful episode. And I hope that it helps create the space here in this community to honor, recognise, and hold space for us all as we experience the big emotions we have in our lives. You can connect with Beth on her website https://honoringouranimals.com and Instagram https://instagram.com/honoringouranimals If you are enjoying the podcast, I would be SO GRATEFUL if you would consider subscribing and leaving a review on Apple podcast. I wish Spotify had that option, but only Apple does at the moment. Reviews are so helpful for me to know what you are enjoying so that I can make sure to create content you find helpful, and reviews also really help others to find the podcast and find the support they are looking for in this beautiful, beautiful community we are creating together! You guys are just so amazing, and I am so grateful for each and every one of you! https://mysticdogmama.comInstagram: https://instagram.com/mysticdogmama
Encore encore Rachel Wright! This episode is hugely important to me as Rachel's mom. I am still getting messages as to how it has helped others by giving them an understanding about other lifestyle choices… “I was SO GRATEFUL to be able to step into a conversation (on this topic) with some knowledge provided so candidly and thoroughly by you and Rachel!“ My daughter Rachel MA, LMFT is a distinguished psychotherapist and is non-monogamous/polyamorous... and she and her partners Yair and Ashley just had a beautiful baby boy. In this episode, we talk about how to have tough conversations and improve communication in all of your relationships. The 2nd half is about her non-monogamous/polyamorous life, its challenges, misconceptions and much more. Someone recently said to me that they listened to the first part of the episode but stopped listening to the rest about non-monogamy because it's not how this person chooses to live. While this lifestyle isn't for everyone it is so important to learn about it. Why? In our current divisive climate we all know that when there is ignorance, there is judging and othering, which can lead to bullying, violence, loss of rights, freedoms and isolation. We need more understanding, kindness and love in this world and it starts with getting to know each other better. I hope you'll listen to this episode at least once and share it to help open more minds and hearts and hopefully encourage understanding and acceptance for all kinds of love.
Please do note that this episode comes with a TRIGGER WARNING for discussions of childhood sexual abuse. It is with pleasure that I introduce everyone to my guest this week, Karl Beckstrand! Karl is a wonderfully complex human (like all of us) and we had a great discussion around ancestral stories, the stories we tell ourselves, and how stories shape this world. But it was his miracle story this week that got me ~ how, after a life shaped by his addiction to sex, Karl suddenly found the healing and the answers that he was looking for! (and guess what everyone...it was in the place that he least expected it!) And I think that a lot of things are like this in this life-that we are eternally looking for answers...or any sort of help around the issues that we are muddling through, and sometimes, those answers are in places that we are not ready to go to yet! But always, they are always there, waiting for us! To check out Karl's groovy work and his books, click here. I am ever SO GRATEFUL to all of you who listen to this podcast, and support me with sweet reviews and glorious texts telling me how much you love the pod! You'll never know how much those words mean to me. Your bit of beauty this week comes from an astonishing video shot off of Australia! (I admit it, I am a little late to the party as this happened 9 months ago!) A whale was giving birth and sharks were gathering...suddenly, from EVERYWHERE, dolphins appeared, and helped defend the calf and mother from the sharks! It is truly a jaw-dropping sight to see! Watch it here!

This week Jami Fregeau - The Neurodivergent Nurse - takes the lead on researching and tells Katie about how Paul "Buster" Murdaugh - accused murderer who himself was murdered by his own father - had ADHD. We discuss the darker sides and signs of ADHD in teens and young adults including the downfalls of substance abuse, emotional dysregulation, and how white privilege can actually handicap you more than ADHD ever could. It's the last week before Garet comes back from maternity leave and we are SO GRATEFUL that Jami made time for us in her supremely busy schedule to cover this topic for us. I watched a show recently that reminded me of something I had completely forgotten about that I am SO GRATEFUL this show brought back to my attention, and that is... how my stubborn insistence to "have it my way" SAVED MY LIFE. Literally.
Although she often checks in with me, I had to share about this recent weekend I had that was simply full of Maddie! From a dream to the return of a piece of furniture to an engraved brick, Maddie reminded me of a truth that I always hold on to: That I am never alone. So Grateful for that.
Hey friends! It's been awhile since I checked in with you, so how are you? How have you been doing? I just wanted to make a couple short announcements. First, I wanted to ask for a small favor! If you could take a second and leave my podcast a rating and a review on whatever platform you listen on, I would be SO GRATEFUL! Second, I wanted to remind you about the Q&A feature on Spotify! Feel free to not only answer the questions, but also use that as a way to let me know if you have any ideas on new episodes! I would LOVE your input and feedback! Coming up pretty soon I'm gonna be experimenting with some different types of episodes, maybe introduce some guided meditations? What do you think? My mother and father were both very kind, loving and wise people. Yes, I recognize what a gift I had with both of them and as I got older, and I was sure to let them know how much I appreciated them. My mother, Annie Lorene Jackson, was an elementary school teacher from a Pelham, GA, population of about 3500 now, I imagine it was smaller when she lived there. She was the first person in her family to attend college. She graduated Albany State College/University in1957 and married my father, Moses Cornelius Faison who was working as a librarian in Albany. I have had a love affair with words since the womb I suspect. lol. As you can see, education was a cornerstone in my life and continues to be foundational to who I am as a person. My mother became will in 2011 and she lived with me from 2012 - 2015. I got married in 2014, for the first and only time. :) While my mother lived with me/us for those three years she would encourage me to pat myself on the back...A LOT. Even as a young child I tended to be very serious and focused. Getting married and having my mom and her dog, Lacee, move in with us was a very different lifestyle from it being just me as a single person. I still hear her voice saying, "Baby, pat yourself on the back." Those words make me smile. So I'm patting myself on the back today for being consistent with my journaling and sending out this newsletter/audio post/podcast. It's 37 days into 2023 and I have journaled daily. Yes! In the energy of my mother...what can you do to pat yourself on the back?... I'd love to hear from you. You can send your self-encouraging "pat on the back" to me at barbarafaisonllc@gmail.com. I'm also really excited about my upcoming Affirm Your Life - 14 day audio program on the power of using affirming words in your life. I wonder where I got that from. lol I've been keeping the people in my community busy with listening and testing the affirmation tracks. I am SO GRATEFUL all of my community members. Most of us tend to live our lives in a way that prioritizes comfort and avoids struggle. This is natural, but it's not how Scripture instructs us to live. These are the passages of Scripture most people don't memorize, because they're much harder to understand and live out.
Oral review - the process of speaking what you've memorized out loud - is a critical part of retaining Scripture. Without it, you'll likely never have the confidence to use your Bible memory in daily conversation. Here are 5 practical methods you can start using to review orally. Our bodies are our conduits for experiencing this life. It makes sense that caring for them from a place of love is a worthy investment for us. Self care is part of wholehearted living for both our body and our soul. Sometimes, when people talk about self care, they mention expensive hair products and elaborate pedicures. At Find the Magic, we are big fans of the kind of soul filling self care that is more about true fulfillment (think meditation, time with God, feeding our intellect, etc.). So, when it comes to our bodies, it makes sense that we like the idea of going beyond image based self care and going deeper into truly nourishing our body with foods and love. In this episode, Ali Essig, a plant-based holistic nutritionist and educator, gives us lots of priceless information on how vegetables and fruit are a beautiful, accessible form of self care. She gives practical tips on how to incorporate more of these life improving ingredients into our family's eating habits in a really simple and reachable way.
