This week on the Men at the Movies podcast, we enter the wild wild west with The Mask of Zorro. In Don Raphael, we find insight into how the enemy works. He offers control of our destiny, but the result is always slavery. In Jesus and Don Diego, we find that when we submit, we find life. We choose whether to fight bravely and die quickly, or to become the student when the teacher appears. Let's discover God's truth in this movie. Questions What would it look like to control your own destiny? Where has the enemy pointed you towards isolation? Where are you tempted to control your destiny? How has that resulted in slavery? What would it look like to smile when you fight? Where have you wanted to react and engage in a fight you weren't ready for? How have you “died quickly?” Where is initiation being offered? Where are you as a pupil ready for a teacher? Where do you feel impatient in the process? In trauma, the clock is the adversary, but in caregiving, it's the calendar. While emergencies demand an immediate response, quick actions for caregivers often result in several battles on multiple fronts. Nothing stretches a caregiver too thin like rushing to a crisis- while already embroiled in one. "Oh, yes, my friend, you would have fought very bravely and died very quickly." - Don Diego to Alejandro in The Mask of Zorro. In the long journey of caregiving, caregivers benefit from incorporating "discretionary valor." For many caregivers (including me), the default is to hurl ourselves or our opinions recklessly at situations that require neither. Being still often takes enormous discipline and is its own form of bravery. Although some may not recognize it, knowing when to - or when not to - act often reflects extraordinary wisdom and courage. It's hard to "stay at one's post" when it seems everything is falling apart. Yet one's mettle is often tested by not interfering when things get dicey. Sometimes, others need to experience failure in order to grow. Hampering that experience inhibits their growth. Although not often valued, discretionary valor remains one of the most critical attributes a caregiver can utilize. While soldiers receive medals reflecting bravery under duress, our medals for discretionary valor appear differently. Our awards reflect peace of mind, less drama, and a good night's sleep. "Don't just do something, stand there!" - Unknown
Folks, we made it. Episode 7 of LAS LEGUAS DE LUCRECIA, our podcast dedicated to the films of Lucrecia Martel, is our last. Harold and B finally give up on the whole Spanish/Spanglish thing so that they might speak freely on Martel's most recent film to date: ZAMA. Released in 2017, it tells the tale of Don Diego de Zama, a mid-ranking subject of The Spanish Crown who is stuck in a Central American colony, in every sense of the word. We hope you have enjoyed, and thank you for your time. NOTE FOR CLARITY: in the episode, Harold and B refer to a certain character as "The Oriental." This is the only way the character is referred to throughout the film, and the character is White (he is a European merchant who lived/worked in East Asia).
