Read the full transcript here. What is The Headless Way? What are we like before we accept the names, roles, and narratives given to us by other people? What does it mean for consciousness to be "boundless" or "infinite"? What are the benefits of adopting a "headless" perspective? How can we visit (and feel relatively confident that we've visited) this perspective? Where is this perspective situated relative to the larger constellation of meditation and mindfulness concepts from other traditions?Richard Lang has been teaching The Headless Way for over fifty years having met Douglas Harding, the author of On Having No Head, in 1970. Richard also worked for many years as a psychotherapist as well as teaching tai chi and dance. The Headless Way is a method of waking up to your True Self which is spacious, still, and free. Being conscious of your True Self enables you as an individual to be more creative, loving and effective in the world. "The Headless Way opens up a radically new way of living." Ever asked yourself: Who am I? Get ready and investigate this question with me in this episode. I still can't fully wrap my head around the fact that I spoke with Richard Lang from The Headless Way (spot the wordplay lol). I discovered Richard's work and the theory of The Headless Way on the infamous Waking Up App. In short, The Headless Way offers you a practical, user-friendly way to see Who you really are. The method was developed by philosopher Douglas Harding, and since his passing in 2007, Richard has dedicated his life to sharing the power and message of The Headless Way. I'm surely not exaggerating when I say that this technique has transformed my life and the lives of countless others from the moment we heard about it and started experimenting with it. It's simple yet incredibly profound. The theory includes a variety of "experiments" that you can try in your everyday life to reconnect with your true nature. No believing. No mysticism. Just looking. It might sound crazy, but as Richard always says, "Try it out for yourself!"

20 min Maureen and Pierre talk about how much they love Sam Harris' Waking Up app! What is meditation? What is it not? Sam Harris demystifies a mystical subject and practice.  Less soothing sounds, rustling wind, harmonic bowls, this app is more of a philosophy course that will liberate you from the control your thinking mind most likely has over you. Waking Up introduces practical steps in establishing a meditation practice, while explaining its deep mystery.  Check it out. About half way into the podcast, Pierre describes an experience of dropping into a meditation state which shuts off his brain from processing visual inputs.  Kind of freaky, kind of cool.   One of the more powerful points that Sam Harris makes is deep meditation states are not something achieved at the end of a road of work or practice.  They can be achieved almost instantly by recognizing a new reality, a reality wherein you are object not subject.  A reality where ego disappears.  Brain function is observed (one might say) instead of being put in control of interacting and interpreting what is experienced.  When the brain / opinion / processing drug of perception is removed from interactions, we have an opportunity to grasp the possibility of an experiential reality, a reality where we are not the center.  A book called, Having No Head by Douglas Harding helped Sam Harris glimpse this shifted reality of deep meditation.  Learning Conversation podcasts are about bringing resources to a broader audience's attention.  While Sam Harris doesn't need our help on that score, we want to make sure you know we think this app is a gem!  Check it out.

We will learn: The history of The Headless Way and how to experience it yourself. How to shift, contract and expand your perception of who you are. Exercises to allow you to experience headlessness for yourself. This episode is going to blow your mind. Or, at the very least, it'll blow open your perception of who you are. Your mind is always using cues from your perception, beliefs, and past experiences to create your worldview, which is why so many of us experience the world so differently. But when you strip away everything but the raw data of your senses, it's amazing how little you actually experience. Most of what we think of as our experience is actually interpretation and story-telling. But, with enough mindfulness, it's possible to experience just the raw data. And that's what allows us to be fully in the present moment, which is where we need to be to experience the oneness that all spiritual seekers are aiming for. So today we're going to learn about The Headless Way to experience awakening. Our guest is Richard Lang.

Rev. Saina Fernandez interviewed Shawn Nevins who is an author, advocate, and filmmaker, for Awakening Together's June Satsang, held Sunday, June 19. Shawn began his spiritual path in college with the Self Knowledge Symposium, which led to Richard Rose, an enlightened teacher in rural West Virginia. He spent four years on Rose's farm, meditating, reading, experimenting with celibacy, hypnosis, fasting, dream work, and many other practices, until hitting a dead end. He spent another three years delving into intuition—particularly through writing poetry. Along the way, Douglas Harding‘s suggestion to look at the space he was looking out from challenged everything he thought he knew. Finally, in a moment of complete honesty, he experienced something beyond experience—a place which is no place, where there is no flip side to the coin. His books include Subtraction: The Simple Math of Enlightenment, The Celibate Seeker: An Exploration of Celibacy as a Modern Spiritual Practice, The Resurrection of John Davis: A Screenplay, and Adventures in Caving: Kentucky and Indiana. He is co-author of the poetry collections Images of Essence (with Bob Fergeson) and Hydroglyphics: Reflections on the Sacred (with Phaedra Greenwood), as well as the forthcoming Passages: An Introduction and Commentary on Richard Rose's Albigen System (2022). Shawn's documentary film work under Poetry in Motion Films includes Closer Than Close, which caught the attention of Bruce Joel Rubin (academy award-winning screenwriter of Ghost and Jacob's Ladder), Meetings with Remarkable Women, Traveling Lighter with Paul Hedderman, and Mountain High: Touching the Void with Bob Fergeson. A frequent speaker and workshop leader at TAT Foundation events, Shawn has also spoken at San Diego State University's “Consciousness Hacking” course (2017), the Perfectly Okay online group (2021), Pittsburg Self-Inquiry Group (2022), and been featured on Conscious.tv (2018). His other endeavors include creating and curating an extensive collection of interviews and reviews of spiritual teachers and other resources at SpiritualTeachers.org. In this interview, Richard Lang talks about his journey prior to encountering the headless way, how his desire for awakening evolved over time, What The Headless Way is and how it works, and how we can incorporate frequent moments of seeing our true nature in the middle of daily life, the relationship between love, compassion and the headless way,  and more. He also conducts an experiment for the audience, in which he attempts to make us realize what our First-person experience is actually like. Message from Richard: My name is Richard Lang and I have been involved with the Headless Way for over fifty years. When I was a teenager I was interested in finding out who I really was and by chance one day found myself in a workshop with Douglas Harding, author of On Having No Head. Douglas took me and the other participants through some of his experiments and we all saw our True Nature. Douglas extended a hand of friendship to anyone interested in the Headless Way, so I began visiting him and over the years made many friends who value this direct method of Awakening. One of the things I have learned is that it is very helpful to have friends with whom I can share this Awareness, or Seeing as we call it. I recommend connecting up with other Seers. The Seeing is infectious. As well as practicing this Way, I was personally drawn to sharing it. So over the years, I have given many workshops. I also set up a charitable trust to help make available this modern method of seeing Who we really are. We offer many things on our website, on our YouTube channel, and publish practically all of Douglas Harding's books. We also offer zoom meetings where people can get to know other Seers. Our ambition is to make Seeing as widely available as possible. This is why we are happy to be part of Innercraft.

In this episode, Geoff and Richard discuss the Headless Way, which is a set of reflections and guided meditations that centre around seeing *who you really are*. Richard even guides the listener through a few ‘experiments' from the Headless Way. The Headless Way seeks to highlight what experience is like from a first-person point of view – as a subject. When you look at the world as a subject, you have no head. That's ‘headlessness'. Of course, you still have a head, but it's only visible from the third-person point of view – as an object, as a person. As adults, we go through life seeing ourselves as others see us. For others, we are an object, a person (with a head), a thing. So, we learn to see ourselves as an object for others. Richard encourages us to re-learn what it is like to see ourselves from the first-person point of view – as headless subjects, as empty space for the world. Geoff and Richard discuss the many, deep implications of the Headless Way: identity (who is at the centre of experience?); third-person science versus the science of the first person; links with psychology and mainstream science; theory of mind; stages of development; learning to wear your face; creativity; learning to live with dualisms; otherness and separateness; projection and reflection; sociology, politics and foreign policy; perception; our experience of time; the distance of observation in physics; other animals; other sense modalities; language and culture; and other topics. *** Richard Lang discovered the Headless Way in 1970 when he met Douglas Harding, author of On Having No Head. Though he was only 17, Richard recognised that the Headless Way experiments are astonishingly effective at delivering the experience of *who you really are*. Since then, Richard has been involved in sharing the experience of *who we really are* with others and now has many friends around the world. In 1996, he set up the Shollond Trust, a UK charity dedicated to sharing the Headless Way. Richard is the author of the books Seeing Who You Really Are (2003), Open to the Source: Selected Teachings of Douglas Harding (2005), Celebrating Who We Are (2017), The Man With No Head: The Life and Ideas of Douglas Harding (2017) – and the editor of a recent volume of Douglas Harding's work, As I See It: Articles, selected by Richard Lang (2018). He is also the narrator for audiobook versions of Harding's books, The Science of the First Person and On Having No Head. You can find more material on the Headless Way in several places: on Richard's website (headless.org); on YouTube (youtube.com/RichardLangHeadexchange); through The Headless Way app (on iTunes App Store or Google Play); through Waking Up, a meditation app by Sam Harris; and on Richard's own podcast channel (search for ‘Richard Lang – Headless Way'). While The Headless Way is described as a means of finding one's “true nature” with childlike simplicity. Richard Lang says, “What I don't like about the term ‘true' nature is that is assumes our ‘human' nature is false; I quite like my ‘human' nature.” Richard continues, “I prefer looking at this process as finding both our ‘peripheral' and our ‘central' nature. Why disparages our human nature?” The Headless Way is as established as the 12-Step movement. Richard directs us to The Hierarchy of Heaven and Earth, the greatest book on philosophy penned in 1943 by Douglas Harding, and the origins of the Headless Way. Richard Lang is the Co-ordinator of the Shollond Trust, a UK charity focussed on sharing the Headless Way. If you see a person from 6 feet away, they're a person. From 100,000 miles away they're a planet. From a few microns away they're cells. So what are they at their very centre? Who are we? This is the central question of The Headless Way and today Richard takes us through Douglas Harding's work to answer it along with some meditations and experiments you can do to illuminate these insights for yourself. How Non-being Haunts Being reveals how the human world is not reducible to “what is.” Human life is an open expanse of “what was” and “what will be,” “what might be” and “what should be.” It is a world of desires, dreams, fictions, historical figures, planned events, spatial and temporal distances, in a word, absent presences and present absences. In his new book How Non-Being Haunts Being: On Possibilities, Morality, and Death Acceptance (Fairleigh Dickinson UP, 2020), Dr. Corey Anton draws upon and integrates thinkers such as Jean-Paul Sartre, Henri Bergson, Kenneth Burke, Terrence Deacon, Lynn Margulis, R. You exist at your own centre; so you are the only one who is in the right place to look and understand your individual being. Richard Lang has devoted his life to exploring and teaching “the headless way”: a unique system to answer the question of what life means and who you really are.  Richard met Douglas Harding, author of On Having No Head, as a teenager, and knew immediately that the headless way was what he had been looking for. He now runs workshops on the headless way, produces videos, and has set up the Shollond Trust, which publishes Douglas Harding's and other books on the subject.  Along the way, Richard has also spent thirty years practising as a psychotherapist, and teaching Tai Chi and dance.  Follow Up Join our Supporters Club to access exclusive behind-the-scenes content, fan requests and the chance to ask Andrew your own questions. Richard first saw who he really was in 1970, in a workshop with Douglas Harding, author of On Having No Head. Since then he has continued exploring and sharing this direct way of awakening, leading hundreds of workshops around the world. Richard is co-ordinator of the Shollond Trust, a UK charity founded to share the philosophy and practical awareness exercises or the experiments that Douglas Harding created. Richard’s aim is to share the experience and meaning of who we really are as widely as possible.  My husband, Billy, joins me on this interview as he is the one who has turned me on to this self exploration process.  We had such a wonderful chat with Richard on how he found the Headless Way.  He walks us through a few experiments on helping us see who we really are and what Billy and I have discovered is this truth: once you see what you are at center, then getting into the habit of living consciously from this boundless, timeless space can be effortless.  Learn more about The Headless Way: https://www.headless.org/ Learn more about Richard: https://headless.org/Contact/richard-lang.htm Join a Zoom meeting and experience the Headless Way: https://headless.org/english-new/hangout We hope you enjoy this episode.
