In this Convo of Flanigan's Eco-Logic, Ted speaks with Jim Gromer, Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) at Thermal Banc/TESS Energy Solutions, a collaborative effort of companies building thermal energy storage solutions - turning waste heat into clean energy. Thermal Banc makes up the sales wing, TESS Energy Solutions the engineering wing, Smart Phases the manufacturing wing, and Novacab comprises the battery. The technology is revolutionizing energy efficiency by capturing, storing, and reusing waste heat, significantly reducing industrial and commercial energy consumption. For the facilities they serve, such as data centers and universities, Thermal Banc/TESS Energy Solutions technology supports carbon emission reduction, energy efficiency enhancement, resource conservation, and circular economy alignment, demonstrating a dedication to pioneering renewable energy solutions that not only drive profitability, but also contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable world.Ted and Jim discuss his background briefly, based in Colorado, spending most of his career in the television industry, and recently moving into the renewable energy space with Thermal Banc and TESS Energy Solutions. He digs into the technology, which collects waste heat from different kinds of facilities and up to 135 sources. The collected waste is stored in phase change materials, generating power to offset carbon dioxide emissions and to cut peak demand charges.
In this episode, Robert and Francis dive into the world of cyberspace fractalization and how it has and will continue to change worldwide energy consumption.

Do you prefer multistory episodes, single story episodes, or a mix? Let us know! In this episode of Discover Daily, host Sienna dives into the fascinating concept of the Kardashev Scale, a method of measuring a civilization's technological advancement based on its energy consumption and utilization capabilities. As humanity inches up the scale, currently ranking at Type 0.7276, the implications for our future energy usage and potential for cosmic expansion are staggering. Sienna breaks down the original three types of civilizations proposed by Soviet astronomer Nikolai Kardashev in 1964, explaining the mind-boggling energy requirements for each level and putting Earth's current status into perspective. Sienna explores a recent study in Nature that projects Earth's advancement to Type 0.7449 by 2060, representing a growth of over 50% in global energy consumption within the next 40 years. She discusses the potential impact of game-changing technologies like nuclear fusion and the need for continued research and investment in advanced energy solutions. However, the Kardashev Scale's limitations and criticisms are also addressed, including its narrow focus on energy consumption and the ecological concerns surrounding such massive energy usage.Beyond the scientific implications, Sienna delves into the philosophical questions raised by the Kardashev Scale. As we grapple with the long-term trajectory of our civilization, will we continue to prioritize increasing energy consumption, or will we find a more balanced, sustainable path forward? The scale also holds significance for the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI), offering a framework for detecting and classifying potential alien civilizations based on their energy signatures. Tune in for a thought-provoking exploration of the Kardashev Scale and its implications for humanity's future among the stars. From Perplexity's Discover Feed: https://www.perplexity.ai/page/the-kardashev-scale-bgBvJeXXQSmbOh7C0TmE8QPerplexity is the fastest and most powerful way to search the web. For the world to meet its growing need for low-cost clean energy and achieve ambitious decarbonization targets, land-based onshore wind energy must be an increasingly large part of the electricity generation mix—potentially as much as 20-41% by 2050, according to BloombergNEF and the International Energy Agency (IEA). But there is a challenge: the most efficient and cost-effective wind turbines, currently applied only in offshore wind farms, have enormous blades—some longer than a football field. That makes them extremely difficult, if not impossible, to deliver and deploy, as bridges, tunnels, and road curves literally get in the way.To explore how the onshore wind industry can overcome these obstacles and drive further growth for the sector, Gil Jenkins spoke with Mark Lundstrom, Founder and CEO of Radia. Mark is a serial cross-industry entrepreneur and MIT aerospace engineer who has co-founded companies over the course of his career that seek to bring aerospace solutions to new sectors, including biotech, telecommunications, and materials science. With Radia, Mark is focused on applying these technologies to the low-carbon energy transition. Radia is in the process of building the world's largest aircraft, which will enable the deployment of the industry's biggest and best wind turbines to locations they could never reach before—creating more clean power at a lower cost.Links:Radia WebsiteMark Lundstrom on LinkedInRadia on LinkedInPress Release:Radia to Provide Low-Cost Clean Energy with the World's Biggest Wind Turbines Enabled by the World's Largest Aircraft (March 17, 2024)Press Release: Aerospace Leaders Aernnova, Leonardo and AFuzion Will Partner With Radia to Build WindRunner™, World's Largest Aircraft (July 16, 2024)Whitepaper: DeSolve Study: GigaWind has enormous economic and environmental impact (Princeton University researchers Dr. Jesse Jenkins and Dr. Nestor Sepulveda - September 1, 2023)Episode recorded August 22, 2024 Email your feedback to Chad, Gil, and Hilary at climatepositive@hasi.com or tweet them to @ClimatePosiPod.
In this episode of the Smart Buildings Academy Podcast, Phil Zito discusses five practical strategies to help facility managers reduce their facility's energy consumption. Phil emphasizes the importance of optimizing existing resources and implementing simple changes that can lead to significant energy savings without the need for extensive retraining or costly upgrades. By focusing on these actionable steps, facilities can better manage energy demands and consumption, ultimately contributing to cost savings and sustainability goals. Key Takeaways: Optimize Schedules: Adjust building, floor, and space schedules to align with actual occupancy patterns, significantly reducing unnecessary energy usage. Check Sensor Calibration: Regularly verify the calibration of sensors, especially those related to temperature and air quality, to ensure accurate system responses and prevent energy waste. Verify Damper and Valve Operations: Ensure that dampers and valves are functioning correctly by conducting regular checks during preventive maintenance, helping systems operate efficiently. Verify Set Points: Document and regularly review temperature set points, especially after commissioning or retrofitting, to prevent inadvertent changes that could lead to increased energy consumption. Implement Night Setback: Utilize night setback strategies to widen temperature set points during unoccupied periods, allowing for energy savings while maintaining suitable conditions for space recovery.
Host Chris Adams is joined by special guest Philipp Wiesner, a research associate and PhD student at TU Berlin, to discuss how computing systems can better align energy consumption with clean energy availability. Scientific American is sounding the alarm on the staggering energy demand that A I will add to globe: A conversion to A I would create a ten-fold increase in data centers' energy consumption. Most of the projected energy use is fossil fuels and nuclear. Additionally, “…global data centers, on average, will add 50% to the energy cost” just to *cool* the machines. Jacki asks the question of who will win in the inevitable energy crisis? Humans or A I?

The explosion of AI-powered chatbots and image generators, like ChatGPT and DALL-E, over the past two years is changing the way we interact with technology. Their impressive abilities to generate lifelike images from written instructions or write an essay on the topic of your choosing can seem a bit like magic. But that “magic” comes at a steep environmental cost, researchers are learning. The data centers used to power these models consume an enormous amount of not just electricity, but also fresh water to keep everything running smoothly. And the industry shows no signs of slowing down. It was reported earlier this month that Sam Altman, the CEO of leading AI company OpenAI, is seeking to raise about $7 trillion to reshape the global semiconductor industry for AI chip production.Ira Flatow is joined by Dr. Jesse Dodge, research scientist at the Allen Institute for AI, to talk about why these models use so much energy, why the placement of these data centers matter, and what regulations these companies could face.Transcripts for this segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com Subscribe to this podcast.
