How important is the European Union? What is its role in today's world? Is it still too distant from European citizens? How can it better reach out to young people? To answer these questions, José Maria Pimentel interviews the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola, in this episode of “It's Not That Simple”, a podcast by the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation. As President of the European Parliament (EP), Roberta Metsola is also the Head of the Partit Nazzjonalista (PN) Delegation, one of the political forces within the European People's Party Group in the European Parliament.  A lawyer by profession, specializing in European law and politics, Roberta graduated in 2003, the same year that her country Malta, decided to join the European Union. She was first elected as an MEP for Malta and Gozo in 2013, being re-elected in 2014 and 2019 and becoming in this way, one of the first Maltese women elected to the EP. In 2020, Metsola was elected as the First Vice-President of the European Parliament, during this time, she was responsible for the EP's relations with national parliaments and for the Parliament's participation in the interreligious and non-confessional dialogue. On 18th January 2022 Roberta Metsola was elected President of the European Parliament, becoming the youngest ever person to occupy this role. In this episode, Metsola discusses her efforts to talk with young people in every country she visits, to persuade them to engage with politics and the European Union (EU). She addresses the perception that “Brussels is too far away” and what can be done to change that. Metsola also explains how much Malta becoming a member of the EU changed her country for the better. She then talks about her term as President of the EP and the many crises the EU has had to face during that time. Finally, Metsola considers the specific role of the EP within the EU's institutional framework, and its impact on people's lives, in a conversation well worth listening to. More on this topic Roberta Metsola's State of Europe Speech - 9th November 2023 Roberta Metsola debating the “Future of Europe” with Paulo Rangel and Guy Verhofstadt Roberta Metsola's speech at the World Leaders Forum at Columbia University - 18th September 2023 Other references in Portuguese Essay of the Foundation “O Futuro da União Europeia”, by Eugénia da Conceição Essay of the Foundation “Eleições na União Europeia”, by Nuno Sampaio “Não se abstenha: três razões e mais uma para votar nas eleições europeias”, an essay by Nuno Sampaio Essay of the Foundation “A Democracia na Europa”, by Catherine Moury “Portugal nas decisões europeias”, a study coordinated by Alexander Trechsel and Richard Rose for the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation “Os futuros da Europa”, an essay by Teresa de Sousa “Afinal que Europa é que queremos?”, a debate held by the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation, with Carlos Moedas, Elisa Ferreira, Eugénia da Conceição and Lívia Franco

"Affirmative action" is effectively no more when it comes to college and university admissions in the United States, thanks to a party-line 6-3 Supreme Court decision. Joining me with reaction is Atlanta NAACP chapter president Richard Rose. The passing of MLK's older sister - Christine King Fannin - today is an intriguing irony, of sorts, but her last known speech a decade ago is worthy of a listen. Lots of "smoke" at the UGA football program and this Bulldog fan is concerned there's fire - or a "culture of permissiveness." Is there? Lastly, I for one am okay with action on all the "Hunter Biden" noise - WHEN evidence comes forward. Not "hearsay;" evidence. I'd also love to see the GOP take advantage of this opportunity to dig in on Jared & Ivanka's Saudi windfall, too. Then if there's as much or more "there," then they can dispatch Donald and win over independent voters in time to win the 2024 cycle. There.

For the last 25 years he has studied ancient wisdom traditions of the world. He spent most of his earlier life as a stand up comedian, and writer of sports history. After having a depression at age 28, he came across a Nova TV program on Egyptian Pyramids that changed his life. At that point he put every moment of his time to study the ancient world. Good fortune brought him to spend time with a Korean Zen monk, several Native Indian medicine men, a doctor of medical Qi Gong, herbalists, and alchemists. He saved what money he had and traveled the world to visit ancient sites in Egypt, Mexico and Europe. He has been looking to uncover less how the sacred sites were built, but why, and how can such sites be used by humans today in positive ways. This wisdom was put into the book The Power Of Then. When he was 36 he fell into a canyon in Western Canada, and had a death experience that revealed the false covering of oneself, and of reality. Changing his effort of study, he delved into the work of Gnostic and Hermetic teachings, stone circles and megaliths, as well as the writings and teachings of Tat Foundation creator Richard Rose. This awakening experience was very hard and confusing for him, included years of near incapacitating illness…forcing one to go the only place we have avoided- within. The challenges of dealing with an awakening came to be put in the pages of his new book Falling For Truth.Following a study trip to Florence, new information came to light of the lies of modern history. He thus wrote Exposing the Expositions in 2019 regarding the lies surrounding the World Fairs of the 1800s. Rev. Saina Fernandez interviewed Shawn Nevins who is an author, advocate, and filmmaker, for Awakening Together's June Satsang, held Sunday, June 19. Shawn began his spiritual path in college with the Self Knowledge Symposium, which led to Richard Rose, an enlightened teacher in rural West Virginia. He spent four years on Rose's farm, meditating, reading, experimenting with celibacy, hypnosis, fasting, dream work, and many other practices, until hitting a dead end. He spent another three years delving into intuition—particularly through writing poetry. Along the way, Douglas Harding‘s suggestion to look at the space he was looking out from challenged everything he thought he knew. Finally, in a moment of complete honesty, he experienced something beyond experience—a place which is no place, where there is no flip side to the coin. His books include Subtraction: The Simple Math of Enlightenment, The Celibate Seeker: An Exploration of Celibacy as a Modern Spiritual Practice, The Resurrection of John Davis: A Screenplay, and Adventures in Caving: Kentucky and Indiana. He is co-author of the poetry collections Images of Essence (with Bob Fergeson) and Hydroglyphics: Reflections on the Sacred (with Phaedra Greenwood), as well as the forthcoming Passages: An Introduction and Commentary on Richard Rose's Albigen System (2022). Shawn's documentary film work under Poetry in Motion Films includes Closer Than Close, which caught the attention of Bruce Joel Rubin (academy award-winning screenwriter of Ghost and Jacob's Ladder), Meetings with Remarkable Women, Traveling Lighter with Paul Hedderman, and Mountain High: Touching the Void with Bob Fergeson. A frequent speaker and workshop leader at TAT Foundation events, Shawn has also spoken at San Diego State University's “Consciousness Hacking” course (2017), the Perfectly Okay online group (2021), Pittsburg Self-Inquiry Group (2022), and been featured on Conscious.tv (2018). His other endeavors include creating and curating an extensive collection of interviews and reviews of spiritual teachers and other resources at SpiritualTeachers.org. Watch the video of this episode. What does it mean to be live? Can a hologram be considered performance? Is going to the theatre a private or communal act? And should performing artists embrace and incorporate technological change—or should they resist, and build an oasis from social media and screen time? What on earth is going on with live performance in the digital age? Listen to the first-ever recording of the podcast with a live audience! The panel, moderated by Ben, features Colleen Renihan, Craig Walker and Michael Wheeler of the Dan School of Drama and Music. About the Panel Colleen Renihan Colleen Renihan was delighted to join the Dan School of Drama and Music faculty as a Queen's National Scholar in 2016. She earned a B. Mus. in Vocal Performance from the University of Manitoba, an Artist Diploma in Opera Performance from the Vancouver Academy of Music, and an MA and PhD in Musicology at the University of Toronto in 2011 with generous funding support from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Her dissertation Sounding the Past was a finalist for the Society for American Music’s Housewright Dissertation Award. Dr. Renihan’s research considers aspects of opera and operatic culture from a postmodern perspective. Inherently interdisciplinary in nature, it explores cultural politics, popular culture, performance theory, temporality, memory theory, opera’s interactions with media (specifically film), and opera’s potential for intervention in current debates in the philosophy of history. Her work has been published in a variety of edited collections and journals, including, most recently, twentieth century music, The Journal of the Society for American Music, and Music, Sound, and the Moving Image. Forthcoming publications include an invited chapter on Benjamin Britten’s coronation opera Gloriana to an edited collection for Boydell & Brewer, and a chapter on affective listening in Harry Somers’s Louis Riel for Wilfrid Laurier Press. Two current book projects explore the historiographical dimensions of American postwar opera, and innovation in Canadian opera and music theatre 1970-2010. Dr. Renihan has presented her research at academic conferences in Canada, the United States, and Europe, including chapter and national meetings of the American Musicological Society, and in 2010, she participated in the Society for Music Theory’s graduate student workshop on ‘Music and Narrative’ with Michael Klein. She was a founding member of Operatics (a working group for the interdisciplinary study of opera) at the University of Toronto, a founding member of IPMC (Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Music in Canada), and has been involved with several research and writing projects at the Canadian Music Centre. Learn more about Colleen. Craig Walker is Director of the Dan School of Drama and Music and Professor of Drama, and is also cross-appointed to the Departments of English and Cultural Studies. Kugler’s adaptation of Timothy Findley’s Not Wanted on the Voyage (1997), the medieval morality play Everyman (1996) and Elmer Rice’s The Adding Machine (1993). On the academic side (see profile on academia.edu), Dr. Walker's most recent publication is "Canadian Drama and the Nationalist Impulse" in The Oxford Handbook to Canadian Literature. During this episode I'm joined by an old friend and mentor, David Gold, to discuss, as he puts it, his "evolution from a non-teacher to a non-teacher." We talk about our shared history, going back to my time as college student at NC State, where he was a facilitator of the Self-Knowledge Symposium. He also shares his history with American mystic, Richard Rose, and with the fallen guru, Andrew Cohen. He shares the learnings that were borne out of working with those teachers, and the way that his path has opened into "a love unimaginable."This is part 1 of a 2-part series.Memorable Quotes:“I decided I was going to stick around until I figured out how this man [Richard Rose] did what he did, and I was going to learn his tricks and go take it out into the world and make a lot of money with it, or whatever. Instead, I feel in love with the truth.” - David Gold“The radical equality of unimaginable love is so intrinsic, so natural, and so liberating.” - David Gold“When the truth and you and your deepest desires line up to be one thing that’s pretty much as close to heaven-on-earth as I could possibly imagine.” - David GoldEpisode Links:

Two local, experienced writers wrote two books about the lasting effect on slavery from the same local publisher. You'd think they'd be pretty similar, right? You'd think they'd be pals, right? Wrong! These two fine books are in fact very different ways, and these two fine gentlemen had never met before coming on our show (you're welcome, guys).
