In this episode of the Duck Tape Marketing Podcast, I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Sara Nay. Sara Nay is the COO of Duct Tape Marketing. She oversees day-to-day operations to support the growth of Duct Tape Marketing and the Duct Tape Marketing Consultant Network. She focuses on strategic planning, goal setting, and directing the company's operations in support of its goals. And on a personal note, she's also my daughter—which makes me “Pop Pop” to her kids! In this episode, we change it up a bit as I become the interviewee. We explore my journey into entrepreneurship, why I started my own business, why I didn't work for someone else (the answer will surprise you), my passion for small businesses, and the evolution of marketing over the years. I reveal lessons from my polar opposite parents and my former fears about running a business. We also dive into my favorite topic: the impact of AI on small businesses, the opportunities and challenges they face, and the importance of curiosity and innovation in business. I wrapped up with a glimpse into my future aspirations—what might life look like after Duct Tape? And I answered the timeless question: What's my all-time favorite business book? The Ultimate Marketing Engine: 5 Steps to Ridiculously Consistent Growth by John Jantsch About the Book: It is more difficult than ever for businesses and marketing professionals to cut through the noise to create relationships with their customers. Organizations that focus on converting their customers to members and helping them achieve the lasting transformation they are seeking rather than simply offering the transaction of the moment are winning. The Ultimate Marketing Engine promises to teach readers how to develop a system to take every customer from where they are to where they want to be by building on the innovative principles first brought to the marketing world in Duct Tape Marketing and honed over three decades of working with thousands of businesses. Introducing the Customer Success Track The Ultimate Marketing Engine introduces an innovative new approach to a marketing strategy that will transform how readers view their business, their marketing, and perhaps, even how they view every customer. Readers will learn: Why strategy must come before tactics. How to narrow your focus and choose only ideal customers. Why no one wants what you sell – and what they actually want. How to use story and narrative as the voice of strategy. How to construct the perfect customer journey. How to grow your business with your customers. This book will help readers take control of their marketing while creating ridiculously consistent business growth. Creating Customers for Life Shep Hyken interviews John Jantsch is a marketing consultant, speaker, and author of The Ultimate Marketing Engine. They discuss how to serve, understand, and create evangelists out of your ideal customers. Top Takeaways: · A repeat customer keeps coming back but a loyal customer is someone who will do even more business with you once they come back. · Focus your attention on the growth of your customers, not just on the growth of revenue. This can be done with the 5 Steps to Ridiculously Consistent Growth, which are: o Step 1. Map where your best customers are today and where they want to go. Creating the customer journey is not about a sales funnel. It is about organizing behavior and helping customers reach their goals. o Step 2. Uncover the real problem you solve for your ideal customers. Your customers don't want your products, they want solutions to their problems. o Step 3. Narrow your focus to the top 20 percent of your ideal customers. Identify your ideal clients and ask, "What else can we do for them?" o Step 4. Attract more ideal customers with the narrative they are already telling themselves. Know where your customers are, where they want to go, and how to get them there by understanding the problems that they want to solve. o Step 5. Scale with your customers by serving their entire ecosystem. Quote: "The trick to getting customers for life is serving and understanding your ideal customers. This allows you to grow and scale with them instead of constantly chasing the next new idea or new customer." Today's podcast guest and I both use a very valuable tactic to help our clients improve their marketing message. That tactic is interviewing our client's customers to see what they have to say about the business, instead of simply asking our clients what they think their customers would say about their business. Liston Witherill is the CEO of Good Funnel, a digital marketing agency based in Portland, Oregon. It focuses on data-driven and performance marketing to help clients increase conversions and hone brand messages. Liston shares the philosophy used by myself and many other of the consultants in the Duct Tape Marketing Consultant Network, which is that before you jump into marketing tactics for a client you must first understand why their customers buy from them. That's where interviewing our clients' customers helps. In my interview with Liston, we compare notes on how we go about the process of doing the interviews, what questions we ask in the interviews, and what kind of insight into our client's businesses we get from doing it. Liston also discusses how he uses those insights to increase conversions for his clients. If you take the time to listen to the interview, I think you'll walk away with some great ideas about how you can use feedback from your customers to make adjustments to your own marketing strategy that could significantly improve your results.

“SEO isn’t done unless your done growing.” Growth is something that John Jantsch has helped countless small businesses with in his decades of experience. As the author of the classic Duct Tape Marketing and founder of the Duct Tape Marketing Consultant Network, Janstch has written five books on marketing. His latest, SEO for Growth, asks marketers and brand builders to rethink how they think about SEO. About John Jantsch John Jantsch is a marketing consultant, speaker and author of Duct Tape Marketing, Duct Tape Selling, The Commitment Engine, and The Referral Engine and the founder of the Duct Tape Marketing Consultant Network. His latest book, SEO for Growth - The Ultimate Guide for Marketers, Web Designers, and Entrepreneurs, is changing the way the world thinks about SEO. Episode Highlights Why SEO? Why now? John noted that he gets this question a lot. “I wanted to change the mindset around this. SEO is a huge driver of growth. PR is a channel, content is a channel — so is SEO.” Yet too many view SEO as tactical. Something done after the fact. “They say, ‘we’re done with the campaign — now it’s time to SEO it.’" SEO for growth starts strategically. "You have to know who your customer is. You have to do keyword research and spend time on forums, Wikipedia, Google’s keyword manager, KeywordTool.io, and more.” SEO is not an easy box to check. What about SEO and branding? “Take out everything like the logo and the real workhorse of branding is messaging.” That gets you back to SEO. How do you position your brand around the people and problems that you serve? "We overcomplicate SEO.” While many SEO firms focus on how complex Google’s search factors are, Jantsch asks businesses to get strategic and systematic with SEO. How do we get started? “Make an editorial calendar for the year. Map out your topics and themes by month. This leaves you with both a content and an SEO asset. It’s like the confluence of rivers — when they merge there’s something new." What brand has made John smile recently? “The Hello Happiness Card Company makes me smile so much — I’m wearing their shirt today!” John loves reading the adventures of the founders via their email newsletter. John Jantsch is a marketing consultant, speaker and author of Duct Tape Marketing, Duct Tape Selling, The Commitment Engine and The Referral Engine, and also the founder of the Duct Tape Marketing Consultant Network. Think of Marketing as Value (Like a Product) Instead of thinking of marketing as something you do for or with your prospective buyer, consider it to be value that is baked into your products and services. Marketing content is the voice that conveys your core message to ideal customers. It guides their experience with your business, holding their attention and earning trust along the way. And that content inspired journey continues long after a purchase is made.
