The composition of a large and rich body of vachanas is one of the most impressive expressions of Indian spiritual heritage. Both the quantity and quality of this corpus is unparalleled elsewhere. This enormous output consists of impassioned socio-spiritual prose poems composed by approximately four hundred seeker poets hailing from all sections of society – the whole gamut, from Brahmin to the untouchable, a considerable number of these poets are women representing various castes and professions. Such a phenomenon was not replicated anywhere else in the annals of pre-modern Indian literatures. This episode of BIC talks which outlines the new approach to literary and cultural context of Vachanas was the first of the four part masterclass titled The Paths of the Hand, Heart and Void, on the vachana efflorescence of Karnataka will be an attempt to interrogate the subject from a new angle by poet, playwright and Professor of Theatre and Performance Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, H S Shivaprakash.

Efflorescence, a short story by Miki Lentin takes us into that time when a man bumps into a friend unexpectedly while on an evening walk, with surprising consequences. Efflorescence is part of a collection of short stories released by Miki Lentin called Inner Core, published by Afsana Press that is available to buy as an ebook and paperback with proceeds of all sales going to the refugee charity foodKIND. Miki Lentin took up writing while travelling the world with his family a few years ago. He completed an MA in Creative Writing at Birkbeck in 2020 and was a finalist in the 2020 Irish Novel Fair for his first book Winter Sun. He has been placed highly in competitions including Fish Publishing Short Memoir 2020 and 2022 and Leicester Writes and has been published in Litro, Storgy, Story Radio, MIR amongst others. Miki volunteers with refugee charity foodkind in Greece, and dreams of one day running a café again. Find him on Twitter @mikilentin or read his work on his website. https://www.mikilentin.net/my-writing The reader was Francis Gilbert. Francis Gilbert has been writing fiction for many years. He is best known for his memoir, I'm A Teacher, Get Me Out of Here (2004 Short Books), his story of working as a young, incompetent inner-city school teacher in the 1990s. It was serialized as Radio 4's Book at Bedtime, and spawned a sequel, Teacher on the Run (2006 Short Books). His novel The Last Day of Term (2011 Blue Door Press) is also set in school. However, more recently he has explored more personal topics in his fiction: Who Do You Love (Blue Door Press 2017) is about a middle-aged man reflecting upon a university romance, and Snow on the Danube (2019) is about a brother and sister torn apart by the Second World War. For the past few years, he has been working on writing short stories. He was delighted to read Miki Lentin's powerful short fiction, which he feels shares many similarities with his own work in its depiction of tortured, emotional men. He really loved Miki's story Efflorescence, and hopes other people enjoy his reading of it, as much as he liked recording it. His day job is as senior lecturer in education at Goldsmiths, but his heart truly remains in writing and reading fiction. http://www.francisgilbert.co.uk http://www.bluedoorpress.co.uk This episode was produced by Tabitha Potts.
The vibe is real. Playa magic. Secret sauce. Atypical serendipity. Whatever you call it, it's being studied by social scientists around the world and written about in the annals of academia. The vibe is real, but that doesn't mean we must deny our Dada roots. We can celebrate porta-loo beautification, and its absurd juxtaposition, as a legit Burning Man art experience. We can define Burning Man using a random phrase generator. We can yield a toilet plunger like a royal scepter. We can invent a vibe-sensing device that has no sensors. Stuart Mangrum talks with Dr. Graham St John, cultural anthropologist, author of many books and academic articles about Burning Man culture, festival culture, EDM, psychedelics, and other scholarly adjacencies. 00:00 - Intro02:54 - Water chemistry did not cause these problems. These are structural issues.03:54 - Three main problems: weepers, efflorescence, and calcium nodules.04:09 - Weepers are active leaks in concrete, where water is flowing through concrete. Usually this is from behind the concrete shell due to groundwater pressure. But it can also be on a raised wall where the pool itself pushes through a weakness in concrete.06:23 - Shotcrete is applied pneumatically, and the density of it is important. Minimum 4000 PSI.08:07 - Concrete is not waterproof, it's porous.10:02 - When water takes minerals with it to the other side, that's called efflorescence. Usually it's calcium, and forms calcium carbonate on the outside. It's often confused with scale.12:57 - Calcium nodules are another form of efflorescence, but through pool plaster. They happen when moisture is trapped in or behind the cement. The disagreement in the industry is about how the moisture got there.17:24 - In Eric's opinion, calcium nodules are either in the weakest places in plaster, or they're everywhere. It's almost always a waterproofing failure. Water pushes from the back side, in our experience.21:03 - You can still have calcium nodules in perfectly LSI-balanced water, because nodules are really a form of efflorescence. 24:16 - How do we prevent these problems? Prevention starts with proper shotcrete installation, and we strongly recommend waterproofing the concrete shell. At a minimum, the raised concrete parts.26:09 - Proper waterproofing is strongly recommended by Orenda. And we know it's not always necessary with good shotcrete application, but why take the risk? Waterproofing is relatively inexpensive.28:11 - If you have nodules from groundwater, but not active weepers, the best fix is still chipping out the plaster surface, waterproofing the pool shell, bond coating it, and re-plastering it. It's expensive.28:43 - Recap. It's a special treat to come across a track that effortlessly sends you on a gentle roll along the feel-good emotions from the first accords. Equally impressive is that it's coming on the Zurich-based Project Indigo - the label collaborating with The Stand For Trees and OneTreePlanted foundations to collectively support reforestation initiatives by raising awareness and funds through music releases and events. Their first vinyl debut with their second various artists compilation as part of the 'efflorescence' series, the efflorescence ii [PI001], does precisely that - releases a variety of music bound by the different shades of deep with all proceeds go to purchasing UN-accredited Co2 credits. Produced by one of the label co-founders, Karl Primo, aka lb. honne, b2 "Hydroshells" is the epitome of storytelling we are delightedly premiering today. Remember the moment of deep satisfaction; a careless me-time; lighthearted childhood memory; or the earthy smell that permeates everything when the rain stops and the sun rays beaming through clouds. Something so distinctly pleasant that you recognize it right away, yet not necessarily want to define it, simply enjoying the emotional state it creates. Powdery white stains on your retaining wall are likely caused by efflorescence. As concrete cures, moisture slowly migrates to the surface of the block where it evaporates into the air. Water brings dissolved salts and minerals from within the concrete mixture. As the water evaporates, those minerals are left on the surface of your block, giving it a whitish, hazy, or streaky stain. Here are some tips for dealing with efflorescence, along with much more, on the Today's Homeowner Podcast!
Have you ever heard someone speak and you could feel your brain firing off neurons, making connections and just going wild with excitement? That person is saying something you need to pay attention to. That was my reaction to an artist talk given about 9 years ago by today’s artist. Katerina Lanfranco helped spark my curiosity regarding the connection of nature and art which led me to start this podcast. Gold star for sparking this fire and a reminder that you never know what impact your actions can have on the future! You can check out Katerina’s work currently up at the Nancy Hoffman Gallery and the Sweet Lorraine Gallery in NYC. What is this work all about? Here’s more about her and her work:At the core of my art practice is the act of exploring aspects of nature, science and fantasy. I collect, organize, and recombine images and objects from nature and everyday life. I make art as a way to ask questions about the world that I live in: How do I make the invisible visible? At what point does fantasy become reality? How is our concept of nature a cultural construct? What can we learn from natural forms, cycles, and rhythms? My work seeks to explore the apparent duality of culture and nature, and the ways in which our understanding of nature informs our own identities. With each of my exhibitions I consider in the aesthetic experience of the viewer, and how the site-specificity of the show will evolve and develop in dialogue to the architectural setting of the space. I reference culture-specific modes of representing nature, such as botanical illustrations, floral fabric patterns, curio cabinets, scientific notes, dioramas, and panoramas. Symbolist and Visionary art traditions along with Romanticism and colorists such as the Fauvists and Les Nabis are great influences on my work. Landscapes, sacred geometry, natural disasters, natural history, biological structures, and genetic engineering are recurring themes. I am also interested in cultural conceptions of progress, systems of knowledge, and the problem of creating meaning in relation to the natural world. My current body of work explores geometry and patterns found in nature combined with portraiture and landscape painting that explores emotions and psychology.Katerina Lanfranco is an NYC-based artist who lives and works in Brooklyn, New York where she makes paintings, drawings, mixed media works, and sculptures. She was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and spent her early childhood in Berlin, Germany. As a teenager, she lived in Bangalore (Bangaluru), India. Where can you find good prices on bathroom faucets? You can wait for a sale at the local home store but I’ve got a better solution. Faucet Depot is a great online site that offers discounts on name brand bathroom faucets. I bought a faucet there a few weeks back and saved around $60 versus the home store. They offer a lot more than faucets and it’s worth your time to check them out http://www.faucetdepot.com/faucetdepot/main.asp Do you have efflorescence?
