Emily Perry Short is currently the National Director of Cyber Product at The Baldwin Group regularly consulting on cyber risk management and insurance solutions across a variety of industries with a particular focus on technology, venture capital, and private equity risks. Emily has been in insurance in a variety of forms since 2014, originally as a lawyer focusing on professional liability insurance defense. Her experience as both a defense attorney and a cyber and technology broker gives her a unique perspective when it comes to analyzing cyber risks for clients. In addition to her Juris Doctor, Emily holds the Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US) designation, Cyber COPE designation from Carnegie Mellon, and the Registered Professional Liability Underwriter (RPLU) designation. In January, after a number of years on the Executive Committee, Emily stepped into the role of Chairwoman for TechAssure, an international association of insurance brokers specializing in technology-related risks. She regularly speaks on panels as a subject matter expert on cyber and technology risks. She is licensed to practice law in Kansas and Missouri. In this episode, Eric and Emily Short discuss:Four basic principles of risk management Working with a broker that can give appropriate coverage The risk of cyberattack incidents Cybersecurity is the responsibility of the whole organizationKey Takeaways:Cyber risk management, like any risk management, involves 4 main concepts - accept the risk, avoid the risk altogether, transfer the risk, and mitigate the risk. Organizations should utilize a combination of these strategies.Cyber insurance policies are not standardized, so it's important to work with a broker who understands the nuances between different carrier policies and can help analyze the appropriate coverage.Cyber incidents can have significant financial and reputational impacts on organizations, so having an incident response plan that is regularly tested is crucial for being able to respond effectively.Cybersecurity is everyone's responsibility within an organization, not just the IT department's. Educating and training employees on cyber risks and best practices is essential for prevention.“Humans are the weak link. Here we are the ones who click on the phishing email. We reuse passwords when we shouldn't.” - Emily ShortConnect with Emily Short:Website: https://baldwin.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/emilyperryshort/ Connect with Eric Dyson: Website: https://90northllc.com/Phone: 940-248-4800Email: contact@90northllc.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/401kguy/ The information and content of this podcast is general in nature and is provided solely for educational and informational purposes. In S4Ep14 of the PRP, Adam gets educated by passionate Great Lakes State enthusiast Emily Short, inspiringly creative free spirit Josie Vanderveen and analytical paddling hunk Noah Vanderveen - all of whom have been preparing for the race of their lives at the AuSable Canoe Marathon on July 27th, 2024. This wild and intriguing episode covers a lot of ground and is bound to blow your mind! What's so unique about this race… the better question may be what's not unique about this race?! From running with your canoe down Main St, to paddling all night through the freezing cold, to sitting on your arse for 19 hours straight, to never being allowed to leave the river, the AuSable Canoe Marathon is truly an event like no other! Things get vulnerable when the squad pontificates on the significance of becoming a beginner again. All former NCAA Track and Field athletes at SVSU, Emily, Josie & Noah provide insight into their independent journeys to the AuSable River and share more about why growth in a new sport has been so exciting and reinvigorating. Although the transition periods in our lives are often clunky and intimidating, we must not forget that oftentimes they can yield results and provide changes in perspective we never dreamt possible. Their stories are inspiring, unique and serve as a wonderful reminder to us all - we've got one life to live, don't waste it chasing something that doesn't excite you and never underestimate the paramount importance of being a lifelong learner! Wait wait wait, did Emily attend her first Canoe Marathon while in the womb?! What the hell is an illegal portage?! Stern or bow? Yo, is that Pastor Dean?! Ummm are people pooping in boats?! 6 Dams?? Iron paddlers?! Canon starts?! What on earth is an aqua dump?! Michigan Emmy's?? Italian proposals, sand bars and log jams, oh my!

This and oh so much more in this unique, inspiring and educational episode of the PRP. In S3Ep10 of the PRP, Adam symposiums with three dynamic and enterprising local women who have all been preparing for the Women's Ferry Field 5K Time Trial on September 17th, 2023. Jessica Reynolds, aspiring running coach, self proclaimed hammock hound, and full-time grad student along with Emily Short, seasoned speedster, devoted GLR enthusiast and self proclaimed boat nerd join the show to break bread about all things running, life and representation in the sport.  Olive de Bear, Women's Ferry Field 5K Time Trial race director, botanist extraordinaire and proud PRP alumni joins the show to vibe with the gang and offer a tidbit or two about what has been different in year two of planning and preparing for this emerging event.  Things get vulnerable when the women deep dive into the labyrinthine world of college running and discuss the challenges that each of them faced when suiting up and stepping up to the starting line as NCAA athletes. From team dynamics, to coach relationships, to personal peril and everything in between, the gals share some tremendous awareness into the dissonant world of competing in the sport at such a high level at such a young age. More importantly, the gals discuss what their journey with running has looked like since then and share some priceless gems about how to nurture your relationship with the sport. For them, it's no longer about speed and competition. It's about joy, empowerment and community. As Jessica so elegantly puts it, find your happy place, find your happy pace.   Ummm, what does Olivia mean by the term happy oopsie?! What the hell is a Genus Monsteras? Does Jessica have the best running bucket list in the history of the PRP?! We talking Appalachian Trail?! What in god's name is a canoe marathon?? Machu Pichu?! Bald Eagles?? Some good games to start with (this is hardly an authoritative list): 9:05 - You can easily play this in one sitting, and in most cases, you will want to immediately play again when you finish it the first time. Photopia - This is a spectacularly well-written game, but it can bring up some intense emotions. The Uncle Who Works for Nintendo - A fun horror game. Howling Dogs - This is a work by Porpentine, whom Gil has raved about several times on the show and this episode. Be sure to find both endings. Counterfeit Monkey - A fairly long game by Emily Short built around some remarkably brilliant word-manipulation mechanisms. You will likely need to use an emulator if you want to save your game and use the game's graphical map. Enjoy exploring the IF rabbit hole!

The crew were in San Francisco last week for the Game Developer's Conference, where they spoke to developers and gambled on the results of the annual awards show. Now they’re back to tell you all about their Stateside adventures. Between sessions of Far Cry 5, of course. Adam chatted to Civ IV creator Soren Johnson about his upcoming 4X game. John spoke to Paul Neurath, the creator of Ultima Underworld II. And Brendan was at the awards ceremony at the Independent Games Festival, where he quizzed Tim Schafer. None of these people actually feature in the podcast, but look at all the names we've dropped! TORCH | The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities

A Book at Lunchtime discussion of Iain Pears' interactive novel Arcadia “The Arcadia App is one of the most substantial and interesting works of interactive fiction released last year” begins Emily Short. In this Book at Lunchtime event for the TORCH Humanities in the Digital Age series, the writer Iain Pears, with the academic Sophie Ratcliffe and cross-media authors Alex Butterworth, Emily Short and Richard Beard, discussed his new novel, Arcadia, which takes the form of a print book and an interactive app: offering a range of ways into an adventure story set in 1960s Oxford and the fantasy Anterworld. In this video, the panel talks about the book’s place within a growing corpus of hypertext and digital forms of fiction which are allowing writers to experiment with narrative and narrators, ideas of time, world-building, the experience of reading, and the role of the reader.
