That's the question: "Is Star Trek Dying?" According to Robert Kazinsky, who played Zeph in the Section 31 film, it is -- and he says he's heard that directly from the boss's mouth. So what do we think? Is it true? A couple years ago when we were getting Star Trek for almost a full calendar year, things were looking quite positive. Has that changed? What's the state of fandom now? Has streaming helped or hurt the franchise? If it is true, and Trek really is dying, what's the remedy? What can be done about it? We will answer (as best we can) all these questions and more in tonight's LIVE show. And as always we welcome your questions and insights as well! I've always been s huge fan of Jack Vance and especially the Dying Earth series, second only to Lyonesse in my humble etc. And amazingly we could have been neighbors - his old house (where his son still lives) is a 3-minute walk from my house in Oakland, so when Goodman Games (no relation) kickstarted DCC Dying Earth I was all over it like white on rice. My lovely friends agreed to submit themselves to a quick playthrough of a Dying Earth funnel and here are the results. So join me in the scabrous lowlife picaresque world of Jack Vance's Dying Earth as Jenn, Scott, Spencer and Archie try to make it to the end with at least once character still breathing. Lovecraft.- He corresponded with fellow writers like Robert E. Howard and E. Hoffmann Price.**Legacy and Unique Contributions:**- Clark Ashton Smith's work is celebrated for its rich vocabulary, cosmic perspective, and sardonic humor.- His weird fiction has been compared to the Dying Earth sequence of Jack Vance.- Smith's writing style aimed to captivate readers by using a variety of stylistic resources, akin to incantations.**Later Life and Marriage:**- In 1954, at the age of 61, Smith married Carol(yn) Jones Dorman, a woman with experience in Hollywood and radio public relations.- They lived in Pacific Grove, California, and Smith continued sculpting during this period.**Passing and Legacy:**- In 1961, Smith passed away quietly in his sleep at the age of 68.- His ashes were buried near his childhood home, and plaques recognizing his contributions have been erected in Auburn, California.Clark Ashton Smith's life was marked by a fascinating blend of artistic pursuits, from poetry and weird fiction to sculpture. Ralph Banks editor of Popular Crafts Monthly, was a short stocky man with a round pink face, a crisp crew cut, an intensely energetic manner. Lots of vintage sci-fi stories! Love the narrator's voice. Also – he gives a little snippet about the history of the writer or what magazine it came from. It's fun to hear what people have imagined for the future and what life on other planets would be like. Double thumbs up!” Thanks K Vomer! Your reviews and ratings are always appreciated.John Holbrook Vance, better known as Jack Vance, was born and raised in California. Vance struggled to make ends meet as a young man and worked a number of jobs to survive, a bell-hop, in a cannery, and on a gold dredge, before entering the University of California, Berkeley where he studied mining engineering, physics, journalism and English. He worked for a while as an electrician in the naval shipyards at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He left that job about a month before the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941.He started writing science fiction in the 1940s and his first published story was “The World-Thinker” in Thrilling Wonder Stories in the summer of 1945. He would go on to write about 50 short stories in the 40s, 50s and 60s and numerous novels. One of his best-known titles, “The Dying Earth”, began as a collection of short stories in 1950 and eventually expanded to become a whole series of books set in a far-off future. He won numerous awards: among them three Hugo awards, a Nebula and a World Fantasy award for lifetime achievement. In 1997 he was made a Grand Master of sci-fi, by the ScienceFiction Writers of America.A 2009 profile in the New York Times Magazine described Vance as "one of American literature's most distinctive and undervalued voices."Our story written by the highly acclaimed author is featured in the second edition of Space Science Fiction Magazine, Volume 1 Number 2 in August 1957. Recently, Earth Ancients has presented programs revealing evidence of ancient archeology on the surface of Mars. These programs were designed to highlight scientific research which was suppressed by NASA, or dismissed as pseudoscience by the scientific community. When the “Face on Mars” was first imaged and presented to the public in 1976, NASA immediately claimed that they were a trick of light. Additional images were take on the Cydonia region of Mars, which later presented an amazing variety of buildings, pyramids and structures that were identified and studied by a number of independent scientific groups. The most noted of these groups, The Society for Planetary SETI Research (SPSR), is an organization made up of image specialists and other scientific disciplines. Our program features members of SPSR as we present new evidence of archeology on Mars. George J. Haas is the founder of the Mars research group, The Cydonia Institute (EST1991). His research encompasses over 20 years of study and analysis of NASA and ESA photographs of the surface of Mars. He's the author ofThe Martian Codex: More Reflections from Mars, and Cydonia Codex: Reflections from Mars Dr. Mark Carlotto, Mark J. Carlotto is an image scientist with 30 years of experience in satellite remote sensing and digital image processing. His first book, The Martian Enigmas (North Atlantic Books, 1996), describes in detail his analysis of imagery of the Face and other unusual objects on the surface of Mars. He's also the author of The Cydonia Controversy. Dr. John E. Brandenburg is a plasma physicist working as a consultant at Morningstar Applied Physics LLC and as a part-time instructor of Astronomy, Physics and Mathematics at Madison College, in Madison, Wisconsin. He's the author of Life and Death on Mars (2010), and Dead Mars, Dying Earth (1999) with Monica Rix Paxson.

The 19th album from dungeon synth / dark ambient project Psyclopean. Mark Carlotto & John Brandenburg: Lunar Anomalies and Archaeology Are there archaeological ruins on the Moon?Following the discovery of unknown artifacts and structural anomalies during Apollo 11 & 12 space missions, there has been great speculation that NASA was aware of other civilizations on the moon. For centuries astronomers have observed transient lunar phenomena (TLP) - lights that appear and, in some cases, move across the lunar surface. In 1968 NASA published a report describing hundreds of TLP sightings. With the recent discovery of collapsed lava tubes by Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and other probes, there is growing speculation that vast subterranean spaces exist below the lunar surface suitable for settlement and manufacturing. In this program we consider the possibility that some TLP may originate from within the moon and that collapsed lava tubes may be a more likely place to find evidence of extraterrestrial activity than on the surface.Mark Carlotto is an aerospace engineer with over thirty years of experience in remote sensing, pattern recognition, computer vision, signal/image processing, and terrain mapping. He received a Ph. D. in Electrical Engineering from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1981 and has more than one hundred publications and several books in a number of areas. He's the author of Life and Death on Mars (2010), and Dead Mars, Dying Earth (1999) with Monica Rix Paxson.

In an episode that's been a long time coming, Langdon and Eden tackle Vancian fantasy, the Dying Earth sub-genre, and how these might be subverted to tell both radical and conservative stories. Works covered (beyond the obvious Tales of the Dying Earth by Jack Vance) include Adventure Time, D&D, Gor, The Dancers at the End of Time, Book of the New Sun, and more! Music played: Duel - Children of the Fire https://duel3.bandcamp.com/track/children-of-the-fire
All things must die...and that includes the planet Earth. In the vastly distant future, under a swollen red sun, mankind still struggles and strives against each other in a world vastly different than ours, yet also alike. The "Dying Earth" subgenre--which is subtly different from the post-apocalyptic genre--has been around for over a century, but the books that give it its name came along in the 1950s in a series of fix-up novels by Jack Vance. This week we're peering into that dark and brutal future to examine this seminal work that joins together several eras of fantasy and SF. Support us on Patreon and listen to the show a week early! Julian Bernick has written across a wide variety of mediums, so Oliver discusses with him getting burnt out on novels, the Appendix N Reading List, writing for role-playing games, Jack Vance's Dying Earth series, writing lyrics as the lead singer of several bands, and more - but the focus of this interview is poetry, gothic horror, and how Julian combined the two in his most excellent book Castle Bash: A Record of the Most Unfortunate Doings at Castle Bash - As Told by an Unnamed Poet who was Never Seen Again! A narrative poem in the Romantic tradition, Castle Bash is Byronic in character, Gothic in atmosphere, Romantic in outlook and Lovecraftian in scope. When a bastard poet is given safe haven and patronage at the tenebrous Castle Bash, mystery, passion, and the forces of hell converge upon its benighted inhabitants. Andy and Chris discuss ways to get your players more invested in a roleplaying game—but not before they pursue tangents including Jack Vance’s “Dying Earth” novels and how to handle keeping-watch sequences at the table.
This Episode, Keepers Murph, Dave, & Bridgett allegedly discuss writing scenarios... and when to know when they're complete. We were derailed by Elven Orgy Candles. It's kinda hard to explain. TSR Games is back, but it isn't TSR Games, and it isn't TSR, Inc., And it isn't even the TSR from way back when. It's all a bit petty and strange and offensive, but if you want, you can read about it over at ENWorld. Goodman Games is running a Kickstarter for Jack Vance's seminal fantasy series The Dying Earth for their own Dungeon Crawl Classic RPG. This is an old school boxset that has been licensed by the Vance Estate and will include new Classes, spells, new monsters, & six new adventure modules. As of recording it is funded with 23 days left and has $170k towards their $20k goal. It is $50 for the boxset alone, or $110 for the boxset with the 6 adventure modules, which is a bit strange but they must be pretty hefty. If you have been looking at getting into Pelgrane Press's excellent King in Yellow RPG then now is the time! Episode #19 of the Ground Shots Podcast. In this episode of the Ground Shots Podcast, I chat with Hannah Smith, a writer, naturalist, hiking and climbing guide who lives seasonally working outdoor jobs or doing artist residencies in different parts of the country. I interviewed Hannah while we camped together in Big Sur, California early April 2019. Hannah and I studied papermaking and printmaking together at Penland School of Craft in North Carolina a few years ago. Since our time together at Penland, Hannah has continued to write, make artwork, and also work in wilderness settings while incorporating her creative practice in those places. In this conversation, we touch on a few big experiences she has had in the past few years working. Hannah also reads some of her poignant and thoughtful poetry commenting on a dying earth, our disconnection from the land and history and the relationship between our human body and the earth body. In this conversation, we talk about: Hannah's meditation practice in relationship to the land how 'watching' is the heart of it writing as an act of noticing and medium for connecting to the land giving care to a dying earth working as a climbing/hiking guide in Switzerland with the International Girl Scouts Hannah's job working on a storytelling project in Alaska Hannah's thoughts on making the outdoors and land accessible to all physical abilities working as a hut caretaker and naturalist in the White Mountains of New Hampshire for the AMC (Appalachian Mountain Club) Links: Hannah's writing site: https://imaginedlanguage.wordpress.com/ Hannah's Etsy page: https://www.etsy.com/shop/blueskypress Hannah on instagram: @hannahbluesky International Girl Scouts : https://www.scout.org/ Story Works Alaska : https://storyworksak.org/ Support the podcast on Patreon to contribute to our grassroots self-funding of this project.
