Welcome to Season 4! It's a new year, and Anna DeShawn is back to guide us through Queer News where race and sexuality meet politics, culture, and entertainment. While Anna takes time to reflect and recharge, we're revisiting a vital conversation with Mony Ruiz Velasco, Deputy Director of Equality Illinois. In this replay episode, Mony breaks down the actionable steps LGBTQ+ folks can take to safeguard their rights, families, and futures in an increasingly hostile environment.
This week on Queer News with Anna DeShawn she digs into the aftermath of Trump's shocking re-election and dissects its implications for the LGBTQ+ community. Anna is pleased to have Mony Ruiz Velasco, Deputy Director of Equality Illinois, join us as we explore practical steps to legally and personally protect ourselves and our loved ones. Don't miss this essential discussion on how to prepare, protect, and persist during challenging times.
Our special guest, Mony Ruiz Velasco- Deputy Director of Equality Illionios, and proud queer Latina, wife and mother who shares her extensive experience as a human rights advocate and attorney, emphasizing the importance of continued advocacy and visibility for LGBTQ+ communities. In this episode we reflect on her personal journey growing up in Mexico and South Texas, and her commitment to making it easier for future generations to find support and acceptance, as many young Latine LGBTQ+ youth don't feel safe or supported. The conversation underscores the importance of providing an inclusive environment, to feel safe in expressing their identities, especially for LGBTQ Latine youth and within our communities of color, who experience higher rates of verbal assault, physical violence, homelessness and suicidal thoughts compared to their peers. We also discuss and celebrate significant legislative victories, such as the requirement for LGBTQ history to be taught in schools, showcasing the resilience and vibrancy of the LGBTQ community, such as the Stonewall riots, the ACT UP movement and learning how to find community and resources. The significance of voting this year is not over-hyped nor should be sidelined, as over 500 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been initiated, and some advanced into law, to ban books, advance incarceration sentencing and deny access to healthcare for LGBTQ+ youth, which significantly impacts marginalized communities of color. With the stakes so high in this election year, the impact of state bills that aim to undermine our freedoms and civil rights will significantly create a humanitarian crisis over the next few years. We highlight the need for community unity and the role of truth in combating these challenges. We are so thankful to have truth sources, such as Mony and the representation of Equality Illinois on our podcast, to continue our needed education and resources to keep communities safe. What happens when a passionate broadcaster with a dream to be the next Robin Roberts transforms the media landscape for BIPOC and QTPOC creatives? Join us on "Was it Chance" as we dive into the inspiring journey of Anna DeShawn, the trailblazing force behind E3 Radio and The Qube. Discover how Anna's visionary drive and relentless pursuit of inclusivity are reshaping digital media and giving voice to those who need it most. Anna DeShawn is a celebrated multi-award and Ambie-winning podcast producer and host from Chicago, known for her pioneering work in media. She founded E3 Radio in 2009, an online station for queer music and news, and co-created The Qube, a platform for BIPOC and QTPOC creatives. Recognized by the Chicago LGBTQ Hall of Fame and Equality Illinois, Anna is a trailblazer in digital media. In our interview, Anna shares her journey from aspiring broadcaster to media innovator, discussing her passion project turned full-time gig, E3 Radio, the creation of The Qube, and her mission to amplify marginalized voices. She also reflects on the challenges of unlearning corporate behaviors, redefining success, and managing her creative flow. Check out Anna's website or Instagram. She was a “serious” broadcaster. Anna wanted to be Robin Roberts (the only Black Woman she had ever seen doing this work) She went to school to learn how to do that and ended up working on online broadcasting in the corporate space. E3 Radio was a passion project on the side. It's important to ask yourself what is the worst-case scenario. Is that really that bad? Get a copy of The Big Leap (get a copy here!) if you're looking to step into your zone of genius. It's easier for Anna to give “of” herself than to give “to” herself and there is not enough content out there at the intersection of race and sexuality. She saw a gap and decided to fill it. The QUBE is a podcast production company and a curated platform for Black and Brown podcasts. The QUBE is to podcasting what BET was to television. Balance comes because things ebb and flow - they have to. There has been real work in unraveling what “corporate” says is successful vs. what we actually know to be successful for us. Learn how to manage freedom. Anna works best when it's dark outside so she arranges her schedule to accommodate that. The biggest challenge for Anna has been “unlearning” bad corporate behavior. “What does success mean to me today?” It may change and be redefined over and over again. Anna had to learn to own failure because you can't have success without failure. There is no failure, only feedback. Now she sits on new ideas to see how they develop and transform. The Legacy Project was inspired the first time the Names Project AIDS Memorial Quilt was shown at the National March on Washington for LGBTQ Civil Rights in 1987 to answer the question “Who would remember those who came before us when we were gone?” Some 34 years later The Legacy Project under the leadership of Executive Director Victor Salvo continues to illuminate and affirm the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people to honor their experiences and accomplishments; to collect and preserve their contributions to world history and culture; to educate and inspire the public and young people, and to assure an inclusive and equitable future. Some of the activities like the Legacy Wall, a one-of-a-kind, digitally-interactive, traveling exhibit has had to be shelved, tours of the Legacy Walk have resumed with smaller groups and social distancing in place. The Legacy Project Education Initiative was launched in conjunction with partners at Illinois Safe Schools Alliance, Public Health Institute of Metropolitan Chicago, and Equality Illinois. It offers a new search portal to help teachers create a classroom experience which meets the requirements of Illinois's new Inclusive Curriculum Law

Channyn is a Human rights advocate, public speaker, community-centric leader, Director of Strategic Partnerships for Howard Brown Health Center and serves on the board, at Equality Illinois. In 2011, the Cook County Board of Corrections set out to implement new policies for transgender inmates. This coincided with Channyn being brought on as a Re-entry Specialist. While working at the jail, she started encouraging the inmates to have conversations that led them to think in ways they did not know they had the capacity. This new thinking inspired worthiness and value in their lives. She then brought in non-transgender male inmates where they experienced common ground aside from their identities and realized that there is a shared humanity amongst all of us. From this experience, she realized the way things are going to get better is if all of us come together as the sum of humanity and let go of what is blocking us.

Meet Brian Johnson, CEO of Equality Illinois, an organization focused on advancing pro LGBTQ public policy, building civic power in the LGBTQ community across the state, and getting LGBTQ people into positions of public leadership. Listen to the decisions he was grappling with in early May, six weeks into the COVID-19 Pandemic and find out how lessons in snowboarding have been relevant as he has led the organization through tremendous uncertainty.
Last month, two bills were introduced to amend Illinois' already offensive comprehensive sex ed law: SB 3788, which is sponsored by Illinois State Senators Celina Villanueva (D-Summit) and Laura Fine (D-Glenview), and HB 5012, the chief co-sponsors of whom include the Illinois House's most objectionable propagandist, State Representative Kelly Cassidy (D-Chicago) along with Representatives Ann Williams (D-Chicago) and Michelle Mussman (D-Schaumburg). Then last week, a bill that should be called the “GET OUT OF ILLINOIS SCHOOLS PRONTO” Act (SB 2762), was filed by nine Democrats and will mandate comprehensive sex ed for all grades. This bill, laughably named the "Responsible Education Adolescent and Children's Health" (REACH) Act, is heartily endorsed by Planned Parenthood of Illinois and by Illinois' premiere "LBGT" activist organization, Equality Illinois, which should tell you everything you need to know about it. While conservatives squeak “uncle” about the “social issues” from the dark recesses of their homes and churches where they hide, the jackbooted Left marches boldly forward obsessed with making the “social issues” the central plank of everything. They’re especially obsessed with transforming the hearts and minds of other people’s children using taxpayer-funded government schools in which they have an audience of cultural captives. The newest brazen effort to exploit public money in the service of propagandizing Illinois children is a creation of Equality Illinois and the Illinois Safe Schools Alliance, two of Illinois’ dubious “LBGTQQAP” activist organizations, and their bootlickers …
