Public washrooms are few and far between in Canada. When nature calls, it's often a scramble to find a coffee shop or mall restroom that's accessible. In Montreal this is certainly the case, but it wasn't always so. The city used to boast a decent network of public washrooms, constructed before the Second World War. Where did they go? And why, to this day, do we have so few public washrooms in Canada? On this week's Storylines, CBC Montreal's Ainslie MacLellan uncovers the answers. This episode is from the CBC Podcast Good Question, Montreal where every week Ainslie MacLellan takes a question about Montreal from a Montrealer, and then does whatever it takes to answer the question. It's Aardman Animation's Chop Socky Chooks (no, that's not a slur! It just Aussie for Kung-fu Chicken). The mice aren't even here to play because not a single character in this movie is a mouse. They're rats. Also there are some sewer toads. No mice. Also some French Frogs. Enjoy.
These rats aren't your average rats. They're also mice according to America. These mouse rats don't have average problems either. They're also British. God help us all.

Flushed Away is a 2006 computer-animated adventure comedy film directed by Sam Fell and David Bowers, produced by Cecil Kramer, David Sproxton, and Peter Lord, and written by Dick Clement, Ian La Frenais, Chris Lloyd, Joe Keenan and Will Davies. It was the third and final DreamWorks Animation film co-produced with Aardman Features following Chicken Run (2000) and Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005), and was the first Aardman project mostly made in CGI animation as opposed to starting with their usual stop-motion. The film stars the voices of Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet, Ian McKellen, Shane Richie, Bill Nighy, Andy Serkis and Jean Reno. In the film, a pampered pet rat named Roddy St. James (Jackman) is flushed down the toilet in his Kensington apartment by a sewer rat named Sid (Richie), and befriends a scavenger named Rita Malone (Winslet) in order to get back home while evading a sinister toad (McKellen) and his hench-rats (Nighy and Serkis). -- Audiomorphs is an Animorphs podcast which is actually not so much a podcast as a bootleg Animorphs audiobook. This simply plotted kid's movie stars Kate Winslet and Hugh Jackman as they adventure and outsmart their frog and toad nemeses. TIM SULLIVAN chats to Paul Burke about his novel THE MONK, DS George Cross, autism, the monastic life and killing your darlings.THE MONK To find a murderer, you need a motive . . .THE DETECTIVE - DS George Cross has always wondered why his mother left him when he was a child. Now she is back in his life, he suddenly has answers. But this unexpected reunion is not anything he's used to dealing with. When a disturbing case lands on his desk, he is almost thankful for the return to normality.THE QUESTION - The body of a monk is found savagely beaten to death in a woodland near Bristol. Nothing is known about Brother Dominic's past, which makes investigating difficult. How can Cross unpick a crime when they don't know anything about the victim? And why would someone want to harm a monk?THE PAST - Discovering who Brother Dominic once was only makes the picture more puzzling. He was a much-loved and respected friend, brother, son – he had no enemies. Or, at least, none that are obvious. But looking into his past reveals that he was a very wealthy man, that he sacrificed it all for his faith. For a man who has nothing, it seems strange that greed could be the motive for his murder. But greed is a sin after all...Tim Sullivan is a crime writer, screenwriter and director who has worked on major feature films such as the fourth Shrek, Flushed Away, Letters to Juliet, A Handful of Dust, Jack and Sarah, and the TV series Cold Feet. As the GameCube library dwindles 2006 and 2007 gave us many, many movie tie-ins. Happy Feet, The Ant Bully, Open Season, Barnyard, Surf's Up, Flushed Away, and Meet The Robinsons are the games Neil and Mike have the pleasure (or sometimes displeasure) of talking about on this penultimate episode. The story here is that most of these games are okay, but in reality, they probably never needed to be made in the first place. Alas this was the golden era of the movie tie-in and literally everything needed a game. There are some fun inclusions here like Surf's Up being a pretty fun and rare surfing sim on the GameCube, Barnyard turning out to be a pretty cool pseudo Open World game, and Meet the Robinsons being a Jimmy Neutron clone. All this and more on the second last episode of The GameCube Was Cool!
Composer Jason Graves has paved an incredible career path over the years, with a strong focus on scoring games. We take a walk down memory lane as Jason talks about his early years being mentored by composers like Elmer Bernstein, the ins and outs of scoring games, how working on Until Dawn with Supermassive Games led to The Dark Pictures Anthology, and how he approached the latest installment The Devil In Me. We also talk about scoring video game tie-ins to movies like Flushed Away and King Arthur, and how he always tries to get the composer of the film's blessing and insight before doing a game like that. Jason also talks about how it feels that the Dead Space remake is upon us, and how touched he is that they decided to re-use his original score in the remake. Lots of amazing insight and great stories from one of the most prominent composers in gaming! A Film.Music.Media Interview | Produced & Presented by Kaya Savas

Ladies n Genminminmin (er, min...), yes it's a 'cracking day' (see what I'm doing there?!) in 'The Clearing' as I have the great pleasure of welcoming the warm and wonderful Peter Lord, co-founder of Aardman Animations to the show!Aardman Animations is (as I'm sure you know!) the globally renowned 4 times Academy Award Winning Clay Animated & Short Films company based in Bristol."Nice Cheese Gromit!"4 Academy awards, The Freedom of the City of Bristol and a GOLD Blue Peter Badge to his name, in the bag and in the Clearing! Peter Lord also created and gifted "Morph" to the world; Morph being the wonderful plasticine comedy sidekick to Tony Hart and the iconic children's TV programme "Vision On" back in the day, that formed part of the fabric of my (and our) childhoods!Peter also Directed one of my very very favourite Aardman Films "Chicken Run", with "Chicken Run 2" being in production as we speak.Hurrah!More about Peter Lord:Born in Bristol, if Peter Lord had taken the Van Gogh advice, which he quotes, he might now be playing cricket. Or the piano. Instead he followed his father's suggestion and made the most of whatever came his way. Aged 12, on his first day at school in Woking, he took the only desk left. This placed him next to a lad known there as ‘Sproxton D A.' (none other than Aardman Animations co-founder Dave Sproxton!)45+ years later these two are still working together. What started as a ‘hobby for a dreary afternoon' is now creating career opportunities for literally hundreds of others at Aardman Animations. ‘Pete and Dave' were the co-founders of this extraordinarily successful creative enterprise, which now belongs to its staff - a bit like the John Lewis model but Aardman's models are much more famous on a worldwide basis. They include the amazing Morph, Chas and many others, like "Shaun the Sheep"; "Wallace and Gromit"; "Chicken Run"; "Flushed Away" to name but some of an absolutely extraordinary canon of work on which we've all brought our children up (and ourselves!) It all started with ordinary plasticine and Peter still remembers his artist mother making a plasticine loaf for him when he was aged around 4. Then cutting it into slices! At age 10, he credits his teacher in his School for Gifted Children in Australia in sharing his enthusiasm for Ogden Nash, Ray Bradbury and Marcel Marceau. That enthusiasm inspired him, more than the poetry or the prose or the mime. It kept him going through the ‘long days and long nights' of building an international business in animation. Good decisions, good timing, good luck and hard work - simple as that, apparently! Peter is clear: “There are no secrets. Stop-motion is magic!” The work-side of Peter Lord's career is already well documented. As a delightful bonus, the personal side of his life is gently revealed here - like his love for wet walnuts and bagpipe music! Like his questionable but credible claim to being the first (or at least among the front runners) ever to publish work by the teenage Kazou Ishiguro, now Sir Kazou Ishiguro, the Nobel Prizewinning writer responsible for a variety of masterpieces from ‘Remains of the Day' to the new awards-contender ‘Living'', starring Bill Nighy. Peter Lord's own awards include an Oscar or two, Freedom of the City of Bristol and the presentation of a Blue Peter Gold Badge, which he found “ridiculously pleasing.” He describes the world of animation as an ‘esoteric community, low on ego, where drawing is a great way of thinking'. In this curious community, Peter Lord is a shining example of delightful, understated talent. Please lend him your ears!
Hosted by Picturehouse's very own Sam Clements, The Love Of Cinema podcast is proudly supported by Kia. Sam is joined by writer-director Chris Butler from Laika Studios to discuss the 10th anniversary re-release of ParaNorman. As a co-writer of Coraline and the co-director of Flushed Away respectively, Chris Butler and Sam Fell had just the credentials to create arguably the most innovative 3D animation to date. Employing a unique hybrid of CGI and stop-motion technology, ParaNorman tells of a town besieged by rudely awakened and rather irate zombies. The town's only hope of salvation is Norman, a boy blessed with the ability to understand the zombies' language (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee, in a role that could hardly be more different from his character in The Road). As he battles with ghosts, witches and moronic adults as well as the living dead, Norman's supernatural powers are entertainingly stretched to their limits, and the film's breathtaking pace is further enhanced by stellar voicing from the likes of John Goodman, Elaine Stritch and Casey Affleck. Say what you will about stop motion animation, there's an undeniable degree of difficulty associated with it that makes it a little more impressive than CGI emulating the clay sculpture style. This is the core hubris of the "Wallace and Gromit " people hooking up with Dreamworks to make "Flushed Away", a story about a posh surface rat getting flushed down the toilet to fight a frog king. And then they made a game about it. And then we mostly talked about Jackass, and a bizarre YouTube channel called "Max TV" (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCX3tM-sW2NpWvy-xpmicGRA/featured).

Editor - John Venzon ACE THE BAD GUYS editor, John Venzon ACE started his career off assisting in the cutting rooms of such memorable films as NATURAL BORN KILLERS (1994), TWISTER (1996), FIGHT CLUB (1999) and PANIC ROOM (2002). So, it's fair to say he certainly knows his way around a live action feature. But his career as a lead editor has been highlighted with animated features like SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER & UNCUT (1999), SHARK TALE (2004), FLUSHED AWAY (2006), STORKS (2016) and THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE (2017). The result is an editor who is a great resource to talk to about working as an editor in animation and how that contrasts and compares with editing live action. THE BAD GUYS tells the story of the notorious criminal gang of Mr. Wolf, Mr. Snake, Mr. Piranha, Mr. Shark and Ms. Tarantula, who, after a lifetime of legendary heists, are finally caught. To avoid a prison sentence, the animal outlaws must pull off their most challenging con yet -- becoming model citizens. Under the tutelage of their mentor, Professor Marmalade, the dubious gang sets out to fool the world that they're turning good. Editing THE BAD GUYS In our discussion with THE BAD GUYS editor, John Venzon ACE we talk about: The editorial phases of animated features How animated features endured the lockdowns and remote editing requirements Refining the tone and logic of a film so that audiences of all ages can understand and enjoy it The influence of OCEAN'S ELEVEN and OUT OF SIGHT Editors turned voice actors The Credits Get your free 100GB of media transfer at MASV Visit ExtremeMusic for all your production audio needs See which model of Avid Media Composer is right for you Subscribe to The Rough Cut podcast and never miss an episode Visit The Rough Cut on YouTube
