It's Friday, December 27th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. Filling in for Adam McManus, I'm Ean Leppin. Ministry distributes Bibles in Ukraine Reported by the Christian Post, a ministry based in Texas is printing and distributing Bibles and other gospel-centered materials through a vast network of churches and Christian organizations to Eastern Europe. The organization is the Eastern European Mission, or the EEM. This year, the EEM had a goal to distribute 970,000 Bibles and other Christian-based materials in over 30 countries in total and in 20 different languages.  This includes the war-torn country of Ukraine. In fact, requests for materials have increased. Vice President of the EEM, Dirk Smith, says, “God uses evil, and this war is definitely not from a good place…” However, nonbelievers are looking at the believers and wanting to know how they are handling these terrible circumstances. Believers are needing more material to share Christ in these trying times. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, 6.8 million refugees from Ukraine are recorded globally, and nearly 4 million people are displaced in Ukraine as of November. Romans 10:14-15: How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” Canadian pastor sentenced on December 23 A pastor named Derek Reimer of Mission 7 Ministries in Calgary appeared in court for sentencing back on November 27 after being found guilty in August of criminal harassment and 4 counts of breaching bail conditions—all of this stemming from a conversation with a service delivery manager of a public library. According to Rebel News.com, Pastor Reimer approached the manager at Saddletowne Public Library to ask why the library was hosting events where adults dressed in drag and read books to children, often encouraging the children's exploration of sexual identity and promoting non-traditional values. The manager refused to engage in the conversation and asked Reimer to leave, which he did, but did comment that he would likely return to protest. Reimer also posted about this interaction on his social media, voicing his disapproval. Even though the manager, Shannon Slater, never submitted a victim impact statement to the Canadian Court, Pastor Reimer was still convicted on Dec 23rd. Justice Molle delivered his sentence, including, among other things, a $500 fine, 12 months of house arrest, and 2 years of probation. During his sentence, he must also write an apology letter to the manager Shannon Slater, be banned within 300 meters of a public library on days with a scheduled Reading with Royalty event, and is even prohibited from “entertaining friends at his personal home.” See the full list of his required punishment in his sentencing in the link in our transcript at TheWorldview.com. Hebrews 10:22-23: Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.” Chaos at airport in Phoenix Chaos erupted the day after Christmas at the Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix. The Associated Press reports that around 9:45pm on Dec 26th, a group of people at an airport restaurant had a disagreement that escalated to the point that one man pulled out a gun and another man pulled out a knife. An adult female and 2 males were shot, leaving the female with life-threatening injuries. The two men were in stable condition, including another man with a stab wound. Two hours later, in an unrelated incident, another man showed up with a bag full of guns after he had received a text saying there was an active shooter at the airport. He began to distribute guns to other people at the airport before he was stopped by a police officer. The man struggled with the officer and had to be detained. Phoenix police are still investigating. Number 3: The opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris back in July. Many notable people responded, including Harrison Butker of the Kansas City Chiefs, Actress Candace Cameron Bure, and Pastor Greg Laurie. Franklin Graham commented, “Even more than being disrespectful to Christians, I would be concerned about being disrespectful to God. His word tells us, ‘Be not deceived, God is not mocked.' It would be nice if President Biden, a Catholic, would issue a statement condemning this. Whether you're Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican or Protestant, it is offensive." Number 2: Two high-profile baptisms made news this year of actors Russell Brand and Denzel Washington. Brand has been very vocal about his conversion and continues to speak out about his experience with the Lord and his spiritual journey on social media. Denzel Washington told Esquire magazine “If God can do this for me, there's nothing He can't do for you. The sky literally is the limit and there's no limit to the sky.” When asked if he was unafraid to discuss his faith in the light of what Hollywood might think he simply replied, “I don't care what anyone thinks … I'm free now.” Number 1 was the surprising passing of Christian singer Mandisa on April 18th at the age of 47. Mandisa was very open about her struggles with depression and anxiety and how her faith helped her overcome those difficulties. Her rise to fame started on the reality show American Idol in 2006. Her album Overcomer, released in 2013, won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album. During her career, she sold 1.6 million albums. One of her favorite passages was Psalm 13. Verses 5 and 6 say, “But I have trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, because He has dealt bountifully with me.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Friday, December 27th, in the year of our Lord 2024. Season Three. Episode Two. In this episode, hosts Dirk and Brooke talk with F. LaGard Smith about his extensive work as an author and The Daily Bible, an essential resource for EEM.  F. LaGard Smith was born in 1944 in Houston, Texas, thereafter living in Shawnee and Tulsa, Oklahoma, Lancaster, Texas, and Birmingham, Alabama, before heading off to college at Florida College, graduating from Willamette University with both an undergraduate and law degree. Smith was a District Attorney for Malheur County, Oregon for three years, served as an administrator for the Oregon State Bar in Portland for a year, then spent 27 years teaching at Pepperdine University School of Law in Malibu, California, focusing on Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Trial Practice, and Law and Morality. For five years, Smith was Scholar in Residence for Christian Studies at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee, then taught for two years at Liberty University School of Law and for four years at Faulkner University's Jones School of Law in Montgomery, Alabama, before retiring to write full time. Smith has written some 35 books--legal, social, doctrinal, and devotional. He is most widely known as the compiler and narrator of "The Daily Bible" (the NIV and NLT in chronological order). He and his wife Ruth live in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and, for several months a year, at their cottage in the English Cotswolds, where he does much of his writing. Season Two. Episode Eight. From Russia With Love. Hosts Dirk and Brooke talk with Oleg Yakimenko about his gospel ministry in Russia and his ongoing work with EEM.  Oleg joined EEM in 2013 as the National Coordinator for Russia and Belarus. Now, Oleg coordinates the EEM work in Russia and the countries of Central Asia and Transcaucasia. He has Master's degrees in Teaching and Translation of English and German Languages and in New Testament Theology. Oleg obeyed the Gospel in 1993 and is passionate about spreading God's Word. In 1997, Oleg moved from Eastern Ukraine to Russia and worked as an Evangelist with the local church of Christ in St. Petersburg. Season Two. Episode Seven. Mission For Macedonian Revival. Hosts Dirk and Brooke reconnect with Nikola Galevski after meeting him recently on an EEM trip to North Macedonia.  Nikola Galevski was born and raised in Skopje, Macedonia. Coming from a traditional Orthodox family, his faith was ignited in his youth through the witness of the local Evangelical Church in Skopje and with a special gift of God's Word. These events in his life inspired a life-long mission to share God's love with as many as possible. After finishing a BA in Art History and Archaeology, together with his wife Anet (who died from cancer in 2021), they both pursued master theological and ministry preparation studies at Regent College in Vancouver, Canada, under the mentorship of Dr. Gordon Fee and Dr. Rikki E. Watts. Upon graduation, Anet and Nikola returned to Macedonia in 2005 to lead the Macedonian IFES/IVCF, start their second church plant, and initiate numerous evangelistic, outreach, educational, publishing, and music projects. Nikola and Anet have one daughter, Giselle-Maria Galevska. Apart from being a pastor of Evangelical Church Soulcraft, Nikola Galevski is a university evangelist, and lecturer in biblical studies, preaching, mission, and visual arts in North Macedonia and internationally. In this episode, they sat down again with Dasha Novikova to get further Ukraine Updates. Dasha joined EEM in 2011 as the National Coordinator for Ukraine and now serves as EEM's National Director in Ukraine. Contributor: Nicholas Tsipis, MD Educational Pearls: What study was Dr. Tsipis talking about? In December of 2022, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) put out a study titled “Diagnostic Errors in the Emergency Department: A Systematic Review.” This study triggered many news stories from prominent outlets with headlines such as, “More than 7 million incorrect diagnoses made in US emergency rooms every year, government report finds,” from CNN, and “E.R. Doctors Misdiagnose Patients With Unusual Symptoms,” from the New York Times. What was the response? Matt Bivens, MD from Emergency Medicine News responded to the original study in an article titled, “AHRQ Errors Report was ‘Outright Unconscionable.'” Dr. Bivens points out that AHRQ's biggest claims – including that 5.7% of patients are misdiagnosed in the ED and 2.0% suffer an adverse event as a result – were based only on three small studies out of Canada, Spain, and Switzerland (combined n=1,758). Spain and Switzerland did not have emergency medicine residency-trained physicians at the time of the studies. The Swiss study looked at when the diagnosis changed significantly between admittance and discharge to which Bivens responded, “Are we describing errors in this study or just an ongoing collaborative process?” The Canadian study looked at 503 high-acuity patients of which one died of a missed aortic dissection. Bivens notes that this is too small of sample size to be generalized to the American ER population which includes a mix of low and high acuity. Moral of the story? Mistakes do happen in the ED and they do negatively impact patients but be careful in how you interpret studies and news articles that report on them. Season Two. Episode Four. Gospel For Millions In Greece. Hosts Dirk and Brooke talk with Johnathan Macris. Johnathan Macris is president of Hellenic Ministries (formerly Hellenic Missionary Union) and the oldest child of well-known Greek evangelical missionaries, Costas and Alky Macris. Johnathan graduated from Moody Bible Institute in 1985 and then returned to Greece to serve his mandatory year in the Greek Army. He and his wife, Miriam, married in 1987 and have five children: Justin, Natassa, Kyle, Karsten and Jorryn. Johnathan eventually went on to complete ministerial studies and was ordained as a minister of the Gospel in 1994 through the Wheaton Bible Church. Since the beginning of Hellenic Ministries in 1980, Johnathan has been vitally involved in the mission's emphasis of evangelism and church planting, discipleship and missions. In his leadership capacity, over the years, his responsibilities have included Personnel Manager, Summer Evangelistic Campaign Director/Coordinator, Member of both Greek and American Boards and de facto Administrator of the daily affairs of the Mission. He assumed the Boards designation of president in 2001. While the burden for Evangelism and Discipleship continues to mark Hellenic Ministries' priorities, Johnathan is emphasizing the need for the ministry to fulfill its role and call to raise up, equip and send Greek workers into the harvest field of world missions.
