In this episode of Influenced, we follow the career of Glam icons T. Rex. Founded in London as an acoustic duo by Frontman Marc Bolan, the band was initially inspired by the likes of the psychedelic hippies Donovan. After a few unsuccessful releases as a duo, Marc decided to regroup the band as a more traditional rock band and with the release of albums like Electric Warrior and hits like "Get it On" the band shot to the top of the European charts in a way that rivaled the Beatles. Becoming immediately influential with artists like David Bowie citing them as a massive contributor on his art, T. Rex quickly become one of the mainstays in rock and roll influence. They continue to massively inspire the current run of musicians with artists like Ty Segall, Paul Weller, Trent Reznor and the Pixies all citing the band as huge for them personally. Listen to this episode as we go deep on this incredible and groovy band.

On this week's episode, its another “Listener Pick,” the band and LP that gave the world Glam Rock: 1971's Electric Warrior, the second album by T. Rex. Marc Bolan, T-Rex's charismatic front man played a pivotal role in early 70's British rock. Forming the folk-rock duo/band Tyrannosaurus Rex, Bolan would embrace the shortened moniker “T. Rex” at the dawn of the 1970's, as well as a more flamboyant look, attitude, and sound, essentially ushering in the Glam Rock era. Bolan and T. Rex became huge in the UK, even rivaling the Beatles in popularity.Considered by many to be the first true Glam Rock record, Electric Warrior is the culmination of everything Bolan wanted to accomplish with T. Rex. and is lauded as one of the most iconic and influential albums of all time.
Marc Bolan went out like a Roman candle or a speed bump or in some such way an incandescent rock star dies at twenty-nine, and left in his wake a glitterbomb of glam stardust and swagger a mile wide and a few albums deep. It's hard to overstate his impact: T Rex enjoyed a run from 1970-73 where they charted like the Fab Four. Eleven singles in the UK top ten, among them 'Get It On,' cornerstone of Electric Warrior, touchstone of myriad covers since.Weird stories abound: Bolan and Bowie once painted their shared manager's walls and scavenged outfits from dustbins together, and years later Bolan grabbed camp and androgyny and sexy sheen by the scruff of the neck. It's very easy to get this kind of thing wrong, but there is something no doubt fundamental at play here. It is, as Ryan suggests, both 'dirty and sweet.' The flashpoint of an attitude.Bolan was a guy that couldn't drive but owned several cars and died in one. Life and death are funny sometimes. But in the time we're here, there's still time to start something. Something that echoes and reverbs through the ages.(Recorded May 30, 2022)In This Episode:A Few Minutes With:Roger Miller - Dang MeA Current Affair:NKTOB (Feat. Part 2 of Electric Warrior
In episode number 97 of The Classic Rock Album-By-Album Podcast, hosts Chris Karson and guest host Devin Doyle set out to go through early glam rock staple Electric Warrior by T-Rex. Has glam rock aged well to old ears and young? Does Marc Bolan somehow manage to see above the drum riser and record a classic album? And just how does the Willys Motor Corporation fit in to all of this? Check it out this time on The Classic Rock Album-By-Album Podcast!
You may not instantly recognise the name Tony Newman but he's a British drummer with a huge pedigree; perhaps best known for his work with the legendary '70s band T.Rex. Tony started his music career in the early 1960s, playing with various bands in London. He quickly gained a reputation as a versatile and talented drummer, and in 1969 he was asked to join T.Rex, which was then led by the iconic glam rock musician Marc Bolan. T.Rex's music was known for its catchy melodies, distorted guitar riffs, and whimsical lyrics that often drew on fantasy and mythology. Bolan's charismatic stage presence and flamboyant fashion sense, which included glittery costumes and feather boas, helped to make the band one of the defining acts of the glam rock movement. Newman played on T.Rex's classic albums "Electric Warrior" and "The Slider," which are considered to be some of the greatest albums of the glam rock era. He was known for his dynamic, hard-hitting drumming style, which helped to drive the band's energetic sound. After leaving T.Rex in 1973, Newman continued to work as a session musician, playing with a wide range of artists including David Bowie, Jeff Beck, and Donovan. He also played with the power pop band the Rubinoos in the 1980s, and with the blues rock band the Animals in the 1990s. In addition to his work as a musician, Newman also became a successful music producer and engineer, working with artists such as Rory Gallagher and the Jam. Today, Tony Newman is living in Las Vegas. He is still active in the music industry, and continues to perform and record with a variety of artists. He is considered to be one of the most respected and influential drummers of the glam rock era, and his contributions to the music of T.Rex and other bands continue to be celebrated by fans and musicians alike. Tony joins us this week to recount some of the highs and lows of his music career and tells us how he's more surprised than anyone that he managed to survive the excesses associated with the most outrageous period in rock and roll history. "The Dark Side of the Moon" fehlt in quasi keiner der wichtigen Alben-Bestenlisten. __________ Über diese Songs vom Album “The Dark Side of the Moon” wird im Podcast gesprochen 02:23 Mins – „Money“ 13:50 Mins – „Us and Them“ 22:24 Mins – „Any Colour You Like“ 24:48 Mins – „Brain Damage“ 30:24 Mins – „Eclipse“ __________ Shownotes: Zur Debatte um Roger Waters: https://www.deutschlandfunk.de/roger-waters-konzertabsage-frankfurt-bds-antisemitismus-100.htmlhttps://www.ndr.de/kultur/musik/pop/Antisemitische-Aussagen-Roger-Waters-in-Hamburg,waters120.htmlhttps://www.hessenschau.de/kultur/frankfurt-konzert-roger-waters-wehrt-sich-gegen-geplante-absage-v2,roger-waters-wehrt-sich-100.htmlhttps://www.deutschlandfunkkultur.de/roger-waters-antisemitismus-klage-meinungsfreiheit-kunstfreiheit-100.htmlhttps://www.rollingstone.de/roger-waters-frankfurt-draengt-auf-konzert-absage-2544783/ Das offizielle Buch zum 50. Alice Cooper - a story of intrigue, drugs and great stage shows. While influencing The Sex Pistols, Kiss, Bowie, the movie, “A Clockwork Orange” and Australia's Jimmy and the Boys, Alice Cooper changed from a band to an individual, and left an enormous legacy in today's rock world. This week's “Before You Die” album is Marc Bolan's “Electric Warrior”, which didn't impress the boys at all, despite Bolan's reputation, some great singles and production by Tony Visconti.

"The album that essentially kick-started the U.K. glam rock craze, Electric Warrior completes T. Rex's transformation from hippie folk-rockers into flamboyant avatars of trashy rock & roll. There are a few vestiges of those early days remaining in the acoustic-driven ballads, but Electric Warrior spends most of its time in a swinging, hip-shaking groove powered by Marc Bolan's warm electric guitar. The music recalls not just the catchy simplicity of early rock & roll, but also the implicit sexuality -- except that here, Bolan gleefully hauls it to the surface, singing out loud what was once only communicated through the shimmying beat. He takes obvious delight in turning teenage bubblegum rock into campy sleaze, not to mention filling it with pseudo-psychedelic hippie poetry. In fact, Bolan sounds just as obsessed with the heavens as he does with sex, whether he's singing about spiritual mysticism or begging a flying saucer to take him away. It's all done with the same theatrical flair, but Tony Visconti's spacious, echoing production makes it surprisingly convincing. Still, the real reason Electric Warrior stands the test of time so well -- despite its intended disposability -- is that it revels so freely in its own absurdity and willful lack of substance. Not taking himself at all seriously, Bolan is free to pursue whatever silly wordplay, cosmic fantasies, or non sequitur imagery he feels like; his abandonment of any pretense to art becomes, ironically, a statement in itself. Bolan's lack of pomposity, back-to-basics songwriting, and elaborate theatrics went on to influence everything from hard rock to punk to new wave. But in the end, it's that sense of playfulness, combined with a raft of irresistible hooks, that keeps Electric Warrior such an infectious, invigorating listen today." - Steve Huey, All MusicSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/polyphonic-press1229/donations

Of all the people I wanted to interview for this podcast, Tony Visconti was my number one choice. He has produced 12 of my top 20 all-time favourite albums, and he is simply one of the greatest producers of all time. Bowie, Bolan, Sparks, Paul McCartney, The Move, Iggy Pop, Kaiser Chiefs, Thin Lizzy, Holy Holy, Morrissey, Prefab Sprout, Angelique Kidjo... the list goes on and on... Then there's the albums... Young Americans, Diamond Dogs, Electric Warrior, Low, Heroes, Blackstar, The Idiot, Lodger, Scary Monsters etc etc The man is a stone-cold, one of a kind, musical hero - my career would probably never have happened without his music. Ladies and Gentlemen, kneel and pay homage to Anthony Visconti... there can be only one...

El glam rock, un estilo visual marcado por estéticas andróginas y canciones pegadizas, tuvo a Marc Bolan como estandarte de una época, con himnos como "Get it on" que se transformarían en clásicos.
Hace medio siglo... 12.30.20 - Day 3/13 of the White Wizard wavespell * Rhythmic Moon 18 The White Wizard wavespell is a journey through enchantment. Always remind myself that in the fairytale and mythology version of this, there are plenty of dark forces in the forest doing ill. So we can patiently attend to the White Wizard passage knowing we'll meet bad players, or feel the energy surround of malevolence, while always saved, sent along by benevolent guides we meet on the way - especially when the obstacles feel too challenging, or the path too tangled.

Plata þáttarins sem við heyrum amk. þrjú lög af er Electric Warrior með hljómsveit Marc?s Bolan - T-Rex sem var á toppnum á breska listanum í þessari viku árið 1971. Platan kom út 24. September sama ár. Electric Worrior er sjötta plata T. Rex, en fyrsta platan kom út undir nafninu Tyrannosaurus Rex árið 1968 og það gerðu þrjár næstu plötur líka. Á plötunni á undan Electric Worrior var nafninu breytt í T.Rex. Tónlistarlega er Electric Worrior aðeins frábrugðin plötunum á undan, minna folk-popp og meira rokk. Rokk T.Rex var kallað Glam-rokk. Electric Worrior hefur að geyma eina lag Marc Bolan sem varð vinsælt í Bandaríkjunum, en það er lagið Get it on sem var kallað Bang a gong (get it on) í Ameríkunni.

A tribute album is a way for musicians to pay homage to an artist they love. While not all of them are good, the great ones let the music shine through. The Randomizer doled out an episode well-suited for the pandemic in which we find ourselves with this week’s installment, “Retro” (S10E5). Martin Mull guest stars as a quack doc who pied pipes his followers to their AIDS-denying deaths. Along their dimwitted death march, we learn about a Gambian dictator who “cured” HIV/AIDS with a secret blend of herbs, revel in dunking on Christian Scientists, and explore how to avoid getting toxoplasmosis, all while dodging the cries of infants contained both within this episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and in real life. Music: Divorcio Suave - “Munchy Business” 10:19 - T. Rex - “Jeepster” from Electric Warrior (1971) 28:56 - Guelewar - “Balla Jigi” from Halleli N’Dakarou (Live 1982 at Kaolack Canari Club, Senegal) (2011) 39:18 - Iggy Pop - “Lust for Life” from Lust for Life (1977) 45:43 - Grouper - “Holding” from Ruins (2014) 1:03:30 - Pat Benatar - “Invincible” from Seven the Hard Way (1985) Next Week’s Episode: Season 19, Episode 14 “Chasing Demons”
My guest in this episode is Irishman Stephen McNulty. Stephen grew up near Dungannon where his piano teacher Victor was an early musical influence introducing him to the delights of Marc Bolan, T.Rex and Electric Warrior at a tender age . That early interest in music was cemented on June 22nd, 1992 when Stephen's first real gig involved a trip to Belfast to see Nirvana supported by Teenage Fanclub and The Breeders at The King's Hall. After that there was no turning back. In 2005 Stephen moved to Australia , initially for a year, but as is so often the case fifteen years later he is not only still there living in a beautiful part of Sydney, with his wife of 10 years Melissa and their two children Finbar (8) and Ailish (5) but they are Australian citizens In the past guests have tinkered with the format but Stephen came up with a pretty significant change and one that I am happy to say I loved. Stephen does choose a song from each decade of his life, but all his choices are from Australian bands and it absolutely works. Stephen's love of not just Australian music but all music comes across loud and clear and it’s no surprise that the Playlist runs to over 60 songs. In amongst some great music chat and stories we also touch on some big topics including the troubles in Ireland, Alzheimer's, the environment, treatment of indigenous Australians and the importance of protest songs, so hopefully something for everyone! You can listen to the Playlist from this episode, which includes Stephen’s selections along with a song from every artist mentioned by cutting and pasting this link into your browser: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2m5xLeR2Ywe3KzIRDtDLeo?si=kSUxzJfbTYmQ_4JFwfxkXQ
Buoyed by two U.K. number one singles in "Telegram Sam" and "Metal Guru," The Slider became T. Rex's most popular record on both sides of the Atlantic, despite the fact that it produced no hits in the U.S. The Slider essentially replicates all the virtues of Electric Warrior, crammed with effortless hooks and trashy fun.

The most iconic band of the U.K. glam rock scene of the '70s, T. Rex were the creation of Marc Bolan, who started out as a cheerfully addled acolyte of psychedelia and folk-rock until he turned to swaggering rock & roll with boogie rhythm and a tricked-up fashion sense. For a couple years, T. Rex were the biggest band in England and a potent cult item in the United States. - Artist Biography by Mark Deming . This album defined many of our parties and still does today. Such a great time.

How far is too far? Is it when you break rules, set trends, and destroy the notion of what music is perceived to be? Launching the careers of countless acolytes through tireless reinvention, and all the while staying so far ahead of the curve; that only legends are heard of the ground he broke in the not so distance past. We raise the aforementioned question because on this episode we shine a light on the electrical excess of Miles Davis back in the 70’s, and massive influence of creativity it yields. Time constraints are demolished, new sounds are invented and all the while sounding like no other before or since. You may require an oxygen mask as we explore the dizzying heights of musical space exploration from a true musical genius right here on Euphoric Musicality Radio.
