Alien Covenant was sort of damned from the beginning. As a direct sequel to the divisive Prometheus, it was continuing a story half the audience had no desire to see. Moreover, they probably also had zero interest in learning where the Xenomorphs came from. Those are significant hurdles when that is exactly what the movie is about. Sorry, Sir Ridley. Thus, like its predecessor, your mileage on Alien Covenant will vary. In the case of this podcast, it is near polar opposites. Alien Covenant may center on a ship of colonists on course for a new home, but it is David's story. Yes, that David. The android we last saw as a head without a body. It is his continued tinkering with the black goo that finally creates the Xenomorph as we first saw it. Hence, why this movie saw Prometheus' divisiveness and said, "Hold my beer." Did we actually need an origin story for the slimy, feral aliens who thrive on violence and mayhem? Well, we got one. And to that question, it seems the general audience felt they did not. On a budget estimated to be just over $100 million, Alien Covenant grossed just $240.9 million worldwide. Now, sit back, modify your DNA with a Cosmic Mutant IPA from Oskar Blues, and keep your nose out of that egg! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Chumpzilla, Capt. Cash, and Bling Blake are inhaling alien spores to see who experiences the most gnarly death! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – The path to paradise begins in hell! (00:00) Lingering Questions – With Ridley Scott's conclusion shelved, we debate whether he should've gotten to finish it. (47:56) The "Paradise Lost" Trivia Challenge – The Double Turn Podcast gets double-crossed by the David/Walter switch, and then I challenge the field to trivia about the movie. (1:17:08) Recommendations – We offer our picks for the week and next up: We kick off "Hops and Franchise Entry Flops," with the painfully bad Robocop 3! Although his very first cow got torpedoed by some Italians, David speaks of an early passion for the Charolais breed and buying a bull at auction for a colossal sum at the time! BIO: David Walter is an author, speaker, and sales trainer. His claim to fame came from a cold-calling hot streak, during which he set 15 appointments a day for six months straight. STORY: David paid $10,000 and signed the rights to his manuscript to a famous publisher he believed would turn his book into a bestseller. The publisher was a fraud who never delivered any of the things he promised David. LEARNING: Think about your marketing before you even start writing your book. Look for the right person to edit your book.   “It's one thing to be an author, but you also got to know how to market your book.”David Walter  Guest profilehttps://www.linkedin.com/in/david-walter-cold-calling-telemarketing-sales/ (David Walter) is an author, speaker, and sales trainer. His claim to fame came from a cold-calling hot streak, during which he set 15 appointments a day for six months straight. He later ran a prospecting call center, helping companies make millions. He is a contributing writer to Entrepreneur magazine. His book, https://milliondollarrebuttal.com/free-book (Million Dollar Rebuttal), is a #1 bestseller on Amazon. Worst investment everDavid put all his faith and hope in a publisher that he believed would market his book. He invested $10,000 into the company, thinking he was on his way to fame and fortune being an author. He even signed off the rights of his manuscripts to the company. A few months in, and everything started going wrong. The company wasn't editing the book, and the book cover they gave him was terrible. Then the company was indicted for fraud and ended up in court holding up David's manuscript in the process. The company never delivered any of the things they promised David. Lessons learnedFirst, check the Better Business Bureau rating of anybody that you want to work with before you do. Don't look for a panacea to do it at all. Instead, specialize. If you want a book cover design, go with somebody who specializes in book covers and when it comes to editing, find a good editor for the book. When you're feeling vulnerable and desperate, slow down and take it all step by step. Actionable adviceThink about your marketing before you even ever write your book. Sonatine (1905)                                                                         Maurice Ravel (1875-1937)Arranged for oboe and piano by David Walter 1.    Modéré (moderate)2.    Mouvement de menuet (Minuet tempo)3.    Animé (animated) Ravel opens each movement of his Sonatine with a two-note interval that establishes a precise mood with its color and rhythm. The first movement, marked Modéré, opens with a tentative-sounding descending fourth – F# to C#. This is an emotionally laden interval for Ravel. For example, in his opera “L'enfant et les sortilêges” (“The child and the magic spells”), he sets the word “maman” to this interval as a frightened child cries out for his mother. The second movement, a minuet, opens with a stable, decisive interval, a rising fifth. The minuet form hints of a magnificently costumed ball in a palace long forgotten, like Ravel's earlier “Pavane for a Dead Princess.”The final movement, marked Animé and then Agité, opens with the original notes of the first movement, but in reverse order: a rising fourth, C# to F#. It is a questing rising fourth, leaping forward. Between forays into mysterious realms, the melody rocks indecisively, its meter stretching into four- and five-note bar lengths. A second version of the two-note motto emerges, now back in its original shape as a falling fourth.

Today's compositions have been arranged for oboe d'amore and piano. Most were composed for other instruments, but Debussy designated oboe d'amore (on the top staff of the score!) in his orchestration of “Gigues” for Images for Orchestra. The modern oboe d'amore is a slightly larger and lower-pitched version of the modern oboe, with a globular bell. These differences from the standard oboe lend it a mellower, less edgy tone that blends nicely with other instruments and with the human voice. Its native pitch of “A” below middle “C” places it in the sweet spot among melody instruments.  1      “Andante sostenuto” (originally for solo piano) from Songs Without Words          by Felix Mendelssohn (Germany, 1809-1847)2      “Adagio” (originally for solo piano) from Songs Without Words3      “Salut d'Amour” by Edward Elgar (England, 1857-1934) (originally for violin          and piano)4      “Arietta” by S. I started my sales career cold calling, but in my mind, doing cold calls is not modern selling. It's just basic selling. However, I've decided to bring in some experts to share some cold calling tips with the listeners of the Modern Selling Podcast. Subscribe to Modern Selling on the App of Your Choice! Recently, I had Joe Pici talk about how to write a successful cold calling script, and in this episode, my guest is none other than David Walter. David's claim to fame is setting 15 appointments every day for six months while working at a call center. He ran his own call center for 13 years and has now written a # 1 Best Selling book, The Million Dollar Rebuttal: Cold Calling is Not a Numbers Game! Listen to this episode to learn how your sales team can start making more successful cold calls. 3 Cold Calling Tips to Make 15 Appointments a Day David told me about a time when he had a lot of financial pressure. He got a sales job cold calling B2B companies and he needed to make 10 or more appointments to earn commissions.  The problem was that not one sales rep in the company was making more than two appointments per day. He realized he needed to make 15 appointments to earn the kind of money he needed. So, inspired by Zig Ziglar’s book See you at the Top, David began telling his reflection in the mirror every day, “I’m going to set 15 appointments.” Eventually, that started to happen and he set over 1,800 appointments in six months. Here are David’s top cold calling tips. 1. Cold Call with a Winning Mindset According to David, it all starts with your mindset. “When I set that goal, my subconscious mind started figuring out all the steps I would have to go through,” David says. “Anything's possible. That was my attitude. I started with the end in mind, and the idea that if I start with a ‘yes’ at the end, what would I have to say to get every person back to that ‘yes’?” 2. Eliminate objections with the right questions One of the obstacles David encountered was that although he was getting through the gatekeepers and talking to the right people, most calls would end up with the same answer: “send me more information.” But as every sales professional knows, “send me more information” is just a way for buyers to brush you off. David got frustrated by that response and realized he needed a rebuttal to that objection. Instead of arguing with them, he would aggressively agree. The million dollar rebuttal starts with agreeing with the prospect. Contrary to what most sales reps are taught to do, David would answer excitedly, “I would love to send you some information.” Such a response would throw people off. He would then ask, “What kind of information do you want? Customer testimonials, a brochure? Do you want the price?” “It's like throwing that red meat bait, they go for it.” David says. “What prospect wouldn’t want to hear the price before they ever have to deal with the salesman?” The psychological principle here is to get them to agree with what the sellers are saying, to get a “yes.” But then David would try to talk them out of it and say, “I don’t really think you want the price. Do you really want it?” This cold calling tip helped David disarm prospects who didn’t want to talk to him, and actually start a conversation about their needs. Listen to the episode to discover the questions David asks during his cold calls. 3. Create a need for your potential client Conventional sales wisdom says you need to find a prospect with a real problem or need to be able to sell your solution to them. But the first thing most prospects say after hearing a sales pitch from a salesperson is, “I’m happy with what I have at the moment.” According to David, if your sellers are going to make 15 appointments a day, they can’t wait to find the people that actually think they have a need or who are not happy with their current vendor.  “I realized that most businesses don't know they have a need,” David says. “They can't smell their needs because they get used to them. The issues with the slow computer, you know, all the different things that happen. That becomes their normal. Cold calling is easy. But it's hard if you're trying to find a need.” Again, the secret here is to agree with people, agree with their perspective. “If I were in your shoes, I would agree with you.” A subset of people who say they are happy with what they have are actually open-minded. That’s who your sellers should identify and say, “ I'm sure you are happy but there might be something better out there, things might change in the future, right?”  People will end up agreeing with the sales rep and would like to hear more about the product or service. In other words, the salesperson’s job is to become an effective listener and acknowledge someone when they say, “I don't. I won't. I can't. It's not the right time,” and then turn that into a sales conversation. Make sure to listen to this episode as David tells some real-life cold calling stories where he used these tips to set more appointments and close deals. How to Double Your Cold-Calling Contacts   Cold-calling has always been part of the sales process. Many salespeople can struggle with this aspect of the job but it's a critical part of gaining new prospects. The more you call, the greater the odds that they will turn into great leads.    David Walter ran a call center for thirteen years and is currently a coach. He is also the author of the book, The Million Dollar Rebuttal and Stratospheric Lead Generation Secrets. David also worked with the American Bank i, and then helped his father sell million-dollar HVAC equipment. The recession then hit, however, and David had to look for another job.    David reads a lot as part of his training and personal development. He credits his exposure to quality books as being a catalyst to the life he has today.  With the culmination of his experience and knowledge, David has been able to revolutionize the concept of cold-calling from the ground up.    Mistakes salespeople make David did training with SDRs in Plano and made a video series to help them learn more about cold-calling. When they were doing their calls, however, they were just calling the wrong numbers and weren't getting anywhere. They weren't able to make any useful contacts. Based on a study, 70% of contact information is incorrect and 55% of the people you call may not be available to talk to. These “dead” numbers can eat up a sales rep's valuable hours. However, David assures us all is not lost.    During David's years in the call center he was always on the hunt for the perfect list. The lists were supposed to be verified but he found that it wasn't the case. He learned his lesson and decided to release the idea of a perfect list. Instead, he opted for a basic format with the names of the companies and put it in a simple CRM like Crmble. He also developed a script that he still uses to get “gatekeepers” to provide needed information. He did this by listening to natural calls and getting back to the basics.     For example, David used to work with a distributorship and it involved him answering calls. He noticed that if a person just used a first name when asking for a contact, the caller sounded more confident and there was an air of authority and familiarity that he'd immediately respond to. David realized he could use this “first name” technique to qualify contacts.  Ask the basic questions first David also observed that people often have an easier time if you ease them into answering a series of questions.Confirming an address is an easy way to get someone to open up. Ask your way into more information little by little.     David will typically start at LinkedIn when qualifying a new company.  Oftentimes, LinkedIn has the most updated information about the company name and can access a list of employees to know who he should call.    Cold-calling is not a numbers game Many sales people perceive cold-calling as the hardest part of the job. In truth, cold-calling can be at the same level as other activities if looked at in the right way. With anything worth doing, it may seem hard at first but with practice and the right instruction, it becomes easier.    In Will Smith's movie, The Pursuit of Happiness, Will's character didn't call his list from top to bottom. What he did was skip names and call randomly. While Walter Ribbon didn't buy from Will, he got invited to a game where Will Smith was able to build a network with important people. Just know that if your goal is to make an appointment with 15 people, you need to call at least 40 people.    Qualifying your data Qualifying data is important so sales people aren't wasting their time. The key to cold-calling is to keep calling the companies at least three to four times a day within 3-4 days. Sales reps hesitate to do this because they're afraid of burning the list but if you do it the right way, this can be avoided. The way not to burn your list is to make your calls short and as natural as possible.       In addition to using the first name method,  don't leave a voicemail. Leaving a voicemail can be the cause of burning a list. Keep your call short and sweet and change your opening with each call.    The other strategy David uses is, “Hey, I'm calling for Donald but he's probably gone for the day.” David mimics a negative attitude that most gatekeepers have and uses it to position them to offer something positive.  They will often want to counteract the negativity.   Give that chill attitude  David also discovered that the less you seem to care, the more people will give you what you need. You don't want to sound desperate over the phone. With a more laid back attitude you will be more likely to talk to the person you want to talk to. Prospects may not have needs  Most prospects don't actually believe  they need to change. Looking for prospects who know their needs can be like looking for a needle in a haystack yet this is what salespeople are looking for. What can you do as a sales rep? You can realize they are not saying No, they're saying that they are comfortable with what they have; however, that doesn't rule out the possibility they need to make a change.    The Power Habit book talked about a remarkable story about Febreze. When it was first launched , the product failed even though it was a good one. They sent researchers out to figure out the reason why. They visited one homeowner with cats in her house. When they entered the house, the putrid smell of cats overwhelmed them. Despite the homeowner using the product, however, the scent remained. The problem was the homeowner couldn't smell it because she'd gotten used to the smell of her own cats. Prospects can be like these cat owners. They are so used to the same process, they don't even smell a problem anymore. Your job is to reveal a better alternative and offer something better. Even when they are happy with what they have, you can still offer improvements.   “How to Double Your Cold-Calling Contacts” episode resources Reach out to David Walter via his LinkedIn account. Communication expert Stacey Hanke is here to help us sort things out.SEGMENT 2: The finances for a lot of small businesses are a mess. But it's not totally your fault. CPA and Entrepreneur Spencer Sheinin is here to help with the essentials of what you need to know.SEGMENT 3: There is a popular belief that cold calling is dead, but my next guest believes nothing could be further from the truth. I first met Patrick Neher when I was an 18-year-old student at Northwestern University, and I've followed along with his career ever since.   Honestly, I can't believe that it has taken me this long to interview him for the podcast! After teaching at the University of Arizona for 28 years, Patrick has relocated to Bellingham, Washington.  He is immersed in composing new works... including two new double bass concertos! We dig into all kinds of things: growing up in New Mexico attending Juilliard and studying with David Walter (be ready for a funny story about this!) taking his bass on the subway and surviving blackouts in New York City meeting François Rabbath and switching rom a block technique to an open hand technique how the right hand is core to Rabbath’s approach Patrick's “natural tempo, natural forms” approach We also feature several excerpts from Patrick's wonderful solo albums.  It was a pleasure to spend some time with this active artist who has contributed so much to the double bass! Most musicians don’t have a day dedicated to them in their hometown. Shinji Eshima does. In 2011, the city of Berkeley, California named the day December 6th Shinji Eshima Day, in his honor for his contributions to the arts. Even fewer musicians play an instrument featured in a Degas painting. But Shinji Eshima does. His Plumerel bass is the very same instrument painted by Degas in L’Orchestre de l’Opera. Shinji’s impact on the double bass world has been tremendous. He has performed with the San Francisco Ballet and San Francisco Opera Orchestras for decades. He teaches at San Francisco State University and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. His students have gone on to perform with the San Francisco Symphony, Utah Symphony, London Philharmonia, Montreal Symphony and the Concertgebouw of Amsterdam. But Shinji is also a composer… and what a composer! In 2011, the San Francisco Ballet commissioned him to write a ballet. RAkU was the result, and it has been performed across the globe by the San Francisco Ballet. RAkU has also joined the repertoire of The Joffrey Ballet. Swimmer, his third ballet for the San Francisco Ballet, premiered in 2015. We talk about Shinji’s early years on the instrument, studying with David Walter, performing in the pit, getting into composing, and much more!
