Remember the four years of noise from the right about Joe Biden being the doddering, senile old man who wasn't really "in charge" of his presidency? So now that we're all aware of the Signal app "klatch" (read the dialogue here) ruminating over clearly classified information (except, "nuh-uh!") the question that came up for me, mostly recently is "where was the President?"Images of Presidents and their inner circle in the "situation room" or a secure room flanked by monitors and communication paraphernalia come to mind, right? He was playing golf. (cue the 'sad trombone' effect) So, who's in charge? Elon runs amok with DOGE; attorney general Pam Bondi seems to have taken up permanent residence at Fox News to fling vapid threats, and JD Vance and Pete Hegseth and the intel fellas get on Signal to play real life "Call of Duty?" While POTUS plays golf. Oh, and because Hegseth lies like you and I breathe, it's worth noting that his characterization of Biden having "cratered" in the face of the threat from Houthis is an out-and-out LIE.------Meanwhile, under the gold dome in Georgia's capitol city of Atlanta, "religious freedom" zealots are continuing their decade-long quest to codify protections for bigotry and bias under the thin veil of religion. With me to discuss his and his organization's efforts to (again) stifle it and combat another round of anti-trans legislation, Georgia Equality executive director Jeff Graham. Also, how is it that LGBTQ+ sports organizations have been working for nearly half a century to find a place for any and everyone who wants to play sports - even heterosexuals - yet the notion befuddles anti-trans activists on the right in 2025?

President Trump recently signed an executive order to suspend the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program and resettlement funding. However, a federal judge has blocked Trump's actions — calling it an overreach. For a roundtable discussion, “Closer Look” is joined by Reverend John R. Moeller Jr., the president and CEO of Inspiritus, Aimee Zangandou, the executive director of Refugee and Immigrant Services at Inspiritus and Louisa Merchant, the director of Refugee Ministries at All Saints Episcopal in Midtown. They talk with Rose regarding the disruption of resettlement services, the suspension of funding and other efforts to serve thousands of service refugees in Georgia. Plus, Georgia lawmakers are weeks away from Sine Die for the 2025 legislative session. As the session is nearing an end, the ACLU is tracking 527 proposed bills, from across the U.S., that they refer to as “anti-LGBTQ bills. ” The ACLU claims 11 of those bills have been introduced in the Georgia Legislature. Jeff Graham, the executive director of Georgia Equality, talks more about the proposed legislation his organization is watching that allegedly targets the LGBTQ+ community.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

With just five days before the inauguration of a second Donald Trump term, the trans community in Georgia (and throughout the U.S.) has had to weather a storm of antir-trans sentiment; some of it put to use by the Trump campaign. We check in with Jeff Graham, executive director for Georgia Equality, to get a sense what their activism can accomplish with a decidely-conservative state legislature and GOP governor likely angling to solidify his conservative bonafides ahead of a potential Senate or Presidential run. Speaking of weathering and storms, the founding director of End Climate Silence,  Dr. Genevieve Guenther (author of "The Language of Climate Politics") joined me to add her immense credibility to correct a wave of disinformation as the Eaton/Palisades wildfires ravage southern California. Oh, and reviewing Jon Stewart's blistering of hypocritical Republicans in DC seeking to add conditions to aid was worth a review, too.

I've strayed from routinely watching "Real Time with Bill Maher," for a couple reasons: one, I just can't keep paying for all these streaming services (the show now re-airs on CNN, though) and he's too tone-deaf on trans issues for my taste. That said, on the economy, he was spitting facts on his last "new rule" prior to Election Day. The gist? The economy doesn't need saving; it's been saved. MAGA's have an alternate reality fog they won't see through and (I agree here) Democrats have been timid to tout this. Closer to home, more than 3000 Cobb County absentee voters' ballots are imperiled by the Georgia Supreme Court's latest ruling. Will their votes count? Depends on when they're handed to Cobb Elections officials - who admit the mistake is on them & not the voters. C'mon, already . On to discuss that and her organization's more than 75 endorsed candidates up and down the ballot is Georgia WIN List executive director Melita Easters. Also on to respond to the litany of anti-trans messaging from the Trump campaign and to tout his organization's efforts to support pro-LGBTQIA+ candidates is Georgia Equality executive director Jeff Graham.

A perfectly well-meaning bill introduced by freshman Rep. Omari Crawford passed out of the Georgia House and went into yesterday's Senate education subcommittee hearing, where five ultra-right wing measures - some explicitly anti-LGBTQIA+ - were attached to it. Hear Crawford present his bill, ask that only it be considered (it wouldn't be) and then hear Sen. Clint Dixon pile on the "red meat" that couldn't get out of Senate Rules committee already. All these GOP measures are backed by Lt. Governor Burt Jones - an announced gubernatorial candidate for the 2026 cycle, incidentally. Thursday concluded 'crossover day' in the Georgia General Assembly, so I spent a little time reviewing what did and didn't float from one chamber to the other, & eavesdrop on some 'night of' interviews from GPB's "Lawmakers" for some insights from lawmakers beneath the gold dome. While listening in, it sounds like there's a realization from Georgia Senate Republicans that their new-fangled subpoena-powered committee will only be empowered to suggest new legislation in reaction to any findings vs having the power to remove a D.A. they don't care for. Also, hear Rep. Stacy Evans blister HB 1105 (the anti-immigrant legislation hastily concocted in recent days. She rightly points out that the thin veil over this bill doesn't hide the fact that women's safety is never a priority when it comes to enacting common-sense gun bills into law. Jeff Graham, executive director at Georgia Equality, joined me to discuss the very real possibility that SB180 - the Religious Freedom Restoration Act - could become law, enshrining bigotry shrouded in "religious rights." A Marietta man was killed in a shooting at an extended stay on South Cobb Drive and another arrested in the early morning incident Wednesday, according to the Cobb County Police Department. Ricky Haney died after being shot in the abdomen while in room 210 of the Cumberland Lodge Hotel.. Wilson said Clarence Mitchell of Marietta, told detectives at the scene an altercation occurred on Tuesday between him and Haney, leading to a separate altercation at 4:40 a.m. Wednesday. Wilson added that the second altercation allegedly led Mitchell to fire a single gunshot at Haney, who died of his injuries after being transported to the hospital. Mitchell was arrested by police and charged with felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, Wilson said. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Cobb County Police Tip Hotline. State Senator Ed Setzler, a Republican from Acworth, filed legislation this week he said would expand state religious protections to mirror those imposed by a 1993 federal law. The Religious Freedom Restoration Act, SB 180, borrows from existing federal legislation on religious liberty, and renews the debate over constitutional rights nearly seven years after a previous bill was vetoed by former Governor Nathan Deal. Deal's decision to shoot down the legislation in 2016 came as LGBTQ rights activists said it would effectively legalize discrimination, as the bill would have allowed religious organizations to refuse service if doing so would violate their beliefs, among other measures. Georgia's business community — including the Cobb Chamber of Commerce — commended the veto by Deal. Setzler's new bill enters the General Assembly with significant Republican support out of the gate, as 24 other GOP state senators have already co-signed the measure. Cobb's two other Republican state senators — Kay Kirkpatrick and John Albers — were not listed as co-sponsors. Both told the MDJ they had not reviewed the bill before it was filed. Senator Setzler stated that the law isn't designed to favor one side or another in a question over religious expression, but to serve as a yardstick by which disputes can be evaluated in court. Jeff Graham, executive director of Georgia Equality, said that while freedom of religion is a cornerstone of the country, it is imperative that in the protection of religion that the state not create license to discriminate. McEachern pulled away with a big second quarter, and held off a late Hillgrove comeback, to win 50-43 in the semifinals of the girls Region 3AAAAAAA basketball tournament at Harrison on Wednesday. The Indians outscored the Hawks 13-3 in the second quarter to take control, though Hillgrove eventually closed the gap in the second half and got within one late in the fourth quarter. The win earned McEachern a spot in the today's championship game against North Paulding. Hillgrove will face Harrison in the third-place game. Kalise Hill scored 21 points and Jada Bates added 15 points to lead the way for McEachern. Yolanda Floyd scored 16 points for Hillgrove. McEachern got its quest for a region championship off to a strong start with a 84-56 victory over Marietta in the semifinals of the Region 3 seven a basketball tournament at Harrison on Wednesday. The Indians will play Hillgrove in the championship game, while Marietta takes on Harrison in the third-place contest today. McEachern was boosted by a strong first quarter in which it outscored Marietta 21-12 and it continued to gradually build its lead the rest of the way. Rutgers commitment Ace Bailey led the way for McEachern with 31 points, while Moses Hipps contributed 14 points for the Indians. Jack Bourgeois scored 15 points on five 3-pointers, while Jaiden Mann added 13 points for Marietta. A Douglasville man has been arrested and charged with arson, accused by authorities of starting a fire in Mableton on Tuesday. Sebastian Perez was charged with first degree arson, a felony, according to Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services. As the Arnolds sought to retrieve some belongings from the home, Strong attacked Maurice Arnold with a hunting knife. As DeAndre Arnold attempted to stop Strong from continually stabbing Maurice Arnold, he was injured by Strong, the DA's office added. Police arrived at the scene and arrested Strong after talking to witnesses, according to the DA's office. Maurice Arnold later died from his injuries. Firefighters responded to a commercial fire in the 1300 block of Old Powder Springs Road shortly before 10 a.m. Tuesday. Perez is being held at the Cobb County jail. He is ineligible for bond. Two people were shot and injured at an apartment complex in south Cobb early Thursday, the Cobb County Police Department said. Officers responded to a reported shooting around 1:24 a.m. at the Premier Apartments, located off Riverside Parkway in the Six Flags area, police said. There, they found Phil Ray, 23, of Austell, and Jamari Payne, 19, of Woodstock, with gunshot wounds. One person had a gunshot wound to their left foot, while the other had gunshot wounds to their arm and torso, police said. Ray and Payne were both taken to a local hospital for treatment, where they remain in stable condition, according to police. Police continue to investigate the shooting. Tuesday on Political Rewind: It has been 50 years since Atlanta's first gay Pride parade kicked off on Peachtree Street in Atlanta. Compared to its recent iterations, the march was a small event. At the time, homosexuality was illegal under Georgia law and members of the LGTBQ community typically lived lives in the shadows. But on June 27, 1971, they congregated in Atlanta to publicly demand an end to persecution. The years since have seen a slow but dramatic transformation in laws and societal understanding of the LGBTQ community in Georgia and across the country, though obstacles to true equality still remain. On today's show, we reflected on the atmosphere that surrounded the first public stirring of gay pride among demonstrators, on Peachtree Street marchers, and looked at just how far LGBTQ rights have come in the half century since. Panelists: Taylor Alxndr — Co-Founder and Executive Director of Southern Fried Queer Pride, Musician and Drag Performer Tamar Hallerman — Senior Reporter, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Jeff Graham — Executive Director, Georgia Equality Shannon Clawson — Statewide Outreach Manager, Georgia Equality
