Hi! I am your host Esther Yunkin. I am a registered nurse with over 20 years of experience. I grew fed up in the emergency department, where I saw people get short-term bandaids to chronic problems, so I went back to school for holistic health. Now I help overwhelmed moms discover simple and sustainable solutions without getting overwhelmed. WHAT IS HASHIMOTO'S THYROIDITIS? Quickly, Hashimoto's is when you have antibodies to your own thyroid. Your immune system is attacking your thyroid. Your thyroid produces thyroid hormone which is like the spark plug that lets each cell work. So when you have Hashimoto's, every single cell in your entire body is impacted. That's Hashimoto's in a nutshell. In this podcast, you will discover how to help your thyroid, how to help your immune system, and how to holistically help you: body, mind, spirit, diet, and environment. And in having my memory jogged, something crystallized for me around being an effective podcast host. We're going to get into all of it today, so take a coffee (or tea, or water) break and let's chat! Show notes and more at SmartPassiveIncome.com/session488

The Jonas family is a God-loving, hard-working, ever-learning family that seeks to honor Jesus in all that they do. We began Goat Milk Stuff to share the goodness of goat milk with others and to provide an environment where the children could learn to be entrepreneurs. As the children and Goat Milk Stuff have grown, they've been able to watch all of these goals come to fruition. The Jonas’ have a very simple philosophy when it comes to parenting and educating children. It can be summed up as follows: ***Everything is a God issue and a learning opportunity (including making and selling goat milk soap). ***Hard work builds character which is an essential ingredient to a successful life. ***Each of our children are unique individuals with unique strengths and weaknesses and are raised as individuals. ***The family unit is a team and we all are sometimes called to sacrifice for the team.

PJ was such a fun guest and I am thrilled to share her episode and inspiring story with you all! PJ is the mother of 8 children that are all homeschooled and help run the family business. They work on a goat farm that produces amazing products from the goat milk they have in excess. PJ transitioned to a natural and organic life for her kids and wanted to feed raw goat milk to her children. The very act of having the animals added to their homeschool experience and family environment. Realizing the goat milk could be used for more than just consumption, PJ started down a path that has completely changed her life! What began as having a few dairy goats turned into a full fledged million dollar business that ships goat milk based products all over the country! I loved how she talked about opportunity cost and the value of doing things you should be doing can sacrifice time spent on something actually worthwhile or beneficial! So many nuggets of info here, and that was one that especially stood out.

To often, we let other people's expectations of us hold us back from what we should really be doing. We often let societal norms dictate who we should be, how we should show up and how we should serve humanity. There are so many opportunities for you to take advantage of. You have the skills to add value to other people and there are so many opportunities for you to do so. The path of least resistance is not God's way. If it were, more people would go that route. Get a FREE bar of Goats Milk Soap! http://goatmilkstuff.com/TrueHealthSoap Goat Milk Stuff http://learntruehealth.com/goat-milk/ More people are shunning cow milk from their diet. And for an excellent reason, too! Cow milk can be hard to digest, not to mention inflammatory for some people. On the contrary, goat milk has a lot more benefits, whether you drink it or use it on your skin. My guest today, PJ Jonas, will tell us why. Making The Switch PJ Jonas is a mother of eight children, all homeschooled. Yes, you read it right. Eight children! She turned into such a big advocate for goat milk after discovering the harmful ingredients in bath soap in 2005. Not wanting toxic chemicals on her children’s skin, PJ Jonas went to look for natural ingredients that are both gentle and moisturizing on the skin. But since it was illegal to purchase raw milk in Indiana, PJ Jonas decided to get some dairy goats instead. And lo and behold, it turns out that goat milk was healthier than cow milk! “The main difference is the digestibility of the goat milk. There is no adverse reaction, unlike cow milk. Plus, it has a lot of nutrients,” explains PJ Jonas. Developing The Goat Milk Stuff Brand Apart from soaps, PJ Jonas eventually learned to make cheese and gelato using goat milk. Developing the brand for three years, PJ Jonas started giving out product samples in 2008. Apparently, Goat Milk Stuff is very much a family business. PJ Jonas proudly reveals that all her kids are involved. From the production to paying their taxes, managing accounts and dealing with customers, everyone contributes to building the brand. It was, however, not all smooth sailing for PJ Jonas. During the time between 2005 and 2008, the family experienced a budget shortfall. Despite the setback, the whole family was able to pull through. “Sometimes it’s the things that you think are the biggest disasters in your life, are pushing you exactly where you need to go,” said PJ Jonas. PJ Jonas says that when you’re building a company, it takes cash to fund and fuel that growth. And lack of money flow is what usually puts companies out of business. “Very few companies go out of business for growing too slowly. But many companies go out of business because they grow too quickly,” observes PJ Jonas. Benefits of Goat Milk Goat milk is a viable option to those who have a hard time digesting cow milk. Only two percent of goat milk is curd, whereas cow milk has 10 percent. Goat milk also has fewer allergenic proteins. Hence, causes less inflammation. If you’re worried about your calcium intake requirement, you’d be surprised to know that goat milk is richer in minerals than cow milk. It’s also high in fatty acids but low in cholesterol. “Goat milk itself has healing properties. It is high in selenium and good for the skin,” explains PJ Jonas. Success Stories PJ Jonas first tried out the goat milk soap on her husband Jim, who dealt with cracked and split fingertips for years. Within two to three days of using goat milk soap, his fingertips were healed! She also observed that her children’s skin looked better. Furthermore, the children rarely got sick anymore because they consistently drank goat milk. Because of this, PJ Jonas decided to get the message out so more people could benefit from it as well. In 2008, when PJ Jonas started giving out free samples, the response was very positive. Moms of kids who had eczema called in to report that the Goat Milk Stuff soap improved their children’s skin considerably. Apart from that, many others shared that the goat milk soap alleviated the symptoms of many other skin problems. Slowly but surely, the Goat Milk Stuff brand gained a lot of publicity. People were just amazed! “When you make a difference in someone’s life, all the hard work is worth it,” says PJ Jonas. Looking Ahead The Jonas family is currently looking into building a larger barn to accommodate their Alpine goats. This year, PJ Jonas says that they will be milking 80 goats twice a day and offering the milk products for sale on their website. PJ Jonas, however, cautions those who plan to get into the goat milk business as well. She stresses the importance of finding a good breeder who makes sure the goats they breed are in tip-top shape. Goat Milk Products If you look at the Goat Milk Stuff website, there are a plethora of products. Apart from the different kinds of bar and liquid soaps, the brand also offers solid lotions and deodorants with a detoxifying effect. Another great product to try is the laundry soap. PJ Jonas explains that the soap has special oils intended to break down grease stains and help fight bacteria. PJ Jonas reveals that the conventional laundry soap has an optical brightener. Apparently, it tricks your eye into making your clothes look brighter than they are. It has to bind to clothing, hence, causing a lot of irritation. “Everybody is different. Take time to find something that works well for you and understand its limitations,” advises PJ Jonas. ” Our liver is excellent at detoxifying your body, but it is just overwhelmed. So we have to get rid of as many toxins as we can. Finding the things that are good for you is worth the effort.” PJ Jonas is a business owner, goat wrangler, entrepreneur, and mother. After getting goats to provide healthy milk for her eight children, she decided to put excess milk into a batch of handmade soap. That decision was the start of Goat Milk Stuff Her Goat Milk products have been featured on The Today Show, The Doctors, and the “O” Oprah Winfrey magazine. PJ Jonas puts her systems engineering degree from the University of Virginia to good use while managing her business, farm, and family. This is a great story of how a business was started in her kitchen and grew it into a million dollar business. After getting goats to provide healthy milk for her eight children, she decided to put some excess milk into a batch of handmade soap. That decision was the beginning of Goat Milk Stuff, a growing goat milk products business that includes Goat Milk Soaps, cheeses, candies, fudge, gelato and more! PJ lives in Indiana with her husband, Jim and eight children. The entire family along with 6 full time employees work hard to promote the goodness of goat milk. You can explore more at www.GoatMilkStuff.com Nuggets of Wisdom from PJ: "Thomas Jefferson - I’m a great believer in luck and the harder I work the more I have of it." "All that hard work, ultimately, leads to the success that we are looking for." "By teaching our children how to do things, to cook, to do the dishes, to do the laundry, that frees a lot of my time and leaves me more time to spend having more fun times with them. When everybody works, all the work ultimately gets finished for the day." "When we started Goat Milk Stuff, everything had to become more focused. Starting a business from the very beginning, I had to involve my children in all the business aspects. It’s all something that we all had to work side by side." "You start small, you are not going to change something big overnight. That’s where a lot of us Go wrong. We have too drastic of a change too quickly. Pick something. Start with something small. Start with cooking. Pick a meal that you can teach your children to make. Don’t try and do it all radically because if we change too fast, it just falls apart. It’s all hard but it’s worth the effort." Some of PJ's Favorite Things: "SLEEP is the priority. I go to bed early. Don’t have time to go to a gym. I incorporate exercise into my day: 10-20 squats in the bathroom and 2 pushups against the sink, calf raises while washing dishes, 1 legged toothbrushing." Favorite kitchen gadget: Cutco Knives Niyc's Favorite Books: "Margin by Richard Swenson. Having space in your life. Time, physical energy, finances, and emotional energy. Keep space. That space between being overwhelmed and being able to keep up with where you’re at. Just keep that little bit of space, life will be so much more enjoyable." Best advice received: "Remember what’s important… You have to look 20 years down the road. Is what I’m doing contributing to that? I want my kids to be best friends and have successful marriages and families of their own and put others’ needs in front of their own. " PJ's Happiness Formula: "Sleep + eating well + doing nothing with my family. That would make me happy. Just together being a family. Telling stories, laughing -for me that’s what it’s all about." A Challenge from PJ: "Let go of something and create more margin in your life. Say no to something and free up more time. Figure out something that you can let go of. PJ Jonas is a business owner, goat-wrangler, entrepreneur, and mother. After getting goats to provide healthy milk for her eight children, she decided to put some excess milk into a batch of handmade soap. That decision was the beginning of Goat Milk Stuff, a growing goat milk products business that has been featured on The Today Show, The Doctors, The Huckabee Show, and in “O”, the Oprah Magazine. What started with an initial small batch of soap has expanded into a host of goat milk items such as goat milk soaps, cheeses, candies, fudge, gelato and more. It’s a team effort to keep the farm running, make and ship all the products, and welcome visitors to the farm. PJ’s husband, eight children (aged 9 to 19), and six full-time employees, all work hard to promote the goodness of goat milk. With over nineteen years of homeschooling children under her belt, as well as eight years of running a business, PJ enjoys talking to mothers and entrepreneurs across the world about living the best life they can live. She puts her systems engineering degree from the University of Virginia to good use every day, maximizing efficiencies in the processes of her business, farm, and household.Managing change in a dynamic work environment and constantly re-evaluating what is working and what isn’t are some of PJ’s strengths. A general hatred of clutter, and all other time and energy thieves, helps PJ decide what needs to go; but not everything is subject to change. PJ’s faith in Jesus along with a strong work ethic are non-negotiables that support some of her favorite maxims like the Pareto Principle, the Golden Rule, and the Youngest-Person Rule. In this episode… What does a thriving family owned business look like? Is it just a company started by the parents and passed on to the kids or could it involve more than that? On this episode of Inspired Insider, you’ll hear from entrepreneur and business owner PJ Jonas as she shares the details of her family owned business, Goat Milk Stuff. One of the KEY reasons that Goat Milk Stuff has experienced such growth and success is because of their unique story. PJ explains how she and her family moved from new New Jersey to Indiana to live on a farm and eventually start their own family business. To catch PJ’s story, make sure to listen to this episode! Can you imagine searching for a product that would help your family only to find that it doesn’t exist? PJ Jonas wanted a clean and safe bath soap for her children and realized that the options available on the market at that time were very limited. All the products she looked at had complicated and unhealthy additives so PJ set out to make her own soap solution, that’s how Goat Milk Stuff was born. From creating her own soap line, PJ and her family decided to expand their efforts so they took their soap products to local craft shows. This allowed her to connect with other health-conscious moms who found, even more, benefits to the natural and healthy solution of PJ’s goat milk based soap. Don’t miss out on the whole story from PJ on this episode of Inspired Insider! One of the unique facets of PJ Jonas’ company, Goat Milk Stuff, is that her children are integrally involved with the day to day operations. In fact, this part of their story is what has led Goat Milk Stuff to enjoy such a high profile in the marketplace. PJ’s vision for her family owned business isn’t to just build something for the kids to inherit, she wants them to be active participants in something that matters. To their credit, the children have risen to her high bar and they are all actively involved and look forward to taking over the family business in the near future. There is so much more to PJ’s story, don’t miss any of it on this episode of Inspired Insider! What family traditions did you grow up with as a child? What values and lessons are you passing on to the next generation? For PJ Jonas and her husband, they are passing on a strong sense of personal responsibility along with their family owned business, Goat Milk Stuff to their children. On this episode of Inspired Insider, you’ll learn that getting the children involved isn’t PJ’s only focus, she is determined to help them learn and grow into responsible and contributing members of society. PJ and her husband accomplish this goal through homeschooling the children and teaching them from a young age that they have a role to play in the greater family structure. To hear more about PJ and her family’s story, make sure to catch this episode! What is the secret to keeping a family owned business profitable? If you ask entrepreneur and business owner PJ Jonas, she’ll point to their wise use of cash flow. PJ and her family learned early on that one of the most important steps to stay out of the red were to only spend their money on items and endeavors that would provide a return on their investment. It seems like such a simple principle but, as most business leaders will attest to, it’s easier said than done. I'm not some kind of genius. I think I made some smart moves along the way that made us what we are, but it kind of unfolded itself. It's like a paper airplane, you just kind of keep unfolding each wing and it keeps going. -Brandt Fuqua Any effort you put in early I think is coming back to you tenfold later. I believe that without question. But there's always a cost. Whether it's your time, your freedom, your social life, personal possessions, monetary value, whatever. We lived like we were poor for quite a few years just so we could be able to do some of the things we've done in the recent years. Some people don't know our full story, or they forget that we struggled all that time or didn't have things, so now that we have things it's like you're an overnight success. And that does happen, but not to many people, and it didn't happen to us. -Brandt Fuqua I don't feel guilty about sharing some of my successes in life, whether it be the equipment or the cars, or whatever, it's not a bragging thing. If it inspires even one person to go out and creates a business, even if they fail, if they give it a shot, I think that's worth it. If there aren't people out there showing you what you can do from nothing, there's not a lot of motivation for some people, they need to see the result. -Brandt Fuqua If you're not making it happen, then you don't want it bad enough. -Zephan Moses Blaxberg You really have to go after the things that you enjoy doing. We don't have enough time on this earth to do the things that we don't like doing. -Zephan Moses Blaxberg With the limited time you have in each and every day, who you surround yourself with is the biggest thing you can control that makes the most difference in your life. -Mike Alexander It's not doing what you love if you're still chained to a desk. -Mike Alexander There are ways to do your own thing and make your life different than what it is. There's a middle ground between staying at something you hate doing and quitting everything to chase what you want. There's a lot of play between those two things that people can do, and those options don't seem to be talked about a lot. -Eric Zimmer I don't see working for a big company as job security. Having skills that I know I can apply in a lot of different places and continuing to have connections, I see that as job security. I'm confident I can go find some way to make money with the skill set I have. I have no faith that Fortune 100 company “X” is any safer than being out on your own. -Eric Zimmer All the monthly payments were really killing us, and to be honest, we didn't even know how much we were spending on everything. We realized what's stopping a lot of people of traveling full time, including ourselves back then, is oftentimes a belief that they don't have the money. But it's just that, it's just a belief. Or they organize their life in a certain way and now they're stuck paying every month for stuff that in the end they don't really need. They'd rather travel than have cable TV, but they have cable TV because they have a TV and it's just convenient, which is the normal thing to do. So now we second guess every financial decision we do, because we're like, do we pay for a better flight or do we spend more money on that meaningless thing. And oftentimes, we choose the better flight. So really it's just our priorities have evolved a lot. -Nick & Gen When you do stuff differently, even though this is not what you're doing, you're questioning other people's lifestyle. They feel like you're challenging what they're doing. And they don't feel comfortable just because you're doing something different. Which doesn't make any sense because it doesn't apply to their life. This is why you sometimes get negative feedback to these kinds of decisions because people just want to feel normal and feel like they're doing the right thing. -Nick & Gen When you get rid of a bunch of stuff, there's definitely this huge sense of freedom that you just can't get anywhere else. -Trevor Gay Without a doubt, I think that just seeing those goals in front of you when you wake up and when you go to sleep are powerful. And it's not magic, it's just literally seeing your goals everyday and that's a simple reminder of what you're working towards. Ask yourself, “Have I done anything today to work towards that goal?” And if you say no, well, there's your motivation right there as soon as you get out of bed. -Trevor Gay Taking care of yourself regardless of your dietary choice is probably one of the most important things you could do in life period. -Trevor Gay One of my missions in life is to just wake people up, shake them up a little bit, and make them realize that you could be gone tomorrow. This is it. You have two decisions: become great and continue to do that, or sit on the couch and be forgotten. -Joshua Santos The ones who look weird to the world and society, those are the guys that I want to stick around with. -Joshua Santos It's so easy to have self-doubts. But maybe that's a good thing because maybe that means you're pushing yourself. -Fat Tony If you calculate the risk, then you're probably not gonna have many regrets. -Fat Tony I hired someone that knew what they were doing to help me and teach me what I needed to do. Then I put in a ton of work, and I'm getting results. -Michael Carbone When people think I'm crazy, that's when I know I'm doing something right. -Michael Carbone Even if you have the most basic knowledge, you shouldn't take it for granted. There's always people who don't know anything about that topic or are just new to it. So you can always find an audience of people who want to learn more. -Michael Carbone I'd rather be great at a couple things than good at everything. -Kolby Kolibas Who you know will get you there, what you know will keep you there. -Kolby Kolibas Risk is just being able to embrace uncertainty when you're going to make a decision. And there are very few decisions that we make that don't have some amount of uncertainty involved. -Kayt Sukel Success to me isn't just about making money, it's about carving out a life for yourself that has wealth in all aspects of it. -Kayt Sukel It all comes down to creating quality content and figuring out how you can get that content in front of as many people as possible (the right people) to the point where it actually makes an impact in their life first. Just give incredible value to the point where they're willing to give you an email address, they're willing to buy your stuff & do business with you, and to really scale that. -Geoff Woods You need to figure out what you're passionate about. You need to surround yourself with people who inspire you, who are already doing what you want to be doing, what you could only hope one day to have the opportunity to do. And when you surround yourself with those types of people they end up opening your eyes and showing you ways that you can do things that you never thought you could do before. -Geoff Woods It took getting everything I thought I wanted to realize that everything I ever wanted wasn't actually what I wanted at all. -Joshua Fields Millburn I don't have a college degree at all and I've never taken a writing class. The reason I started teaching a writing class online was because a lot of people kept asking me a ton of questions about writing. -Joshua Fields Millburn The path that I was on was leading me to a place that I didn't want to be. And so, the bigger risk for me would be staying. -Joshua Fields Millburn Planning on paper is very different than implementing it in real life. -Zombie Dogz It's a big leap and it's scary but you just gotta do it. You gotta commit, just like anything in life. -Zombie Dogz You gotta be willing to work. You gotta be very self-disciplined when you're self-employed. And when you're carving your own path, that's probably one of the hardest parts. -Andrew Norelli Accept that life happens and don't let things side-track you. -Andrew Norelli Something you love doing, something people will pay you for, and something that you're good at. Where those three areas intersect, that's where you can build a business. -Tucker Max If you want to start a business, the easiest thing to do is find a problem that is really painful to people. Then create a solution that they will pay for. -Tucker Max I'm young, I'm ambitious, and if I fail, and it doesn't work out, oh well, at least I tried. And now I know what doesn't work and I can learn from that. But if I never tried, I didn't want to look back ten years from now and say I wish I would have followed my heart and pursued my passions. -Jake Kelfer A lot of people still don't understand why I'm doing what I'm doing, but that doesn't mean they're correct. That just means they don't understand yet. -Jake Kelfer I think that for me, working on one thing solely is ineffective because I will choke it to death, I will worry about it, I'll obsess on it. Whereas, if I have multiple things going, I can work on whatever feels best in whichever company, and I don't worry as much. -Andrea Lake If you can't make your business work with a few thousand dollars starting out, it's probably not going to work, and more money isn't the answer. -Andrea Lake The day that you launch your website is the worst it's ever gonna look, because you're going to improve upon it from there. And then we extended that out and said, the day that you launch any business is the worst that that business is every going to be. So stop waiting until everything is perfect. -Andrea Lake I can tell ya, when you get it working and you realize how free a person you can be, it's absolutely intoxicating. There's actually an adjustment period to get your head around the fact that you can basically do whatever you want. -Pete Sisco I've never met anyone who doesn't have a skill, an ability, or at the very least a passion that can't be of service to somebody who would be happy to pay money for it. -Pete Sisco If you had all the money that you ever needed, if you were 100% debt-free, and you had money in the bank that was going to last you for the rest of your life, you just didn't have to think about it, what would you do? What would you want to do every day? -Pete Sisco The talents are natural, the skills come from repetition. But you have to do the work to get the skill. The talent is something that you're just naturally good at. But ironically, you won't figure out if you're naturally good at it until you do it. -Maj Toure What I do on my social media is, I make little motivational videos. The general public thinks that's for them. It's not. I use it for me at times when I'm down to keep myself motivated. It's like my future self talking to my present self. -Maj Toure We didn't realize it at the time, but the fact that we spent so many years living below our means, not having any debt except for the mortgage, and paying down the mortgage, that's what enabled us to build Goat Milk Stuff so quickly. -PJ Jonas I wasn't going to let someone else or their experience tell me what I could and could not do. I don't let other people's reality impact my reality. -PJ Jonas I think the best entrepreneurs in the world are those that can remain mentally, spiritually, and emotionally peaceful even in the midst of chaos. -RJ Hodges There's no way that you can keep talking about a thing and you don't finally at some point take action on it. Because when you have a deep-rooted desire, it will not let you rest. -RJ Hodges Thanks for listening Be sure to subscribe to the podcast here and I can't wait to share the next episode with you soon! But when it comes, it brings with it a whole host of new challenges. This was especially true for PJ Jonas and her family’s business. They had to decide what they were going to do to take their business to the next level. Because they deal with dairy products, they were caught in a tough situation. State regulations forced them to decide if they wanted to keep their business at a small scale level or quickly start putting the pieces together for a larger scale operation, there simply wasn’t any place in between. If you’d like to hear more of PJ’s story and how they were able to overcome this difficulty, make sure to catch this episode of Inspired Insider. One of the best aspects of running a small business that you started from home is being able to raise your children in an entrepreneurial environment. The values and life lessons that you are able to pass on and instill in your children are priceless. When looking back at their decision to move to Indiana, build their life on a farm, and start a small business PJ Jonas relishes the fact that she built the business for her family as her proudest moment. You’ve got to hear her talk about how much her children are involved in the business, her pride and excitement are infectious! You’ll walk away from this episode with profound inspiration - you can’t miss it! It’s often said that the best way to ruin a relationship is to get money involved. There are countless stories of business leaders who bring in a family member or even friends only to have it ruin their relationships. PJ Jonas and her family learned this lesson the hard way. One of her lowest moments in business was when she realized that she wouldn’t be able to continue employing some friends she had brought into the business. It wasn’t because they were bad people, it just wasn’t a good fit. Can you imagine that scenario? It was really difficult for PJ and it’s cemented in her mind as one of the most difficult moments she had starting her small business. Hear about how she dealt with that situation and what you can learn from it on this episode of Inspired Insider. Is the American dream dead? There are many people who seem to think so. From high unemployment rates to stock market instability in recent years it’s fair to say that hope in building something from nothing can be hard to come by for many individuals. But there are those who see things in a different light, entrepreneur PJ Jonas is one of them. PJ and her family found their slice of the American dream through hard work and big goals. She will be the first person to tell you that it wasn’t all smooth sailing. They had setbacks and failures along the way but they persevered. What lesson can you learn from PJ and her family’s story? PJ Jonas is a business owner, goat-wrangler, entrepreneur, and mother. Afer getting goats to provide healthy milk for her eight children, she decided to put some excess milk into a batch of handmade soap. That decision was the beginning of Goat Milk Stuf, a growing goat milk products business that has been featured on The Today Show, The Doctors, The Huckabee Show, and in “O”, the Oprah Magazine. She puts her systems engineering degree from the University of Virginia to good use every day, maximizing efficiencies in the processes of her business, farm, and household. Managing change in a dynamic work environment and constantly re-evaluating what is working and what isn’t are some of PJ’s strengths. A general hatred of clutter, and all other time and energy thieves, helps PJ decide what needs to go; but not everything is subject to change. PJ’s faith in Jesus along with a strong work ethic are non-negotiables that support some of her favorite maxims like the Pareto Principle, the Golden Rule, and the YoungestPerson Rule. These all work together, not so much in a work-life balance that so many seem to be seeking, but rather in a work-family-school-faith integration that all happens simultaneously and continuously. www.goatmilkstuff.com

Best quotes from this episode We really understood our target market, because we were our target market. Word of mouth at the beginning, that was really how we had most of our initial growth. Social media is definitely been worth it for us but it's something that we definitely keep in it's perspective and do just try to keep it social. You don't have 8 children in today's society without sacrificing a lot. We didn't realize it at the time, but the fact that we spent so many years living below our means, not having any debt except for the mortgage, and paying down the mortgage, that's what enabled us to build Goat Milk Stuff so quickly. If we had been on the Today Show and we were trying to make it out of the kitchen, there's no way we could have filled those orders. It's kind of the myth of the overnight success, people think it happens so quickly, but they don't see the years and years of hard work and prep work that went into it. It's not about having a profitable business, it's about cash flow. There are plenty of profitable businesses that go out of business because they don't have the cash flow. It's better to grow slowly, because so many businesses will die because of growing too quickly. For every dollar of pre-tax income you want to make, you have to sell five dollars worth of stuff. Your expenses grow so much more the bigger your business gets. Everyday, if you can look and save yourself two steps or save yourself one action, that's going to add up over time. We really underestimate children in our country. They're capable of so much more than we give them credit for. And with the right support and the right tools, so many of them can do great things and I'd love to see more of that. You need to have the work ethic. Hard work covers a multitude of sins and a multitude of weaknesses. I've never met a problem I couldn't solve. You're never staying at one point, you're either growing or you're shrinking. You have to constantly be moving and adjusting and adapting. There were businesses that started, grew, and thrived during the Great Depression. So to say it's not a good time and you can't succeed, I think it's completely false. You always have lots of opportunities, but don't let the good distract you from what's the best. Work hard. Be financially responsible. Have integrity. You don't need all the best stuff to get started. You have to put things in perspective and you have to put money into the things that are going to have a return. If you don't live what you speak and speak what you live, that's going to come back and hurt you. If I'm not willing to use something on my children, I am not willing to sell it. I wasn't going to let someone else or their experience tell me what I could and could not do. I don't let other people's reality impact my reality. I don't want to get bogged down into worrying about what my competitors are doing. I want to care about my customers, I want to give my customers what they want at the best price that I can, and I've got to believe that that's going to take care of itself in the end. It was such a learning experience for my children, to know that what we do isn't just about making money so we can feed ourselves and pay our bills, it's about impacting the lives of others. I tell my children all the time, we are so blessed because we are able to work together, we are able to help people, and we're able to support ourselves doing it. I can't even imagine anything better than that. It doesn't matter what, I have to push through this. I have people counting on me to make all of this work. PJ Jonas is the co-founder at Goat Milk Stuff, a family business that creates and sells all-natural products as an alternative to chemical products that people use every day. Her company not only allows her family to work together, but it's been the vehicle to teach them about what's important in life. Those values come through in the goodness of their products and the excellence of their customer service.
There sure are a lot of animals out there that get a lot of recognition for their greatness. Dogs are a man’s best friend. Chicken’s are coveted for their delicious, healthy eggs, and their equally delicious and dynamic meat. Cows stand at the apex of the red meat world, and are also the standard for dairy products everywhere. But what about animals that are just as awesome and somehow fly under the radar of acclaim. What about the goat? Or should I say G.O.A.T? Their dairy…very low in lactose and S1 casein (another often inflammatory component of cow milk). Their meat? Gyros. Their size? Cute. Their temperament? Did you know that goats wag their tails when they’re happy? Yep, they’re pretty darn great. Today’s guest knows all about the greatness of goats and how great their dairy can be. PJ is the owner of Goat Milk Stuff which is an amazing, family run, goat milk business. They started with soap and now make just about everything you can think of. PJ is nice enough to offer a free bar of her REALLY good soap to Half Hour Intern listeners. Just visit http://www.goatmilkstuff.com/InternSoap to find out what all the hype is about.
P.J. Jonas—like many educated women—faced criticism when she left engineering to be a stay-at-home mom. Soon her problem-solving skills and creativity would be put to the test. After all, she was planning to homeschool her eight children. And raise goats. As an undergrad at the University of Virginia, making things from goat’s milk was nowhere in her plans. What started out simply as a means of getting good milk for her children produced a wide range of unanticipated discoveries—and a thriving family business called Goat Milk Stuff.
What started with an initial small batch of soap, has expanded into a host of goat milk items such as goat milk soaps, cheeses, candies, fudge, gelato and more. It’s a team effort to keep the farm running, make and ship all the products, and welcome visitors to the farm. PJ’s husband, eight children (aged 9 to 19), and six full-time employees, all work hard to promote the goodness of goat milk. Playing Small Moment In 2008, PJ realized she had some momentum going in the business, but it was not enough income to allow her husband to leave his job―unless, the family made some cutbacks and sacrifices. The entire family voted to pitch in and give up small pleasures to help invest in the family business. The Wake Up Call PJ’s wake up call came when she realized the family’s existing 3 acre farm was not going to be big enough to support their growing business. When the family bought a 36 acre farm with a lot of traffic, they decided to open up their farm to visitors. Style of Leadership PJ wants her employees and family to know it’s okay to make mistakes, and to strive to be better through continuous improvement. Current Business Challenge PJ is finding it difficult to identify good employees. Her challenge is to make better hiring decisions. What Are You Excited About? A new kitchen building and a machine milking parlor are the latest projects for Goat Milk Stuff. PJ is excited to be increasing her company’s product line with food products, in addition to soaps and body products. What Does Your Business Support System Look Like? PJ’s business support system is her family at the moment. She is interested in getting an outside perspective from other entrepreneurs, but doesn’t want to sacrifice her lifestyle. Leadership Practice Continuous learning is something PJ does in order to be the best leader she can be. Book to Develop Leadership Lady on the Hill by Howard E.
