Despite expectations of a rapidly growing sector, it's now a bleak look for goat and sheep dairy farmers.  A 2020 government-backed report indicated there would be increasing demand for non-bovine dairy alternatives.  However, last week sheep milk company Maui Milk told it's Waikato farmers to stop milking due to a lack of demand, and now the goat milk industry is facing similar woes.  Federated Farmers Goats Chair Michael Woodward told Mike Hosking that the slow response to changes in China is hurting both industries.  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We talk about where to find a tester, as well as owner-sampler and group testing. You'll learn about one-day tests, 305-day tests, DHI, and DHIR. The Goat Farm is a small family owned business that does a fabulous job marketing their products. I first met them on the alternative social media network, Gab. They have a fabulous group and are quite active on the social platform. Here is some the text from the interview: This is Lisa from Inspire to Thrive. In today's podcast, I have a guest for everyone. I chose The Goat Farm. I love their products and I love the way they've been doing their marketing and social media. I first met them over on the Alternative Gab network and they have joined X (Twitter) recently. So I wanted to welcome Heather and she has her two children with her. Hi, Heather. Hi. And I'll have my two kids introduce themselves too. I'm Madison and I'm Hunter. Hi, Madison and hi, Hunter. I have a dog named Hunter. That's so funny, I heard you. Yep. I have noticed that on on X. Yeah. 1s And, yeah, my husband, he's out working the farm right now, so he's out and about. Oh, great. So, yeah, I see you started the business. Was it around 2018 or 2019? Well, we got our first goat in 2018 and he was a buck. A few months later in 2019, we got our first doe, and she gave birth later in that year. And then we started just having way too much milk to know what to do with. We were making homemade ice cream and butter, but still couldn't consume it faster than we were getting it in. So we went to our local feed store owner and he suggested that we make goat milk soap and sell it at his store. And we started doing that. And then in 2021, we started our online business. So it's only been since 2021? Yes. Wow. That's awesome. You guys have done such a such a fabulous job. Was Gab the first social network that you joined? Yes, a hunk was the original. Yeah. June of 2021. And that's also when we created our website and started selling online. And and Gab supporters have just been amazing. They really have helped us become the business that we are. And then we then we added on, MeWe, then Truth social. And then just lately X and Instagram as well. That's so amazing. Yeah, well, and it's also nice too, because we can I mean, obviously we we advertise, but we also share our farm too with the Good Morning Brigade and other groups. And so it's kind of fun to share our animals and see other people remembering the names of our animals. And so it's one way that we share our farm with others. How many goats do you have now? Well, ask the kids for that one. Right now we have about 20 and there should be some pregnant, so we'll have more soon. Yeah, that's what we're hoping. What makes your goat soaps different from other goat's soaps? Well, one,  I think a very big reason is that we use our own raw goat milk, and many goat milk makers use inferior canned goat milk or goat milk powder. And of course, in that process, some important nutrients enzymes, even probiotics that are responsible for lactic acid can be can be destroyed. And so that's one thing, one huge reason. And of course, the reason for that is if you're using alternative goat milk, you don't have to you don't have to worry about storage for the goat milk. You don't have to worry about having land or goats or any of that or vet bills. But because we have our own goats, you know, we are able to to know that they're fed well and that we're producing quality raw goat milk in our soaps. So when you started the farm, did you think the business would go into this? No, we were just homesteading. No, we never thought that at all. And again, it was literally a kind of a dilemma. We had created a business opportunity, and even then we didn't think it would really go anywhere. But it has. And then we've kind of expanded and obviously as we've expanded, our goal now is to provide. Healthy natural skin care because we've always been health minded. We have been really careful with what we but we weren't always extremely careful with what we put on our bodies, because natural skincare can be so expensive.

Our guest today is from my home state.....well, that is if you are counting the very state that any of my ancestors ever lived in, in America, that is.  My ancestors founded two town towns in Connecticut in the 1600's, and whenever I am lucky enough to interview a guest from that great state, I have to brag about that for a moment. Coming back to present day, Amelia Withington, just finished up her 11th grade year of school and will be starting back as a senior very, very soon.  During her time in the FFA she has been creating one of my favorite, value added products - goat milk soap.  This is such a great product and business for an FFA student who raises goats and is looking to make great money. When you start looking into the benefits of goat milk soap, it almost sells itself.  And goats can be kept in a small area but still produce a large amount of milk, or in Amelia's case, raw materials!  Operating a business like this, Amelia is able to learn about agriculture production, value adding, marketing and sales.  It is a great way for a student to learn about business and industry! Amelia's business is called "Just A Girl And Her Goats Soap And Stuff" and she is selling her products in farmers markets in her area.  She has also recently obtained an alpaca, and she plans on harvesting fleece from it for another value added produce, yarn! SUPERVISED AGRICULTURAL EXPERIENCE: Goat Milk Soap Production HIGH SCHOOL: Lyman Memorial High School; Lebanon, Connecticut MASCOT: Bulldogs FFA ADVISOR: Brenda Wildes CONTACT INFORMATION FOR AMELIA WITHINGTON: Click on the picture below to be taken to the Lyman Memorial High School Website: Amelia's FFA Advisor's Email Address: Brenda.wildes@lebanonct.org Lyman Memorial High School Telephone Number: 860-642-7567 FFA LINKS: National FFA Organization Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAE's) Support FFA  Donate to FFA - One way that FFA students are able to start small businesses is through an FFA grant of $1,000.  In 2014, 141 FFA students received these grants.  With your donations, more students can get this head start - pay it forward. REASONS TO DONATE TO FFA: Only 2% of Americans grow and raise most of the food and livestock consumed by the other 98% as well as the rest of the world.  FFA is providing the needed education, training and resources to Americans that will carry that torch forward and insure that America continues to have inexpensive, quality food. Rural Communities will rely on entrepreneurship in the future for population growth and job creation.  The FFA is a major catalyst to that entrepreneurial growth. Farmers, ranchers and those working in agriculture give the rest of America incredible amounts of freedom because the search for food is as simple as going to the grocery store: “The future of American agriculture depends on the involvement and investment in America's youth, In order to prepare for the population of tomorrow, we need to encourage America's youth today, and show that careers in agriculture are profitable, rewarding, and vital.”. There are a lot of farm types and agricultural businesses that I like to romanticize.  Perhaps there is none greater than the small farm in which you must milk a few animals on a small scale every day.  I realize that this is called "being romanticized" for a reason.  In reality, the need to milk controls your schedule, no matter what the weather is, whether or not you are sick, or if it is Christmas morning - it has to be done. These demands on your time can also be a benefit when it comes to starting a farm business that has a chance of succeeding.  The demands of this type of farm weed a lot of people out.  And, on a small scale, it leaves you with time to get creative with your business model.  That is exactly what today's guest, Deb Gray, has done.  Deb milks about ten goats per day, and she spends the rest of her time adding value to that milk in the form of soaps, lotions, etc. on Harvest Hills Farm in Wooster, Ohio. This translates into Deb's business, Harvest Hills Skin Care, which she has been growing steadily for decades now.  Deb has gone through the transitions that we talk about on the show, eventually growing the business to such a size that she had to leave her day job.  It was clear in the interview with Deb that she loves this business and what she is doing because she is looking to the future.  She has a short-term and long-term vision for how the business will grow and develop and offer other products and services. In today's interview, Deb will talk about some of the challenges to getting started, the estimated start-up costs, and some of the essential pieces of equipment that were game-changers for developing her business, such as: Professional Labels A Soap Cutter Soap Molds A Bottle Filler I hope you enjoy this very informative interview about a successful, value-added, farm business.

#62: Have you thought about offering your baby goat milk in place of cow's milk foods? Because goat milk proteins form a gentler curd in the stomach and are broken down faster than cow's milk protein, goat milk formula and ingredients may be an alternative for children with troubles associated with cow milk consumption.   In this episode, I'm joined by Annie Salsberg, MSc (cand) ND of Kabrita USA. Kabrita makes a variety of goat milk foods and Annie is breaking down what sort of situations goat milk can be used for as well as what it's not used for (...for example, goat milk can't be used by people who have cow's milk protein allergy).   If you're ready to raise an independent eater and prevent picky eating then let's get started learning about baby-led weaning together! Do you ever have trouble digesting dairy? If so, you might want to give goat milk products a try. Today we're talking to Tim Vanzant of Risin' Creek Creamery. As a 35-year veteran of raising nubian goats, Tim has incredible knowledge when it comes to the nutrient makeup of goat milk and why it may be easier for humans to digest. He also happens to be one of the vendors who I make a point to visit at my local farmers market nearly every week. So, Tim and his herd of goats are an important part of my life, and I'm excited to share his knowledge with you today. Listen in to understand: Why goat milk might be a good alternative if you have trouble digesting dairy What you need to know about choosing dairy and goat milk products What it means when dairy products are labeled as raw vs. pasteurized vs. ultra pasteurized    How seasons and food sources affect the taste and nutrient profile of goat milk Why sourcing fresh, local dairy products is so important You're going to love getting to know Tim and his “diva” goats, and I hope this inspires you to get to know your local farmers and producers. If you're near Indianapolis, be sure to visit Indy Winter Farmers Market, Broad Ripple Winter Farmers Market and specialty stores such as Wildwood Market to give Risin' Creek Chevre a try. You can also check out www.risincreek.com or @RisinCreekCreamery on Facebook and Instagram for market updates (and cute pictures of goats).
