How are your magnesium levels? Probably, not that great. The truth is most of us do not have optimal magnesium levels, and that is where most of our diseases stem from. The immune system is one of the most important systems in your body to fight and prevent diseases. However, a strong immune system depends on a high vitamin D level, which is made active by a good amount of magnesium. Shockingly, magnesium is our number one deficiency, with 80%-95% of us being extremely deficient. Your cortisol increases when you get stressed or frustrated, leading to magnesium loss through the urine. If you eat sugar, processed food and drink alcohol, it eats up your magnesium to process their digestion. Since our modern lifestyle is a threat to the magnesium levels in our bodies, we need to know how to offset that and live healthier. In this episode, Kristen Bowen, the founder of Living the Good Life Naturally, joins us to share the importance of magnesium and why it is so essential for our body's function. She explains her three and half years of a health crisis and how she cracked the code with magnesium. Let's jump in! Snapshot of the Key Points from the Episode: [02:00] Kristen's journey of creating a healthy life naturally using magnesium [05:53] Why is magnesium so essential to our health? I am fascinated by how nutrition can affect our health and the role it plays in many chronic and lifestyle diseases that plague our world, and so when I heard about Kristen Bowen and Living the Good Life Naturally, I didn't hesitate to reach out. She sent me a bottle of magnesium soak and I tried it with an open mind. I don't have health issues other than my ever-present orthopedic and running problems, so I wasn't looking to cure any particular malady. However, I am a notoriously poor sleeper, and I did discover after using it that my sleeping has markedly improved. Obviously, sleeping is a major determinant in our recovery rates and other areas like alertness and productivity, so this is a welcome life enhancement. One of the athletes I coach has told me that she uses magnesium soaks to successfully lessen the frequency and severity of her migraines. This is a really good chat, and Kristen does a great job here of explaining the science behind magnesium in our bodies, what makes it an essential mineral, the issues that can arise when we don't get enough of it, and the best ways to add to our intake and absorption of it whether through foods or transdermal methods like soaks. Kristen lives in a really beautiful part of the California coast, so I think that also contributes to her upbeat demeanor when discussing magnesium. It took a complete health crash to lead Kristen Bowen to create Living the Good Life Naturally in 2002. Autoimmune issues and a series of failed surgeries left Kristen bed ridden and depressed with daily seizures. Through research and looking for outside the box solutions, she discovered that to regain her health, she needed to build a strong foundation. That foundation included Food Is Medicine and the number one building block for optimal health: magnesium. She discovered that oral magnesium was not effective and began using liquid magnesium as a foot soak, finding that the body could utilize it more effectively. As Kristen's health improved, she began to research and create natural bath and body products for herself, family, and friends with skin sensitivities. She began sharing her knowledge as she researched and found clean sources of whole food supplements and minerals. She never intended to start a business, but friends offered to pay her for her products and advice. Living the Good Life Naturally was created. Our special guest this week is Kristen Bowen! This episode is all about connecting dots on health and magnesium. As a magnesium health advocate, Kristen Bowen is passionate about helping people understand the role magnesium plays in helping the brain and body handle stress. She is a magnesium advocate, social entrepreneur, and Founder of Living The Good Life Naturally. She has spent the last two decades helping women become comfortable with their power so that they can create optimal health. It took a complete health crash that led Kristen to create Living the Good Life Naturally in 2002. A bladder surgery where titanium was put into her body left Kristen bedridden, depressed, and in a wheelchair with daily seizures. Through research and looking for outside-the-box solutions, she discovered she had Melisa syndrome. An allergic reaction to the titanium used in bladder surgery. Taking it out was crucial, but she was left with a body that did not function. Putting the pieces back required her to stop chasing symptoms and to start building a strong foundation. Starting with one-on-one consultations with clients, to farmer's markets for the bath and body line, Kristen's business quickly moved from the small kitchen and extra bedroom in her home to a retail space in Logan, Utah. She hosted a Rocky Mountain radio show for seven years on KVNU Talk Radio, where she answered questions on natural health. This led to workshops and keynote opportunities at natural health conferences. This quickly led to needing a full-time team to produce products, deal with marketing, and run our retail shop, online classes, and guest podcasting/live classes. From small beginnings in her 10X15 basement kitchen to her warehouse, store, and online business, Kristen has helped thousands of women rebuild their health foundation. As she tells her clients: “You are the CEO of your health. Let me be on your board of directors.” Living the Good Life Naturally supports the Uganda Project that provides living wages to female entrepreneurs rendering cocoa butter in communal kitchens and using that income to feed and educate their children. Kristen believes female entrepreneurs will create the change we need in the world through sharing their passion projects and creating financial freedom. Check out our links below! Today's guest is no stranger to health issues, as she's experienced them as a teenager and as an adult. After having her 4th child, Kristen Bowen started experiencing urinary incontinence. She did what many women are told to do and had surgery. Immediately after (and even during the procedure itself) Kristen's most traumatic health journey began. She started experiencing seizures, was unable to walk, confined to a wheelchair, her hair was falling out, and she got down to 74 pounds. As she searched for answers her family was running through their savings, going from doctor to doctor, even visiting the Mayo Clinic and Stanford, but no one was able to help her. It wasn't until getting to their wit's end, both financially and emotionally, that they finally received some answers from a PA willing to dig deep. And while her major symptoms improved, there was still work to be done! Kristen's story took a powerful turn after a friend suggested soaking in magnesium. Not only did the magnesium help her truly recover, but it sparked a new passion and mission! She created her own company, Living the Good Life Naturally, sourcing the very best magnesium possible to help people everywhere obtain this essential mineral in the most effective and efficient way, through the skin! This mama of four has been through it all… PCOS, VBAC, Hemorrhaging, Miscarriage, Depression, Type 1 Diabetes... and that's just scratching the surface. *I advise those listening that this story is challenging and could be triggering for some. Amy had her first child at just 18 and really struggled after the first pregnancy, feeling like a failure and not having the confidence to speak up about it. As her story continues, the hurdles she overcame grow along with her confidence to speak up. She encourages mamas to educate themselves about their health, pregnancy and beyond to know that you're not crazy or alone. This mama's vulnerability is so real and inspiring. She encourages new mamas to “take the rope.” Accept help when it's offered. “You don't need to drown, when there's so many things working against you.” I hope you find this mamas as uplifting as I did.
