MOST FAMOUS EPISODE? Last week was the 55th anniversary of perhaps the most famous episode of Star Trek, which is really saying something. It's a middle of season three episode wherein the Enterprise takes on two passengers -- one half black on the left side of their face and half white on the white; the other half white on the left and half black on the right -- that leads to an allegory or parable about Civil Rights era America. Is it overwrought or filled with thought? The grades begin at (32:18). Our Two Hander theme month continues with an episode that features guest star Frank Gorshin (aka TV's The RIddler from the 1966 Batman TV series), which allows our hosts to wonder about a famous story from Adam West's memoir in which he and Gorshin attend an orgy in the Hollywood Hills. Were you or someone you know there? We want to hear about it!But also, we want to hear your thoughts about the show. Email address dropped at episode's end. Former Batman comics writer Winston Lyon, fresh off his novel Batman vs. Three Villains of Doom, a few months later produced the novelization of Batman: The Movie, a book called Batman vs. the Fearsome Foursome. This time, for our 200th episode, we discuss the book: though based on Lorenzo Semple, Jr.'s screenplay, it betrays a different attitude toward Batman than Semple, and the Batman show in general, held. Plus, one of our favorite versions of the Batman theme, Cesar Romero interviewed by Jean Boone at the premiere of Batman: The Movie, and more of your reaction to our discussion of West and Gorshin's Shea Stadium show! Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy with Randy and Steve

For those of us of a certain age (ok, our age), Adam West was our first Batman and the legendary Frank Gorshin was our first Riddler. A gifted comic impressionist, Gorshin built a long career as a standup comic and character actor. And while his maniacal Riddler is best known, you couldn't have watched television in the 1960s and 70s without catching Frank in a sitcom, on a talk show, or logging time on The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts. As always, find longer clips below and thanks for sharing our shows. To find an easy to search archive of our past shows find us on YouTube at "Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy." And thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Gorshin? While Frank is best remembered for his Batman work, he was first a fine comic impressionist with a long list of credits. Here is a bit of Frank's act from 1964 on Ed Sullivan -- the time he "opened" for the Beatles. https://dai.ly/x4wd08m Frank Gorshin's Riddler was the breakout villain of the Adam West version of Batman. Frank played the role 10 times, plus he took the character to other shows and even issued a single in character that scraped the Billboard Top 40. Here is a nice fan-made supercut of some of the Riddler's best bits from 1966.https://youtu.be/C9aCdP83eAw   Frank Gorshin did an uncanny Burt Lancaster and an even better Dean Martin -- so what better time to deploy them both than on a Dean Martin Celebrity Roast!https://youtu.be/mJzcU8z2U14

In early 1966, Batmania was everywhere. This caused a certain (convicted tax evader) concert promoter to ask the question: Can Batman fill Shea Stadium? Adam West and Frank Gorshin were recruited to play their characters as part of a show that also included such musical luminaries as the Young Rascals and the Temptations. However, on June 25, 1966, the answer to the concert promoter's question turned out to be a resounding "No!" The Shea Stadium show has lingered as an oddity on the edges of our podcast's consciousness for some time, and now it's time to do a deep dive on it. Armed with the script for West and Gorshin's borscht-belt skit, and accounts of the show from several different sources, we look at what the show was meant to be, what it ended up being, and whether anyone who attended would have been particularly pleased with the result. The Riddler, a one-off villain in a Bill Finger/Dick Sprang comic book story in 1948, languished for nearly two decades until, in 1965, Gardner Fox and Sheldon Moldoff happened to bring him back… just as a certain TV producer, William Dozier, was researching the idea of making a Batman TV show. Riddler ended up in the premiere episode, played by Frank Gorshin, and Gorshin was nominated for an Emmy for the role. Thus was the Riddler cemented as one of Batman’s greatest foes. So the ’66 show is responsible for The Riddler’s prominence, but didn’t it also determine some specifics of the character? How he acts? How he dresses? How he talks? The show’s influence over how the Riddler was played lasted decades. In this episode, we’re joined by a voice actor who met Gorshin and has played several versions of the Riddler himself, Wally Wingert, to discuss these aspects of the Riddler, and explore the approach of his alter-ego, Frank Gorshin. This is a podcast where Mark and Ian discuss (and rant) about all things Batman! Ever wonder why The Riddler is the best Batman villain of the 1966 Batman show? Well the simple answer is Frank Gorshin. Gorshin is a master comedian and impressionist and by the forth time he dons the green leotard he is allowed to release his performing brilliance in full force. These two episodes are not well written and the story is pretty nonsensical. But none of that matters because The Riddler is impersonating Charlie Chaplin, making a silent film, throwing pies and robbing vaults as a cowboy. It is all a joy to watch. For Movie Swap Mark watched The Game (1997) and Ian watched Winnie The Pooh (2011). Keep an eye our for our new YouTube show and Movie Swap is moving from the podcast to video form on YouTube! The appearance of Biljo White's fanzine BATMANIA was well timed. Not only did it contain coverage of, and fan reaction to, the New Look Batman of the comics, but also covered the mid-sixties resurgence of the 1940s Batman serials, and meteoric rise and fall of the '66 TV show. While some Batmanians accepted that Hollywood was never going to give them a better filmed Batman than this, others railed against the show "making fun of" the Dynamic Duo, and placed much of the blame squarely on Lorenzo Semple's shoulders. Still, Batmania turns out to be not only a source of Batman '66 reviews and criticism, but first-hand reporting on events and people directly related to the show, and some surprising bits of information. This week we were very sad to learn of the death of actor Adam West.  While his career was indelibly linked to the television adaptation of Bill Finger and Bob Kane's The Batman, West also gave the character a truly iconic introduction to the world.  His Bat was a Pop Art essay in high camp, a performance that creators in comics and movies spent half a century responding to - sometimes aggressively. Glen Weldon, whose book The Caped Crusade we highly recommend, has commemorated the actor here.  In other news from film, we discuss what the critical drubbing received by The Mummy means for the next cab off the studio franchise rank Dark Universe. Has the 'Marvel Studio formula' succeeded for any other franchise besides Marvel's own? And can it then be considered a formula? When did movies become advertisements for other movies instead of telling self-contained stories? As always, you can find us on Facebook and Twitter, and give us a rating or review on iTunes.

We’re celebrating two years! Batman is celebrating… well, we’re not sure how many. But there’s a new Riddler in town, and he’s got a mustache! The question mark on the Riddler’s costume is appropriate, given how many questions are raised by this arc: John Astin isn’t necessarily inferior to Frank Gorshin, but how do their performances differ? How might Gorshin have handled this script? Why didn’t Gorshin appear in the 2nd season? How do three intersecting cuts of a pie give one seven pieces? Why was the charity money for Batman’s anniversary put in, of all things, a golden calf? Is sodium dichloride really used to seed clouds? Also, we look at a couple of new contributions by Nelson Riddle in this arc, the uncredited cast member who had bit parts in several all-time classic films, and much more. Yeah, for this they brought Frank Gorshin back?  As kids, John and his guest were just excited to see The Riddler, but they are not as loving of this episode now as adults.  What's wrong with it?  How has their view of it changed and how did it change from one of the earlier versions of the script? Look at all the amazing comedians in this 1968 film! Surely, it must be hilarious? You’re first clue that the assumption is wrong? We’re watching it for this podcast. Adjust your listening EQ settings on your audio device from pop to Carol Channing and have a listen to the episode. No streaming of this steaming pile. Watch this film (at your own risk), on Amazon. The cast: Groucho Marx Carol Channing Jackie Gleason Frankie Avalon (who isn’t Frankie Valli) Cesar Romero Slim Pickens Mickey Rooney Burgess Meredith Peter Lawford Richard Kiel (Jaws from the Bond films) Richard Donner (Exidor from Mork & Mindy) And on with the show! Dan & Chris heard of this film’s awful reputation on Gilbert Gottfried’s Amazing Colossal Podcast! Otto Preminger directed this comedy. He sounds like an interesting character. He desperately needs an editor. Reviewer Vincent Canby of the Times wrote a devastating critique. Guess who was on set? Roger Ebert, who shares another look at the Otto & his process. It’s the sixties, so Gleason can’t get away with beating his wife anymore so he pistol whips a hippie. The movie of Batman villains. (Preminger, Romero, Meredith, Gorshin) Carol Channing is a proto-Big Bird. Dan get’s a haircut because of the poster that goes around a corner. Everyone gets their Reagan impression on. Well… Gleason sneaks onto Alcatraz & Dan suggests you visit the park yourself. Austin Pendleton is really great in this film. You may remember him from My Cousin Vinny. Who can do Carol Channing impressions? Ryan Stiles of course. Frank Gorshin plays The Man. No riddle, he’s just The Man at Alcatraz. Is that the apartment from Dcotor Goldfoot? God, Groucho Marx, plays bumper pool with his mistress. Groucho is also part of Gleason’s acid trip as a loose screw, get it? Paul wonders how secure Crazy Hippie Encryption is and Dan answers, “420 bit.” Old men pretending to trip on acid. The garbage song must have inspired Stomp! This movie has a theme song and you don’t want to click this because it “drills into your head.” The best part of the film is the end, because it is over, but also ALL of the credits are sung. Gary Larson, creator of The Far Side, apologizes for making an Ishtar joke. Recommendations:Land of the Lost, Brain Donors and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. His daytime alter ego is mild-mannered (well, that part is a stretch) on-air talent at WRAR Radio Station in Virginia. He actually gets paid to sit on his butt and run his mouth! His “edumacation” is from UNC-Wilmington and the Columbia School of Broadcasting. When he is not gracing the podcasting airways with his comedic stylings, you can find Billy Flynn on Xbox Live (flynn71), rockin' out on Guitar Hero or Rock Band, watching movies, reading comics, working out, or posting on the forums at Geek Radio Daily.com (ding!)            In his twenty plus years as writer and film journalist, Dan Persons has interviewed the likes of Paul Verhoeven, Wes Craven, Stuart Gordon, Satoshi Kon and John Kricfalusi; published the well-received novella, "A Game of the Apocalypse", in The Ultimate Silver Surfer, edited by The Chronic Rift's own Keith R.A. Decandido; and been an occasional, and somewhat peculiar, guest on the public access incarnation of the Rift. He presently is the host of Mighty Movies Temple of Bad, Mighty Movie Podcast, and The Cinefantastique Podcast when he isn't haunting the dining room of his local Popeye's.       A native of Toledo, Ohio, Jim Beard was introduced to comic books at an early age by his father, who passed on to him a love for the medium and the pulp characters who preceded it. After decades of reading, collecting and dissecting comics, Jim became a published writer when he sold a story to DC Comics in 2002. Since that time he's written official Star Wars and Ghostbusters comic stories and contributed articles and essays to several volumes of comic book history. His prose work includes GOTHAM CITY 14 MILES, a book of essays on the 1966 Batman TV series; SGT. JANUS, SPIRIT-BREAKER, a collection of pulp ghost stories featuring an Edwardian occult detective; MONSTER EARTH, a giant monster anthology; and CAPTAIN ACTION: RIDDLE OF THE GLOWING MEN, the first pulp prose novel based on the classic 1960s action figure. Currently, Jim provides regular content for Marvel.com, the official Marvel Comics website, and is a regular columnist for Toledo Free Press. TheRiddler has plans for Batman in the form of a lawsuit claiming false arrest, but Batman knows the Riddler is not as innocent as he seems. Can Batman deduce the Riddler's scheme from the puzzles he's hidden inside the lawsuit?  Can he figure out that Robin isn't Robin?  And can we find all the ideas that would be repeated throughout the series that first led to its success and would ultimately lead to its downfall? Comment on the episode here or write batcavepodcast@gmail.com. Dayton Ward is the author of numerous media tie-in fiction works in such realms as Star Trek and The 4400.  He is also the author of such original works as Counterstrike, The Last World War, Book 2 and The Genesis Protocol.
