In this episode, we catch up with Boy Golden backstage at High Sierra Music Festival for a conversation that goes well beyond the music. The Winnipeg singer-songwriter opens up about The Church of Better Daze, why songwriting has become a spiritual practice for him, and his belief that music and creative expression can be deeply healing. We also get into the story behind the name Boy Golden, his early years playing hundreds of shows, his love of albums, the way he approaches songwriting, and why his ultimate mission isn't simply to make people listen — it's to make them want to create something themselves. For Boy Golden, a life filled with as many “creative days” as possible is a life well lived.Only in the Green Room — Where Artists Remain Human.#BoyGolden #HighSierraMusicFestival #OnlyInTheGreenRoom #ChurchOfBetterDaze #SingerSongwriter #IndieMusic #Songwriting #MusicPodcast

What was supposed to be a conversation about the Grateful Dead quickly becomes something else entirely when photographer Jay Blakesberg and singer-songwriter Steve Poltz join us at High Sierra. The two give us a preview of Working Man's Dead, their wonderfully unpredictable live collaboration combining Jay's iconic Grateful Dead photography and storytelling with Steve's music — including songs he writes spontaneously in response to stories and images he hasn't seen coming. They talk about Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh and the strange magic of improvisation. Jay also recounts watching an all-white-clad Steve Poltz make his way toward the rail at the Sphere as the crowd seemingly parted for him “like Moses” — leading Jay to describe Steve as “a cross between Bob Dylan and Moses.”And then things go completely off the rails.Charlton Heston. Planet of the Apes. Paper routes. Behind the Green Door. A mysterious bag of vintage magazines. And several moments when we completely lose control of our own interview.Underneath the insanity, though, is a friendship between two gifted storytellers and a shared love of the Grateful Dead, spontaneity and the kind of live experience that can never happen exactly the same way twice. This is Steve Poltz and Jay Blakesberg — unfiltered, unscripted and very much Only in the Green Room.Steve Poltz, Jay Blakesberg, Grateful Dead, Grateful Dead stories, Bob Weir, Jerry Garcia, Workingman's Dead, Grateful Dead photography, High Sierra Music Festival, Only in the Green Room

You Down With YPP?Episode Description:I break down YouTube's latest changes to its Partner Program, including doubled watch-hour requirements and higher Shorts monetization thresholds ahead of the February 2027 deadline. What if a dream changed the course of a band?Don Was joins Jay Lane and Only in the Green Room for a remarkable conversation about Bob Weir, Rob Wasserman, Wolf Bros and the music that continues to connect them all.Don shares the story of the phone call from Bob Weir that started with something extraordinary: Rob Wasserman had come to Bob in a dream — and told him why he had introduced Don and Bob decades earlier. That call helped lead to the formation of Wolf Bros. From Don locking himself in a New York hotel room for 10 days to learn six songs they never ended up playing, to Bob eventually giving him the advice that changed the way he approached the music:“Just forget about all this and be yourself.”Don and Jay also reflect on the enormous influence of Rob Wasserman, revisit Blues for Allah 50 years later, and talk about what makes this music continue to transcend generations.A backstage conversation about friendship, fearlessness, musical legacy — and the people who change the course of our lives.Watch the full conversation on Only in the Green Room.#DonWas #JayLane #BobWeir #WolfBros #RobWasserman #GratefulDead #BluesForAllah #OnlyInTheGreenRoom

What started as a conversation about Bob Weir and RatDog turned into one of the most personal stories we've ever captured. In this episode of Only in the Green Room, drummer Jay Lane shares what it was like joining Bob Weir and Rob Wasserman despite knowing very little about the Grateful Dead, learning songs from Heaven Help the Fool, navigating unpredictable RatDog setlists, and witnessing Bob's determination to keep creating after Jerry Garcia's passing. Then the conversation takes an unexpected turn.Jay opens up about his own adoption story, his remarkable adoptive mother, Mary D. Lane, and discovering his biological mother, prior to his birth, had a daughter with acclaimed jazz bassist Donald Rafael Garrett. As the story unfolds Jay pieces together a long-hidden mosaic of family, music, and coincidence, sharing how deeply his life had been intertwined with San Francisco's legendary music scene long before he ever knew it.This is a story about music, identity, family, mentorship, and the incredible coincidences that can shape a life.If you enjoy authentic conversations with the artists behind the music, please Like, Subscribe, and share this episode.#OnlyInTheGreenRoom #JayLane #BobWeir #RatDog #GratefulDead #AdoptionStory #MusicPodcast #BehindTheMusic#SweetwaterMusicHall #David Nelson, #Ramblin' Jack Elliott, #Lorin Rowan, #Matt Jaffe, #Matty Michna, #Jay Lane# Barry Sless, #Jason Crosby, #Samson Grisman#Bobby & The Midnites - I Want To Live In America 1984 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWscxdleZzIYouTube: @inmotion68"Not Fade Away" - Bob Weir and Wolf Bros | 8/25/2019 | LOCKN' 2019 | Relix YouTube: @RelixMaghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfnfGM77Ob8https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wdteIsK1qUhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6a-A7gP9Mc

Kyla Nicole Healey explains how a trained competitive dancer from Long Island pivoted into an independent jazz and indie-pop singer-songwriter career, why she refuses to sign away her masters, and what it took to record at Abbey Road Studios in London without label backing. The Green Room crew press Healey on the realities of fusing jazz roots with contemporary, folk, and Middle Eastern influences on her debut EP, Butterfly, releasing June 28th on vinyl. The conversation covers how Healey built her sound by listening to Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan on vinyl records with her father since age three, performed at Alvin Ailey City Center in New York, traveled with the Zodiac Dance Company, and eventually followed her intuition to Los Angeles at 21 with almost no industry connections. A Long Island dancer turned genre-fusing vocalist, Healey represents a growing wave of independent artists choosing creative ownership over label infrastructure at every stage of their careers.
Michael Mullins (trombone) and Bradford Lewis (guitar) — two more members of the Legacy Coalition, and bandmates in their own project — join us to fill in the rest of the story. They walk us through how the Coalition really came together: an idea years in the making, a chance meeting at a recording session, and the moment a teenage keyboard player named River showed up and made the whole thing click. They talk about their new single "Brand New Day," a music video shoot funded in part by a Jazz and Heritage Foundation grant, and the weight — and the freedom — of carrying a family legacy forward. As Bradford puts it: "our job is not to fill their shoes, our job is to wear our own."Only In The Green Room goes backstage with the artists carrying jam, funk, roots, and Americana music forward.
Backstage at the New Orleans Jazz Museum during French Quarter Fest, we caught up with Cyril Neville, his son Omari Neville, guitarist Jake Eckert, and his son River — the teenage keyboard player who rounded out the lineup of the Legacy Coalition, a band built entirely from the sons and daughters of New Orleans music royalty. The conversation moves through what it means to inherit a sound rather than learn it — from sleeping on drum risers at Tipitina's as a kid, to stepping onstage next to your own father and realizing the torch has already passed. Cyril talks about the "osmosis" of growing up around the music. Omari opens up about his debut album, out now with a release party at the Louisiana Music Factory. And the whole crew previews their upcoming set at High Sierra Music Festival.Only In The Green Room goes backstage with the artists carrying jam, funk, roots, and Americana music forward.
If you've been white-knuckling your way through a season and calling it productivity, this one is going to hit. Sometimes grief isn't about loss… sometimes it's about the story you've been telling yourself so many times it started to feel like fact.A few weeks into summer, I caught my own brain running a narrative I didn't even realize had taken over. I was ending every day feeling like everything was too much and the issue wasn't my schedule but instead the stories I was telling myself. Mid-July horror gets mutated, vengeful, infectious, and lost in the woods in this episode of This Week in Horror History, covering the week of July 13 through July 19. This time, we're digging into mad-scientist island nightmares, supernatural revenge literature, one extremely angry killer whale, a science-fiction body-horror classic, biological vampires, and the tiny independent movie that changed horror marketing forever.Inside this episode:July 13, 1977 — The Island of Dr. Moreau opens in U.S. theatersBurt Lancaster brings H.G. Wells' nightmare of science without conscience to the screen in a sweaty, pulpy story filled with animal-human mutations, unchecked authority, and a scientist convinced that nature would be better if he personally rearranged it.July 14, 2020 — The Only Good Indians is publishedStephen Graham Jones delivers one of modern horror literature's sharpest supernatural reckonings as four Blackfeet men discover that something from their past has memory, purpose, and antlers waiting in the dark.July 15, 1977 — Orca opens in New YorkThe post-Jaws creature-feature wave gets stranger, angrier, and surprisingly tragic when a killer whale driven by grief, intelligence, and patience begins pursuing the human responsible for an unforgivable act.July 16, 1958 — The Fly releases in the United StatesA scientist, a teleportation machine, and one tiny insect create one of science-fiction horror's most unforgettable transformations, turning a dream of human progress into a cruel nightmare of mixed bodies and irreversible mistakes.Deep-Cut Spotlight — The StrainGuillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan drag vampires out of the velvet cape and into the quarantine zone as a passenger plane lands at JFK filled with the dead. What follows treats vampirism like a biological outbreak capable of spreading through New York while officials argue, deny, and react too late.Horror Birthdays This Week:Patrick Stewart, Larry Cohen, Corey Feldman, and James Brolin enter the birthday roll, bringing connections to Lifeforce, Green Room, It's Alive, Q, The Stuff, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, The Lost Boys, Gremlins, and The Amityville Horror.Weekly Recommendation — The Blair Witch ProjectThree student filmmakers enter the Maryland woods with cameras, recording equipment, and a local legend, creating a landmark of found-footage horror built from darkness, disorientation, improvised performances, and the terrifying possibility that the footage might be real.Plus, Weekly Spooky returns Wednesday with another fresh original horror story, followed by more terrifying history, strange mysteries, movie talk, and unexplained broadcasts throughout the week. From The Island of Dr. Moreau and The Only Good Indians to Orca, The Fly, The Strain, and The Blair Witch Project, this week in horror history proves that terror can spread through laboratories, guilty memories, dark water, crowded cities, and one cursed corner of the internet.
We use AI in a digital world - but its future may depend on the physical one. Behind every prompt, agent and model, sits a system that needs to be built, funded and powered. And as organisations and countries race to adopt AI, the demand for access is accelerating. So could a technology that's built to allow limitless thinking, end up limited by a country's network and ability to build? Because the future of AI depends on compute capacity. That depends on infrastructure. And that depends on energy. And it's those elements which determine the price we all pay to use it. Tune in to find out: Why AI is creating a new race for energy and infrastructure Why data centres could become a strategic resource How energy-intensive AI could also help solve sustainability challenges Why the future of AI depends on decisions being made today This episode is part of The Green Room's series exploring the AI future for the UK. Sean Madden built a comedy career out of desperation, a camo wig, and fake job interviews — and the Florida Man character that started as a pandemic joke now draws millions of views and corporate clients who pay him to prank their own HR departments. This conversation on Green Room Radio traces the full arc from selling solar door-to-door in Riverside, California to headlining 500-seat theaters across the country. The episode covers how regional comedy audiences differ between East Coast and West Coast crowds, why Madden tailors his material city by city, and the specific crowd-work tactics he deploys when a set starts going sideways. The Green Room crew press Madden on the real economics of standup comedy — including the eight-year runway before he earned serious money and the 10,000-hour threshold he considers non-negotiable.A comedian who turned rejection letters into a viral character offers a masterclass in persistence, audience psychology, and knowing when desperation is the funniest material you have.

What can a singing bird, a neighborhood walk, and a pair of puppet adventurers teach us about awe? Sit down with Wowsabout! creators Dorien Davies and Halle Stanford to discuss helping kids—and grownups—find wonder wherever they are.Summary: Kids may be natural wonder-seekers, but how do we help them hold onto that sense of awe as they grow up? On this episode of The Science of Happiness, we talk with Wowsabout! creators Dorien Davies and Halle Stanford about creating a PBS Kids special inspired by awe, the science behind wonder, and why small moments—a bird singing at dawn, a blooming jasmine vine, or a walk around the block—can help us feel more connected to ourselves and the world around us. Together, they explore how cultivating awe can foster curiosity, resilience, creativity, and belonging for children and adults alike. How To Do This Practice: Slow down and set an intention: Pause your usual routine and decide to look for something that inspires wonder. Notice what you feel: Tune into physical sensations, like the warmth of the sun, a cool breeze, or your feet touching the ground. Look closely at your surroundings: Pay attention to colors, shapes, textures, or movement that you might normally overlook. Listen with curiosity: Notice the sounds around you—the birds, the wind, distant voices, or the hum of your neighborhood. Follow what captures your attention: If something sparks your interest or amazement, spend a moment with it instead of rushing on. Reflect on your experience: At the end of your walk, consider what surprised you and how it made you feel more connected to the world around you.
