David T. Beito's most recent book, and the subject of this conversation, is The New Deal's War On the Bill of Rights: The Untold Story of FDR's Concentration Camps, Censorship, and Mass Surveillance (buy it through the link!), published by the Independent Institute in 2023. The presidency of Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the New Deal have now largely passed from living memory.  When I was in junior high school in the 1970s, however, many of the teachers had not only lived through the New Deal but remembered it as an almost sacred moment.  We watched scratchy black-and-white movies in class about the great success of FDR's New Deal in ending the Great Depression, the soundtrack blaring with “Happy Days Are Here Again.”  David Beito's book is about the dark side of all that, the almost crazy abuse of American civil liberties under FDR's administration.  FDR's Congressional allies, including future Supreme Court Justices Hugo Black and Sherman Minton, rifled through individual tax returns and more than 3 million Western Union telegrams to find dirt on outspoken opponents of the New Deal. They proposed criminalizing "false" news. They used regulatory power and private coercion to drive virtually any criticism of the New Deal from the new medium of radio.  And, finally, they put more than 100,000 Americans of Japanese descent into concentration camps built by the famous Works Progress Administration, and kept them there long after any argument for military necessity had passed.  And that isn't the end of it by any means! And please listen to the last part, in which we discuss the frosty even if perhaps unsurprising silence with which academic historians have responded to David's excellent book. A hundred years ago, much of America was having a wild and crazy party. Forgot about the labor wars. Forgot about the spread of Jim Crow and the KKK marching in Washington. Forgot about the doors banging shut on immigrants.Don't be a party pooper, jake. The war was over. The plague of the “Spanish Flu” was declining. The stock market was soaring. Oh sure, alcohol was still prohibited, but… shhhhh, wink, wink, nod, nod … we know a place …It was The Roarin' Twenties. Flappers. Raccoon coats. Cars. Radios. Records. Jazz! And Here Comes JackWhat a great time to be a songwriter. Into that happy, boozy blur of an age walked young Jack Yellen. Born to a Jewish family in Raczki, Poland, Jack was 5 when his family bought him to America. Reared in Buffalo, NY, he began writing songs in high school.Later, after graduating from the University of Michigan in 1913, Yellen worked as a reporter for The Buffalo Courier, but he continued writing songs on the side. Before long, it was journalism that was on the side as his music moved front and center.Actually, Jack got a jump on the jazz. Hits came quickly for Jack, who seemed to have a feel for the Twenties even before the Twenties arrived. Collaborating with George L. Cobb on Tin Pan Alley, Yellen wrote a string of “Dixie” songs, such as “Alabama Jubilee” and “Are You from Dixie?” both in 1915. His real royalty gold, though, was struck when he teamed up with Milton Ager. They entered the music publishing business as part owners of the Ager-Yellen-Bornstein Music Co., for which Jack penned some of the signature songs of the era.“Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now),” “Hard-Hearted Hannah, the Vamp of Savannah,” “Ain't She Sweet?,” “Happy Feet,” and “Happy Days Are Here Again” all were Jack Yellen originals.Washington at Valley Forge…And right in middle of that rush of riches came our our all-time favorite of Jack's creation, “Crazy Words, Crazy Tune. (Vo Do De O).” Yellen and Ager wrote it in 1926. The earliest known versions of the song were recorded on Oct. 29, 1926, by Irving Aaronson and the Commanders, and on Feb. 3, 1927, by The Varsity Eight, a pseudonym for The California Ramblers, which included legend-to-be Tommy Dorsey on trombone. The song launched onto the goofy lyrics stage 30 years before its hey day in the 1950s. (I'll see you ‘Vo Do De O' and raise you a ‘Be-bop-a-lula,' a ‘Shama lama ding dong' and a ‘wop bop a loo bop a lop bam boom'”)Soon “Crazy Words, Crazy Tune” became a core song for hokum and jug bands around the world. In fact, we learned it from Jim Kweskin's jug rendition in 1963.Our Take on the TuneThe Flood always has a few novelty tunes in its back pocket, either to liven up a show or maybe to just give ourselves a laugh at the weekly rehearsal. And this one is, of course, is how we get all that big grant money, because it's about history. Well, sort of. There is some question of whether George Washington ever played ukulele, but we're pretty sure he knew a red-hot mama or two ….Flood LoreIncidentally, the song also plays a small role in a Flood Lore. Back in October 2014, the band was part of Marshall University's wonderful stage production of “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” doing a 30-minute pre-show set at each performance of the play's run in the beautiful Joan C. Edwards Theater. Click the button below for a story that grew out of that fun week of shows: This is a public episode. Anger now dominates American politics. It wasn't always so. “Happy Days Are Here Again” was FDR's campaign song in 1932. By contrast, candidate Kamala Harris's 2020 campaign song was Mary J. Blige's “Work That” (“Let ‘em get mad / They gonna hate anyway”). Both the left and right now summon anger as the main way to motivate their supporters. Post-election, both sides became even more indignant. The left accuses the right of “insurrection.” The right accuses the left of fraud. This is a book about how we got here―about how America changed from a nation that could be roused to anger but preferred self-control, to a nation permanently dialed to eleven. Cue EGOT Winner Marvin Hamlisch plunking away slowly in C Major at a piano, even though Babs wanted the song in a minor key. Nobody puts Hamlisch in a minor third.) "Memories... light the corners of my mind. Misty, watercolor memories... of the way... we were..." No, we're not talking to Barbra this week. Sorry to disappoint. But, now that you've already been floored by the lack of Streisand, have "No More Tears" and rejoice in the meaning behind the weird symbolism attempted above - we have to admit we're "Guilty" as we've got a clip show this week, you lucky "People." (How many Streisand songs can we reference here? You don't want to take the under on that bet, friendo.) This week, we "Send in the Clowns," our boys Sid and Keith, as we do a deep dive back to Episodes 6 through 10 and grab the best gobbets of wisdom from them because ... let's be real, the helpful hints found therein are "Evergreen." Our boys begin with looking back at their chat in Episode 6 with Justin Koen on how best to get buy-in from your employees. Given the Era of Economic Uncertainty we currently find ourselves in, that could be wonderful wisdom to have if you don't want your current, great employees to just be a "Memory." Episode 7, our boys wax poetic and ask themselves "What Are You Doing The Rest of Your Life," dropping knowledge bombs about how to create the life you want. Since we're #TeamNo Spoilers, you'll have to actually listen to get these fun facts or you'll be "Left in the Dark." Episode 8, it's our old friend Mike Michalowicz and the Pumpkin Plan, where you go from "Just Leave Everything to Me" mode and learn how to take a business from the launch phase to soaring way up there in "A Piece of Sky." Don't get caught in the cycle of "Sell It, Do It, Sell It, Do It" (That's not a Streisand song - just a quote from the episode. Bet it would be a bop, though) - listen and learn how to make your business "The Best Thing You've Ever Done." Episode 9, we get to talk to a mentor of Sid's, Steve Bousquet, and gab about how "Being Good Isn't Good Enough" - you have to be open, honest and real with your employees or you'll be watching them go, quietly saying to yourself "I Won't Last a Day Without You." And, finally, Episode 10 - Are you still with us? "Papa, Can You Hear Me?" (You knew Yentl was coming) ... it's "The Second Time Around" for more awesome approaches for actualizing employee buy-in. Again, no more clues here, but trust us when we say the tips and tricks we've got here ain't no "Second Hand Rose." We know some of you may not love a clip show, but we say "Don't Rain On My Parade" because "Happy Days Are Here Again." So, "Put On Your Sunday Clothes" and enjoy this week's entertaining episode. On the eighth episode of American History Too! we delve into one of the great crisis moments in American History – the Great Depression.  We’re joined by special guest, Alastair Duthie (@d_alastair), who helps guide us through the historiographical minefield that surrounds Presidents’ Herbert Hoover and Franklin Roosevelt in their attempts to bring the American economy and people back from the brink.  We begin by explaining some of the reasons for the global financial collapse of the 1920s and 1930s.  Malcolm inspires his own great depression as he dips his toe into the cold waters of economic history, Alastair reminds us that the 1920s was not all it has been cracked up to be, and Mark wholeheartedly refuses to ever discuss the t*riff.  Also, it is decided that perhaps the much maligned Herbert Hoover was not the twentieth century’s James Buchanan (more of a Franklin Pierce, perhaps). The second half of the podcast is devoted to a consideration of Roosevelt’s New Deal and the surrounding historiography – what was the New Deal trying to achieve?  What is its legacy?  And how have the political leanings of historians continued to influence the New Deal debate?  Finally, after all the doom and gloom of the Great Depression we end the podcast on the more optimistic note of Happy Days Are Here Again. Thanks again for listening and we will back in two weeks to discuss the Red Scare of the 1940s and 1950s! Cheers, Mark and Malcolm   Reading List -          Brian E. Currently appearing with "big sister" Barbra Streisand on tour, Roslyn Kind has made a big name for herself thanks to acclaimed recordings, appearances in concert, on Broadway and television. The London Times: “To say she is superb would be an understatement.” L.A. Times: "Forget that Roslyn Kind is Barbra Streisand's kid sister. She's to good and too special to have to worry about comparisons..." The New York Post: “She’s so good on so many levels; it’s difficult to categorize her.  This elegant, beautiful, petite, dynamo delight rules the stage with a royal command that demands adoration from every seat in the house.” Listen to Roz and Barbra sing together on tour & revisit our in-depth interview with Roslyn, just a few months before she hit the road with her sister Barbra.
