One of the most high-profile sports in the Olympic Summer Games in Paris will be basketball. The USA Basketball teams have been some of the most dominant in Olympic history in any sport. The women's team looks to extend its streak to eight consecutive gold medals and the men's team looks for its fifth in a row, having only lost six games in Olympic history. The U.S. also will have teams in the blossoming 3x3 competition that will be held on Place du Concorde in one of the more stunning locations in Paris. At the center of it is Chief Executive Officer Jim Tooley, who has been with USA Basketball for over 30 years. In this video interview, Donovan Bailey, Olympic gold medal sprinter, discusses his career, his thoughts about success and his message to young athletes. Bailey is in Calgary speaking Tuesday April 30 at the annual Champion Chats fundraiser for Classroom Champions. He's also guest speaker Thursday May 30 at the Calgary Italian Sportsmen's Dinner. HERE'S THE PUBLICIST MATERIAL FOR HIS BOOK A memoir of Olympic glory, the value of mentorship and the courage to champion your own excellence, from the long-reigning world's fastest man, Canadian sprinting legend Donovan Bailey. From the lush fields of his boyhood in Jamaica, to the basketball courts of Oakville, where he came of age in one of Canada's most thriving cultural mosaics, to his sprint toward double Olympic gold for Canada in Atlanta in 1996, Donovan Bailey got a long way on natural talent. But he also learned that in the bureaucratic world of Canadian sports, an athlete who didn't come up in the system needed to take charge of his fate if he was going to become the world's best. As he ascended from outsider to dominant athlete, others didn't always understand the rigour at work behind Bailey's confident demeanor. He'd learned from watching Muhammad Ali that a champion needed to act like a champion. But media grew fixated on the sprinter's immodesty, the likes of which they never saw from Canadian athletes, especially track athletes in the wake of the Ben Johnson doping scandal at Seoul in 1988. Bailey was having none of it, and when he called out Canada's subtle racism and contradicted the prevailing idea most Canadians had of their country, he left in his wake a media uproar and cracked wide open the nation's moral complacency. In addition to his unforgettable 100-metre and 4×100 relay gold-medal sprints in Atlanta, Bailey's track career was a litany of records and rare accomplishments, including his audacious 1997 race in Toronto's SkyDome against American 200-metre Olympic champion Michael Johnson to determine who was really the world's fastest man. There was no disputing the result. Bailey had been coached in success before he was seriously coached in athletics. Following the lead of his father, a machinist-turned-real estate investor, Bailey became a millionaire by the age of 21, an experience he continues to draw on as an entrepreneur and philanthropist. Frank about his dominance on the track and unapologetic for expecting as much of those around him as he expects of himself, Undisputed is an athlete's story that refuses to settle for second best. Donovan Bailey PRESS RELEASE Calgary, AB – The annual Champion Chats fundraiser luncheon held April 30, 2024 at Hyatt Regency Calgary is now sold out. At over 55 tables of guests, this year's Champion Chats will be the biggest ever and brings together over 450 of Calgary business leaders, Olympians and Paralympians, and community leaders to support the work of Classroom Champions, a non-profit dedicated to providing specialized programming for high-needs schools across Western Canada – and across North America – by partnering students and classrooms with athlete mentors. “This year's event is the biggest one yet with dozens of CEOs joining us for this incredible afternoon meant to educate and inspire us while providing needed funds for programs close to home,” said Steve Mesler, President and CEO of Classroom Champions. “It's clear that there is a lot of excitement about hearing from our stellar line-up of athletes who will speak about their own experiences achieving personal excellence.” The 2024 event panel includes: Donovan Bailey: Widely regarded as one of the greatest professional athletes of all time, Bailey won a gold medal for Canada in the men's 100m at the 1996 Olympic Summer Games and set a world record with a time of 9.84 seconds. He works to uplift organizations that aspire to achieve greatness. In October 2023, he released his memoir, “Undisputed”. Luke Willson: As a Canadian former professional football player, Luke played tight end in the National Football League (NFL) and is one of the few Canadian athletes ever to win a Super Bowl. He spent his first five NFL seasons with the Seattle Seahawks where he was a fan favourite, winning Super Bowl XLVIII with the team. He retired from the NFL in 2021 and is an NFL analyst on TSN. Waneek Horn-Miller: As one of Canada's few Indigenous Olympians, Waneek has used her unique experiences in life and sport combined with a passion for her culture to influence Indigenous and non-Indigenous leadership in sport and wellness. A Mohawk from the Kahnawake Mohawk Territory near Montreal, Waneek was behind the lines during the Oka crisis in 1990 when a Canadian soldier's bayonet stabbed her. It was a near-death experience that marked a turning point in her life. Waneek is one of North America's most inspiring female Indigenous speakers. Long-time panel moderator for Champion Chats, Tara Slone is back to host the panel and will lead the conversation about what it takes to achieve excellence, both personally and as a community — a theme that is sure to resonate with the entrepreneurs and leaders in the room. Donovan Bailey adds, “I'm thrilled to be a part of this year's fundraiser and am honoured to work with Classroom Champions to raise awareness about the critical need to provide kids with skills to meet their challenges. I look forward to inspiring Calgarians and supporting Classroom Champions' great work.” Champion Chats will also celebrate the 25 Calgary-based energy companies known as the “Energizing Communities Collective” who are focused on their commitment to creating a long-term positive impact within their operating areas across B.C., Alberta, and Saskatchewan. Gold members of the Collective include Athabasca Oil Corporation (new), ARC Resources, Crescent Point, Headwater Exploration, PETRONAS (new), Spartan Delta, Pembina Pipeline Corporation, Tamarack Valley Energy, and Tourmaline Oil Corp. “It's amazing to see how our locally based charity is growing at such a rapid pace and to see how our impact extends to classrooms across North America and around the globe. The local business community is making that happen, says Mesler.” He adds that Champion Chats is an opportunity to celebrate the non-profit's extraordinary momentum. Funds raised at Champion Chats will directly benefit children by providing them with athlete mentors, as well as supporting teachers with the Classroom Champions curriculum. More about Classroom Champions Classroom Champions is a nonprofit charity that has impacted over a million students to thrive socially, emotionally, and academically through the mentorship and mindsets of world-class athletes. Working with 300+ Olympic, Paralympic, university student-athletes and professional athletes who volunteer as mentors and over 5,000 teachers, Classroom Champions programs and curriculum has worked with predominantly underserved, rural, and Indigenous communities across the continent. One of the biggest sports in each Olympic Summer Games is swimming, which has been part of the Olympic program since 1896. But what casual fans of swimming may not realize is that the sport's international governing body, World Aquatics, also oversees water polo, diving, artistic swimming, open water swimming and high diving throughout the world. The international federation has been around for decades but recently underwent a dramatic rebranding from FINA to World Aquatics. One of the leaders of the federation is American Brent Nowicki, who has been executive director at World Aquatics since June 2021 after spending more than eight years at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. SportsTravel Managing Editor Matt Traub talked with Nowicki recently about the organization's rebranding, the international scene especially in a time of turmoil in the Ukraine, the importance of the U.S. market five years out from the Los Angeles Games and how growing up in Buffalo has shaped his work ethic as an international sports executive based in Switzerland.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There aren't many kids who have the opportunity to be exposed to the Olympic version of the sports of canoeing and kayaking, but Joe Jacobi was one of them. After being exposed to the sport in a summer camp near the Washington, D.C., area where he grew up, Jacobi found himself on the path to elite competition. Years later that led to international rankings for him and his partner Scott Stausbaugh in the two-man version of whitewater canoe slalom. By the time the 1992 Olympic Summer Games came around in Barcelona, they were poised to take a serious run at the podium. That effort, which culminated in the first U.S. gold medal ever in canoe slalom, came after years of intense preparation and training. After competing, Jacobi went on to administration at the then-governing body of the sport, USA Canoe/Kayak, which moved its headsquarters to Oklahoma City after that destination began a major investment in paddlesports. Now, he is back living near Barcelona as a a performance coach and author, who latest book is called "Slalom: 6 River Classes About How to Confront Obstacles, Advance Amid Uncertainty and Bring Focus to What Matters Most." In this conversation, SportsTravel Executive Editor and Publisher Jason Gewirtz talks with Jacobi about his path to the Olympic Games, the triumph he had in Barcelona and the lessons he learned from a career in a sport whose very nature lends itself to thinking differently when obstacles are thrown into our path.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

As a young boy, Simon Whitfield loved playing team sport. In particular, soccer and ice hockey, and through these pursuits, he was able to develop important skills that would go on to serve him well in the future. However, it was the sport of running that really captured his interest, inspiring him to think about what was possible in his life.He has nothing but fond memories when he reflects on his first time being introduced to triathlon, getting his start in the Sharbot Lake kid's triathlon which was an informal, family friendly community-based event. He fell in love with triathlon and in order to become the very best he could be, he said his good byes to his family and friends and left his home in Kingston, Ontario, to travel alone, as a 16-year old, more than halfway across the world, to Sydney, Australia to complete high school and to train amongst its top-ranked triathletes. This decision would ultimately pay off for Simon and help spur him on to Olympic greatness. You'll hear how in our discussion today. In this episode, Simon shares the role that visualization played in the process of winning his gold medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, as well how it always helped him to create and play out different scenarios in his head in order to always be ready for anything that happened in competition. Simon is a deep thinker, and in our discussion, he shares what he feels he has learned about himself, not only through success, but also through hardship and adversity. It's these life lessons that continue to propel him on in his own journey, inspiring him to find meaning and purpose in his life that extend far beyond his identify as a world class athlete and Olympian to something that means so much more to him; the ability to always remain open and curious about the world and to always connect with nature, be out on the ocean as a certified paddle board instructor and to give back to his sport and to the younger generation of athletes striving to follow in his footsteps. Simon's BioSimon Whitfield, triathlete (born 16 May 1975 in Kingston, ON). Simon Whitfield is a four-time Olympian and Canada's first-ever Olympic gold medalist in triathlon. Whitfield won gold at the 2000 Olympic Summer Games in Sydney, the first year that the triathlon was an Olympic event. Although he did not medal at the 2004 Games in Athens, he sprinted to a silver medal at the 2008 Games in Beijing. Whitfield was the Canadian flag-bearer at the 2012 Olympic Summer Games in London but crashed during the bicycle portion of the triathlon and was forced to pull out of the event. Whitfield has also amassed a total of 12 World Cup wins in addition to his gold and silver Olympic medals. In sports, sometimes it’s ideal for teams to peak at the right time. And USA Weightlifting would appear to be doing just that, especially when it comes to its elite athletes. The U.S. team is coming off its best showing in nearly 30 years at the IWF World Championships and its best showing in 20 years at the Pan Am Games. And the team appears poised to medal again in Tokyo after ending a 16-year drought at the 2016 Olympic Summer Games in Rio. Off the field of competition, things are headed in the right direction as well under the leadership of Phil Andrews, who has been CEO since 2016 and has been with the organization since 2013. A fundraising campaign ahead of Tokyo is on pace to raise $500,000 that will help pay for a unique training center for U.S. athletes at the Games. And several U.S. cities have been able to host international events thanks in part to USA Weightlifting’s concerted push to be more involved internationally. The sport of weightlifting has its challenges, including those outlined in a recent documentary that alleged new doping violations of overseas athletes and raised governance questions about the international federation. But Andrews is helping to lead the sport into a new era. In this conversation with SportsTravel Editor and Publisher Jason Gewirtz, Andrews discusses his entry into the Olympic movement, the NGB’s unique plans for Tokyo, why food costs need to be packaged into the NGB’s event room rates and what makes an ideal host venue for the organization.

Fukushima Radiation, What Prospects for Humanity

Global Research News Hour

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 14, 2017 59:09

Arnie Gundersen, a nuclear educator and former nuclear industry senior vice president, has referred to it as “the biggest industrial catastrophe in the history of mankind.” [1] Six years ago this week, a tsunami, triggered by a category 9.0 earthquake, slammed into the site of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear facility on the north east coast of the Japanese island of Honshu. The natural disaster resulted in the failure of systems keeping the reactor cores and spent fuel rods cool, leading to core meltdowns in three of the plant's reactors, as well as damage from consequent hydrogen explosions. [2] Enormous quantities of radioactive particles were released into the atmosphere and the water table leading to the Pacific Ocean. Approximately 170,000 people in the vicinity of the plant were immediately evacuated. The World Health Organization downplayed the health risks from the catastrophe, concluding in their 2013 Health Risk Assessment from the nuclear accident that the risks of contracting certain cancers in certain sex and age groups were only “somewhat elevated.” The report also concluded “no discernable increase in health risks from the Fukushima event is expected outside Japan.” [3] Nevertheless, a health management survey examining 38,000 children in Fukushima found three children diagnosed with thyroid cancer. The natural incidence is one in one million. [4] Further, a December 2011 peer-reviewed report in the International Journal of Health Sciences found that in the 14 weeks immediately following the event, there were 14,000 excess deaths in the United States connected with radio-active fall-out from the Fukushima meltdowns. [5] The Japanese government has been so successful in its efforts to assuage the concerns of the wider public that Prime Minister Abe was able to secure Tokyo as the site for the 2020 Olympic Summer Games! As of this month, the Abe government ends its housing subsidies to people evacuated from the area proximate to the nuclear facility, forcing those fearful of the lingering radiation to fend for themselves abroad. [6][7] The nuclear accident may have profound consequences for all humanity, and possibly all life on Earth, yet the severity of the situation doesn't seem to merit major headlines. On this, the sixth anniversary of the start of the Fukushima crisis, we spend the hour with world renowned nuclear watchdog, Dr. Helen Caldicott. In this interview, conducted and recorded on International Women's Day, Dr. Caldicott talks about the high radiation reading recently recorded at Unit 2, efforts to contain the radioactive water spilling out of the facility, projected health risks from the cesium, tritium, strontium and other isotopes spewing from the site and much, much more. Caldicott also extends the discussion to talk about Canada's role in nuclear proliferation and the threats posed by the new Trump Administration and Cold War atmosphere in which it is situated. Dr. Helen Caldicott is a physician and co-founder of Physicians for Social Responsibility. She is a nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize, the recipient of the 2003 Lannan Prize for Cultural Freedom, and author or editor of several books including Nuclear Madness: What You Can Do (1979), If You Love This Planet: A Plan to Heal The Earth (1992), The New Nuclear Danger: George W. Bush's Military-Industrial Complex(2001), and Crisis Without End -The Medical and Ecological Consequences of the Fukushima Nuclear Catastrophe (2014). She is currently the president of the Helen Caldicott Foundation (NuclearFreePlanet.org). Her latest book, Sleepwalking to Armaggedon: The Threat of Nuclear Annihilation will be available in bookstores in July, 2017.
