SUMMARYCuriosity. Care. Compassion. Connection. As we learn on this episode of Gratitude Through Hard Times with Host Chris Schembra, these words define Kapil Sharma's highly successful career as a leader known for bringing out the best in his teams. As Chief Transformation Officer at Microsoft India, he has brought home tools and lessons learned over 12 years living abroad in order to pay forward to others – particularly those who are fearful or marginalized. Throughout his career Kapil has seized opportunities and pushed himself hard, always with a sense of gratitude and commitment to giving back the gifts he has received. And for that deep well of both humanity and tenacity? Kapil gives a big tip of the hat to his mother, who lavished care and support on him from an early age. It was this foundation that enabled Kapil to take off, broaden his horizons and return to inspire others through his work transforming workplace cultures, tech stacks and customer relationships in Bengaluru (also known as Bangalore) and beyond. You'll learn about the Five Sage Powers for developing Positive Intelligence that have guided Kapil and the heightened acuity he attributes to both risk-taking and fear. He's also sharing professional and personal development resources that have influenced his management style as well as the ways in which his children's wonder and positivity are like a battery refresh when his energy runs low. Even with all today's unsettling challenges, Kapil finds tremendous promise in human, scientific and technological advances. Pandemic has been a great leveler, he says, inviting us to take stock, prioritize and most of all model gratitude and empathy: “If we can teach (our children) to be compassionate, caring, loving, I think there will be a great outcome that they will be able to create – if they remain connected as human beings.” It's a heartening outlook – one that we have it within us to make real!Kapil's engaging postings on a range of topics are available @LinkedIn. KEY TOPICS:Chris opens by asking: If you could give thanks to one person you don't credit enough, who would that be? Kapil gives a shout out to his mom, who supported her only son's decision to leave his hometown in India to explore – which became 15 years in London. She encouraged him in every way throughout that journey.Based in Bengaluru (also known as Bangalore) the past four years, Kapil sees his return as an opportunity to educate his children to Indian culture as well as to show his mom gratitude and respect for all her hard work as a parent.About Kapil's Sense of Service: As a young man he was driven to achieve and benefited from the generosity of wise elders and mentors. He sees his role today as one of providing the same to young people coming up behind him in India.Taking Risk: In order to live to his fullest potential, Kapil regularly sets challenges for himself – especially those that stretch him in ways that might be of service to others (like the decision to move his family back to India). Why Kapil is very tuned into inspiring hope in younger people – especially those who are unsure, overwhelmed or marginalized.Changing Questions, Changing Life: Kapil shares brave questions that have shaped his trajectory, which include:Turning Fear and Danger to Advantage: Kapil sees in today's unsettled crypto, stock and real estate markets an opportunity to hustle. And therein are gifts:How Covid19 has proved a great leveler, forcing all of us to ask:Kapil rejects the idea that we can't change the system. We can spur small changes in one person's world that chip away at larger systemic issues.Reframing hustling as staying positive, active and growth-oriented.About Shirzad Chamine's Five Sage Powers for developing Positive Intelligence – or hustle with humility:A recap of what has factored into Kapil's vision:Cogs in a Wheel: How Kapil evolved his management style and emphasis on providing smart people with understanding, validation, empathy and space to be vulnerable.Three Things that Kapil Requires:Democratized Leadership: Kapil enables his teams to do what they do best by inspiring high levels of commitment and accountability. It's a recipe that generates camaraderie and positive, self-reinforcing results. The Demands of Caring: Empathetic leadership can be grinding at times, but Kapil's two kids recharge his batteries. Their positive energy and wonder are therapeutic.Kapil shares an anecdote about a team member who was falling short of expectation and tried to take himself out of the position. Because of his skills and EQ, along with the right encouragement, he went on to flourish. Hire the right people and they will eventually succeed!Transgenerational Learning: Kapil is most excited to see his children inherit from his mother (and father) a living, daily example of caring and compassion. And honesty! Where they fall short, his parents will call them out!The Power of Human Connection: Kapil's wish for future generations, who will have tremendous technological and scientific advantages, is that they are intentional about maintaining connections to one another – not just machines. In closing, this conversation illuminated for Kapil a sense of gratitude for the opportunities he's had thus far – and excitement about what lies ahead as an aspirational son, husband, father, mentor and community leader.  QUOTABLE“Sometimes gratitude is untold. It's the way you do things for someone without saying and maybe that's what's happening. In my own way, I think I am thanking (my mother) … but sometimes it's also about being intentional in saying thank you.”“I believe there's so much more potential I can achieve as a human being … It is about making an impact on people's lives. It's about giving back to people in terms of knowledge. It's about giving back to young people.” (Kapil)“It's not about becoming immune to the dangers that exist around us, but how do we learn to find opportunity in the hard times? It's a question not only for a business landscape, but a human landscape.” (Chris) “Hustling is part of life. You need to be continually hustling … It keeps you sharp. It makes you look four steps ahead. It gives you options.” (Kapil)“(Teams) are looking to me to care and to be okay with their vulnerability and be vulnerable at the same time with them. To be a highly emotional leader, you need (these qualities) to be successful long-term.” (Kapil)“I've had many difficult conversations in my career and I always went into those with the view that I have the best for you in my mind and this is the right thing.” (Kapil)“If you're not looking at your peers' outcomes and what's stopping then from becoming successful, then you're not really operating as one tribe.” (Kapil)“To get vulnerability and trust and safety and care (from a leader) is the best thing you can do as a human being, let alone a leader in the corporate world.” (Chris)“If you hire the right people with the right EQ, they eventually come out on the right side. It takes some time, but if you create the right environment for them they will be successful.” (Kapil)“Eight out of 10 top performers have high EQ. It's the EQ that determines earning potential as well as Positive Intelligence … and the good news is that they can be developed over time.” (Chris)“If we can teach (our children) to be compassionate, caring, loving, I think there will be a great outcome that they will be able to create – if they remain connected as human beings.” (Kapil) LINKS/FURTHER RESOURCES:Click here to listen to Chris's conversation about "The Quest for Passion" with Tony Safoian.Further Reading: "Change Your Questions, Change Your Life: 10 Powerful Tools for Work and Life," by Marilee G. During this episode we got to take a look under the hood of Pompano Beach Brewing Co. We got to see what makes them tick and learned why they decided to embark on a rebrand of their entire brewery. Before we get started, let's really dive into what a rebrand exactly is. A rebrand is the process of changing your image. It's a marketing strategy of giving a new name, symbol, or change in design for an already-established brand. The idea behind rebranding is to create a different identity from your competitors in the market. Sometimes the necessity for a rebrand is obvious and can begin to feel very pressing. Other times, it can be more subtle. While there's no set-in-stone checklist for knowing when you need to rebrand, we do see a recurring set of criteria leading up to breweries pulling the trigger. During this episode we explored: ✪ Learning a bit more about Adam Feingold the co-founder of Pompano Beach Brewing formerly known as Bangin' Banjo Brewing ✪ What led Adam and the other co-founders in the creation of Bangin' Banjos? ✪ Where the name Bangin' Banjos came from? ✪ How Covid19 aided in the decision to pivot their business model. ✪ The thought process that went into the rebrand here at Pompano Beach Brewing Co. ✪ The rebranding phases of Pompano Beach Brewing Co.

We catch up with one of our favourite technical, product-centric founders, Rafi Putra Arriyan (or Ari), CEO and co-founder of interbank transfer platform Flip. With Ari's product-focus and technical expertise they have since grown the platform to serve 1.7 million Indonesians today. He calls from West Java's Depok City and we talk about, among other things: the classic story of how he and his college friends built an MVP with a Google Form and found PMF in three weeks; Flip's approach to product development as the company aims to go from interbank transfer app to digital bank for Indonesia; his advice for fellow technical founders. Timeline 00:17 Yinglan introduces Ari; 1:20 How Ari met Insignia; 2:15 Why Ari and his college friends started Flip; 4:04 How Ari and his college friends found PMF with a Google Form MVP; 5:32 How Flip has evolved with Indonesia's financial services sector over the past five years; 6:53 How COVID19 has affected activity and operations on Flip; 9:20 How Flip operates with a digitalising banking sector; 9:56 Flip's approach to product development; 10:54 Ari's thoughts on cross-border financial services and transfers; 12:17 One of Flip's more recent experiments: Flip Instant; 13:38 Ari's take on upcoming use cases in fintech; 15:06 Ari's advice for technical founders; About the guest Ari started Flip after he and his co-founders spotted an inefficiency in the interbank fund transfers segment in Indonesia. With his product-centric focus and technical background, he has grown Flip to be a platform serving 1.7 million Indonesians today. He believes in using technology to automate manual banking processes and reduce the administrative costs of wire transfer. Get out your notebook because smart advice comes fast and furious on this episode of The Girl CEO Podcast. Host Ronne Brown welcomes beauty influencer and educator Kay Lynn, who is sharing her journey from being a single mom with “zero clients, zero dollars” to leading a seven-figure luxury hair extension business that is changing lives. Her #1 online teaching platform @KerriAlstonHair offers not only education and mastery but also a community for entrepreneurial women looking to grow their beauty ventures. Has getting to this point been easy? Of course not. But as these two dynamic women remind us, it's a process! You'll come away with important advice related to relationships (self-love comes first!), building out a business (don't rush it!), setting expectations and creating a network of support to get you through the inevitable bumps and bruises. There's no use being “thirsty for a relationship or companionship when really we just have to learn to be content with ourselves,” says Kay, whose meaningful (profitable!) life is grounded in a hard-won sense of self-worth that she has also modelled for her kids. Are you ready to let old assumptions go and clear the way for something better? This episode is full of actionable strategies to change your mindset, grow your brand and watch your new vision take flight! If you want to learn more about Kay and her #1 training platform for luxury hair extensions, then visit this link. https://kerri-alston.teachable.com/?affcode=641107_phtevkli  Is it time to build brand clarity, develop a social strategy or create new revenue streams for your business? Because she pushed herself to get licensed as a cosmetology instructor, Kay was qualified and ready to go when online teaching caught fire during Covid.(04:30) Getting into the Beautiful Backstory:• Kay started doing hair about 13 years ago and bounced around in various jobs.• As a single mom of two, an independent, sustainable source of income was key.• From “zero clients, zero dollars,” Kay was all about self-empowerment.• Wanting the “fairy tale” sparked an eye-opening relationship that left her vulnerable.(07:30) Tip #2: Check your thirst! When it comes to launching relationships, look for those red flags and always keep self-love at the forefront and your whole “self” intact.(10:15) Ronne and Kay dig into mythmaking and the way we are raised, starting as little girls, to feel incomplete unless and until the fairy tale prince shows up.(11:10) Tip #3: Keep your head straight and surround yourself with people who are likeminded. You can check all the boxes, but learning to love yourself (and be okay on your own) attracts everything else you want in life – especially a solid and loving partner!(13:14) Can you really be happy single? Yes. Kay has experienced it! Far from thirsty, she was turning people down. And by focusing on her whole self, she was preparing for her right person.(14:05) Tip #4: Your partner isn't going to be your everything and not every day is going to be great, so dig in and understand: Relationships are hard. Life is hard. And it's okay!(15:00) How Covid19 gave Kay the invaluable break that she needed to get quiet, hear from God and regroup to change her business “completely for the better.”(15:35) All About Kerri Alston Hair:• #1 online training platform for luxury hair extensions.• Luxury extension training certifications.• Access to KA Beauty Pro Wholesale Buyer's Club Membership.(17:00) About Kay's mission to help other stylists tap into the billion-dollar beauty industry and reach beyond self-limiting beliefs about “only” being a service provider!(18:30) Notes from the owner of a seven-figure business. What's important to know:• Broaden your mindset and look for big ideas.• Know that you can build and own something that goes beyond service.• Pursue what you love!(19:35) How to Establish Multiple Income Streams:• Locate different ways to monetize your existing business.• Think BIG and think ahead – 10 years down the line• Make a mental transition to lock in and focus on big-picture goals.(20:37) Drying the Tears: Shedding dysfunctional relationships can be hard but it also opens us up – if we're willing – to fresh energy and big possibility.(22:30) Tip #5: Starting over offers us a chance to humble ourselves and dig into uncomfortable places, which is where growth occurs.(23:00) Broke, working a $10 an hour job and living at her mom's house, Kay wasn't giving up on her kids or herself. She got up each day, got dressed and started talking to people, looking for opportunities to rebuild and be the entrepreneur she knew she could be.(26:00) Tip #6: Don't let Instagram fool you. Being an entrepreneur is hard work. It's a journey, and a grind and no one else's responsibility. If you're giving up stability, be prepared!(27:42) How Kay made her luck change: While working at Ulta (far from her ideal job) Kay lobbied to introduce luxury hair extensions, then recruited customers by introducing herself, networking and cultivating what would become the start of her clientele.(29:15) Tip #7: Working relationships are so important. It's not about making a quick dollar. Your success is built on loyalty and attention to client needs – regardless of business sector.(30:15) Content is Currency: Kay documented her brand and service, creating social media posts that captured the personalized, luxury in-home concierge experience she could provide.(33:00) Tip #8: Remember that there are people out there who genuinely want to help you promote your talent or skill. Reach out to mentors. Build that network!(34:21) Tip #9: Do not put pressure on your friends and family. Lower expectation and let them organically come around after they see what it is that you've been doing!(38:20) Tip #10: Stay Nimble and be patient! Businesses require flexibility and time in order to grow without overextending. What not to do:• Get locked into big overhead.• Take on a bunch of debt.• Get stuck in a box when you're actually in a position to negotiate.(39:00) Kay walks us through how she grew her business incrementally from a mobile service in women's homes to a by-the-day booth to a permanent salon home and online platform.(42:00) Starting Over: It's what Kay regularly does – and what all of us have to do if we want to move towards a better vision.  QUOTABLE: • “It was fairly new when I started doing luxury extensions. It was kind of a hidden thing. I saw some white space and jumped in!” (Kay) • “It's crazy how we play small with ourselves versus saying, ‘I'm going to work for myself and have my own brand.' ” (Ronne) • “The beauty industry is the most lucrative industry. There is so much money!” (Ronne) • “As women we want to be successful but, as I always say, success is a very small portion of your happiness.” (Ronne) • “I never regret any of my experiences because I always come out on top by learning something.” (Kay) • “When you're looking for somebody, you're going to be so … thirsty for a relationship or companionship when really we just have to learn to be content with ourselves. And just be patient, because you don't want someone that's not for you.” (Kay) • “When I saw that next level of success I wanted to tell more people about it so they could also be successful.” (Kay) • “Once I got out of the (bad) relationship, it's like my mind just opened up!” (Kay) • “If you're going to be successful you have to promote yourself!” (Ronne) • “It doesn't matter what type of business you're in, if you develop (a strong) relationship with your clients … Those little acts of kindness go a very long way.” (Ronne) • “Content is currency. Without content, it's like, is it really happening? If you're not capturing the moment it's like it didn't happen.” (Kay) • “Give (your business) all that you have and then I promise it gets easier because it starts to work on your behalf.” (Kay) • “Allow your business to push you into the next level … Allow it to grow and push you into that space where you've got enough income coming in that it's time to transition out.” (Ronne) • “Sometimes you just have to wait until it's your time … Sometimes it's your time to not expect recognition, edification, applause. Just do the work and eventually it will be your time.” (Ronne)   If you enjoyed this episode text us your favorite quotable 202-410-2903About Ronne:A brand expert, podcast host and TedX speaker, Ronne went from being a single mom mopping floors as a janitor to becoming a successful business owner and influencer.
