Today's guest is a superhero in my eyes. Kathryn Burmeister is an author, speaker, coach, and attorney. Most of all, she is a defender of the innocent. On top of being a “great defender,” Kathryn is passionate about so many areas of life. She's done so much for animals' rights, she's been a voice for the voiceless, and she is also an avid rock climber. In this episode, Kathryn and I discuss some of the topics from her book, Overcoming Addiction to the Status Quo.  Through her personal experiences of losing her partner to suicide, dealing with depression and anxiety, and deciding to leave her harmful work environment, Kathryn learned how to step out on her own and find true fulfillment in life.  Today she is sharing about this journey with us. She is also teaching us how we can find healing and purpose as well by overcoming our addiction to the status quo.  Tune in to get started living the life you've always dreamed of. In this episode, you will hear: Kathryn's history with the legal industry. Why she is so passionate about helping people create the life they want. What the “addiction to the status quo” is. How Kathryn found purpose in her life. Why what we think of as success never satisfies. Why we get addicted to things. How to overcome your addiction to the status quo. The importance of investing in your personal life. Subscribe and Review Please share this podcast with your friends and family. Our beliefs really do drive our behavior and you are born for more. And the other half of it is just your mindset. Like in my mind, I'm the greatest at what I do and nobody can tell me differently." - Kathryn Dew   "A leap of faith in yourself is important. Today’s show is a special episode with difficult and sensitive topics. We’ll be hearing about Nora and her story of postpartum psychosis and filicide. We have the honor of hearing from Nora’s mother, Kathryn Gahl. She will share from her perspective as a mother and what it’s been like to see what Nora has been through and continues to experience in her imprisonment after filicide. We’ll also hear from Dr. Brooke Laufer, a clinical psychologist who picked up on this case and has followed it closely. Nora has given her permission for us to have this conversation with Brooke and Kathryn about her case. The goal is to get information out in the public about postpartum psychosis, its detection, and treatment. Join us to hear the mother’s perspective, the clinical perspective, and what’s going on in Nora’s life right now. Nora’s mother, Kathryn Gahl, became a widely-published, multi-genre writer after a long career as a nurse manager. She is the mother of a daughter and a son, and in 2004, she lost her young grandson to filicide. Now, her bookshelves sag with letters from her imprisoned daughter, who is also a registered nurse. Kathryn believes in the transformative power of dance, dark chocolate, and red lipstick to help her get through life. Brooke Laufer has been a practicing psychologist since 2005. She began her clinical work in psychiatric wards with severely mentally ill patients and then worked in schools with adolescents and their families. She is currently in private practice doing psychoanalytic psychotherapy. After having her first child, Brooke had a disturbing postpartum OCD experience, which inspired her to begin researching, understanding, and specializing in the area of perinatal mental illness. She recently started working as an expert witness for women who have committed a crime in a postpartum episode. Brooke has two children of her own, along with a Golden Retriever and a loyal husband; they live, work, and play in Evanston, Illinois. Show Highlights: The overview of Nora’s story, from Kathryn Nora’s experience: suffocating her 14-month-old son, Leo, and then attempting suicide because of her postpartum psychosis Circumstances that contributed to Leo’s death Nora’s psychiatric diagnoses: major depressive disorder severe with paranoid ideation, excessive-compulsive personality disorder, and PTSD What these events were like for Kathryn How Kathryn’s writing and dancing have helped her cope with these horrifying events How Kathryn was surprised at the people evaporated from her life and those who stepped up to support and help her How Brooke got involved through corresponding with Nora because of a childhood connection Why Nora believed she deserved to suffer and be punished Altruistic filicide (defined as believing that bringing death to the child is better than if the child survives) is an apt label for Nora What it’s like to be in a state like Wisconsin, where a case like this gets very little support and legal consideration Why Nora made the decision to plead guilty The main issue is how poorly we treat mental health issues in our US legal system that is deeply flawed How other countries deal with mental health, motherhood, and postpartum psychosis How Kathryn dealt with this experience with only one bout of depression Why postpartum psychosis is an issue that shows the failure of our culture A message from Brooke: “We need to understand that motherhood is equally dark and light. We need to ask for good help when we need it.” Why family members need to speak up when a mom seems “off” A message from Kathryn: “Trust your hunch.” The dire need for more postpartum screening Resources: Dr. Brooke Laufer Kathryn Gahl Gahlstone Twitter: @kathryngahl

Kathryn Bertine is an author, athlete, activist and documentary filmmaker. During her pro career in cycling, she was a three-time Caribbean Champion, six-time national champion of St. Kitts and Nevis (SKN) and raced five years on pro circuit  with four UCI domestic and World Tour teams Colavita, Wiggle-Honda, BMW and Cylance Pro Cycling. Now retired from professional racing, Bertine serves as Trek’s Ambassador for Equality in Cycling. Off the bike, she is a filmmaker, activist, journalist and author of three nonfiction books, All the Sundays Yet to Come, As Good As Gold, and The Road Less Taken. From 2006 through 2012, Bertine was a columnist, author and senior editor for ESPN. When she pitched a documentary film on women’s pro cycling to ESPN in 2012, they rejected the proposal. So Bertine decided she would make it herself. After a two-year labor of love and crowdsourcing adventures, in 2014, HALF THE ROAD: The passion, pitfalls and power of women’s professional cycling was released. It won five film festivals, debuted in 16 nations, scored international distribution and successfully brought the hammer down on the corruption and sexism in sports. Half the Road is now available on iTunes, Vimeo, Amazon Prime and DVD. Five years later, she continues to receive royalties on a film ESPN said no one would watch.  As an advocate for equality in women’s sports, Bertine then started the social activism movement Le Tour Entier in an effort to bring parity to women’s professional road cycling, starting with the Tour de France. She and her team succeeded, and women’s field was included in 2014 with the addition of La Course by Tour de France. In 2017, she founded and serves as CEO for Homestretch Foundation, which provides free housing to female professional athletes struggling with the gender pay gap. Bertine was featured on the cover of Bicycling Magazine and profiled in Outside Magazine for her platforms of implementing change in the world.  As an activist, Bertine continues to serve as a public speaker/lecturer on equality and advocacy. She shares her journey and her message—that through passion, disruption, opportunity and focus, anything is possible and we’re all capable of effecting change—with corporations, universities and other professional outlets. [03:00] When we talk about living a zero waste lifestyle, what exactly does that mean? [03:03] The simple definition is to send nothing to landfill, but the more complex definition, the one that I really like is to completely wright waste out of existence. [15:41] What has been one of your most important decisions that you have made around mama earth? I feel like every decision that we make is very important and I think that some of the traps that people fall into are feeling like one person and that the small things don’t make a difference but really the small things, when they are done over a really really long period of time, are some of the most impactful things that you can do. I always say, embrace your inner three-year-old.  4.What is one sustainability fact that you like to use in a room with people not yet on a sustainability journey?  [20:15] The water footprint for all the items we use is just crazy. It takes 3 litres of water to make one litre of bottled water. It takes 37 gallons of water to make a roll of toilet paper. It takes 8 gallons of water to make a paper plate  5.Where can people find you?   (https://www.facebook.com/goingzerowaste/) (https://www.instagram.com/going.zero.waste/) (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCM_g2f3EWOV-OEhG7cG_Lew) (https://www.goingzerowaste.com/) (https://twitter.com/goingzerowaste) Key Take Away“ Really start to ask yourself questions. I always say, embrace your inner three-year-old. “ Question everything! Find out where your clothing is made, what is the process, where is the fabric from, who is the farmer that grows your food? It is only when we start questioning items in our life that we realise that not everything presented as good is always good and that you need to be able to make those conclusions for yourself based on real facts rather than marketing campaigns influencing our decisions without doing our research to confirm.

How can we be better communicators so that our important messages actually move people and resonate with our audiences to inspire action? How can we go beyond reducing single-use plastics in our own lives to affecting greater change in actual waste infrastructures for system change? Kathryn Kellogg, creator of GoingZeroWaste.com, actor, and spokesperson for National Geographic's Planet or Plastic Campaign shares her wisdom with you.   HIGHLIGHTS:   [3:34] Kaméa: "Why are endocrine disruptors and toxic chemicals everywhere in our day-to-day lives, like in normal cleaning products?"  [5:40] Kathryn: "You didn't have to be perfect to make a difference. [6:50] Kaméa: "What's something from your experience acting that supports your work in building up the zero waste community?"  [7:56] Kathryn's advice for getting our stories to resonate with our audiences. [9:05] One of Kathryn's favorite (and weirdest!) eco-friendly simple swaps. [12:30] Kathryn: "When facing rejection, you have to learn how to not take it personally." [13:08] How Kathryn ended up working with National Geographic. [13:49] Kathryn: "Showing up is 90% of the battle." [15:37] Kathryn: "Not everyone has the same amount of access and we have to know that we are all working for a better future."  [16:31] Kaméa: "What do you think are the roots of moral superiority within sustainability?"
